Organizational behavior

Organizational behavior has many different definitions, but there are some key things that are consistent in most definitions. In general the definition would include employees, the organization, and the behavior that the employees have within that organization. The definition may also include some specifics on the study of those employees, the organizational structure and their different behavior types.

Organizational behavior to me, after doing some reading on the subject, is made up of many different aspects that all tie together to make a very thorough definition. First, organizational behavior is made up of employees. Employees have different values, skill-sets, motivators, personal histories and attitudes before they come into an organization. All of these differences are brought into the organization by every single employee, which accumulates to a large variety of values and backgrounds. Second, the organization itself has its own value system, structure and goals. Organizational behavior is the study of how both the employee and organization interact with each other to make up their own set of values and goals.

As stated by Stephen P. Robbins (001), the study of these organizational behaviors are done "for the purpose of applying such knowledge toward improving an organizations effectiveness" (p. ). Knowing how to best combine the values of the employee and organization requires study on the concepts of OB as well as research within that specific organization. Custom Essays on Organizational Behavior

Although the studies of organizational behavior have been around for many years, the definition and theories continue to evolve as people and organizations evolve. The base make-up of employee and organization values are the starting point, but determining the appropriate organizational structure and the best way to keep employees satisfied, motivated and effective are more complicated. As our society continues to evolve organizations must also evolve. If organizations expect to be successful in todays fast-paced market they need to keep in tune with their organizational behavior and continue to look for ways to improve. In doing so, they will be better suited to meet employees needs, and to align the organization more effectively.

There was blood streaming down the puddles on the dirt street. Civilians running in every

direction while shrieking loudly. I couldnt believe what my eyes were seeing. My own

sister, lying on the ground right in front of me. All I could think to do was grab her lifeless

body in my arms, and get away as quickly as I could. Debree was flying all over the place. Order Custom Essay on YO YO YOOOoo

We always feared a bomb, but I never knew that it would actually happen. When I was

running for shelter the steps felt like miles. I never thought that it would come to this. I

never thought nightmares would be replacing my dreams. I never thought my nightmares

would come true. I am so scared. I cant get the pictures out of my mind.

Until we meet again

March , 00

0 AM-

Its been nearly months since I last wrote, and today me and my family are moving to the

United States, where we will be safe. We wont have to live in fear anymore. Its going to

be hard with out Myriam, though. She lost her life that day. That moment when she took

her last breath will remain in my mind forever. Surely, we can escape the danger here in

Saudi Arabia, but that tragic day will never escape my thoughts. I am sure that it will to

haunt me forever.

I hope to find a better life in America. My family and I will be departing at one oclock

this afternoon. The anticipation is killing me. I have never been on a plane in my life, in

ways I am quite scared but I am also very excited.

I am going to miss my friends very dearly. But if leaving Saudi Arabia is the key to a new ,

good life, then I will have to accept the hardships that come along with it. I hope that my

friends will soon leave this scary place, and reunite with me in America.

Until we meet again

-Abdesal

100 noon-

We are getting ready to leave. I am scared to start a new life. I know it is for the best

though.

Later......

The plane ride was very long. It took us about 16 hours in the air to finally reach America.

We are finally here, in the state of New Hampshire. Its not how I expected it to be, from

all of the movies I watched. There are no large skyscrapers, and there is hardly anyone

around. No one is walking around on the streets. I hardly see anyone. Father says it is

because we are not in a large busy state like New York, I wish I was there. I am so tired.

We havent slept for about 4 hours, but we need to get situated in our new home. I can

already tell that life is going to be so different here in America. I already feel so much

safer. I cant hear people screaming. I dont look out my window and see dead people

anymore. Such a secure feeling.

March , 00

After getting sleep I feel much better. Plus, the fact that I didnt have to fear a bomb in the

middle of the night, made me sleep much soundly. It is our second day here and I am

already loving it. I miss my friends so much though, and the thought of them back there

living a hard life makes me feel so guilty, because I now have it easy here in America.

Today I start my first day of school. I hope to fit in.

700 PM

Could it be that America is just as worse as my home country? I did not think I would be

asking myself this question, and only on my second day in this country. Today, in my first

day of school I truly realized how cruel people can be. As I walked up the steps to my new

school, I knew something was different. The stares that the Americans gave me were

appalling. It didnt stop at the staring. Thats just the beginning. I was harassed all day,

just because I am Arab. Why is it that people can not look through your appearance, and

see the real you underneath everything else? I am starting to wonder, if this life in America

is all that different than it was back home.

March 4, 00

My second day of school was not as bad as yesterday, thankfully I met some fellow Arabs

that were willing to help me and my family settle and get used to the American customs. It

is so different being in America, everything is done so much differently.

But I guess I will just have to face these hardships. I have always been tested

physically, but never mentally. I never thought it would be harder mentally on me here.

But I can deal with it. That is what I plan to do

Until next time

Many may wonder what the true definition of the American Dream is. Personally, the American Dream is a something that people desire to achieve in America because it is considered a land opportunity. It is all about making a change. This change refers to socio-economic position in the society. It is important to note that it is fair. The amount of diligent work one puts in always equals the outcome that is appropriate outcome. The amount of hard work, which can also considered as an input, is the exact amount you get as an output or a reward. This reward can be anything from upward-mobility to higher social status or greater financial freedom. These concepts are well illustrated in the work of Eric Lius "Notes of a Native Speaker" and Mike Roses "I Just Wanna Be Average". Lius work is well fit in the areas of ethnic identity and multiculturalism and Roses work discusses institutional forces that hinders upward movement in socio-economic system that convey class oppressions. Combining theses definitive concepts, it is going to be easier to make lucid that the American dream is surmounting the difference in socio-economic system, overcoming the institutionally oppressive forces and reinventing the ethnic identity in the multicultural society. It is recognizing and assessing oneself and making a difference. All common final output of the American Dream is that you fit into the society and you are in the social status where one desires to be. Thus reinvention of new ethnic identity, and living it up with the cultural pluralism is the key to the success in the society. This is the only way that you can open the door of American dream.

