"War is always a betrayal of the young by the old, of

soldiers by politicians, of idealists by cynics."

~ Chris Hedges (The Oregonian)

Our nation has been fighting a battle of power. Power to have control over a cause that has not been fully explained. This cause is tearing nations apart and questions keep flashing in our heads. What is this cause? Why are we at war with a nation halfway around the world? Why isnt other nations supporting us, the most powerful country in the world? Should I be scared? We are a nation of power and prestige, why should I be scared? However, a tragic and devastating event occurred on September 11, 001. Our nation endured and lived through the deaths of thousands of people. Now, we the people of the United States are angry. Angry and scared that we are going to lose all of the power, prestige, freedom, and happiness that we created and live with. Slowly, the cycle of war begins. The focuses of our nation are stressed on the struggles and hardships that have been tolerated. The faults of our 'enemy nations are now pointed out and we are destroying them. Write my Essay on War

Chris Hedges and his book War Is a Far That Brings Us Meaning have brought new theories and explanations to many issues that have been recently been introduced. One theory in particular that has kept my interest has been on the subject of how a state destroys their culture and then attempts to bring down their enemy. What does this mean? First, a state will silence their own culture, and then the "enemy is dehumanized" and finally, everything is targeted toward "promoting and glorifying the myth, the nation, the cause" (Hedges 6). We have seen this constantly in the exact form and pattern. Since September 11th, the United States has forced their people to become an army against Iraq, Afghanistan, and their partners in 'terrorism. The suicide bombers, rulings done by Saddam Hussein and the deaths of thousands under his rule, and corrupt leaders have been pushed into our minds to force us to sympathize with the weak and unfortunate. It forces us to want to change the bad and take control of the situation. As this is occurring, the enemy is seen as immoral, selfish killers, only looking out for themselves. We seen their state and want them to pay for their wrong doings. We forget that they are humans as well. Finally, patriotism is the new target. "United We Stand", "God Bless America", "We the People", and "We Will Never Forget" are just a few to name the many. People are brought together by tragedy and hard times. In the United States case, the September 11th attacks were a reason to bring everyone together. National symbols now became something that is seen everyday. People were proud to be American. Glued to their televisions at night, watching a concert dedicated to New York where U, Faith Hill, Dave Matthews, and many others sang for the nation. Watching how President George W. Bush would speak to the country every night proclaiming our unity. Our nation because focused on the stars and stripes, not the deaths and torture.

Chris Hedges also explained how ones state is thrown into a "trance". A message is pushed how that the cause is just, the state is right, and everything that the states leaders are doing is good (Hedges 64). In the United States case, people are addicted to what they believe is a just cause. But in reality, "we feel guilty". We are "knocked off balance" in our perfect world (Hedges 74). We dont know what to expect and we become frightened of the reality of what is really happening. The killings make our nation angry and force them to stay glued to their televisions, wanting to see update after update. This is one of the most covered wars our nation has ever witnessed. People can see firsthand what is going on over in Iraq. However, we are only seeing what we want to see. This forces a different understanding of our culture and history. The past is "recreated to fit the myth" (Hedges 80). The myth in the case of the recent war with Iraq is the fact that we, the people of the United States of America, are doing a good deed in trying to recreate a government for Iraq.

Peace becomes "possible only when (the) culture no longer serves a cause or a myth but the most precious elusive of all human narratives truth" (Hedges 8). Will we ever know the truth?

In 18,Alexander Fleming was straightening up a pile of Petri dishes where he had been growing bacteria, but which had been piled in the sink. He opened each one and examined it before tossing it into the cleaning solution. One made him stop and say, Thats funny.

Some mould was growing on one of the dishes... not too unusual, but all around the mould, the staph bacteria had been killed... very unusual. He took a sample of the mould. He found that it was from the penicillium family, later known as Penicillium notatum. Fleming presented his findings in 1, but they raised little interest. He published a report on penicillin and its potential uses in the British Journal of Experimental Pathology.

