We often hear conflicting moral teachings from our religious and secular leader. Many claim to have the true messages of God or the true message of Christianity. We hear about Christian values, or Gods will, or what the Bible says, or Jesus says. How can we tell who is interpreting the Bible with the true understanding and who is consciously or unconsciously, merely using it to serve their own ends. In class we discussed and read different forms of good and evil. I believe that Jesus gives us the answer in the parable of the good and bad fruits. He tells us to judge a teacher or minister by his or her deeds, not by his or her claims. An example would be that a fig tree produces only figs, so a good teacher will advocate only good deeds and will live a life of good deeds. Now a tree that produces poisoned fruit, a false teacher, will advocate evil deeds and practice evil deeds, even while claiming to give godly advice. Nathaniel Hawthorne shows an abundance of good and evil in many of his stories. Good and evil is what started our world and has made us the individuals we are in todays society.

In the story "Young Goodman Brown" the story is sending you a message. It is telling you that things arent what they seem to be. Hawthorne uses symbols, metaphors and names to convey good and evil. Young Goodman Brown never realizes that evil had been sounding him his whole life. His name says it all, Goodman, he was the only one that was pure and innocent that was left in his town. He was the only one that had not faced the test of evil. When it came down to confronting it the force of evil was so great that he could not fight it. The force was so great that the devil had him wrapped around his pinky. The dangerous line in the struggle between good and evil is timeless and unchanging. Goodman Brown is forever altered in a way he did not foresee being possible by taking his walk with the devil. The temptations that arise in the forest is basically a way of getting the message across that one must not let things be what they are. We must live a life of knowing youre surrounding, and testing yourself.

The story "Young Goodman Brown" is similar to "The Minister in the Black Veil". The story attacks on original sin. Original sin is what isolates the minister and makes him the only weird one. This makes everyone afraid of him because he is different. The veil symbolizes evil impurity. The minister will not remove it from his face. The veil reveals sin and the minister is horrified because he sees his own reflection as being evil and the veil is a disguise. People are frightened of the minister in the veil because he is not being like everyone else. No one likes change and that is the same problem that the society in "Young Goodman Brown" is presented with. No one wanted to see things differently. Everyone is afraid of change and the lesson that the minister is trying to convey is that. If you live your life with the fear of evil you will never live a positive life. If you never try something different, you will never capture the necessary strength that is needed to test yourself

In todays society evil has taken over our spiritual and religious development. In our contemporary society there have been reports of priests committing inappropriate sexual acts against young innocent children of the church community. This act shows how society has lost touch with this sense of pure living that the puritans practiced. Pure living would be not letting temptation overpower the belief in peace, righteousness and community. It is clear to see that these priests succumbed to the temptation of evil. A puritan would have practiced the discipline, control and sacrifice that their religious beliefs require. This change has shown the society how evil can creep up on you. This event prepares the people to acknowledge the fact that evil is in great abundance in many different shapes and forms. Buy Good and EvilThe Ministers Black VeilYoung Goodman Brown term paper

As you can see good and evil has created our world. We are what nature intended us to be. We cannot change who we are but we can test ourselves against evil. We all must learn how to fight the temptations that nature has put before us. Everyone must try to be open minded about life and what it presents us with.

Who would have thought that a New Years resolution would actually change my life.I need to further my education and establish my credit.

On New Years Eve we were all getting ready to take a trip to my aunts house. During that five hour drive all I can do is think.

First, I thought about my children on how they have grown, smart, outgoing and kind they are. And how proud I am of them.

Then, I asked myself; I wonder if they are proud of ? I dont work, I dont have an education. I realized I was incomplete and unahppy because I felt that I could not pursue my interests due to my financial state and could not get a loan because I didn not have sufficient credit.

Finally, we got to my aunts house all our family was there. Time past and my aunt noticed how distant I was. She came tours me and asked me what was on my mind. I just started to ramble. I told her I couldnt get a good job because I didnt finish high school, and shared with her on how I always wanted to work for the criminal justice system, about how I needed to establish my credit. Then she asked me; What are you going to do about it? I glanced at her and responded, I dont know. A few hours later the New Year has started.

The thoughts continued in my mind for endless days. Until one morning I woke up and said out loud, I cant take this anymore! I need to establish my credit and I have to pursue my education.

Finally, on this day I took control of my life! I wrote a list of questions that I had, picked up the phone and called Education Direct!

I spoke with a customer service representative, asked her these following questions Is the school accredited? What are the admission requirements? How much was the course? How much would I have to pay a month? She answered all of my questions. She said I have up to two years to complete the course, and that I would only be paying forty dollars a month. I decided, I registered!

I received my first lesson on January 00, which it was Human Relations. I was so excited! I read all the directions and immediately started to study. My tow older children came home from school. I greated them and told them of what I had done. They both told me how proud they are of me. They said that soon I can make all my dreams come true.

Until this point in my studies the hardest taht it has been for me is my grammar and writing skills. The lesson that I have enjoyed the most has been World History. I am looking forward to my electives, my goal is to complete all my lessons by the summer. Bye July, my credit will be established and finally I have achieved my high school diploma.

This semester, bellowed the teacher as he addressed the room of high school seniors, I will make you all chemists. The class let out a collective groan. The teacher continued unfazed. You will all have to complete a real research project using the facilities of local universities. Like most of my classmates in the AP Chemistry course, I dreaded the huge amount of work that loomed before me. Little did I know that this work would help determine my future. In the months ahead, I committed more time to this one course than I ever had before, poring over chemistry textbooks and working in the laboratory into the early hours of the morning. I always had an inkling that my future lay in science and technology, and this experience proved it beyond question. The methodical laboratory preparations, the interweaving of theory and practice, and the tangible results of a successful experiment all appealed to my disciplined and inquisitive nature. By the end of my senior year, I had developed a solid foundation in the principles of chemistry, and just as my teacher had promised, I was on my way to becoming a chemist.

Despite my growing interest in chemistry, I still harbored dreams of becoming a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force at the time of my high school graduation. Even as I spent my evenings in the laboratory for AP Chemistry, I woke up early in the morning to run and do a routine of sit-ups and pushups. I was preparing for the rigorous physical and mental demands of the Air Force Academy. Over the course of previous summers, I had experienced the sweeping rush of glider school and had soloed in my first motorized aircraft. I hoped for the challenging life of an Air Force pilot and was on my way to making it a reality through sweaty self-discipline and intense mental focus. On one sunny afternoon, I saw a thick letter with a Colorado postmark in my mailbox. I was now a cadet at the Academy.

As with all military institutions, the first years at the Academy were intensely demanding. Strenuous endurance tests, high-level academic work, and hazing by upperclassmen made a junior cadets life extremely trying. Nonetheless, I thrived during these years because I never lost my sense of focus or my love of chemistry. Even as I dreamed of being a fighter pilot, I found my chemistry courses to be highly engaging and challenging. All cadets were given a choice of academic tracks, and I had chosen science and engineering. As in high school, I worked in the laboratory late at night and ran early in the morning. Whenever I got fatigued, I just remembered how close I was to fulfilling my goal of becoming a pilot.