First of all, it is important to note Eric Lius conditions and his reinvention of the ethic identities.

But precisely because the times have changed, that aspiration and the imputation of the aspiration now seems astonishingly outmoded. The meaning of 'American has undergone a revolution in the twenty-nine years I have been alive, a revolution of color, class, and culture. Yet the vocabulary of "assimilation" has remained fixed all this time fixed in whiteness, which is still our metonym for power; and fixed in shame, which is what the colored are expected to fell for embracing the power.

His notion of assimilation is crucial in understanding the reinvention of new identity. One has to assimilate oneself first in order to reinvent a new ethnic identity that fits his new "revolution of color, class and culture". Liu means by revolution that his old ways of perception had changed to something new and extreme. He thought that white represented the power in his mind and he transformed himself into white internally so that he also can share this power. Thus his "amputation" meant his letting go of old Asian American, Chinese immigrant weakness and his reinvention of new ethnic identity is key to his American Dream. Liu is able to do this because he was able to understand what assimilation is. He was able to take in something that he did not have and he modified it to fit it to himself. This idea of assimilation is also present in the work of Mike Rose where he had to assimilate himself into students who were in the vocational track. Even though Rose did not belong to the vocational track where intellectually inferior or "slow" kids are grouped, he was able to assimilate aptly. The new self whom Rose created himself from the vocational track made him more competitive and keen when he was placed back in the college prep track. Roses social hurdle of interlectual capability and Lius socio-economic hindrance that only ASWP can succeed were both surmounted by both authors by reinvention of the second identity which is more apt to the new environment where dreams are pursued.

Second of all, it is important to note how assimilation supports the similarity among social groups and cultural pluralist celebrate difference among the social groups.

Thus, it is imperative to discuss who actually assimilates who is the cultural pluralist and what really happens. "Unlike assimilations, cultural pluralists celebrate differences among groups rather than seek to obliterate them. They argue that cultural diversity is a healthy and normal condition that does not preclude equal rights and the mutual understandings about civic responsibilities needed to sustain a democratic nation-state"(608). This is the reason that the assimilation and cultural pluralism have to coexist. If one only accepts something new and learn from the old self, then the process of the assimilation will no longer be meaningful. This is the reason why you keep the old but modify with the new surroundings and ideas. Eric Liu knew the fact that he could not be white physically. He was Chinese. He also knew that he could fit into the white environment if he transforms himself internally. What he could not do externally, he was able to do it internally.

Furthermore, it is very important to understand and relate the concepts that are mentioned above are with Fredrickson stated about the cultural pluralism. "Of the four models of American ethic relations, the one I believe offers the best hope for a just and cohesive society is a cultural pluralism that is fully inclusive and based on the free choices of individuals to construct or reconstruct their own ethnic identities" (608).

Fredricksons best hope for the just and cohesive society is a cultural pluralism. Cultural pluralism gives options and it is individual will to construct or reconstruct his or her image. Without a doubt, cultural pluralism is the key to this difficult and a long struggle in American society. This battle can be seen in Lius work when he reconstructed himself to an American who is most American-like. Even though he was an Asian American, he was whiter than most people and most American than most people. The reason is because he had completely transformed himself to a different person internally and externally. One of the options he was able to observe was being white fit in his high-class friends. He is married to white woman, speak perfect English may be better than most of the Americans in this country since he was the speechwriter for the former

Throughout the course of this paper, the key concepts of "institutionally oppressive forces" and the notion of "social class" will be broken down and overcome by the attitude of ones willingness to success and attainment of education. I believe that in order to gain a standing in the social ladder or to overcome an "institutionally oppressive forces" one has to gain an alternative perspective from the original point of view. One of the most affective in doing so is attainment of education.

Above all, there are many obstacles that are in the way of the American Dream. They are simply color, class and culture. However we have assimilation, cultural pluralism and equal opportunity to fight the battle against the obstacles that hinder our way to the American Dream. The American dream is surmounting the difference in socio-economic system, overcoming the institutionally oppressive forces and reinventing the ethnic identity in the multicultural society. Eric Liu was able to do this with ease because he knew what chances to take and what he has to be in order to fulfill his dreams. He may be simply state that he was just trying to fit in and succeed. However Eric Liu did everything that he can do surmount and assimilate many obstacles and drawbacks

Living together before marriage increased by 45% between 170 and 10. In recent years, approximately 60 % of people getting married have lived together . But only about 5 % of people living together end up getting married. Therefore at least some people learn things about relationship that helps them avoid bad relationship.

Testing the relationship before tying the knot really ensure a better marriage in the long run. Now, Id like to concentrate on advantages of cohabitation.

Living together before marriage is a good way for people to find out whether they would be compatible marriage partners. Knowing the partner is not the same as living with him or her. Dating just from time to time, partners are on their best behaviour, they avoid confrontation because they are eager to have someone love them and insecure in the temporary relationship. Moreover, this super nice behaviour may partly account for the radical changes in behaviour, personality and attitudes (almost always for worse) that sometimes occurs shortly after marriage.

