Human Resources

Anet Reclusado works at the Human resources department at Signature Fruit (formerly Tri Valley Growers). They are a fruit processing plant. They used to also process tomatoes. They had the labels of S & W products and also Libby pumpkin products. Human resources take care of the employees of the company.

Anets title is Human Resource Manager,, but she wears many different hats, depending on the season. Signature Fruit is a cannery, so most of the employees work during the months of May, June through September, October depending on what their job is. During the "off-season" Anet is the jack of all trade, the plant manager, secretary and HR Manager. During the "season" she has a lot more help. They are called seasonal employees. Anet has been with the company for 17 years. When Anet first started working, Tri valley Growers (Signature Fruit) was one of the main companies to work for Modesto along with their competitor Del Monte ( but they dont mention that name). There are many employees who have been with the company over 0 years. One of the oldest employees is seventy-something years old.

Anet learned on the job and has a 4 year degree in Organizational Behavior. She feels that experience is the best teacher. She has worked as a seasonal worker in various positions.Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Human resources: job shadow

. She handles the recruitment and selection, performance evaluation, Compensation and benefits, training, retention and turnover, union grievances. Signature Fruit is part of the labor union so Annette has to deal with the union workers of the company. So in actuality human resources does most of the work at the company.

I arrived at Signature Fruit at 70. I waited while she attended a human resource meeting. Confidential information was being talk about, so I could not be there.

The first 0 minutes she answered her e-mail and voice mail. She scheduled business luncheons. She made the time cards for the next shift. There are shifts during the season. Time cards are made up daily, because they do not what jobs will be needed until the following day. This job is called "manning" Right now they are "off-season" so there is not as many people working. A couple of years ago they had about 11, 000 employees during the season. Now because of the closing of 7 of their processing plants of the company there is only about 4000 employees during the season.

She then prepared paperwork for re-registration, registration is when they see what employees are coming back to work the season. This took about 1 hour. There was medical questionnaire, W-4s,and a couple of other forms.

In the middle of all this, she had many phone calls regarding various things using terms I had no idea what it was concerning. She was always being interrupted for either a person walking in or the phone ringing. A 75 year old man walked in because he was injured at work, but he did not want to put in workers comp claim in, but by law, it is required or the company could in major trouble and the union would probably file a grievance on behalf of this man and it could cost the company a lot more money.

Overall it was a very busy day and Anet accomplished a lot of things in 4 hours. She said that I could come during the season and watch the fruit being processed. I thanked her and promised her lunch, She gave me a Signature Fruit T-shirt.

I am a complete animal lover and I dont believe that they should be hunted for sport. I feel the only circumstances in which an animal should be killed is if its sick or injured. I understand that hunting to some people is enjoyable, but I will never understand how one second watching a living, breathing animal grazing in the grass to the next second having the animal laying there in pain and dying is enjoyable.

Even though I personally dont agree with the legal hunting of animals, I do understand how it helps to play a part in population control and also a source of food supply. Allowing the animals to be hunted keeps them from overpopulating in our area. For example, if there was no hunting you may come out of your office building one day in NYC and you may see a deer with its head in the dumpster on the way to your car. I know its very unlikely, but if there was no population control, it could be possible.

Besides hunting the animals for population control, there are other possibilities to help keep the balance. Instead of killing the animals in a certain area, they could capture and relocate them to other areas of the world that are less populated. Laws could also be enforced that the only killing of animals be for food supply. Even though I am against killing animals, if they must be hunted, it should be for a good cause. Another idea (but very unrealistic) would be to spay/neuter a portion the animals if they seem to become too abundant. That could be done periodically to help control the population.

The Black Death

If you order your research paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on The Black Death. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. The Black Death was a disease that spread all over Europe. It was highly unpleasant and took only three or four days to kill you. Most importantly, it was the most contagious or wide spread disease of the time. The Black Death killed one third of Europes population between 147 and 151. Historians believe that there were two different plagues at this time. One of these plagues was called the Bubonic plague, this is when the fleas on the backs of rats which were infected with this disease jumped onto a person and infected the person. This disease did not spread as much in the cold and the other plague as the pneumonic plague which was extremely deadly.

The most common belief was that the plague had been sent by God and that it was his punishment for the sins people had committed. Another belief was that people thought the position of the planets caused the terrible disease. The actual reason why it was spread is because "fleas which had fed on the blood of a rat which had the disease. Plague bacteria spread inside the flea, building up a blockage in its digestive system. When the flea fed again, on a human, the blockage forced blood back in to the bite, along with the plague bacteria." This is what it says in The Great Plague Book. The first signs of illness were that the person with the plague would have a very high temperature, the person would start to be sick and the person would get pains in their muscles and buboes would start to appear which filled up with pus and became very painful

It explains this in The Medieval descriptions of the plague

"a) Apostumes and carbuncles on the armpits and the groin. From this, one died within a few days." Buy The Black Death term paper

"b) The emergence of certain tumours in the groin or armpits, some of which grew as large as a common apple. Black spots appeared on the arm and on the thigh."

The other plague was the pneumonic plague. The symptoms of this plague are the persons lungs get infected and they start to cough up blood and the person sprays germs every time they breathe out. It explains this in The Medieval descriptions of the plague.