Fleming worked with the mould for some time, but refining and growing it was a difficult process better suited to a chemist. The work was taken over by a team of chemists and mould specialists, but was cut short when several of them died or relocated. Fleming found that this mould could kill the germs of a number of diseases and called it Penicillin. People then later on read about Flemings work, Edward Florey then got his team of scientists together to work on penicillin, one of these scientists was Ernst Chain, he then started to work on the idea of penicillin in 18. Two years later Floreys team of scientists had solved all of the problems dealing with penicillin, they could now make pure penicillin for the public to use. But before they could let the public try the penicillin they used eight mice to experiment on, they gave the eight mice the germs and then penicillin to four of them, the penicillin seemed to cure the mice that it had been given to but the mice that were not given penicillin died unfortunately. To make sure that it was the penicillin that cured the mice they had to run a few more experiments. One of these experiments was used on a police man that was sick, four days after the penicillin had been taken the police man was as chirpy as a bird, but then the next day he had fallen ill again due to the fact that the scientists didnt have enough penicillin. So they decided to go to the drug industry so that the drug companies could help with their findings. The government decided to help with the discovery of penicillin and gave Floreys team a grant to help develop penicillin and make bigger quantities of the new cure. Florey then flew to Russia to spread of his new ideas

The Things They Carried Write my Essay on The Things they Carried

In Tim O Briens, "The Things They Carried" we find ourselves in the place of soldiers whose emotions are heavier than anything that they carry. Emotions to these soldiers are heavy because of the price of war that each deals with day in and day out. The only thing that they cling on to everyday is survival and the will to carry on in the day to day combat, which awaited them. They find that emotions are hard to overcome especially when there is nothing to fight for.

During war ever soldier has his weapon, and their special something that keeps him sane and able to carry on with hope. Not only that but they had to carry their emotions, in a way. For example Kiowa, one of the men that are under Jimmy Crosss command, "Took along his new testament and a pair of moccasins" (pg. ). These items that the soldiers carried kept them from giving into fatal emotions, which plague a mind during war. They had the weight of these emotions, and the burdens that the land gave to them. In essence each man carried much more than that, "they carried the land itself-Vietnam, the place, the soil. They carried the sky. The whole atmosphere" (pg. 15). Every man had to hold up the demands of the war even the land. Emotions were more than just in their head it was all around them, every second. Each emotion was the same challenge it was just a different face.

Every mans emotions weighed greatly on how the soldiers were able to do battle. In Jimmy Crosss case it is Martha, "On occasion he would yell at his men to spread out the column, to keep their eyes open, but then he would slip away into daydreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the jersey shore, with Martha, carrying nothing" (Pg. ). Jimmy Cross was unable to stay in control of himself in battle. In this situation things become desperate and when there is no order death occurs, like Ted Lavender, who was shot in the head, "right then Ted Lavender was shot in the head on his way back from peeing" (pg. 1). This could have been prevented if Ted Lavender was thinking. Jimmy Cross also feels the strain of guilt for this cause he feels that this was his fault for not watching out for his men, not only that he is responsible for each one of his mans lives, This also adds to every man, as fear sets in. This tragedy could have been avoided if Jimmy Cross was paying better attention to all of his soldiers and his thoughts.

What specifically were these soldiers feelings about the war, " Henry Dobbins asked what moral was. Moral? You know. Moral. Its like with that old TV show- Paladin. Have gun will travel. Henry Dobbins thought about it. Yeah, well, he finally said. I dont see any moral. There it is, man." (pg. 14). Henry Dobbins tells us how the soldiers feel about the war; they have no moral, which means that they dont want to be in the war. " They searched the villages with out knowing what to look for, not caring" (pg. 15). This also tells how the soldiers feel about the war. They really had no care for anything at all. They marched for the sake of marching, none of them had a purpose they just did what they were told. None of these men were there for their lives they were there because they were told they had to, none of the soldiers had a will to fight only a will to march.

In the end each man had emotions and either an ability to control them or lose to them. When they lost they could not center thoughts on the reality of war, all they could think about was the things they missed. Mans true strength and being is tried when they step on the battlefield where emotion is created in the soldier. Some can take what war dishes them and simply others are not cut out to be trained killers, but if a man can overcome his emotions then war can be suited to anyone, at least mentally. War is a calibration of both glory and death, these factors can lead to a certain emotion of a soldier, death can cause pain, glory can give way to an ego, emotions can affect how a soldier is able to cope or how a soldier is able to be successful in the battlefield. In the end the soldier is the beholder to their future they either die or survive.