Shacking up with somebody is a total different experience. People can get the full picture about who they are. If both partners are not ready yet for marriage but want a steady partner, living together offers obvious advantages. It can be real life learning experience of loving and adjusting on equal terms with another person. It is just one of many possible "tests" for a potential partner. The best predictor of good marriage is a long, relatively smooth relationship, in which wide variety of problems and successes are experienced. Living together measures the couples strengths and weaknesses in such areas as; communication, personality, expectations, leisure activities, conflict resolutions, financial management, parenting etc… Cohabitation provides a great opportunity for couples to get to know each other better, learn communication, decision-making, prepare for marriage and prevent future problems.

Living together helps people distinguish between being "in love" and being in a good relationship. We have to remember that love brings out the best and something worse as well. Cohabitating partners learned that though they love each other very much, there are times when they cant stand each other. The key to any relationship is compromise and communication.

Living together is the only way to get to know the other person. It is important to know how the other person handles their finances, how they deal with crisis, how messy are they? You truly cannot get a really feel for that unless you are with that person for longer than a date or weekend together.

In addition, living together give partners the full picture of the person they live with. Give the picture of many possible future situations such as educational and career plans of both, having and caring for children by both, family relationship, religious matter, life-style, social lives, division of labour etc…

Many of media reports about study exaggerate the link between cohabitation and divorce. The study found a small differences (%) in the rate of divorce. But actually the reports did not draw the conclusion that living together before marriage was the cause of the relationship ending. According to sociologist William Moster it may not be the experience of cohabiting but the people who live together before marriage have different values than couples who do not.

Maybe more people living together before marriage would reduce the divorce rate. Cohabitation is much more accepted by this generation. I believe that our education generation is trying not to make the mistakes of previous generations of marrying someone they hardly know.

Anyway we have to remember that any relationships are up to a little bit of luck, lots efforts, individual circumstances and compatibility.

In conclusion Id like to say

A RELATIONSHIP IS LIKE A DANCE; TO STAY CLOSE WITHOUT STEPPING ON EACH OTHERS TOES TAKES PRACTICE.

I am writing to you today because I suspect a widow women with the name of Jessica Cross to be practicing witchcraft. I am a European man, by the name of Samuel Finn. For the past few weeks there have been some strange occurrences in the wildlife, in the crops and in the animals. Jessica Cross recently inherited her husbands land, and wealth. This is the land that I tried to purchase from him just seven months ago. I am familiar with the practices of witchcraft. I am writing to give you some information on How to Spot a Witch. I will tell you what to look for when searching for a witch and give you a brief outline of what to do.

When looking for witchcraft in anyone, you look for strange behaviors. Or you might want to look for marks on the victims body. The devil will leave marks on the victims, like being branded. This is the first thing you want to look for when trying to spot a witch. These spots can vary in size. They almost look like a mosquito or fleabite. When you locate the spot you must poke the spot with a needle or something sharp. If it does not hurt the victim or make them bleed, they can be considered to be a witch. Another way is if the victim has a third nipple. The witch uses the third teat to suckle demons so they can stay on earth longer and stay healthier.

There are three more ways to find out if they are witches. There is the swimming test. You pour holy water all over your suspect and then tie them up so they cannot swim, or make it so they can barely move. Dont put too much extra weight on the victim or they will sink. Next you tie a rope around their waist and toss them into the river. If they float they are considered to be a witch.

If you ask the right questions at the right time you can get information out of them. You need to know when it is the right time to ask the questions. If you catch them off guard they will reveal to you that they are a witch. They are clever but you can catch them off guard.

Order Custom SMOKING paper

The last way is nabbing the Elusive Imp. You have to catch them with their familiars. Imps are in animal form and they are believed to last only 4 hours without suckled by their master or mistress. When you have the witch in prison make a peephole where you can keep a close eye on what the witch is doing. If you see any type of animal in the cell it is probably an Imp.

I hope this will encourage you to go out and hunt witches. I hope this will help you along your travels. Thank you for supporting the fight against witchcraft.

Dickinsons intense curiosity towards mortality was present in

much of her work, and is her legacy as a poet.

Because I could Not Stop for Death is one of Emily Dickinsons Order Custom Essay on emily dickinson

most discussed and famous poems due to its ambiguous, and unique

view on the popular subject of death. Death in this poem is told

as a womans last trip, which is headed toward eternity. This poem

helps to characterize and bring death down to a more personal

level. Different from the more popular views of death being

brutal and cruel, Dickinson makes death seem passive and easy.

The theme of the poem being that death is natural and unstoppable

for everybody, but at the same time giving comfort that it is

not the end of a souls journey. The reader can recognize the

poems theme by analysing its voice, imagery, figures of speech,

form, diction and especially symbolism; all of which help the

reader to understand the poems meaning. The precise form that

Dickinson uses throughout the poem helps convey her message to

the reader. The poem is written in five quatrains. The way in

which each stanza is written i!

n a quatrain gives the poem unity and makes it easy to read. Because I

Could Not Stop for Death starts to gives the reader a feeling of forward

movement throughout the second and third quatrain. For example, in

line 5, Dickinson begins deaths journey with a slow, forward movement,

which can be seen as she writes, We slowly drove-He knew no haste.

The third quatrain seems to speed up as the trinity of death, immortality,

and the speaker pass the children playing, the fields of grain, and

the setting sun one after another. The poem seems to get faster as

life goes through its course. In lines 17 and 18, however, the poem

seems to slow down as Dickinson writes, We paused before a House that

seemed / A Swelling of the Ground-. The reader is given a feeling of

life slowly ending. Another way in which Dickinson uses the form of the

poem to convey a message to the reader occurs on line four as she writes,

And Immortality. The word Immortality is given a line by its! elf to

show its importance. Perhaps the most notable way in which Dickinson

uses form is when she ends the poem with a dash, which seems to indicate

that the poem is never ending, just as eternity is never ending.