After a visit to the ophthalmologist one day, my dreams of airborne glory were abruptly shot down. My vision did not meet the Air Force standards required of pilots. It was a crushing blow, and at first I did not know what to do. Nonetheless, I knew that I was not without direction. Once again, my life pushed me towards studying chemistry. This was a subject that I knew I would enjoy, so I packed up my science textbooks, threw away my flight training manuals, and headed back to my hometown college, the University of Texas at Austin (UTA).

Because of my two-year commitment to the United States Air Force, I was unable to apply to graduate school directly after college. Instead, I spent two years serving as an intelligence officer. From this job, I have greatly improved my analytic ability, communication skills, pressure management techniques, and patience as a researcher. Like chemists, intelligence officers often have to construct coherent models of reality from incomplete pieces of data. This position has offered me insights and training that no classroom setting could match. Nonetheless, I am ready to return to my first love, chemistry.

Although my life has taken some unexpected turns in the last few years, the field of chemistry has been an unwavering companion and a source of intellectual interest. Whether it was discovering research in high school, learning advanced chemical theories at the Air Force Academy, or presenting my findings at meetings of the Chemical Society, the lure of studying physical structures has always guided my decisions. My advanced research in electro-optic modulators and my course work in classes such as Molecular Orbital Theory have given me the analytical ability, laboratory skills, and theoretical knowledge to excel in a rigorous doctoral program. During my Ph.D. studies, I intend to focus on inorganic and materials chemistry in order to design new materials for use in industry. By a stroke of fate, the weak vision that prevented me from becoming a fighter pilot allowed me to envision my future as a successful chemist.

The Clint Water Tower

It stands high above the town of Clint looking down on us everyday. The Clint water tower has been a part of this town since and has not only served us for water purposes it has also gave us a sense of pride and made all who see it every day feel at home in the small, tight knit town of Clint. I see this water tower every day without knowing its purpose, how long its been here or if it even has water in it at all. In this report I will not only let you know how a water tower works or what it does for a community. I will also take you through a journey in which a fellow classmate and me took to scale the infamous Clint water tower.

How A Water Tower Works

Have you ever experienced a water failure? That is, have you ever turned on your faucet and found that no water came out of it? If you get your water from a municipal water system the answer is probably no. We have power failures all the time. Cable TV goes out all the time to and although less common, the phone system goes down ever so often. But the water in any city or suburb is always there. Water pressure is very reliable. A big reason for that level of reliability is the water tower. Water towers can be seen everywhere, especially in flat areas full of small towns (Just like Clint). Buy The clint water tower term paper

A water tower is an incredibly simple device. Although water towers come in all shapes and sizes, they all do the same thing. (Mauricio Fugacious) A water tower is simply a large, elevated tank of water. The water tower in Clint is about 165 feet tall and holds about 1million gallons of water. For more information on the Clint water tower and how it works I contacted Mauricio Fuentes a maintenance technician for El Pasos water utility services

F.FWhy are water towers so high of the ground?

M.FWater towers are tall to provide pressure. Each foot of height provides 0.4 PSI of pressure. The Clint municipal water supply runs at between 50 and 100 PSI. The water tower must be tall enough to supply that level of pressure to all the houses and businesses in the area of the tower.

F.FHow big is the tank of the tower?

M.FA water towers tank is normally quite large. A normal in ground swimming pool in someones backyard might gold something like 0,000 or 0,000 gallons, and a typical water tower might hold 50 times that amount!

F.FHow much of that water is used everyday?

M.FA water towers tank is sized to hold about a days worth of water for the community served by the tower.

F.FHow does the water circulate to each one of its destinations?

M.FThrough pumps located near the water tower and at the treatment plants.

F.FWhat happens if the pumps go down, lets say in a power failure or something like that?

M.F If the pumps fail the water tower holds enough water to keep things flowing for about a day.

F.FWhat are the advantages of a water tower.

M.FOne of the big advantages of a water tower are that it lets a municipality size its pumps for average rather than peak demand. This saves a community a lot of money.

F.Fwhere does the water that is in the tower come from?

M.FWell some come from the Rio Grande and In Clint I think some of it comes from a well.

F.FWhere is the water treated?

M.FIt is treated at the Robertson-Umbenhauer Water Treatment Plant on

800 Canal St.

With the help of Mr. Fuentes we were able to learn all about how the Clint water tower works, what purpose it serves and why it is such a necessary part of this community and so many others. I guess that answers one of my questions. I still would like to know why the water tower seems to give this community such a sense of pride and devotion to the town, lets find out.

The Water Tower And The Community

Could it be that its the only way to spot the town of Clint from more than a mile a way. Or is it simply that the words Clint although faded but still visible on the top of the tank make us feel honored to live in such a "friendly" town. If you were to ask me I would disagree but many of this towns veterans seem to think that Clint is the place to be. Thats probably why they have spent almost their whole lives here. When you ask anyone to tell you one object that reminds him or her of most of Clint they will probably tell you the water tower. Well that or the Quick n Eze but thats a different story. Any way lets find out whats so mysterious about the notorious Clint Water Tower.

To do this I went to the only people I knew who had ever climbed the tower or so they say they did. Chris and Michael Franco

F.FWhen did you climb the tower?

C.FSummer of 7 my eighth grade year

F.FWhat made you do such a thing?

C.FI wanted to go down in "C-Town" history plus there was nothing else to do that night.

F.FAny proof of climbing the tower.

C.FIf you look closely at the side of the tower facing the high school we tagged an X in black paint on the tank.

F.FWhat was the best part about climbing the tower.

C.FThe bragging rights and the rush I got while doing it.

Now that I had heard about what it means to actually climb the tower I had to do it for myself.

The Future

How long will the water tower be a part of the Clint community? Most say forever but there are those who think of it as an eyesore and when the water stops flowing through the tower what will become of it. With technology changing our lives everyday it is assumed that the water tower will be no exception. The only question now is will it stay as a monument to this town or will it be torn down like water towers of old. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Personally I think it is a beautiful sight plus its a lot nicer than Fabens tower.

The Climb

We didnt set a time or date to actually climb the tower but we knew it was going to go down. At about 0 On Thursday December 1th 00 Tony Alvarado a fellow student called me and said if I was ready to do it that night. I told him that I was "down" and he said he was going to call me at 110 so we could do it around 100. When he called I woke up and he arrived at my house around 1145 and knocked on my window. I snuck out of the house and we walked a short distance to the tower, taking a few pictures of the tower along the way. Equipped with a rope and hope we scoped out the area and decided to leave the ropes behind because it would take too long to climb it with them.