"a) Continuous fever and spitting of blood. Men suffer in their lungs and breathing, and whoever has been corrupted cannot live beyond two or three days."

"b) Anyone who is infected by it dies, all who see him in his sickness follow thither." This explains that it is spread very easily.

70% of the people who caught the bubonic plague died, it was quite nasty and 0+% of the people who caught the pneumonic plague died so the pneumonic plague was an extremely deadly plague. The Black Death spread very quickly especially because of over sea trades to different countrys which made it spread quickly and easily. Rats got aboard ships and things to infect people there or to spread it by going out into that country. The Black Death spread across Europe because of mainly one thing POOR HYGEINE. The hygiene in those days was terrible. They did not have any medicine so they could not cure the people with the plague. People lived very close together. People, in those days, threw their waste out of the window, now how disgusting is that? They even had urine cups and once they had filled it to the top out of the window it went and that is the reason why the Black Death spread, because of extremely poor hygiene.

Desperate plague victims tried many different cures

Roasted onions filled with treacle and pepper made into a poultice,

Dried toads laid on buboes (comes from the bubonic plague) to draw out the poison and a mixture of onions, cloves, garlic, lemons and vinegar.

A recipe from that time says "To cure plague, take two handfuls and rue and sixty walnuts beaten small, then use as a poultice to draw out the poison." Another recipe was "To cure the plague, hold a live chicken against the plague sores until the bird dies.

Here is a paragraph from the book 'A Tudor Medicine Chest "If you saw dark swelling called 'buboes around the arm-pits, you knew you had the plague. Doctors pierced buboes with a long-handled cautery, to try to destroy the poison. The handle meant they didnt have to get too close to the highly infectious patient. Priests nervously gave holy water and wafers to dying victims with a dispenser which gad a long handle for the same purpose. A merchant staggers into the surgery and tears open his tunic. Pus-filled, purple boils cover his swollen armpits. Snatching a long-handled cautery from the medicine chest, the surgeon heats it in the fire. At arms length he presses the hot tip against a bubo which explodes with a hiss." This explains how people thought they could cure the person with the plague and how gruesome it was, what kind of tools they used to try and cure the plague and how scared people were of getting the plague. During the time of the Black Death, many people died. It says in The Contrasts and Connections History Book "158 So many people died that bodies were left unburied around the streets." In England, the population went right down during the time of the Black Death and it was very hard to get food because farmers would be dead as it says in The Contrasts and Connections History Book "The Black Death killed so many villeins that the Lord manor could not get enough people to live and work on his estates. Some villages were deserted. In other places many villeins stopped doing labour services for the lord and paid low rents instead. The villeins became free on their estates the lords had to employ labours on their estates and pay them high wages." Some people were starved to death and there were even rumours of cannibalism (People eating each other.)

One day a rabbit saw he was running very fast, and he found a turtle while he was running. The rabbit then told the turtle that if he wanted to race with him. The turtle saw he was very slow and he couldnft run but he accept. Later they started the race and the rabbit was very fast and every time he gain more and more distance from the turtle.@The rabbit saw he was very far from the turtle so he decide to@stop and rest on a tree but he got asleep. Time passed and passed and when he woke up the turtle had already won the race. This short story is some how related with the novel The Power of One and the phrase persistence and self trust brings success because it is about a little boy that had lots of dreams and was treated very bad at school. So that marked his mind and as he grew up he wanted to be a boxer and wanted to win the welter weight champion and beat Jaapie Botha a person he met at the beginning of the novel. Also the kid met several adults that became his friend and gave him lots of advices that he used later in life. In a clear demonstration of a skilled writer, Bryce Courtney in his novel gThe Power of Oneh manages to use characterization, symbols, and repetition; techniques that allow him to convey that persistence and self trust brings success.

CONCLUTION

It is clear that Bryce Courtneyfs gPower of Oneh theme is that persistence and self trust brings success, with the use of literary techniques such as characterization, symbols and repetition. The author is able to convey the reader about his theme. But not only in books but in real life Courtneyfs moral is used. We see sports men such as Juan Pablo Montoya who started being the worst pilot as a kid and by following this principal he is now one of the best F1 racers.@

Milk It Does A Body Good

Milk has been a part of life for as far back as people can remember. It has many positive characteristics that can be explained in many different situations. Lately, it has been advertised in a series of ads using the catch line "Got Milk?" In the magazines, ESPN The Magazine and Good Housekeeping, milk advertisers use these differences between men and women to help attract customers.

In Good Housekeeping, the milk advertisers focus on the common womens problem of osteoporosis to sell their product. They make their point stronger by showing three doctors being x-rayed. They use the phrase, "Prognosis Strong Bones." This easily catches the eyes of older women by focusing on one of the main problems that they face. By offering a solution to this problem, women will be easily attracted to the thought of drinking milk. Most older women will do most anything to help avoid osteoporosis. Milk advertisers also state that milk drinkers might also be able to avoid taking prescriptions if they drink more milk. Everyone knows that most women will do almost anything to save money. This offers another reason to drink more milk. Milk does a good job of focusing on womens issues to sell their product in a womens magazine.