I heard a Fly buzz-when I died, points to a disbelief in heaven or any

form of afterlife. In this poem, a woman is lying in bed with her family

and friends standing all around waiting for her to die. While the family

is waiting for her to pass on, she is waiting for ...the King... This

symbolizes some sort of god that will take her away. As the woman dies,

her eyes, or windows as they are referred to in the poem, fail and

then she ...could not see to see-. As she died she saw the light

but then her eyes, or windows, failed and she saw nothing. This is the

suggestion of there being no afterlife. The womans soul drifted off into

nothingness because there was no afterlife for it to travel to. This is

the complete opposite belief about afterlife in Dickinsons other poem,

Because I Could Not Stop for Death, which indicated that life is a

never-ending journey. These two poems deal with similar topics however

they are entirely different in that one believes in lif! e after death

and the other does not.

Life, death, and reincarnation are portrayed in Emily Dickinsons poem I

Felt A Funeral In My Brain. The use of words associated with death gives

the poem an ominous and dark persona. To add to this tone, important

words that are strong in meaning are capitalized. At the beginning of

this poem the feelings of grief and pain are evident. Throughout the

rest of the poem, there was a strong sense that the speaker needs to

make a choice between a world full of trouble and pain or a heaven

that brings solitude and peace. This is all part of a vicious cycle.

Sometimes when life doesnt turn out for the best, you need to wait until

your cycle is up. This is reflected clearly at the end of the poem.

The speaker lives life, passes away, and is reborn again into this world

all throughout this poems entirety. The first two words of this poem

reveal strong feelings. The words I felt show that the speaker is

talking about themselves. In line 1, the words I felt a funeral in!

my brain, sparks thoughts of death. The word funeral combined with

the word brain can be simplified into the fact that death was inside

the speaker. and mourners to and fro/kept treading-treading-till it

seemed/that sense was breaking through-(,,4). Here the speaker is

bothered by their inner death that keeps mourning throughout their head.

The dashes between treading-treading-,allow a pause between the two

words, inducing a long, repetitive treading. This repetition causes

irritation. Finally, sense was breaking through (4). This simply means

that the constant repetition is now starting to make sense. A feeling

of relief has surfaced, but only for a short while. In the third stanza

voices start to take over by opening a box. Shown in lines through 11,

and then I heard them lift a box/and creak across my soul/with those

same boots of lead. This box is opened and all the problems and troubles

lingering inside are released upon the speaker like boots of !

lead weighing the speaker down. These problems build up and the space

began to toll. Portraying suicidal thoughts, the speaker cant take

anymore and its all beginning to toll, meaning that it is coming close

to the end. This poem has a darker persona than the others, because

of the suicidal implications. The word finished is emphasized like

other words throughout the poem, but the use of finished at the end

of this poem fits accordingly. It also fits well at the end of this

poem because not only was the poem over but it also signifies the end

of life and the start of a new one. The lines separating then at the

very end make it seem as though the words are fading away as did the

thoughts of the speaker from the past. The speaker made it through the

cycle of life, living, dying and rebirth. Each stage was a hard endeavour,

with some, followed a period of relief, and others followed with a sense

of desperation, as if things will never get better. Heaven and Earth!

s descriptions contrast each other so much, but no matter how peaceful

heaven seems, the gloomy tone still lurks throughout. The vicious cycle

of life will always continue, as was reflected in the poem.

Emily Dickinsons views on death changed from poem to poem depending on

her mood. Her writings also spanned over many years and one can see

a progression in her thoughts on the subject of death as she matured

as a person. Dickinson was not as interested in detail, but rather the

circumference of the idea. In these three poems, Emily has also suggested

the uncertainty and uncontrollability of death. Everyone has these plans

of how things are supposed to go when we die. Or we just assume that we

will experience a peaceful extinguishment of life. The persona of these

poems signifies that, even though we might have plans about the end,

death is uncontrollable and unimaginable.

Death is the supreme unknown; Mankind naturally fears what is unknown.

Emily Dickinson is no different. Her works Because I Could Not Stop

For Death, I Heard A Fly Buzz When I Died, and I Felt A Funeral In My

Brain all explored the subject of death. She was naturally scared of the

thought of dying and explored many of the great questions in her poetry.

Is there a Heaven or an afterlife? If you kill yourself will you still

go to heaven? Is it your fate when you die? These are just some of the

questions that people have asked themselves, and because Emily Dickinson

is deceased, she now knows all the answers.

Global Culture Challenges

Synopsis of key issues in this case

ARPCO operates in a global environment; however, ARPCO does not have a shared culture that crosses borders. The local culture has a stronger influence on the way business is conducted than the corporate culture, which is proving to be a major challenge for ARPCO management. Due to corporate culture immaturity and undefined values, ARPCO cannot support the growth of its most talented people on a global level.

If APRCO does not address the culture crisis, legal matters are bound to evolve and corporate image will be tarnished. Ultimately, this would lead to negative impacts for APRCOs bottom line and would significantly reduce its ability to attract and retain talented people.

What is the challenge Wollen faces in making the decision to promote Lewis? What is her responsibility to Lewis?