What we were about to do was very risky due to the fact that the town police station was directly under the tower. Which I must mention was not their when Chris and Michael Franco scaled the tower. We noticed that the police cars were gone and we decided to do it. Tony said "whose gonna go first" I quickly replied "you". He ran and jumped onto the ladder I was not too far behind. As we were about half way up I caught up to Tony because he was getting tired. It was then that we spotted a sheriffs car of in the distance. We froze and hoped that he would not spot us luckily he did not he simply slowed down and we watched him drive of into the distance. It was then that I heard a voice saying, "are they climbing it". It was at that point that I began to get scared because it would not be the first time I had been caught by the police. The people who were down their were the jr. highs security guards. As one went running to in my opinion to call someone we continued our accent.

When we approached the final steps the sound of our feet hitting the ladder woke the pigeons which were nesting atop the tank base. There were even a few dead ones in which we had to maneuver around. Tony said that there was a bar blocking us so I shouted, "lets go down" in fear of getting caught. Just as I told him this he was able to somehow open the lock. He proceeded to the base of the tank and I followed but did not stand completely atop the tank base. I simply sat down on it and looked down at the security guard saying, "get down here" and I did just that. I shouted to Tony lets go as he turned to take a picture of me. He was slow to come down because he was taking pictures so I was forced to either leave him up there or go speak to the security guard. So I spoke to the security guard and gave him false names and information as I waited for Tony to get down. As I left the security guards side and went to talk to Tony I ignored the security guards yells to go back and asked Tony if he wanted to run. So we did as the security guard said we could do this the easy or hard way. His voice faded and I knew exactly where to run seeing as how that was my neighborhood n all.

We ran for a while and finally arrived at a friends house. Exhausted we entered the back door and found our friend lying on the floor of her living room. We told her what we had done and then waited a while to make sure the coast was clear. Even though I dont live more than a block away from her she took us home to be sure we didnt get caught. As I quietly went back into my house Tony went to his I tried to go to sleep. I could not stop thinking about what we had just done and hoping that we would not get caught.

Well their you have it I no longer have any questions about the ill-famed Clint water tower. I have found out how it works, why its so important to the community, and best of all how it feels to actually climb the thing. It was an experience I will never forget and will be able to tell my friends and children when IM older. So whenever I come back to this town (Hopefully IM not living here) I will look at the tower and remember all the good times I had in this town.

What is ambition? Ambition is a passionate desire for rank, fame, power, or to achieve a particular end. Like any other personality traits, ambition, has its positive and negative flip side to them. Positively, ambition is what keeps most of us going on with life, to have the urge to succeed and not to restrict ourselves by physical or mental territory. Positive ambition seeks beneficial goals. Without the ambition in one, life could possibly be very dull and nothing could be accomplished. Those with ambition are the ones that we look up to in our everyday lives. Those whom we look up to are our leaders, educators, heroes, and our inventors. President George Bush is an example of the positive ambition because he is our leader and he has set goals to improve the nation in every aspect. Teachers, professors and many other educators hope to pass on their knowledge on to the younger generations. As for the inventors their positive ambitions are to improve everyday living, whether it is simplify way of living or to live longer. The positive side of ambition consists of motivation for the achievement to head towards the particular ending.

Nonetheless, ambitions can lead to a constant of striving without achieving, or having an empty pursuit which provides with no resolution. Greed and jealousy also incorporates into the negative ambition because if one desires power, one may also lead up to the greed in desiring even more power. In Shakespeares Julius Caesar, the flip side of ambition is shown in the crucial speeches made by Anthony and Brutus, after Brutus assassinated Julius Caesar. Both the greed and jealousy were in Brutus blood because he opposes the ascension of any single man to the position of dictator, and he fears that Caesar aspires to such power. In the two crucial speeches, Anthony and Brutus explain to the crowd of citizens as for the reason of the assassination of Julius Caesar. Brutus tells the crowd that Caesar was an ambitious man. Caesar was hypothetically negatively ambitious because he had no set goals, therefore, he will not have any directions in the future. Without a doubt, both men tried to lure the crowd to their point of view and to call their opponents the traitor of Julius Caesar. Negative ambitions pursue success and pleasure with a self-centered motivation. When Caesar was assassinated, Brutus has shown that once one decides to use violence to further ones quest for power, the desire gradually grows to a point where it is difficult to stop.

Since the beginning of time, man has been fascinated with the universe outside of our own planet. A natural urge to explore the extraterrestrial has always engulfed the human spirit. From the early ages of society, man has been particularly intrigued by Mars. The Egyptians referred to it as "the Red One," and the early Babylonians called it the "Star of Death." With modern technology constantly advancing, it has become possible to not only wonder about the marvels of our universe, such as Mars, but it has become possible for man to visit and explore these wonders. The only question remaining is, "Is it worth the time, money, human labor, and much more that would go into a manned mission to Mars?"

Many people hold the answer to this question as an obvious yes, and also believe that we must do this for the sake of mankind. These people, however, are saying this out of ignorance to the facts and due to their primitive exploratory instinct. It is clear to see that they have not taken into consideration all the aspects and components which would go into a manned mission to Mars. It is true that we could gain much from a manned mission, but what we could gain is little more than "bragging rights" in saying that humans landed on Mars. The actual knowledge and human experience which could be gained from a manned mission to Mars is far outweighed by the costs, potential problems associated with the mission, and health risks to the astronauts. Thus, at the current time, humans should not be sent to explore the "Red Planet."

Mans history of actually placing foot on an extraterrestrial body is very limited. Space shuttle Apollo 11, carrying Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, which was the first manned flight to ever land on the moon set down July 0, 16. Since their exploration, only ten other men have ever walked on the moons surface. (Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Moon). These missions have opened new doors for mankind which were previously inaccessible. Moon missions last just over five days, whereas a mission to Mars would last a considerably longer time. Physicists have proved that the shortest possible journey to Mars would last around twenty-one months, nine months each way, and a three month stay on the surface to compensate for the orbit of Mars around the sun in contrast to that of Earth. (Odenwald).

The duration of this mission brings many factors into consideration. First, the cost of the mission would be extreme, and would take money away from important uses on Earth. The initial journey of man to the moon cost NASA close to $5 billion. There is a vast array of estimates ranging anywhere between $0 billion and $1 trillion for the round-trip manned mission to Mars. However, the least expensive of these ways are undoubtedly to be ruled out by NASA, for they involve un-testable, un-guarenteeable, and potentially dangerous ways of travel; these include harvesting fuel from Mars along with other illogical solutions. (Should We Send Men to Mars?) The most recent comprehensive estimate of a manned trip to Mars, a journey taking more than 15 times as long as a mission to the moon to complete, is in the range of $500 billion. (Human Exploration of Mars).Custom writing service can write essays on Men to Mars: Misplaced Priorities

The $500 billion would not all be raised in one year, but rather would be raised over a period of ten years by slight tax increases to the public. Donations would aid to the goal, but would not nearly come close to being entirely sufficient to fund the mission. This is where many questions arise. Would it not be more logical and infinitely more beneficial to mankind if these funds rather than going to an unneeded manned mission to Mars went instead to assist in problems here on Earth? Programs such as Welfare, Social Security, Medicare, and many other financial aids could benefit tremendously from this raise in taxes, should it be issued at all. These issues of securing and protecting the American people are much more important than space travel which would effect far fewer people. Moreover, the pathfinder missions to Mars cost only $ billion to complete and these could be replicated and improved for a cost which is not substantially greater if we need to send anything to Mars. (Should We Send Men to Mars?). Sending probes to Mars as we have done is much more cost effective in the sense that when men are walking on Mars, they are confined to their space suit. This takes away their ability to feel, smell, taste, and hear, and the only other humanly sense left is sight which we can just as efficiently accomplish by means of a robot.

