Soldiers patrolled through Tikrit and the eastern banks of the Tigris river, site of a deadly attack Thursday by Saddam loyalists. The patrol began late Friday and ended early Saturday. Intended as a show of force, it was also an attempt to flush out pockets of armed resistance in the area.

We took a tank company and a Bradley company, Lt. Col. Steve Russell, the 1st Battalion commander of the 4th Infantry Divisions nd Infantry Regiment, told The Associated Press. We wanted to send a message.

The U.S. troops usually patrol in smaller vehicles but this operation came after a series of attacks Thursday described by the military as some of the fiercest and best coordinated since American forces arrived in the Tikrit area in April.

Fifty-eight Iraqis were captured after the attacks and U.S. troops seized a considerable number of weapons from a minivan fleeing the area, the military said.

During the patrol, tanks swept through residential areas, occasionally dismounting to set up security points, to check cars and people leaving Tikrit after the citys 11 p.m. curfew.

The patrol ended without incident.

We wanted to make contact with the enemy, Russell said. If they want, well surely oblige him.

Order your Morality of Holden from "The Catcher In the Rye" paper at affordable prices!

To be moral or immoral is based solely upon ones idea of morality and relationships to others. Situations in life can reveal the morality of ones character due to their course of action. Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salingers The Catcher in the Rye is the protagonist to whom the point of view of the novel is based upon. Cue to the first person biased narrative, the reader can analyze his thoughts and actions and generate their own idea of Holdens character. Holden is a moral character who has been influenced by societys expectations of him as an adult and human instinct to take part in several immoral activities but his intent is to protect innocence and truth.

Holden has been affected by society to acquire habits such as smoking, cursing, picking fights, and drinking excessively. These are characteristics of stereotypical immoral behavior. His chain smoking is pointed out when he is out of breath from running to Mr. Spencers house and he claims, "Im quite a heavy smoker, for one thing" (5). He informs the reader this as if to prove that he can take part in adult activities. He asks Morrows mother, "Would you care for a cigarette?" (55). He attempts to appear more mature than he really is. Several times throughout the novel a recurring motif of alcohol is present. Holden drinks in an unsuccessful attempt to be accepted into adulthood. He invites Morrows mother to join him for a cocktail but she declines politely (55). She does not recognize him as an adult with whom she would treat as an equal. He is rejected once again in the Lavender Room when he orders a drink and the waiter believes that he is a minor. Holden has not yet been fully accepted as an adult. He rebels against society and order when he says, "I lay on my bed and lit a cigarette. You werent allowed to smoke in the dorm…I did it to annoy Stradlater" (41). In this instance he admits that he is only smoking to rebel against the school rules and to challenge Stradlater. The purpose of annoying Stradlater is to get his attention and have him admit what really happened during his date with Jane. Holden is upset due to the fact that Stradlater may have done something immoral with Jane and believes that Stradlater deserves to be punished. Holden "…got up from the bed…and then tried to sock him, with all my might, right smack in the toothbrush, so it would split his goddamn throat open" (4). He believes that a man should care about the girl that hes "giving the time to" when he says, "[Stradlater] didnt even care if a girl kept all her kings in the back row or not" (44). This reveals Holdens opinions towards sexual intimacy and indirectly thinks that two people should care about each other instead of only having a sexual relationship. During the conversation and fight between Holden and Stradlater, Holden swears several times. He yells at him, "You dont even know if her first name is Jane or Jean, ya goddam moron!" (44). He swears to get his point across. His vulgarity is the only method of drawing attention to his ideas and opinions. Holden actively participates in several unsociable and immoral behavior but for a good cause based on his own morals.