The challenge Wollen faces in making the decision to promote Lewis is whether she can break through the culture barriers and obtain buy-in on a plan that supports Lewis in the new position. The culture barriers are strong, as can be seen with Abbotts resistance to accept Lewis after learning of his race. If Wollen and Lewis decide to move forward with the promotion, a well thought out plan approved from the top will be required to ensure success for Lewis and for ARPCO. Without the proper support, Lewis could fail in a job that he was well prepared to do, which would be painful to Lewis and his family.

Wollen has three major responsibilities to Lewis. First, she should make him aware of the key risks and challenges associated with the new position. Second, she should describe to Lewis her commitment and ARPCOs commitment to support him in the new position. Third, she must follow through on her commitment to support Lewis. Ultimately, the decision to accept the opportunity or not should be made by Lewis after the risks have been clarified.

Is it always wrong to consider gender, race, and ethnicity in promotion decisions, even if the "equal" opportunity might end a managers career?

Gender, race, and ethnicity should never be considered in promotion decisions. The decision should be based instead on an individuals qualifications. In this case, Lewis was intelligent, hardworking, experienced, creative, and a top performer on the fast track who was the most qualified for the new position. Therefore, Lewis should be given the option to accept the position regardless of his race.

Evidence that promotion decisions should never consider gender, race, and ethnicity can be found in the Nineteenth Century Civil Rights Act. The Nineteenth Century Civil Rights Act provides protection against employment discrimination, which includes discriminatory practices such as bias in hiring, promotion, job assignment, termination, compensation, and various types of harassment. Additionally, the courts have ruled in such cases that employers need to meet a "but for" test. In other words, the employer must prove that the same employment decision would have been made for the same reasons regardless of sex or minority status (Walker, 1, p. 10).

Since globalization is a very real environment factor in business, what are the challenges U.S. corporations face in the changing environment?

As the environment changes to increasingly conduct business in a global framework, U.S. corporations are challenged with shaping corporate culture for the new workplace. Immigration, technology, emerging markets and economies, mergers, joint ventures, strategic alliances and foreign investment have brought all the worlds citizens to one anothers doorstep. People must now learn to communicate, work and compete with others who are not like themselves.

"Companies may be putting an emphasis on creating diverse workforces, but more minorities claim they are facing barriers to promotions once on the job" (Armour, 001, USA Today.com) According to Armour, the number of employees filing federal claims regarding discrimination in promotions based on race has nearly doubled since 10. Further evidence includes a 1 poll by Society for Human Resources Management, which concluded that nearly 75% of employers say that minorities face barriers to advancement.

Companies that do not provide shared cultural values will loose competitive position in the global marketplace. "A Fortune magazine survey found that CEOs cite organizational culture as their most important mechanism for attracting, motivating, and retaining talented employees, a capability they consider the single best predictor of overall organizational excellence." (Daft, 00, p. 4)

What are the risks associated with Lewis promotion?

There are a number of risks associated with Lewiss promotions, which impact Lewis, Wollen and ARPCO. The first is that Lewis could fail in a job that he was well prepared to do, which would be painful to Lewis and his family. The second risk is that if Lewis fails then ARPCOs corporate image could suffer. Thirdly, if Lewis fails in the new position it will be reflected in Wollens performance record. Finally, if his promotion is passed over, then the company is subject to a discrimination law suit and Lewis may not remain long with ARPCO.

There are many risks associated with Lewis promotion and each could potentially be very detrimental. The only foreseeable way for ARPCO to reduce its risk and create an environment that eliminates future risk, is to reshape the culture for conducting business in the global arena.

What are the benefits to Wollen and to the organization if Lewis is promoted?

If Lewis promotion is successful, then ARPCO and Wollen would realize significant benefits. For example, ARPCO would avoid legal issues and improve corporate image through increased diversity, which would enable them to attract and retain talented people. Wollens benefits would include recognition for developing Lewis and for moving the companys diversity and culture a big step forward. Wollen would also gain self satisfaction with helping Lewis progress is career.

What managerial skills would you use (if you were Wollen and you did promote Lewis), to insure the optimum benefit to all the "players" in this situation?

Only one key managerial skill stands out, that would insure optimum benefit for all, and that is Human skill. The Human skill required in this case is made up of leadership, mentoring, and relationship building.

Through leadership and mentoring, both Lewis and Wollen benefit. Lewis would have the advantage of an "assistant coach" and he would have the needed level of trust and confidence to be successful. Wollen would benefit personally and professionally.

Through relationship building, both Lewis and Abbott benefit. If Wollen develops a relationship with Abbott, then she helps reduce the culture gap. A well developed relationship would also provide support for both Lewis and Abbott when issues arise.

Recommendations

The global business environment has presented major challenges for ARPCO. In order to retain competitive position, avoid discrimination law suits, create a diverse workforce, attract talented people, eliminate bottom line impact, retain key employees and fully leverage intellectual capital, ARPCO needs to create culture change. Unless the culture crisis is addressed, ARPCO will continue to have difficulty conducting business in the global arena.

It is recommended that a Culture Change Plan be developed. Upper management must approve and sponsor the plan. Human Resources will facilitate the program and leverage middle managers to execute the plan. A proposed plan has been created and should be used as a starting point. See Table 1 for the proposed plan.