Continuing, there are hundreds upon thousands of potential mechanical problems which could arise and be unfixable in the course of the nearly two-year mission. Human error is always a potential risk when parts and instruments of the shuttle must be designed, measured, and sometimes manufactured by humans. On January 8, 186, Space Shuttle Challenger exploded killing all its members 7 seconds after takeoff. This was, of course, not planned nor expected, and despite many technological advances since this, it is still impossible to predict any catastrophic events like this. (The Crew of the Challenger Shuttle Mission in 186). Along these lines, no manned mission has ever been launched for such a great duration of time. Thus, we are unaware, and can not simulate on Earth the potential effects of a two year trip. Any trip into outer space leaves very little room for human error, but on a mission, the first of its kind, lasting twenty-one months, the margin for error is even less as the chance of error is exponentially greater.

As with all ventures to previously unexplored places, there is also the constant risk of the unknown. NASA can attempt to account for every possible scenario, but there may be unknown effects to the men and machinery once they land on the Martian surface. There are potential effects of space radiation and other dangers, which we may be ignorant to. There will also be neither repair facilities nor specialists on board, and if something is to go wrong, it may be impossible with the available equipment to repair damage to the shuttle. (The Crew for the Manned Mission).

The absence of repair facilities, and the potential mechanical problems is a much more serious threat the threat posed to the health of the astronauts who command this mission. Without medical facilities on board, there would be no way to treat bleeding ulcers, heart attacks, broken bones, and any other medical problem which may occur. Dr. Arnauld Nicogossian confirms, You cannot do telemedicine like we do, or abort (the mission), on the way to Mars, (Space doctors say Whoa to sending people to Mars). These conditions which could be treated on Earth may be fatal without a chance of resuscitation in orbit.

Space radiation is also another fact to be considered when accounting for potential medical dangers in this mission. It is unknown whether space radiation could cause cancer or not in the astronauts, but it is a likely possibility. Nicogossian, NASAs top doctor, is still worried and uncertain to the effects of radiation, and while there is uncertainty, there should not even be a consideration to sending men who could be harmed by unknown causes. Furthermore, Dr. Jerry Linenger questions whether or not astronauts will be fit to walk on Mars when they arrive, let alone be healthy when they return to Earth. Many men who enter space skip or slack on their workouts. This was once thought to be the cause of bone deterioration upon return to Earth, however, new studies show that even those who constantly work out while in orbit lose nearly as much bone mass as those who skip workouts, and they are in a very weakened condition upon their arrival home. (Space doctors say Whoa to sending people to Mars).

Ultimately, there are many concerns associated with a manned mission to explore Mars which cannot be ignored. There are extreme costs; money will be spent which could be put to better use for causes right here on Earth. There are also potential mechanical problems which have affected missions in the past and could possibly negatively impact a mission to Mars. Losses from this of not only money but also human life could be great. Finally, the health risks to the astronauts are great and some dangers are presently unknown. And, until these issues can be resolved, humans should not be sent to explore Mars.

A fronting company is a licensed insurance company that issues an insurance policy and reinsures the risk of loss back to the captive insurer owned by the insured. This allows the insured to benefit from both having a captive insurer and being able to obey regulations that mandate the insurance company that is issuing the policy to be licensed. Furthermore, this licensed insurance company allows the insured to work with other parties that require their insurance company to be rated, whereas this would not be the case in a pure captive situation. However, the market for providing fronting services is becoming dramatically smaller and insurance companies are becoming more tentative to enter into these agreements.

Despite the fact that the use of captives as a risk financing technique is growing at a rapid pace, insurance companies do not seem to have the financial and underwriting resources to provide fronting services. This could possibly be due to the fact that there are fewer insurance companies in the market compared to the past and they have an unwillingness to take on a fronting position while seeing other companies fail, like Frontier and Legion. Despite these "notorious demises," the author argues that insurance companies could make a profit from fronting if they become better secure and paid more attention to the finer details of the reinsurance agreement.

The author forms a very good point that an important consideration an insurance company must make when entering into a fronting situation is to look at the nature of risk of the potential insured and the character, capacity, and capital of the captive owner. Furthermore, to better protect against having to pay for losses because the captive is unable to do so, the insurance company should increase their requirement for liquid cash and cash equivalents as necessary obligations in order to create the policy. On the other side of the picture, insurance companies should also evaluate the motives a company has for forming a captive to make sure that they are doing it for the right reason and that the managers understand how the cash will be handled.

Overall, an insurance company could make money by acting as a fronting company if they took the proper precautions before entering into an agreement. They should not shy away from this opportunity because some companies have failed in the past, but rather look for ways to improve upon their wrongdoings. Basically, if security and management are acceptable and watched then solvency issues can be mitigated, if not eliminated.

Most people take many things around them for granted. They get up in the morning, turn on the light, open their can of peaches then eat the peaches with a spoon. The light goes on magically, the peaches are still fresh in their can to no surprise and it takes little to no effort to lift the light spoon to the mouth. All these things happen or are there thanks to Aluminium. Amazingly enough, aluminium does not magically appear and to be produced lots of raw materials, chemical reactions, money and time are needed.

The process in which aluminium is made involves three complex steps; the mining of bauxite, the refining of aluminia and the smeltering of aluminium.

The first step, mining Bauxite, is planned five years in advance so the areas that are to be mined can be developed. Once mined the Bauxite has to be processed before being shipped to the refineries. In a beneficication plant, fine particles are removed from the Bauxite by screening and washing it. It is then placed on stockpiles before being shipped away.

In the second step aluminium oxide, which is Alumina, is removed from the Bauxite using the Bayer Refining Process. Firstly the bauxite is ground up into fine particles and is mixed with hot, caustic soda (NaOH) solution to dissolve the alumina and some forms of silica. Not dissolved in this process are other elements such as silica, iron and titanium. These are then filtered off.

Order custom research paper on Aluminium Smeltering

The alumina and caustic soda solution is then put into rows of thickener tanks. In the tanks a fine red mud sinks to the bottom as well as the silica, iron and titanium. Remaining alumina trihydrate is then filtered to clean it even more. The solution is then cooled, concentrated and stirred in open top tanks until pure alumina tyhydrate crystals form. To speed up the process pure alumina is added to the mixture to act as a growth site for the crystals. This process can take several days. The alumina trihydrate crystals are then washed and filtered before being heated to 1100 C in kilns, to remove the water molecules. A fine dry powder, alumina is formed, which is then cooled down and stored.

