"War is always a betrayal of the young by the old, of
soldiers by politicians, of idealists by cynics."
~ Chris Hedges (The Oregonian)
Our nation has been fighting a battle of power. Power to have control over a cause that has not been fully explained. This cause is tearing nations apart and questions keep flashing in our heads. What is this cause? Why are we at war with a nation halfway around the world? Why isnt other nations supporting us, the most powerful country in the world? Should I be scared? We are a nation of power and prestige, why should I be scared? However, a tragic and devastating event occurred on September 11, 001. Our nation endured and lived through the deaths of thousands of people. Now, we the people of the United States are angry. Angry and scared that we are going to lose all of the power, prestige, freedom, and happiness that we created and live with. Slowly, the cycle of war begins. The focuses of our nation are stressed on the struggles and hardships that have been tolerated. The faults of our 'enemy nations are now pointed out and we are destroying them. Write my Essay on War
Chris Hedges and his book War Is a Far That Brings Us Meaning have brought new theories and explanations to many issues that have been recently been introduced. One theory in particular that has kept my interest has been on the subject of how a state destroys their culture and then attempts to bring down their enemy. What does this mean? First, a state will silence their own culture, and then the "enemy is dehumanized" and finally, everything is targeted toward "promoting and glorifying the myth, the nation, the cause" (Hedges 6). We have seen this constantly in the exact form and pattern. Since September 11th, the United States has forced their people to become an army against Iraq, Afghanistan, and their partners in 'terrorism. The suicide bombers, rulings done by Saddam Hussein and the deaths of thousands under his rule, and corrupt leaders have been pushed into our minds to force us to sympathize with the weak and unfortunate. It forces us to want to change the bad and take control of the situation. As this is occurring, the enemy is seen as immoral, selfish killers, only looking out for themselves. We seen their state and want them to pay for their wrong doings. We forget that they are humans as well. Finally, patriotism is the new target. "United We Stand", "God Bless America", "We the People", and "We Will Never Forget" are just a few to name the many. People are brought together by tragedy and hard times. In the United States case, the September 11th attacks were a reason to bring everyone together. National symbols now became something that is seen everyday. People were proud to be American. Glued to their televisions at night, watching a concert dedicated to New York where U, Faith Hill, Dave Matthews, and many others sang for the nation. Watching how President George W. Bush would speak to the country every night proclaiming our unity. Our nation because focused on the stars and stripes, not the deaths and torture.
Chris Hedges also explained how ones state is thrown into a "trance". A message is pushed how that the cause is just, the state is right, and everything that the states leaders are doing is good (Hedges 64). In the United States case, people are addicted to what they believe is a just cause. But in reality, "we feel guilty". We are "knocked off balance" in our perfect world (Hedges 74). We dont know what to expect and we become frightened of the reality of what is really happening. The killings make our nation angry and force them to stay glued to their televisions, wanting to see update after update. This is one of the most covered wars our nation has ever witnessed. People can see firsthand what is going on over in Iraq. However, we are only seeing what we want to see. This forces a different understanding of our culture and history. The past is "recreated to fit the myth" (Hedges 80). The myth in the case of the recent war with Iraq is the fact that we, the people of the United States of America, are doing a good deed in trying to recreate a government for Iraq.
Peace becomes "possible only when (the) culture no longer serves a cause or a myth but the most precious elusive of all human narratives truth" (Hedges 8). Will we ever know the truth?