Drugs In Sports

When athletes use drugs In many schools athletes are required to sign a contract in order to play sports. The contracts include of many rules and regulations that prohibit activities that will jeopardize the athletes performance. The use of drugs and alcohol are strictly forbidden. Vandalism and other actions that would result in any type of illegal happenings is also banned. The main problem with the contracts is that the students dont always obey them. Many athletes will still go out and party and drink and smoke and get into other activities that will harm their minds and bodies. Stimulants are drugs that stimulate the central nervous system and produce an increase in alertness and activity. They include caffeine, cocaine, and the amphetamines. The amphetamines are composed of three closely related drugs that stimulate the central nervous system and promote a feeling of alertness and an increase in speech and general physical activity. Some people take these drugs under medical supervision to control their appetite, but many of these drugs are used at parties to get high. Overuse and abuse have been associated with all of the stimulant drugs, but risks are the greatest with the amphetamines and cocaine. Narcotics are drugs that relieve pain and often induce sleep. Narcotics include opium and drugs derived from opium, such as morphine, codeine, and heroin. Narcotics also include certain synthetic chemicals that have a morphine-like action, such as methadone. Most of these drugs will leave a lasting effect for more then one day. Like a hangover from alcohol, these drugs will make you extremely tired or even sick the next day. Drugs are prohibited by athletic departments because they alter your performance. If an athlete uses one of these drugs they can have lasting effect on them sometime during a game or at practice. All drugs are illegal, and by athletes using them they set a bad example. Many younger students look up to the star athletes in a school and if they use drugs that is not a good impression to make. Schools do have punishments for athletes caught violating the contract but most of the time they arent harsh enough. Drugs are a very serious problem in all students lives, but if athletesuse them they can have a even worse effect. They could even jeopardize possible scholarships that an athlete could achieve. Drugs in any shape or form have soo much of a serious effect of the body that noone should even want to do them and if they do theyre only wasting their own lives away.

Freshers week is a very important part of coming to University, it helps you navigate your way through this difficult phase of change. It allows you to get aquainted with the members of your corridor who you will probably end up being life long friends with. It also allows you to get to know your way round campus and town even if you cant remember in the morning.

On a cultural level however it seems that something is almost programmed into everyone during freshers week, and that is the County Spirit, we arent told what it is, or where it came from, just that its there. It isnt until later on in the year

that you realise what it is, but ill talk about that later.

In freshers week, we are given free reign to express ourselves, it is a possibility that this could be seen as a period of self-exploration where we find out who we really are and what we want out of life. It allows us to sign up to societies and clubs that we perhaps have an interest in.

Freshers week is mainly seen as an introduction to the ins and outs of the many facets of Uni life. Well, i say Uni life but what i really mean is probably more to do with the rules of many drinking games.

During Freshers week the County Songs could be heard from miles around. Ranging from the ripping of Cartmel and Lonsdale to simple Countys the best. Initially, the songs seem to have no meaning, just words to sing when your crawling round campus or town.

But soon the songs for County are almost seen as anthems. They show support and patriotism for the College and are seen as an aid to bring members together due to the fact that everyone pulls together so that we can drown out everyone else.

And this year, we are not supposed to be teaching these particular songs to the freshers - yeah right!

Cartmel. I know that im standing in the lions den when Im talking about this particularly sensitive subject however Ill say it anyway - COUNTY IS BETTER THAN CARTMEL. Back to the serious stuff. The rivalry between these two colleges has been around since they were built. It is probably due to the fact that they are close together and thats about it!

All colleges have a rivalry with each other especially in sport as everyone wants to win. But it doesnt seem to match the practical jokes and stunts that come between county and cartmel. The rivalry has excelled to such a level that each college

literally hates the other. They even refuse to go drinking in each others bars.

But when it really boils down to it, no-one really knows why they hate Cartmel or County as they havent done anything to personally offend them. But they were taught to hate each other by the years before them.

But everyone hates Pendle because theyve got nice rooms but the rivalry isnt as bad.

Again another large contribution to the County Spirit.

Sport is also quite a large part of County Spirit especially with the lads. It was said that FYLDE was the sporting college however this year, COUNTY has produced many a good team. Sport has helped join together not only first years that may not know each other and so making new friends, but also the many years that are part of the college. It is another way of being part of the college, the pride of being able to play for your college and the support that you get from your college. Again, all contribute to County Spirit.

To conclude, County Spirit cannot be defined as a single thing, but as an emalgamation of many. What we have found was that the spirit in county has infact got two levels. The generic level where everyone is involved and feels the same thing, such as the kitchen system. Simply being part of the County family creates a tacit bond between people even if they have only known each other a couple of weeks. This doesnt have a profound impact on people, but provides the safety and familiarisation needed to progress onto the personal level where particular parts of county, for instance their sports teams interest you.

The nd level allows you to decide what you can give the county community, whether it is sporting performance, music, or laughter. But you can also decide what county can do for you.

Passive Participation of Client and Therapist

In acupuncture, there is little participation between the client and the therapist. The diagnosis done by feeling the pulse, observing the color of the face, texture of the tongue, body appearance, and skin problems over the ear. Western information is gathered with the complaints, type of work of the patient, living habits, physical environment, emotional and family life, and family history obtained. Once the diagnosis is completed the procedure begins.

According to Eric Chen, a student at Pacific University, ¡§patients should be placed in a suitable position.¡¨ Because Acupuncture needles are metallic, solid, and hair-thin, people experience acupuncture differently, but most feel no or minimal pain as the needles are inserted. Some people are energized by treatment, while others feel relaxed. Improper needle placement, movement of the patient, or a defect in the needle can cause soreness and pain during treatment. (NCCAM, 00)

Additionally, Chen adds that if the patients are kept in an awkward position, undue fatigue and fainting accidents such as bending or breaking of the needles, etc. may occur. Usually, the supine position is required when needling the points of the frontal and facial regions, chest and abdomen, and the anterior aspect of the lower extremities. A prone position is preferable for occipital, neck, lumbar-dorsal regions and the posterior aspect of the lower extremities, while the recumbent position facilitates needling of points on the lateral areas of the body. For the points on the head, back, and upper extremities, a comfortable sitting position is also suitable. It is very important to note that with proper usage and in a comfortable position, acupuncture is very safe and useful.