The third step in the process of manufacturing aluminium is smeltering, which is the part of the process, which is done at Tiwai Point in New Zealand at the Comalco Smelter.

To produce aluminium the Aluminium and Oxygen in the Alumina need to be separated. For this reaction to take place the alumina is put into a large, steel furnace, lined with carbon (cathode). These furnaces are known as reduction cells. In the cells the alumina is dissolved in molten cryolite, (NaAl ), which also conducts electricity at approximately 70 C. Electricity is then put into the cells through anodes which are carbon blocks made by smelters. An electric current of about 170 000 amperes is passed through all the cells and the temperature stays at nearly 1000 C. The current flows from the anode, through the alumina/cryolite mixture, the cathode lining and to the anodes in the next cell. The current causes the carbon anode to react with the alumina, forming aluminium and carbon dioxide. The aluminium sinks to the bottom of the cell and sticks to the carbon cathode. It is then siphoned out in a process called tapping and then put in holding furnaces to be cast into products such as pure aluminium or into aluminium alloys.

CROSS SECTION OF POT OF ELECTRIC FURNACE

The diagram below shows a cross section of one of the reduction cells.

It is evident that this process requires many raw materials, which are obtained from many different places from all over the world.

The raw materials required to produce the alumina are Bauxite, Caustic soda, lime, water and electricity. Bauxite, which is ore formed from weathered sedimentary rocks, which contain a large percentage of minerals containing aluminium. The Bauxite is mined in Weipa, on the Cape York Peninsula, Northern Queensland. Here the Bauxite is small, red pebbles or piscolites, approximately 5mm in diameter.

The caustic soda, which is used in the Bayer Process is obtained from the United States, the Middle East and Asia and the electricity, coal, lime and water are found locally. In the refining of the alumina and smeltering of aluminium the raw materials needed are Alumina, Alaska crude oil, coke, pitch cryolite and electricity. The pure Alumina is obtained from Queensland. The crude oil from America and Coal from China and Korea are used to make the coke and pitch required to make the anodes. The Cryolite used to dissolve the alumina is synthetically produces and electricity used for the reduction of alumina to Al is sourced from Lake Manapouri in Fiordland.

During the process a number of chemical reactions take place to transform the raw materials into other things such as Alumina then aluminium.

The key chemical reactions that take place are the dissolving of crushed bauxite in caustic soda, the filtering of Al(OH) then the decomposition . Also the two parallel reactions in which Aluminium is formed.

The filtering of the iron oxide, titania and silica are filtered off using the equations

·Al O + 6NaOH + H O - Na Al(OH)and

·SiO + 4NaOH - Na SiO4 + H O

The insoluble Fe O is insoluble and is filtered out.

Na Al(OH) decomposes into Al(OH) over time which is insoluble and is filtered out.

·Na Al(OH) + H O - NaOH + Al(OH) H O

Decomposed under extreme temperatures to produce alumina.

·Al(OH) HO - Al O + H O

Aluminium is produced using these two parallel reactions.

·Al O + C - Al + CO

·Al O + C - 4Al +CO

The process in which aluminium is made is the same in smelters around the world, although the scrubbing system, which is used at the New Zealand smelter, is currently the best one in the world.

Various waste materials are also produced during the process and they are dealt with in different ways.

In the second step of the process of manufacturing aluminium, during clarification, a red mud is formed which is a waste product. It is washed with water then put into ponds called tailings dams. Also in the process of smeltering the aluminium, carbon anodes, which are used, are recycled by being reformed and used again. Offgasses from the reduction step are cleaned to remove contaminants and are then released into the atmosphere. Primary aluminium, itself, is also recycled by being melted down and forming new products.

Aluminium is a very light and durable metal, which is a very good conductor of heat and electricity. It is easily shaped through moulding and extruding. Its main advantages are that compared with other metals it has a low density and it forms an oxide layer, which prevents it from reacting with oxygen in the air so a surface protection coating is not necessary. Therefore because of its many beneficial characteristics, aluminium is used for many things including uses in the transport, construction, packaging and electrical industries. Aluminium is used in the transport industry because of its lightness, which enables more metal to be used. In the packaging industry it is used for cans and tops, foil, drink cartons and as packaging for pharmaceuticals. It is used for electrical conductors, heat exchangers and cooking utensils as well as roofing and wall cladding. . Aluminium is also made into alloys, which improve its properties. Many alloys are lighter and corrosion resistant.

The aluminium, which is produced at the smelter, is a very economical and environmentally friendly product. It is easily recycled, by being melted and casted into new products, without loosing any of its properties, which means it is very economical. The recycled or secondary aluminium only uses five per cent of the energy used to produce the primary aluminium from Bauxite. Alumimium cans are one of the most important products made by secondary aluminium. Also because of aluminiums light, strong and pliable characteristics it is easily transported and requires less energy to manufacture it into products. This means significant energy cost savings for the industry. When costs of production decrease, supply increases (a little economic theory) and therefore more aluminium products are produced. Another environmental benefit is that lighter cars can be produced from aluminium, which consume less fuel and put out less pollution into the atmosphere.

To produce aluminium a lot people, time, money, raw materials and equipment are needed. In 17 the Tiwai smelter produced approximately 08,000 tonnes of aluminium. The smelter gets shipped over 750,000 tonnes of raw materials to a special wharf opposite Bluff Harbour. More than 700 megawatts of electricity is used at the smelter, which is 5% of New Zealands total generating capacity. There are 00 employees working at the smelter. 660 reduction cells are continuously operating with some 48 cells using technology. The technology is the most efficient in the world.

From all the information above it is clear that aluminium is made in a very complex process involving many peoples̢۪ time and the efficiency of machinery.

Next time you get up in the morning, turn on your light and eat your can of peaches, remember that the electricity for your light is passing through aluminium wires, your peaches are sitting in one of the most important aluminium products and your spoon is probably light thanks to an alloy of aluminium.

I recently attended the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers national conference in Washington DC. I had a great time seeing all of my friends, who like me, seem to be getting older. At the conference I remember talking to a younger person and I noticed that I kept repeating the same thing to him over and over again. The reason I was repeating myself was that he wasnt getting what I was trying to tell him. In exasperation I finally said to him Listen, I hate to sound like a broken record but... he looked at me with a puzzled look and said, Whats a broken record?

Im skilled at communication. I watch body language; I look for hidden meaning in the message and all of the stuff that communication experts suggest you do. Why then wasnt I effectively communicating? After several minutes of just looking at him, I realized that this person grew up listening to CDs and had no idea what a broken record sounded like or why I used that phase to make a point. This person was probably a college freshman who, by my calculations, was born somewhere around 181.