On the other hand, ESPN the Magazine, focuses on younger boys in adolescence. They show a huge picture of a pro basketball player, Kevin Garnett. This player stands at six feet, nine inches tall. This article states, "you add about 15% of your height during your teens." This gives teens the thought of drinking milk in order to reach their athletic goals. If a teen drinks more milk and becomes taller, they will have a better chance of becoming a pro athlete due to their size. This offers a younger kid the chance to reach a dream. Younger kids will do almost anything to make these dreams come true. Milk does a good job of focusing on younger kids since they are the most gullible. The article also states, "…watch out for space shuttles and the occasional meteor." This offers these kids the thought that they might become abnormally tall, maybe even the size of a pro basketball player like Kevin Garnett. The article even shows Kevin Garnett surrounded by clouds. This may offer the thought to a teen that you will be sky high if you drink milk. The teens that look at this ad may believe that milk will help them to have a better life by giving them a better shot at their dreams.

Order Custom milk: it does a body good paper

Although both these articles use the same catch lines they focus on two totally different types of people. Milk advertisers do a good job at focusing on the types of people that would read these magazines. In ESPN the Magazine, they focus on younger sports fans that dream of making it to the big time. In Good Housekeeping, they focus on older women, maybe housewifes, who are getting older and will be soon facing, if not already, the problem of bone decay. They focus on health issues for the older women and dreams for growing teens. The milk advertisers prove the different positives of milk and its versatility. They use more text in the older womens article since they often, not only read more, but like to know more about products they are buying. For the teens, they show a gigantic picture of a pro athlete and offer them the chance to reach his standards. Both these ads conform to their readers interests to sell their products.

While going through high school, I never felt that anything I was learning was necessary for me to know. I didnt bother to pay attention in most of my classes, and my grades definately suffered because of this. I had always told myself that I would do better later, and that in the future I would do what I needed to in order to succeed. Honestly, Im surprised that I even graduated.

After i graduated, I still didnt want to do anything. I didnt even think that I would go to college. I would work two or three days a week and go out and party for the rest. My mind was stil ldtuck on doing everything in the future, not doing it now. Procrastination was my style of life. Not only is it a bad habit to get into, but also a difficult habit to get out of.

It wasnt until I realized that myself of the future that I had been depending on all this time was really me now that I stopped procrastinating and got my life together. When I came to this realization, I immediately got on the Internet and started looking for a college. I spent three weeks in search of the right one; I knew that I would work hard, and I needed to be challenged.

Now Im at that college being challenged and Im working very hard as I always knew I would. I havent missed any classes, and I have a 4.0 GPA. I plan to continue to work hard and finsh what I started. Even though no one else thought that I would succeed because of my laziness, I always knew that when I was ready, I would. I know that this is only the beginning of the journey. Maybe I should have started it sooner, but I also know that I will do my best and I will never go back to my old ways. Buy The Beginning of the Journey term paper

INTRODUCTION

It must be frustrating to be a teacher, because you see so many children with so much potential but they dont study or do their homework and instead of being a superior students they are nothing more than an average student.

It is frustrating being a mental health professional. You see so many patients who have the potential to live a normal life if they take their medication but for whatever reason they chose not to, and as a result their life is always in turmoil.

It must be frustrating to be a judge. You see the same people coming back to your bench time after time. You know that they have the potential to break this cycle but for whatever reason they dont.

Write your LIVING UP TO YOUR POTENTIAL research paper

The truth is that for everyone of us in this room today, there is some area of our life in which we are not living up to our potential. Unfortunately, for many of us it is in the spiritual area of our life. Many of us in this room have much more potential to life spiritually than we do.

In our passage of Scripture we will be studying today, the people were not living up to their spiritual potential and King Hezekiah challenged the people to rise to their spiritual potential. And I believe with all my heart that God today is issuing that same challenge to each on us, to his church, to live up to its spiritual potential.

READ CHRONICLES 01-

1.For me to live up to my spiritual potential, I will find God where I left Him.

Vs 6- ...People of Israel, return to the Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, that he may return to you who are left.

A. If you are not living up to your spiritual potential, you left God somewhere. Something has come into your life and you have put it before God.

B. When you lose something valuable like a watch or a gold ring, you try to remember where was the last place you saw it and you start your search right there. You go to that spot and you search.

C. When you realize that you are not living up to your spiritual potential, you go to the last place you felt God and you were close and you will find Him right there waiting for you. God does not move away from me, I chose to move away from Him.

D. When I am not living up to my spiritual potential it is not Gods fault, it is my fault. I have chosen to put something else ahead of Him. It may be my work, my family, or on Sunday morning the bed but I made the chose to replace Him with something else.

. For me to live up to my spiritual potential, I have to break those relationships that are spiritually harmful.

Vs.7 Do not be like your fathers , and brothers, who were unfaithful to the Lord, the God of their fathers, so that he made them an object of horror , as you see.

A. Pepper started working at Piccadilly Cafeteria last week. When she hired on she told them, I cant work on Sundays and if you want me, you will have to hire me on those terms. What she doing was entering into a relationship only if it wasnt going to be spiritually harmful to her.