The play The American dream consists of five characters;

Grandma, Mommy, Daddy, The Young Man and Mrs. Barker.

These characters are a representation of abstract ideas

or principles. This play is a simple story which

consists of an allegory or moral lesson. The moral of

this story is to reveal the substitution of artificial

for real values in our society through the exchange of

abstract concepts by the characters. This play is about

a family in which the realities of life are expressed

through values that are a fabricated substitute of

current values. A controlling and sadistic

disciplinarian, the character of the mother plays a

role that is reprimanding and violent. It begins with

the Mommy and Daddy in which the Mother seems to always

be distracted or upset because of the actions of others

that do not appeal to her. Daddy is kept under a tight

reign and therefore loses his sense of masculinity. He

is viewed as a negative individual and presence.

Therefore, Daddy is the source in which punishment is

displayed. Incidentally, Mommy and Daddy had adopted a

child bumble twenty years ago in which Mommy had

traumatized. Mrs. Barker provided Bumble to the

family. Throughout the play the adoption agencys (Bye

Bye Adoption Service) representative, Mrs Barker, who

they had requested to visit, remaind totally oblivious

of the purpose of her visit although she is aquainted of

her shared history with the family, she becomes the

description of the responsible American housewife.

Grandma, who becomes the commentator of the play is a

scream! She enters with gifts that wrapped very neatly.

These boxes have a significant meaning. The boxes

portray the contents of the American dream. Grandmas

brilliant wit contains some dazzling, if not exactly

unbiased, observations on the treatment of, expectations

from, and inner reality of, the elderly. She comes off

as the most intelligent person in the play, and the one

we identify with the most-even if her metaphysical

capacities for hiding objects, forgetting who her

strumpet daughter is, and desiring with spiritual

enthusiasm, the flesh of the young who may or may not be

her own are not necessarily everyones abstract concept

of satisfactions successful pursuit. Grandma becomes

the embodiment of meaning. Alas, The Young Man arrives

at the door. Grandma swoons over his handsome and agile

nature, yet, he reveals he is not complete despite all

he posesses. The Young Man IS The American Dream (within

Grandmas realm) who has come to replace her. In

essence, the Young Man assumes that identify for us (the

American people) only because Grandma gives him that

symbolic interpretation. Grandma has the Young Man take

the boxes outside, which signifies the replacement of

artificial or translucent values. Yet, the ending of

Grandmas character and identity is promising in an

extreme way. Although she leaves with the boxes, she

does not leave the theater. She actually moves to front

stage in which she speaks to the audience in the end.

The final words she relays wrap up the optimistic idea

she conveys. Well, I guess that just about wraps it

up. I mean, for better or worse, this is a comedy, and I

dont think wed better go any further. No, definitely

not. So, lets leave things as they are right now. . . .

while everybodys happy . . . while everybodys got what

he wants . . . or everybodys got what he thinks he

wants. Good night, dears. This phrase consists of the

revolutionary principles of this country that we havent

lived up to yet and hope to fulfil someday. The American

Dream is another of Albees many commentaries on our

society. Albee saw that in every one of us there exists

an ideal, the American dream. While this dream is

different for us all, Albee felt that all of us simply

expect our American dream to come true. This play

examines the anarchy that can result from the

realization that life just doesnt work the way we all

imagine it can. Albees goal is to make us all more

aware of the way we think, so that we may alter it to be

more correct and fulfilled.

Cloning of Mammals

Most people panic when they hear the words "human cloning". Crazy thoughts run through their heads, imaginations run wild. They think of people exactly the same, and no one person would be different. Cloning to some people is even considered "evil." Most religious people believe that is "Playing God", however, is not a magical way of creating life. It is a scientific procedure that will save many lives, cure diseases and let infertile couple have biological children of their own.

The definition of a clone, an organism, or group of organisms, derived from another organism by an asexual reproductive process (Church of Scotland, 0). With other techniques scientists can isolate sections of DNA representing single genes, determine their nucleotide sequences, and reproduce them in the laboratory. This offers the possibility of creating entirely new genes with commercially or medically desirable properties. I think cloning of mammals is a good thing, because It can help many people that need transplants and there is no one to help them, then they can use cloning of mammals.

It is a scientific procedure that will save many lives, cure diseases and let infertile couple have biological children of their own. The benefits of human cloning are many. One of the most vital problems that are happening in the world today is finding organ donors that have compatible organs with the person that needs them. Using cloning technology, you can clone a persons organs, grow them, and then use them for a transplant. The organ is guaranteed 100% compatible with the patient. This procedure could save millions upon millions of lives. I can not understand how anyone could say that we have " A moral obligation to ban cloning" when it could save millions of peoples lives.

While it may take time for cloning to be fully accepted, therapeutic cloning will likely be the first step in that direction. Therapeutic cloning is the process by which a persons DNA is used to grow an embryonic clone. However, instead of inserting this embryo into a surrogate mother, its cells are used to grow stem cells. These stem cells can be used as a human repair kit. They can grow replacement organs, such as hearts, livers and skin. They can also be used to grow neurons to cure those who suffer from Alzheimers, Parkinsons or Rett Syndrome.

Heres how therapeutic cloning works

DNA is extracted from a sick person.

The DNA is then inserted into an enucleated donor egg.

The egg then divides like a typical fertilized egg and forms an embryo.

Stem cells are removed from the embryo.