Holdens intents differ greatly from his actions throughout the course of the novel. Many times Holden has immoral thoughts but he usually doesnt act upon them because his morals prevent him from doing so. He is still a virgin at the time that he tells the story. He admits "If you want to know the truth, Im a virgin. I really am. Ive hadquite a few opportunities to lose my virginity and all, but Ive never got around to it yet" (). He informs the reader that whenever a girl tells him to stop, he stops. This is unlike most adolescent boys his age who do not appreciate the girl whom theyre with. Holdens morals prevent him from having sex with a girl if she protests or doesnt consent to it. At the Edmunt Hotel the elevator guy, Maurice, asks him if he would like a prostitute for "five bucks a throw" (1). Holden says okay even though immediately after he says "It was against my principles and all" (1). He tries to start a conversation with her and offers her a smoke. Once again he makes an attempt to participate in casual adult activity. He has a genuine interest in getting to know who she is before having sex with her. Although Holden has a longing for sex, he decides against it. He makes up a lie to excuse himself from having sex with her and still pays her the five dollars. Holden keeps his word when he says that he will pay her even if they dont have sex. He also feels sorry for her because she has not been as fortunate to be economically supported. Holden has good worthy morals that go against his physical wants. Afterwards, Maurice roughs him up for another five dollars. Holden imagines himself shooting Maurice "Id plug him…six shots through his fat hairy belly" and then committing suicide (104). But he is only glorifying the movies and does not make any attempt to act upon his desires.

Hormones and human instinct cause Holden to be very curious towards the subject of sex and he can almost be characterized as sexually perverted when he admits to being, "the biggest sex maniac you ever saw" (6). In order to satisfy his sexual curiosity, he calls a former student advisor, Luce. Holden gives Luce the impression thathe would like to have a drink with him and have an intelligent conversation. However, Holden immediately starts off with the topic of sex, "Hows your sex life?" (144). Sex both fascinates and scares Holden, but he is still curious. When he arrives at the Edmunt Hotel, he avidly watches intently while a couple spit in each others faces and a man dresses up as a woman. While watching those people he says, "the trouble was, that kind of junk is sort of fascinating to watch" (6). Holden admits that "Sex is something I just dont understand" (6). He avoids actually having sex with prostitute even though he is interested. Holden talks about sex excessively but doesnt actually do anything immoral. Help with essay on Morality of Holden from "The Catcher In the Rye"

Excessive lying is a negative trait of Holdens but his motive for being dishonest is usually for the benefit of others. He lies to Morrows mother in the train even though he says that he thinks of Morrow as "the biggest bastard that ever went to Pencey" (54). Then he portrays him as being a shy, humble kid. Holdens motive for lying is to protect her from the truth of how her son really is. He lies to the prostitute that he wasnt physically healthy so that she wouldnt feel offended that he didnt become "very sexy" around her (5). Holden lies to several people such as the waiters in the bars and the elevator boys just so that they wouldnt believe that they were doing anything wrong by serving him drinks or sending him a prostitute even though he is a minor. Most of his lies are mainly harmless white lies. He tells the truth to those who are close to him such as Phoebe and Mr. Antolini. These are the people who care about him and wont judge him. Holden lies to protect others from the truth which may be harder to take. Holden also stands up for what he believes is honest. When Maurice and Sunny approach himdemanding ten dollars, Holden stands firm with his claim that it was only worth five dollars. Maurice beats him up while Sunny takes the money (10). Instead of giving in, Holden fights for what he believes is the truth.

Holden tries to preserve and protect the innocence of children throughout the course of the novel. At Phoebes school, Holden spots a "fuck you" sign written on the wall. He goes into an in depth explanation of what may happen if the innocent little kids saw it. Holden finally "rubbed it out" with his hand (01). He attempts to keep the children from maturing and learning the evils of society and adulthood. Holden concerns himself with saving the children from their loss of innocence.

Holden believes that people only deserve the amount of respect that they show towards others. This is seen through his encounter with the nuns. They dont treat him like a child and unlike the other adult phonies, they live humbly and selflessly. He shows them equal respect and donates ten dollars to their school. He admires the innocence and purity of children. He treats children as equals when he talks with them.

Holden has several characteristics of an immoral person such as smoking, drinking, cursing, fighting, lying, and being obsessed with sex. But these are all superficial qualities that barely skim over the character of Holden Caulfield. Situations that he is placed in cause him to react defensively. He puts on a pretense of being tough and has several immoral thoughts throughout his four day novel. However, he is filled with strong values of what is right and wrong, and he sticks to them. The intent of Holdens actions reveal his character to be moral.