B. But the truth be told, more often than not we make decisions every day without any thought of the spiritual consequences. When a Christian chooses to marry a non-Christian, they may be leaving their spiritual potential at the altar. When a Christian goes to an R- rated movie, they may be leaving their spiritual potential at the door of the movie house. When I chose to go to the gambling boat, I may be leaving my spiritual potential at the entrance door to the boat.

. For me to live up to my spiritual potential, I need to learn to do it Gods way rather than my own way.

Vs 8 Do not be stiff-necked; as your fathers were; submit to the Lord.

A. Have you ever had a stiff neck? You cannot turn your neck because it hurts so bad. In our passage, he uses stiff neck to refer to only being able to look at what you want, never being able to turn to see what God wants for you.

B. There are some who will spend their whole Christian life fighting with God about how things should be done in their life.

C. Im not sure what it is about us that makes us think that we know better than God what is the best for us.

D. If we could measure out our obedience and disobedience, we would find that we spend much more of our life in disobedience than obedience.

4. For me to live up to my spiritual potential, I need a little more humility and a little less pride.

Vs 8- Serve the Lord your God, , so that his fierce anger will turn away from you.

A. To serve someone requires humility. To want to be served requires pride. Unfortunately, today people come to church wanting to be served rather than serving. People come to church to drop off their children and wanting others to serve them by teaching their children the Word. People come to the worship service wanting to be served a portion of Scripture and go home and do nothing with it.

B. If you walked into this church today with pride in your heart, and you refused to humble yourself toward God, you are going to leave with no more spiritual potential than you came with.

5. If only I could live to my spiritual potential, oh, what a blessing I could be to others.

vs. - If you returned to the Lord, then your brothers and sisters will be shown compassion.

A. If prayers for others are going unanswered in this church, it tells me I am not living to my spiritual potential.

B. If I dont see people walking the aisle for salvation or recommitting their lives to God, it tells me I am not living up to my potential.

C. If I am living like I should, I will benefit but so will those around me.

In TV, magazines, and movies; images of women embracing or kissing can be seen on a regular basis. The media has a tendency to depict lesbianism as more socially accepted, thus setting a double standard for homosexuals. Its ok to see two women kissing, but if two men are seen doing the same people cringe in disgust. Is the acceptance of women showing affection to one another caused by the male fantasy of having two women at the same time, or do we accept it because it is normal for women to be affectionate.

A perfect example of the double standard is the TV show Will and Grace, which is about a gay man that lives with a straight woman. The shows suppose to be about the life of a gay male. When ever any romantic situation happens between Will and a partner is shown it gets covered up by a comic situation. Will also tends to be alone most of the season, and most dont see this as abnormal. So all we get from the show is a water down view of gay life. Most people would admit that it uncomfortable to watch men be affectionate with one another even in a normal heterosexual situation like, seeing an adult some and his father embrace each other for a long period of time. To see women hug for any length of time is considered very normal, and to see women make out is a theme in most pornography films.

Pornography could be one of the reasons lesbianism could be so readily acceptable. Men believe that women are affectionate to one another and its just hot to see them take it a step further. Men want to see girls get "bad" with one another. For men to show the same kind of affection is unnatural, and the men are less of a man.

In a world where getting ahead means less of what you know and more of what youve done, after school jobs can be increasingly beneficial. The popular myths that with a job there is no time for schoolwork or extracurricular activities are simply untrue. A teenager that has a job is apt to learn responsibility and money management, and also receive a head start on the "real world" after high school.

EXAMPLE[blank] is a junior; she has had jobs since she was 15. Her G.P.A has never dropped below ., and she has always been involved in at least three school activities.

One challenge that I have had to overcome, but ultimately grown stronger from is that of finding an appropriate time to finish my homework. I now take full advantage of free class time to work on my assignments while most of my non-working friends usually go home and sit on their sofa for four hours before opening their book bag. Maintaining a realistic work schedule also provides with me with out-of-school study time. (Responsibility in learning to properly budget time and create a workable realistic schedule; teaches discipline by spending available time to concentrate on schoolwork)

Having a job has also taught me to respect authority. Like most jobs available to high schoolers, I am working in the service industry so I constantly deal with people. After being yelled at for undercooked steak or smashed bread, it is much easier to deal with rude people in situations outside of work. I am less likely to lose my patience and I understand that many problems and attitudes depend on circumstance. (Manners and maturity taught and re-emphasized daily through constant interaction)Write my Essay on AFTER SCHOOL JOBS for me

I think another positive was that jobs impact teenagers are that it teaches money management. Nowadays, many teenagers do not understand the value of the dollar. I now think twice before spending $115 dollars on a pair of shoes when I realize that will cost me thirty hours of working. I also have a better idea of what money can buy and what things cost. I also look at taxes much different now; before I worked, I didnt understand what the concept of taxation. After watching my meager paycheck melt away more every week, I understand why sometimes the certainty of taxes seems like the more appealing option. (Valuable money management teaches the value of the $ with concepts that the teenager can understand)

After school jobs are great to prepare for life after high school. While I believe it is important to maintain healthy social life during high school, there are few colleges or jobs that will accept you just based on your extra-curricular activities alone. If you choose your job wisely, there is no reason while you cant stay active in school and work.