Any kind of tissue or organ can be grown from these stem cells to treat the sick.

If human cloning proceeds, scientists plan to use somatic cell nuclear transfer, which is the same procedure that was used to create Dolly the sheep. In a real life Scenario, in 16, a marvel of modern science occurred in Midlothian, Scotland. Dr. Ian Wilmut did what most scientists believed impossible. He created Dolly, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult. The actual birth of Dolly did not occur until February of 17, and when the announcement came there was widespread controversy all over the world. Not wanting to be outdone, the United States countered the creation of Dolly with one of their own. They inserted a gene from a jellyfish into the DNA structure of a monkey, effectively turning the monkeys fingernails red. While this doesnt seem like too big of an accomplishment, primates are the closest genetic relatives to human beings. After these acts were announced, the public became worried.

Somatic cell nuclear transfer begins when doctors take the egg from a donor and remove the nucleus of the egg, creating an enucleated egg. A cell, which contains DNA, is then taken from the person who is being cloned. The enucleated egg is then fused together with the cloning subjects cell using electricity. This creates an embryo, which is implanted into a surrogate mother through in vitro fertilization. If the procedure is successful, then the surrogate mother will give birth to a baby that is a clone of the cloning subject at the end of a normal gestation period. Of course, the success rate is only about one or two out of 100 embryos. It took 77 attempts to create Dolly.

Another use for human cloning could be to bring deceased relatives back to life. Imagine using a piece of your great-grandmothers DNA to create a clone of her. In a sense, you could be the parent of your great-grandmother. This opens the door to many ethical problems, but its a door that could soon be opened. One American couple, who has had difficulty dealing with the death of their infant daughter, is paying $500,000 to clone their daughter using preserved skin cells.

The process of cloning can loosely be compared to making a copy take the genetic makeup from one creature and create another creature with the exact same makeup. What most people are unaware of is the capacity for changing the original creature and making its clone better. Genetic splicing has been around for quite sometime now, and it seems to be an accepted method of cutting out unwanted genes from a DNA strand.

Cloning could take this idea one step further and create people that are immune to disease. There would never be another bubonic plague or AIDS epidemic again. As with all technology, it is the spirit in which it is used that determines whether it is good or evil. The atomic bomb is regarded as an evil creation by millions of people, and yet it may have saved millions more lives than it has taken.

Some say that to clone a human being would be playing God. It is hard to think of an instance throughout history where someone has not done the very same thing, if in a different way. When you step on an ant, you take Gods job out of his hands and put it in your own. When you eat a steak, or some celery, the farmer was playing God, with the lives of these organisms. People do these things everyday without a second thought, and yet they are quick to condemn a scientist who is trying to make the world a better place to live. If making the world a better place is playing God, its about time that some more people step up to bat and take a swing.

There is also the chance that a cure for cancer, or at least an understanding of cancer may be found using cloning techniques. Here you will be able to see how cancerous cells "mutiny" against the normal cells in that area. The way that cells switch themselves on and off can be found, which may be a cure. The biology of the cancer cells differentiating may also be found, which will all be useful in cutting down the number of deaths to cancer each year which can only be to our advantage

Taking cloning as a whole there is also the advantage that if cloning is allowed, there is the chance that rare species may be cloned so there may never be an extinct animal again. Although bringing back animals that are already extinct may have detrimental effects (e.g. Jurassic Park), there must be a case for keeping all animals that currently roam the earth.

In Rifkins essay, he finds everything bad about cloning, but if he had a family member that had some disease that couldnt be cured, he would of found some good things about cloning. Cloning can help many diseases that there are no medications that can help cure them. Cloning of human beings should be allowed in the United States. This procedure has the potential to herald a new age of technological and biomedical advantages the likes of which the human race may never see again.

CONFLICT

One concept in literary that shows itself as the work progresses is conflict. Conflict is a struggle or clash between opposing characters, forces, or emotions (Sime 11). Multiple conflicts lie within the short story "Miss Brill". Woman versus society plays a major conflict in the story. Miss Brill is virtually pitted against the park goers. Miss Brill has this idea in her head that she is rival to the existence of the park or maybe even the world in her case. In her mind, the park goers are there to see her, not to enjoy the park. An example of this false sense of belongs is found on page 70, which states "Even (Miss Brill) had a part and came every Sunday. No doubt somebody would have noticed if she hadnt been there; she was part of the performance after all." In following couple of paragraphs, Miss Brill versus society clash head on and societies true views of her are placed upon her and she is utterly devastated and heart-broken.

POINT OF VIEW

Mansfield chose a point of view that tells the reader how the main character sees herself from an outside angle. The story is told from an omniscient type of view. The short story has limited views from a handful of character. The author uses the main character, Miss Brill, to show her thoughts and feeling of others around her. The only other characters that have a meaningful impact on the protagonist, are the boy and girl that come in at the end of the story. Both the boy and girl show their true thoughts of the main character. For example on page 71, that states " Why does she come here at all--who wants her? Why doesnt she keep her silly old mug at home? Its her fu-fur which is so funny, giggled the girl. Its exactly like a fried whiting. " After this short piece of dialogue, there are various point of views toward one character.

LANGUAGE

The element of language exist in every piece of literary and Katherine Mansfields "Miss Brill" is no exception. One literary technique sticks out above all, imagery. Imagery appeals to the sense through color, shapes, and textures in "Miss Brill". The usage of imagery impacts the story greatly from being to end . An example of this literary technique in action is shown on page 6 "Little children ran among them, swooping and laughing; little boys with big white silk bows under their chins, little girls, little French dolls, dressed up in velvet and lace."