Todays college freshmen share a perspective of the world thats much different from the perspective many of us more mature (older) individuals have. The same is true for todays graduating seniors many who are entering the workforce for the first time. They have a different point of view than most of the managers and supervisors charged with overseeing their work. How different is that point of view or perspective? And how does it complicate communications in the workplace?Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Managers Qualities

According to a list making the rounds on the Internet, people who started college last fall feel the same way about Kennedys assassination as Lincolns. Youve probably have seen it. The list originated at Beloit College in Wisconsin by a group of college professors who compared notes on the incoming freshman class. Says Ron Nief, director of public affairs, Id refer to Walter Cronkite, and the kids looked at me like they didnt know who I was talking about. This prompted Nief and his colleagues to put together a list that puts things into perspective. Heres a short sampling of this years list

The People who started college last fall across the nation were born in 181.

•They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan era and probably did not know he had ever been shot.

•There has only been one Pope (and the Pope has always been Polish!)

•They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and dont even remember the Cold War.

•They have never feared nuclear war.

•They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

•Tianamen Square means nothing to them.

•Their lifetime has always included Aids.

•Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

•They have never owned a record player.

•They have always had an answering machine.

•They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

•They have always had cable.

•Jay Leno Has always been on the Tonight Show.

•The Vietnam War is an ancient history to them as WWI, WWII and the Civil War.

•They dont have a clue how to use a typewriter.

All though the list was compiled for fun I believe it can be used as tool to help us better understand the significance of ones Frame of Reference. Our experience with the world provides us with a unique perspective causing us to see certain things in given situations. People who work in organizations can probably site the frequent occurrence of misunderstandings in the workplace. Different parties interpret the same facts quite differently such that each comes to a different conclusion.

You cant live your life without adding meaning or drawing conclusions. It would be an inefficient tedious way to live but, you can improve your communications by

1.Becoming more aware of how your frame of reference influences your thinking and reasoning.

.Making your thinking and reasoning more visible to others.

.Inquiring into others thinking and reasoning with an open mind.

Hey, I have an idea. Someone should compile a list for us older folks. Ill start. Do you know what LSMFT stands for? If you answered yes, do you feel OLD YET?

Josephine Alibrandis major change in perspective occurred when she discovered her Grandmothers past life. She discerns numerous things regarding her Nonna, counting how she came to Australia, her association with her husband and that with Marcus Sandford. Initially in the text, Josephine was oblivious to these truths concerning her grandma. However as the flower unfurls, she progressively unearths her Grandmothers past.

The composer creates pauses during the dialogue involving Josephine and her Grandma. These gaps in time permit the responder to pierce Josies mind and comprehend her findings concerning her Grandmother. Throughout one of these discussions with her Grandmother, Josie discovers how many difficulties migrants in Australia faced.

Katia informs Josie on how difficult it was for her living in an unfamiliar country with no one to converse with. Additionally she mentions her stumbles with adversity such as snakes. She revealed to Josie, You do not know how much I hated Australia for the first year. No friends. No people who spoke the same language as me.. they were not the good old days, Jozzie.

Through the unearthing of her Grandmothers history Josie subsequently understands how fortunate she is to be alive in the time that she is. Despite her own tribulations due to her culture, Josephine comprehends that these are zilch in contrast to the isolation and insecurity that Katia would have sensed. She mentions, I just sat there, glad that I live in these times.. I dont think I could ever handle the quiet world she lived in. Further in the text she informs the audience that she believes her grandma to be one of the two strongest women she ever knew.

In all probability the most significant change of perspective in Josephine Alibrandi is her attitude towards her own multiculturalism. This is evident in the opening scene of the text. Josephine rejects the traditional Italian record playing and switches it to one of popular culture. Her insecurity and aggravation in being half Italian and half Australian is show due to two factors, because of the relationship between her Nonna and Marcus Sandford, then the liaison between her mother and Michael Andretti. Josephine articulates her craving to be either one or the other culture when she admits, Now all I want to be is an insignificant Italian in a normal Italian family."

During the conclusion of the text nevertheless, Josephine deals with her frustration and confusion, as she learns vital lessons. She understands that her whole family are two cultures, both Australian and Italian. She comprehends that it will never be possible to completely break away from her Italian heritage, simply because like religion, culture is nailed into you so deep you cant escape it. She mentions. In addition she discerns that they have assimilated in well as Italians in Australia, dissimilar to numerous other nationalities. In the text she announces, A different Australia emerged in the 150s. A multicultural one, and thirty years on were still trying to fit in as ethnics and were still trying to fit the ethnics in as Australians. I think my family has come a long way. Near the end of the text Josephine voices her assumptions and convictions concerning her identity. She states Im not sure whether everyone in this country will ever understand multiculturalism... But the important thing is that I know where my place in life is…If someone comes up and asks me what nationality I am, Ill look at them and say that Im an Australian with Italian blood flowing rapidly through my veins. Ill say that with pride..

Should outside nations or the UN become involved in civil wars or should people be left to do their own fighting?

Civil War has great repercussions, some more obvious than others. The time old saying "let them fight it out amongst themselves" has been exhausted, due to the inability of humankind to blatantly ignore the Social & Economic costs of civil conflict. Civil War creates many adverse consequences, of which are suffered not only by the active combatants but also by civilians. Many of these consequences accumulate long after the war is over. This essay shall discuss the adverse economic & social consequences of Civil War, the repercussions that may occur without the involvement of United Nations and outside nations, and lastly the effects Civil War has had on a handful countries (both socially & economically).

Firstly, Civil war is an economic catastrophe for the country at conflict. During a civil war a society diverts some of its resources from productive activities such as food production to destruction (fighting the war). With the shift in resource production focused on destruction, it creates a subsequent loss. The first loss is governments increase their military expenditure and this directly reduces economic growth. During civil war governments spend almost double their GDP on the military resources. This is likely to cause a decrease in other public expenditures such as infrastructure and health.

The main economic losses from civil war arise from the direct destruction of infrastructure. During the war rebel forces, target physical infrastructure as a part of their strategy. The main targets are the enemys communication and support lines, such as telecommunications, airports, ports, roads and bridges. In addition to this strategic destruction of key infrastructure, rebels and government soldiers loot and destroy housing, schools and health facilities. Where possible the United Nations intervenes before a conflict can escalate, to prevent destruction of infrastructure. Cheap custom writing service can write essays on UN roles in the wrold

But occasionally it is hard to gauge the exact seriousness of a situation thus, delaying the initial deployment of UN Peace Keeping Missions.

An example is Mozambique. About 40% of immobile capital in the agricultural, communications and administrative sector was destroyed. The pre-war transport system had been a large foreign income earner as goods were transported from and to the neighboring states of Malawi, Zimbabwe, Swaziland and South Africa. When civil conflict arose in Mozambique this badly damaged the transportation of goods destroying a large sector of their economy (Elbe, 00). This occurred before UN intervened thus showing that, if United Nations were to have acted earlier maybe this economic damage may have been deterred.