(Discipline to strike a balance between work versus reward; ability to discern the importance of extra-curricular activities and the sacrifice of some, not all, activities)

Jobs prepare you for the world after school. In life after high school, things must be planned weeks or even months in advance. If I need a job, I know how to apply; I know how to pass an interview; I know how to impress authority figures all skills I will need after I graduate. (Students obtain valuable work experience from having a job, something that cannot simply be learned in the classroom.)

As long as students show a little maturity, there is no reason why jobs cant benefit teenagers tremendously.

A hero is someone that you see as being higher than you are in strength, greatness, and confidence. My hero is not just one person, but many. A hero is not someone famous like a movie star or a football player, but someone that nobody really pays attention to. I think a hero has to be almost perfect in every way. They must be smart, courageous, strong, morally good, and have no flaws. In todays society, it is difficult to find people who meet these characteristics. What the world needs are a few more true heroes.

It is hard to be a true hero. To be so perfect that everyone looks up to you and strives to be just like you. But, I think anyone can be a hero, and that everyone may be a hero to someone. You may not realize it but there is probably someone looking up to you, hoping to be just like you someday.

Today, as in Beowulfs day, a hero is noble, brave, strong, morally good, and would probably die for their cause. Its not that we dont have heroes today. Our true heroes are in a way "disguised" and the "fake" ones are better known. What I mean is movie stars and professional athletes are very good at what they do but their not true heroes. If you think about it

most of them arent even heroes at all. Our true heroes are people like you and me. Their people who dont get attention because they dont want it. Their people who dont brag because they dont want to. Their people who just do good things from their heart. Buy cheap HERO term paper

They may not think of themselves as heroes or great, but to you they are. You see them as perfect through their bad times and good. You wish someday, somehow, if only for a minute, you could be as great as them. A true hero gives you something to live up to. But be careful of what you do and say because there could be someone out there who views you as a hero too.

Dont Have One Yet but planning on writing one. Heres one that you already have....The short story "Carnal Knowledge", by T. Coraghessan Boyle, is the story of one mans inner conflict between his lust for a beautiful activist, and his own convictions. Despite his lack of interest in Animal Rights issues, he finds himself embroiled in a steadily escalating fight for its cause. This struggle exists not because of any moral obligations, however, but to win the respect of his dear Alena, who personifies the saying Love me, love my cause. Because of the internal clash of interest, the story absolutely drips with irony. It is this irony that draws me to the story. Through this ironic conflict, the author defines the main character, moves the plot through its most significant actions, and develops the theme of the danger present in trying to share others ideals in order to gain acceptance. The main character, Jim, makes his opinion on the issue of Animal Rights known very early on. Beef, mutton, pork, venison, dripping burgers, and greasy ribs - it was all the same to me, food, the bodys fuel, something to savor a moment on the tongue before the digestive tract went to work on it. (4) However, he is willing to hide his convictions for the sake of a beautiful girl he meets on the beach, ironically, while being pissed on by her dog. His immediate thoughts of aggression towards the dog melt away, as he glances at its owner. I was on my feet now, murderous, glad to see that the thing was hobbled - it would simplify the task of running it down and beating it to death. (4) Alenas appearance stupefies him, and he is easily taken in by her easy grace. I was a little disconcerted at this point - I was the one whod been pissed on, after all - but my anger was gone. (4) In this encounter, we begin to see the truly transient nature of Jims emotions. This speaks volumes about the type of person he, and perhaps we all, are. As Alena becomes closer and closer to Jim, her cause becomes more and more ingrained upon him. Suddenly, protesting Animal Abuse becomes commonplace, and Guerilla Actions doesnt quite seem out of the question anymore. The fact that Jim doesnt half believe in the cause seems irrelevant, as he is just as incensed as the other protestors. "Alena slashed in the air with her limp mink, and the blood sang in my ears. Murderer! I screamed, getting into it. Torturer, Nazi! The strings in my neck grew very tight. I didnt know what I was saying,(47) The appearance of Rolfe, however, changes matters. While he is still naïve enough to participate in the Turkey raid, the cold wall of reality is fast approaching. The very next morning, Alena leaves for Wyoming, and Jim forlornly starts back for home, his activist pretensions shed. Were the plague on this planet, dont you know that? Suddenly I was angry. Seething. Here Id crouched in the bushes all night, covered in turkey crap, and now I was part of a plague. I was on my feet. No, I dont know that. (54) The final plot element to affect his internal struggle is the fate of the turkeys he toiled to save. The sight of their viscera spread across the highway does not disgust him, but quite the opposite occurs. This final failure of his life as an activist returns his personal perspective. Jim has come full-circle, to dwell once again in the world of Murderers and Torturers. I thought only of the cavern opening inside me and how to fill it.Meat, and I spoke

Times can and will change, people can and will change, and in Charles Dickenss A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge could and did change. In the beginning of the tale, we see him as a cruel, miserly and insensitive old man and after he has his dreams, he is no longer that, but a caring, sympathetic and generous man instead.