Grant Billing, the leading man of an investment group has reached an agreement with Calgary based company Cell-loc, to reorganize and provide a capital injection. Cell-loc will transfer all current technology assets to a subsidiary company, called Techco, where all the shares will be handed to their shareholders on a share per share basis. Cell-loc will move its operations to Techco while an oil and gas company headed by Grant Billing will move into Cell-locs location. The Directors of Cell-loc right now will become the new Board of Directors for Techco, and it is anticipated that the senior management of Cell-loc will become a large part of the management team at Techco. The CEO of Cell-loc, Sheldon Reid, will not make the move with the rest of the board because he will join Mr. Billing on the board of the newly formed oil and gas company, Capitol Energy Resources Ltd.

The investment group will be providing $4. million to pay liabilities of Cell-loc and to recapitalize the new companies going forward. After the restructuring is approved by the Court of Queens Bench of Alberta through a Plan of Arrangement, Techco will receive a cash injection of around $.5 million. This will be after all existing trade payables related to the companys technology business have been retired. Techco will now have a fresh start and own all of Cell-locs technology assets and have $.5 million to implement its business plan which is to go global.

In the business environment there is room to be an enormous contributor, but there is also the possibility of becoming a great failure. Right now it is all about the advancing technology and the advantages of making everything more efficient. This is why everything is becoming easier to use and operate. Now more and more products are becoming wireless, Cell-locs specialty. They have an advantage at the moment for being an innovator in their field of wireless technology. They have been highly successful with developing network-based wireless location products enabling location-based services. According to Techcos home web page they have been a supplier and producer of electrical technology distributed to other countries as well as Cell-loc. Cell-loc does not have to go far to reach their supplier anymore now that they are part of the same company. The competition from other companies will always be on the rise because every business is trying to find ways to make their operations more cost efficient and if developing a product rather than paying for a foreign product is the way to go, so be it. This can make a company a failure by not introducing a new better product sooner. With customers over seas there will always be a number of companies whose technology are not as advanced as a company like Cell-loc so they will be looking for that extra boost and try to find the best company that can give it to them. Over the last twenty-five years the most rapid changes have occurred in technology. The technological conditions are what control this business environment.

Success factors for a business such as Cell-loc would include being able to find the demand for their services. They have done business with many overseas countries and should continue to do so. Overseas is where they have the best chances of finding new companies that are a little behind current advances in technology and in need of assistance they are willing to pay for. Being able to reach people near and far is also an important factor to success. Being able to obtain and retain customers over seas will provide a look of success that other companies shopping for services will recognize and want to get involved with. This is all part of creating a reputation with other companies that will get noticed by new companies. A reputation of being a leader and an innovator in a certain field will keep people coming back to find out what is new and where it can fit into their future plans. Pleasing the current market will lead to expansion which is exactly what Cell-loc is looking for, global market.

To be successful there has to be room for the business to move forward and improve what it is already doing. With electronic technology getting better all the time a business must do the same to succeed. Cell-loc is moving its operations to Techco, which is currently a supplier producer. Joining a producer with another producer is a great way to get two brains operating together to expand and innovate in the proper direction that will be successful for a business in this market. Being able to grow together from what each part already knows can increase production of new and useful products providing more options a company can offer to another. Knowing what the market needs staying on top of the technological advances, and being able to provide efficient service to customers is what it takes to be successful in the wireless electronic business.

Techcos major strength comes from the support from the investment group led by Grant Billing. This group invested $4. million for Cell-Loc to carry out its reorganization. As a result, Techco emerges with no debts, no liabilities, and $.5 million left over for the sole purpose of carrying out their new business plan. (Globe Investor, September 00) Having this money, in addition to the assets provided by Cell-Loc, gives them a great advantage over their competitors, who all had to pay for factories or office buildings with the money provided by investors. Techco will be able to implement their plan right off the bat, and that gives them a huge head start.

Techco also has a strong board of directors. When Cell-Loc reorganized, not only did they give Techco their already-developed wireless location technology, Cellocate™, but they also sent their experienced board of directors to lead and manage the company. For a company to start off with that kind of experience gives them another head start. Having that kind of experience leading them puts a lot of mistakes behind them.