Secondly, Civil War creates a very concerning social consequence. The direct human effects of civil war are fatalities and population displacements. The composition of these victims is drastically different in the modern civil war from the wars of the early twentieth century; the impact has shifted from military personnel to civilians. At the beginning of the 0th century about 0% of the victims were soldiers. By the 10s nearly 0% of the casualties resulting from armed conflict were civilian (Elbe, 00). The United Nations (& outside nations) recognizes the ramifications of not becoming involved in civil Wars mainly death and bloodshed.

Mortality rates only capture one element of the human consequences of conflict; however they are a useful outline of the crisis, its devastation and its impact. There is other human damage as a consequence of conflict such as depression and psychological effects, but mortality rates have been one of the most accurately measured indicators in war surroundings. As you would have thought, the mortality effect depends upon the duration of the conflict, consider a typical five-year war. During a civil war infant mortality increases by 1%( that is 1 in 1000 children under 5yrs old).

While it might be imagined that the rise in adult mortality is because of the greater exposure of adults to the risk of combat death, few of these adult deaths are directly combat-related deaths find that the most important cause of the indirect deaths of civil war are infectious diseases (Elbe, 00). Of these, malaria is the most significant fatal disease. The death of combatants is only a very minor component of the overall rise in mortality. These numbers confirm that civil wars kill far more civilians even after the conflict is over than the number of combatants that die during the conflict.

Furthermore, Civil War can also cause psychological problems trauma and depression being the main health issues that arise from conflict.

The case of Bosnia

It is estimated that the recent war in Bosnia and Herzegovina caused more than 50000 deaths, created more than million refugees and internally displaced persons, and wounded 00000 people in Bosnia and Herzegovina alone. Recent epidemiological studies have revealed that the psychiatric morbidity associated with mass violence in civilian and refugee populations is elevated when compared with non-traumatized communities. Clinical reports of Bosnian refugees in treatment show rates of depressive symptoms ranging from 145 to 1% and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms rates ranging from 18% to 5% (Mollica et al. 1). The United Nations intervention in this case created slow but effective infrastructure. The UN provided make shift homes for the displaced Bosnian people, allowing them temporary homes, which were overcrowded and lacking adequate waste facilities.

Thirdly, the aftermath of civil War is a major rebuilding phase. Civil wars reduce the efficient use of resources that are allocated to public health, and those reductions in efficiency extend into the post-civil war period. Additionally, often refugees and internally displaced people do not return to there original homes after the war ends (due to trauma faced or fear), but remain in makeshift camps for years. Therefore population is also exposed to conditions that increase the risk of infections in the post-conflict period.

Civil wars produce strong pressures to constrain the level of resources allocated to the public health care system in the aftermath of war. Leaders in post-civil war governments face multiple and pressing competing demands for public expenditure. Civil wars produce basic needs of economic reconstruction, rebuilding armed forces, judicial system & infrastructure.

Post civil War countries opt for stronger military expenditure rather than healthcare, which is undeniably reasonable, as they have just endured civil War. The drawback of that is, slower Post civil War recovery.

Without United Nations intervention Post civil war countries find it hard to restructure themselves efficiently and effectively, simply they need to be shown how they can best restore their country to a sustainable level.

Further more, the United Nations, when involved in the peacekeeping conflict endeavor to rebuild and reconstruct a reasonable standard of living (although temporary). This provides the post civil war country with the basis on which it can restructure itself politically, socially & economically.

In this way it is beneficial that the United Nations and outside nations when involved in conflict, or peacekeeping ensure that they recreate infrastructure for civilians to once again get on with their lives.

Lastly, United Nations intervention at times of civil war is crucial. It helps ensure peace and safety to the war torn country and allows some stability in what otherwise was or is an unstable environment. It helps begin the basic process of getting back on track infrastructure process and a means of life for civilians whom have been disadvantaged by civil conflict.

Example of East Timor. East Timor received independence from Indonesia in 001. East Timor already had poor or little infrastructure so when civil war occurred it just destroyed their basic infrastructure. The United Nations and outside countries including Australia helped with restoring of infrastructure to East Timor. The United Nations allows a period of 5-10 years stay dependant on stability of a country, during this time it will create infrastructure and educate the East Timorese into having the ability to create the own infrastructure.

However, in some cases where the UN has intervened in civil war, the basic healthcare and infrastructure provided is an inadequate environment for people whom are traumatized by war. Civilians who need psychiatric help often find make shift towns and their resources inadequate and too overcrowded to deal with their condition and as a result can pass the condition onto their children (generational trauma).

In summing up,

The United Nations and outside nations should have a role in civil wars, to protect civilians and restore infrastructure to war torn environment. The United Nations and outside nations should also ensure that civil unrest and conflicts are detected prior to the onset of social and economic instability, which are attributes of civil war. Concurrent involvement of the United Nations as a mediator may also prevent the causes of civil war, if people in a country can live as one and can have their own say, there may be a means of negotiation to resolve conflicts.

Gilgamesh Victory

"Dont listen to Humbabas plea!" Enkidu yelled at Gilgamesh. With his life on the line Humbaba plead for his life. Struggling in confusion, Gilgamesh did not know what he should do. Should he kill him or set him free; however if he set him free he will continue to kill others who enter the Cedar Forest. His heart was pounding fast like a herd of horses running through the battlefield. In his head, thinking to himself, " Should I let this poor creature go and return to his mother? Is this creature telling the truth or is he lying? Will he be my servant for life just like he said? My head is filled with many questions! What should I do?" While Gilgamesh was figuring out what to do, Enkidu broke his thoughts and yelled, " if you set him free, he will return to his mother and you will be the one who dies."

Gilgamesh decided to listen to his friends advice. Grabbing his axe, "the might of Heroism", from the ground and the sword from his belt he slashed the giant on the leg. Cracking his leg in two Humbaba then fell and crash to the ground. Screaming and yelling in pain, the giant try to fight back but he could not because the mighty wind stopped him from moving. His axe and sword was filled with the giants blood. The

blood was dripping down from his sword and axe like rain falling from the dark clouds. The ground is red like sunshine.

Gilgamesh eyes are filled with fire and fury. He could feel the courage to fight and kill the giant. Staring at the giants eye to eye, he then raises his axe up high over the giants head. Taking a deep breath and swinging with all his might, he hit the giants neck as fast as a lightnings strike. The axe cut the throat of the giant from left to right. Dropping down his axe and sword Gilgameshs was shock and surprise that the giant is still breathing. " With another strike he will die", Gilgamesh said to himself. Standing in front of the giant like a stone, Enkidu then slid along the ground like a ram making its final strike, on the wounded neck of Humbaba. Humbabas head snapped out of his body and roll along the ground. It stops at Gilgameshs bottom feet. Gilgamesh was in a trance. I could not believe what he had just done. However, he snapped back to reality and realized that he had just defeated the giant.

Gilgamesh and Enkidu have now killed the giant, who has been guarding the Cedar Forest of Lebanon. Gilgamesh has now made a name for himself. He will be remembered for what he has done to the invincible giant known as Humbaba. His name will be legend and will be passed on and talked about. The victory is now his for the taking.