In the first stave of the story, Scrooges character was revealed as unkind, uncharitable and overall cruel. He refuses to heat his own office, much less that of his impoverished yet hard working clerk and even goes so far as to try and deny him a Christmas break, stating that his clerk was trying to rob him of the wages he would dole out for the day of vacation. This shows us that he is miserly and cruel, typically what we would call cheap. When the association of men comes looking for donations to help the unfortunate, he not only says no, he goes so far as to say they should decrease the excess population and do it quickly. He feels no qualms or inner guilt for saying such a heartless thing, but feels triumphant and pleased. When his beloved sisters child invites him to his familys Christmas dinner, he rejected the offer in a less than gracious fashion, ignoring his nephews earnest pleads and overtures of friendship and love.[p.4] Scrooge shows no compassion or caring in any of the scenarios stated. He cares not for those surrounding him or those who try to be good to him, but cares only for his financial well being.

We begin to see the transformation in Stave Two when the first ghost, the Ghost of Christmas Past, takes Scrooge back to his boyhood school. The ghost shows him the Christmas where his sister Fan came to bring him home. It is the first time that we see any positive emotion in Scrooge and he begins to babble about all of the good memories from that time in his life. The Ghost of Christmas Past also takes him to his first employers building. He fondly recounts the memories of working there and the parties that Old Fezziwig, as he is called, gave to bring joy. Scrooge defends the parties to the Ghost of Christmas Past; saying that Fezziwig had the power to make his workers either miserable or joyous and he chose the former. He praised Fezziwig for his effort and went so far as to admit that "the happiness he gave is as great as if it cost a fortune."[p.6] The ghost also takes him back to his time with his love, Bess. They are having a disagreement about whether Scrooge had changed from a loving, caring person to a financially driven cold man. Scrooge is greatly upset by seeing Bess leave him once again and begs the ghost to take him home and show him no more.[p.8] The cold shell that was formed so many years around Ebenezer Scrooge is beginning to fall away.

In Stave , Scrooge is still changing. He begins questioning why so many are without common necessaries and common comforts and blames the Ghost of Christmas Present for this deprivation.[p.6] When the ghost takes him to the Cratchit residency, he looks upon the joy they share in simply being together and begins to sympathize with his over worked clerk. His heart aches at the probable demise of Tiny Tim and he demands the sparing of the child.[p.40] Not long after questioning the fate of Tiny Tim, Bob thankfully toasts to Scrooge. Scrooge is flattered until Mrs. Cratchit breaks in, angrily ranting about his miserliness. Scrooge is greatly affected by his Christmas visit to the Cratchits. He realizes that they live very poorly and is quite sorry. He resolves to be kinder and more generous to the Cratchits and the poor in general. Cheap University Papers on Scroogy

The last episode of change occurs in Stave 4. The Ghost of Christmas Future escorts Scrooge into the future, showing him his grave and the peasants laboring over it. They are laughing about his death and the way he saved every penny. Scrooge is deeply saddened by the fact that the only mourners to attend his funeral were to be there simply out of need for food.[p.5] The ghost then takes him to a scene where robbers are getting items appraised from his home. The thieves show no remorse and joke over him being there while they ransacked his house. This makes him fearful and anxious about what might happen. He vows to be a better man and be more generous to all.[p.6]

When he wakes up that morning, he is delighted to be alive. He bubbles over with good intentions and checks to make sure all is as it was when he fell asleep. The first thing he does is order a huge turkey to be taken to the Cratchit home on Christmas morning.[p.64] This shows his change perfectly. Not only is he happy that Bob is sharing time with his family, he is willing to supplement the material aspect of it and receive no recognition. The mere thought of helping the Cratchits makes him giddy. He also runs into one of the men that were collecting funds for the needy and makes a generous donation to them.[p.66] The man is very surprised and all that Scrooge can do is laugh. To his nephews is where Scrooge goes next. He wants to begin a relationship with Fred and his wife and makes an answer to Freds previous question about being friends after all. Among many other things, Scrooge raises Bobs salary and offers to help support the Cratchits.

Scrooge made a one hundred percent turn around. He is, at the end of the story, as kind and as generous as any man could be expected to be, as avidly interested in his fellow mans welfare as he was previously in his bank account, as happy and giddy as a small child in a first snow. As was the stated theory earlier, times can and do change, people can and do change, but Scrooge could and did change.

The rain poured down; it was cold, wet and dreary as ever. Frank Dunne sat in the undersized fishing vessel, hoping the rain will wash away the pain. But the pain only grew. That pain came from the great loss he had suffered, the loss of his friends in battle. Frank had proudly represented Australia in the battlefields of Gallipoli. He risked his life for his country and in return for his service he had gained nothing and lost everything. A single tear trailed down his face. Life was so very cruel.

He consumed some strong alcohol; it reminded him of all the times he drank with his mates in pubs back in Perth gambling, laughing, the memory brought a smile to his grave face. He was going home. Home to his family where he could put the heartbreak of Gallipoli behind him. The rain had puddled the ships deck reflecting his face. The face of a handsome young man with untidy brown hair and near perfect complexion, with cheek bones, high and sculpted and brown eyes that shone with intensity.

The rain fell heavier, the drops of rain feeling like bullets against his skin. The rain was pelting hard against the wooden deck drowning out the soft splash of waves against the boat. The sea was getting rough and the wind howled. A flash of light in the horizon lit up the dark clouded sky. Suddenly, a huge wave descended on frank and his boat. The wave engulfed the boat until it drifted far, far away. Frank using the pack for support managed to stay afloat. He was a strong swimmer, Frank put his muscular arms to the work he swum stroke after stroke but slowly the energy was draining away from him. The water was icy cold and he felt numbness in his legs. Frank half swam and half floated so he could save his energy. As was swimming he saw a large and beautiful silver fish surfacing

At its most basic, architecture is the art of organizing space. The process unfolds, gradually impacting more and more elements of a built environment interiors, landscape, engineering, planning, graphics. Because good design does not occur in a vacuum. It is created in response to the specific needs of the client and to the opportunities presented by the site. It is out of these driving forces that our interior spaces, our buildings, our communities blossom and grow. My teacher once said You begin with the design of a chair, which is grouped to form a room. Grouping rooms forms a house or building, which are planned a neighbourhoods. When you group the neighbourhoods, you have formed the community. With this organic approach to design, there are no set solutions, no single style or signature. We are problem-solvers, designing environments to help our clients meet their objectives. And yet we are also artists, recognizing that our designs affect the quality of peoples lives, and that the spaces we create must go beyond pure fiction. How well a building fulfills its human purpose is the standard by which we judge whether that building has meaning. If it does not ease the spirit as well as the task, if it does not stir the imagination as well as contribute to the bottom line, then it is not a significant success. We have a remarkable opportunity to make a difference in peoples lives. Through humanistic design and thoughtful site planning, and by encouraging an awareness of our impact on the global ecosystem, we can help make the world a better place to live.

Buckley vs. Valeo, this case in 176 provided a basis for groups to spend a lot of money to support political candidates. The Buckley case involved a campaign finance reform act in 171. Congress passed the Federal Election Campaign Act of 171 (FECA), and changed it in 174, in a effort to control the spending and influence or special interest groups. Unhappy with several FECA parts, Buckley, among other federal officer holders and candidates for office, and some organizations brought suit in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. The suit was against various federal officials, Valeo, Secretary of the United State Senate, and against the FEC created by the act. Thinking the provisions of the 174 amendments were unconstitutional, Buckley, and others, wished to prevent the amendments form affecting the 176 election. The provisions were(1) Expenditures in support of a "clearly identified candidate" by groups or individual needed to be limited () Disclosing the source of every contribution and expenditure over $100 and requiring detailed reports of contributions and expenditures () establishing a public funding system for political parties (4) to enforce the act an eight member commission, the FEC, would permit a majority of the members to be selected by Congress.

The United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia rejected Buckleys attacks on FECA, for the most part. SO Buckley, and others, to their case to the United States Supreme Court. The Courts ruling was complex with justices agreeing to and disagreeing with certain parts. But they did agree on basic issues. The Court found contribution limits good so candidates would not depend on large contributors and their influence. The court also ruled, on that same act, the expenditure restrictions on political committees were unconstitutional. The Court also stuck with the record keeping and disclosure provisions of FECA. The Court thought the provisions serve an important purpose to the government in informing the public as to whom the contributions and corrupts the political process. The Court supported public funding of presidential campaigns. The Court held unconstitutional the previsions allowing Congress to select the majority of the members of the FEC.

Buckley legalized unlimited independent expenditures by individuals, wealthy people and groups, and that made him happy. The Court viewed spending to express political views as a type of speech. In 17 further amendments to FECA let spending limits on money given to political parties directly to be used for activities such as volunteer efforts, voter registration, and for campaign materials. "Soft money" can not be given to specific candidates or to the candidates election committees but, could go to the party as a whole. Cheap Custom Essays on Six Degrees of Seperation

The decision in the case was the court found some provisions constitutional, for example the limits on contribution, and other things it found unconstitutional, an example of that would be provisions on expenditures and the way the Federal Election commission members were selected. The decision greatly changed campaign finance laws. The biggest change was the finding that no restrictions on contributions from individuals and groups could be as long as the contributions were not directly part of an election campaign.

The poetry and play of "The Taming of the Shrew" is an epic comedy and drama of the unique views on why the characters marry whomever they did for true love and true greed. Many people have different opinions on what reasons the characters have to marry the people that they did. On my opinion, I believe the characters have chosen the people for more sacred reasons than greed. Overall, the poetry "the Taming of the Shrew", shows many dimensions to love than what some people comprehend.

In this story, different characters elaborated on whom they want to marry, and what reason he or she had to marry this certain person. In this story, many of the male characters, like Petruchio, went to Padua to marry a wealthy woman just for money reasons, not love. As this story progressed, the true love blossomed from greed. As many characters showed their devotion to each other, some played tricks on each other and others wouldnt open themselves up to the idea of actually loving other characters. For instance, in this poetry Bianca always "played" Hortensio from the day he acted as her music teacher. She would always act as if she liked Hortensio very much but she never wanted to marry him. Also, Kate would never open up to Petruchio, so she insulted him and resisted to be with him. The reader gradually see Petruchios devotion to "tame" Kate through the hardest of times and transform her into a model of society. Obviously there is a grand amount of love in this story, and you have to be blind not to notice that.