Ethics

If you order your custom term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Ethics. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Specify your order details, state the exact number of pages required and our custom writing professionals will deliver the best quality Ethics paper right on time.

Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Ethics, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Ethics paper at affordable prices!

Ethics are the standards of right and wrong. They are the standards and values which influence our conduct and behavior. Ethics are sometimes called morals and the study of ethics is sometimes called moral philosophy. In the history of ethics there are three principal standards of conduct. These standards are happiness or pleasure; duty, virtue, or obligation; and perfection which is the most complete development of human potential. All people who have attempted to determine ethics have based their decision according to two chief principles. The first is that they think of something as right and the second is that the rest of society thinks of something as right. Therefore there is no real definition of what good ethics are; instead it is a personal choice. Your idea of good ethics may be entirely different from someone elses idea of good ethics. Ethics are an individuals personal value system and without them our society would be in chaos. (158)

The coming of Christianity marked a huge change in ethics, because it introduced a religious idea of what is good into our thoughts. In the view of a true Christian a person is completely dependent on God and cannot achieve righteousness through intelligence but only with the help of God. The main Christian ethical belief is "So whatever you wish that men would do to you, do so to them" - Matthew 71.

Work ethics is the desire to produce quality work and to give your best effort at everything that you do. Some qualities which determine good work ethics are integrity, reliability, perseverance, and the desire to succeed. Procrastination means putting off doing something because of habitual carelessness and laziness. Procrastination is one of the biggest signs of poor work ethics.

Good work ethics can be achieved by arriving on time and giving advance notice of absence if necessary, displaying loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness, dependability, reliability, initiative, self-discipline, and self-responsibility, respecting the rights of others; being a team worker and being cooperative, having appropriate clothing, grooming, hygiene and etiquette, demonstrating a positive attitude, being productive, having skills in personal management, time management, prioritizing, flexibility, stress management and the ability to deal with change, having appropriate verbal and nonverbal

skills, having leadership skills while maintaining appropriate relationships with supervisors and peers, and dealing appropriately with diversity and treating everyone with respect.

Work ethics affect every aspect of our lives whether we realize it or not. Work ethics or lack there of are the driving force for everything we do or dont do. Most people who have achieved success have achieved it through good work ethics. A perfect example of this would be multi-billionaire Bill Gates. Bill Gates started out building computers out of his garage. His financial status was no different then that of the average working class American. However Bill Gates triumphed over adversity and rose to be the richest man in the world. He wasnt born into his 40 billion dollars; he had to work for every penny of it. He showed incredibly good work ethics because he started his computer business very young and quickly shaped it into what it is now. Similarly most people arent born into an incredibly wealthy family but instead they have to work to build a life. In order to build a good life and have a secure future good work ethics are required. You can tell that you have good work ethics when you are working hard and achieving the goals that you have set for yourself. Conversely if you tend to procrastinate or if you lack productivity then it is apparent that you do not have good work ethics and you are not motivated.

Study ethics are similar to work ethics except they deal mainly with academics rather then all types of work. Study ethics are based on the same principles as work ethics such as attendance, attitude, productivity, organizational skills, cooperation, and respect. An example of good study ethics is not waiting until the last second to do your assignments, or doing your homework every night and showing up on time for class every day. Study ethics are being aware of what you have to do and then doing it rather than waiting and procrastinating.

From a students point of view study ethics are very important to succeed in school. Without study ethics a student cannot develop the skills he or she needs to eventually become a productive member of our society. Study ethics and work ethics go hand in hand for a student. If the student has poor work ethics then it likely that they lack study ethics as well. Benefits of good work and study ethics are success in any academic facility as well as success in attaining and maintaining employment. On the contrary consequences of having poor work and study

ethics are being unable to keep a steady job and struggling through school.

In the words of Vigil an early Roman poet "Persistent work triumphed" meaning, constant labor leads to your ultimate success and unless you have work ethic all of your dreams will remain nothing but dreams. However if you work hard and keep trying then one day your dreams will become your reality and you will achieve the success you have worked for. Similar to the quote by Virgil, Euripides once said "Great effort equals great results" Euripides. This quote means the more effort you put into a task the better the results are. So if you have good work ethics then you will put forward a consistently good effort and will achieve good results.

It can be said that idle hands are dangerous hands. This is evident in the quote "Work is the grand cure of all of the maladies and miseries that ever beset mankind" Thomas Carlyle. This quote means that if everyone in the world would do their fair share of work then the world would be a much better place and mankind as a species would be flourishing instead of killing each other in acts of greed and hatred. Similarly Albert Einstein said "Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labour in freedom." Albert Einstein. This quote means that if we can learn to work without being forced to do so then we will yield good results. It can also be said that "The secret of happiness is not in doing what one likes, but in liking what one has to do." - James M. Barrie. This means that true happiness doesnt come from getting your way all the time and doing whatever you want to do. Instead it comes from enjoying the work that you have to do, because you will get satisfaction from a job well done. If you only do what you want to do then it will eventually catch up with because you will have neglected to do the essentials.

It has been said that Work banishes those three great evils boredom, vice and poverty. Voltaire. This quote reiterates the point made earlier that idle hands can be dangerous hands. If you keep yourself busy with constructive activities then you will be conquering boredom because you will be busy doing something, vice because your mind will be focused on work rather than practicing evil, and poverty because you will be compensated for the work that youre doing.

We should always try and practice good work and study ethics because the work that we do is a reflection of ourselves. This point is demonstrated in the quote "Every mans work, whether it be literature, or music or pictures or architecture or anything else, is always a portrait of himself." - Samuel Butler. This quote shows us that in order to put forward a good image of ourselves we must give our best effort at everything that we do. In order to put forth a good image of ourselves we must put forward our best effort in everything we do. As Thomas Edison once said "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration." - Thomas Edison. This quote means that the only way to achieve greatness is through a great deal of work because inspiration means nothing if you dont have the work ethic to follow through with your plans. Personally I have many philosophies on both work and study ethics. Study ethics has helped to achieve what I consider academic success this semester. Last semester however was a different story. I was too easily distracted and therefore couldnt concentrate on my school work. When exam time came I really had to buckle down and go through countless hours of studying so that I could keep my average high enough. If I had better work and study ethics last semester then I would have made the principals list rather then the honors roll. In my opinion without good work and study ethics you cannot achieve anything. People may argue that athletes do not need good study ethics and they are successful, but this would not be entirely true because most athletes are drafted out of university and in order to get into university you must have good study ethics. Athletes also have good work ethics because it takes a tremendous amount of discipline to stay in good physical shape.

In conclusion work ethics and study ethics are essential to humans. Without ethics there would be chaos and everyone would be doing what they want to do. In other words there would be total anarchy without ethics. In order to maintain order in our lives and function as a society we have to fulfill our commitments as decent human beings and make positive contributions as individuals. In closing "Commitments are only as strong as the will to fulfill them" Pierre Trudeau