Many characters, in belief, marry each other for reasons of love than greed. It seems as if the characters lead the readers to believe the characters are marrying for greed purposes. What is apparent is each male character who wanted to marry a wealthy woman had a large challenge to get her love. For instance, Bianca was giving Hortensio a hard time to earn her hand in marriage. Also, Petruchio had to act just like Kate and show her the pain she is expressing towards others. Each character had to show the woman he was marrying they are marrying her for love, the female characters saw what they were doing so they made them work. Order Custom Essay on View of Marriage in the Taming of the Shrew

Each male character showed different methods to win approval of marriage. Every male character had their ups and downs on being trusted by the women. Petruchio had to be able to talk to Kate just to get started with marriage. Eventually, he had to act just like Kate to change her so everyone will approve her into society. Petruchio didnt have to do that but he did just for her sake. That is true love. Bianca gave Hortensio a very tough time because she wanted him to express his devotion to her. She wanted to see him try to prove that there is love if there is marriage, not just for money. Definitely there are many different views of love that are expressed by each character.

As said before, "the taming of the shrew," is an epic story of which love triumphs over stubbornness. Almost all characters swallowed their pride and got along with their partner. Not all the characters had the luck that others had in marriage, but most did. Overall this showed many aspects of love that came from nowhere.

ORIENTALISM

In Edward Saids thesis entitled, Orientalism he examines the history of "Orientalism". "It is a way of coming to terms with the Orient that is based on the Orients special place in European Western experience". That is, Europes vast and rich history with their geographical neighbours and how this affected one anothers rise. Europes history with the Orient goes back to the times of colonies. While Said notes that Americas new history is more recently defined with Asiatic wars in Japan and Korea. Orientalism is vaster in its definition. Said describes three meanings of Orientalism. There is a scholarly approach to the study. "Anyone who teaches, writes about, or researches the Orient…is an Orientalist." (Said, 0). The term is less favoured today because it denotes a certain sense of superiority over the Orient. Mainly, however "Orientalism is a style of thought based upon an ontological and epistemological distinction made between the Orient and the Occident."(1). This distinction allowed writers to use it as a foreground for various writing themes. The last meaning brings to the thesis its discourse, "…a Western style for dominating, restructuring, and having authority with the Orient." (1). The belief that Europe was able to manage and produce the Orient during the post-Enlightenment period.

During early nineteenth century the "Orient" mainly referred to India and the bible lands and from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the beginning of World War II France and Britain dominated the Orient and thus, Orientalism. After World War II it became Americas land and mentality. It is from the Occident (Britain, France and America) there is a strong form of texts called Orientalist.

It is important to note that the Orient and Occident are man-made and have their own true traditions and existence. The two entities need and support one another. There could not be Orientalism without each other and each entity would not be the same without their support. Three qualifications that support this according to Said are There are actually cultures who live in the Orient that know the reality far greater than those living and writing in the West, "the regular constellation of ideas as the pre-eminent thing about the Orient, and not to its mere being." (). The second qualification is the understanding of configurations of power, Said gives an example of Flaubert and his encounter with an Egyptian courtesan. He describes a "typical Oriental" to be subservient and dutiful. This supports an Orientalism discourse of the pattern of strength and power between East and West. Lastly, "Orientalism is not an airy European fantasy…but a created body of theory and practice in which, for many generations, there has been a considerable material investment." (4). The effort made by examining the Orient has allowed Westerners to understand the Orient.

Write your Orientalism research paper

Gramsci has made two distinctions between civil and political society. Culture lies within the civil society and the dominating form is called, hegemony. It is "an indispensable concept for any understanding of cultural life in the industrial West" (4). It is in this work that reiterates the point that Europe is superior to the Orient.

Said details the difference of pure and political thought. Said points out his own area of study, which is the 'humanist or humanities. He stresses that humanities dont involve anything political. Said studies Orientalism "as a dynamic exchange between individual authors and the large political concerns shaped by the three great empires- in whose intellectual and imaginative territory the writing was produced." (0). Said recognizes that the study of Orientalism must have a formidable background in politics as he raises several questions, such as, " What other sorts of intellectual, aesthetic, scholarly, and cultural energies went into the making of an imperialist tradition like the Orientalist one?" (0). Said asks the methodological question in which he speaks of a "strategic location" and "formation." The strategic location is a way of describing the authors position in and text and the strategic formation is the way we analyze a text. Said understands the deep importance of representing the Orient. They must, in some way locate themselves in the Orient. Still, he acknowledges that every Orientalist assumes some precedent. Thus, the use of intertextuality in time will give strength and authority to the ideas used. It worries him because the earliest representations of the Orient were highly artificial. There is an obvious strength in language in text and it will depend on the West to represent the Orient.

There is an unconscious positivity called 'latent Orientalism and there are the various stated views about Oriental society called 'manifest Orientalism. Nineteenth century writers Said examined agreed that the Orient was a land in need of Western support. They were in need of civilization, christianisation and education. This was the situation from the 1870s to the early nineteenth century. Said gives many examples of Orientalism discourse in books and theses written at the time that support the claim of racial inequality. There were classic Oriental stereotypes made; Oriental males were viewed with contempt and fear, while the women expressed unlimited sensuality. "Moreover the male conception of the world, in its effect upon the practicing Orientalist, tends to be static…the very possibility of development, transformation, human movement…is denied to the Orient and the Oriental." (5).