However, in the same vein Cell-Locs board of directors may overlook what Techco had going for them before the reorganization. Before Cell-Loc moved in, Techco was a supplier of a variety of electronics to a large number of companies. It would be a shame to waste what has made Techco successful as a smaller company. The board of directors from Cell-Loc may only be interested in seeing Cell-Locs technology grow. It would be easy for them to leave Techcos previous production aside. They will have let a good opportunity slip through their fingers. The board of directors bias toward Cell-Loc products presents a weakness for Techco.

Another problem is created with Techcos acquisition of Cell-Loc technology. They are going to need some time to relearn everything Cell-Loc has learned about producing Cellocate™. This problem is partially remedied by Cell-Loc providing Techco with an experienced board of directors, but the problem still exists at the middle and entry levels of employees. Techco is not familiar with the products they will be producing, and that is a definite weakness to their company.

Techcos strength comes from everything that Cell-Loc has left for them. This presents for them an opportunity for growth. At this point they need to make a plan that will bring them to success. They have $.5 million to spend on it, so they have a few options to choose from. This sort of opportunity doesnt come very often, so they had better choose well. This is an important decision point that will put Techco either on the path to success, or the path to failure.

There is another opportunity for Cell-Loc arising from their reorganization. Before the agreement, Techcos strategy was to deal with a very large number of companies on a small scale. Techco manufactured and sold miscellaneous electronics. Cell-Loc, by giving Techco all of their technology assets, has effectively created a connection with all of Techcos customers. Assuming their customers were satisfied with their products, Techco has established trust with their customers. With Techco selling Cell-Locs technology, Techcos regular customers are much more likely to buy it.

However, Cell-Locs reorganization does bring to light a looming threat. Cell-Locs strength is that they are among the first in the industry of wireless location technology. If they take too long to market their product, they make it possible for their competitors to catch up with them. Cell-Loc has been going steadily downhill for a while, frantically changing plans in hopes of boosting profits. They have even changed their CEO a couple of times. (Karleff) Their product, which was once on the very top of technological innovation, is starting to become old. There is a danger as technology advances that a competitor will come up with a better way to locate cell phones. Cell-Locs reorganization, although it may be a good idea financially, is just another delay to taking action. It shows more delay on Cell-Locs part to get their product out on the market, and very soon they may be too late.

London

After reading William Wordsworths poem, "London, 180" and William Blakes "London", I tried to strip each down to its basic meanings. Each poem had similar meaning along with different characteristics. I looked at each poem in simplest text possible and got the same theme from each. From two points of view on London, it seems to be agreed, that during this time period, London was full of defeat and sorrow.

In breaking down the first poem, "London, 180", I first saw its general theme to be about England not being what it once was. Even the men of England have lost what they once were. The author writes to Milton. I do not know who this is, but can only assume that it was someone the author must have thought highly of. The reason for this is the way he tells him that England needed him. He then refers to him as if he had taken some godly path in life…possibly death. The last line was something that interested me as well. It says, "So didst thou travel on lifes common way, In cheerful godliness; and yet thy heart The lowliest duties on herself did lay." I took this to be a question directed at Milton, asking if he was able to "go" peacefully, even with the burden of England on his heart. The author also describes what has happened to London, England. He calls her a fen with stagnant waters. I get a swampy image in my head when I hear this. The men are made out as selfish, still with hopes of having it all. I think the downfall of the men is directly related to the downfall of England. I also thought it was interesting how he refers to England as "she". To me, by calling it she, it gives imagery of England being once delicate and now helpless. The only irony I found in the poem was the fact that he says, "we are selfish men" in a regretful manner, but then asks for "virtue, freedom, and power" in a selfish way. Buy LONDON term paper

The second poem, "London", has the same feel to it. It is apparent that England has fallen on hard times and sorrow. It generally speaks of observations while walking by the Thames. I noticed that while describing what he sees and hears, he uses the word "cry" a lot. "In the cry of every man, In every Infants cry of fear, and How the Chimney-sweepers cry". Crying is usually connected with children. When the author uses it for man as well as Infant, I think that he brings the child-like quality out in man. In describing "blood down Palace walls", I think it signifies the defeat or corruption in the monarchy. I feel like this poem is straight to the point in what England has become.

When the two poems are compared, obviously the first similarity is that they are about the same thing. London is in a depressing state and each poem expresses that. On this note, each also gives insight to how it affects the people. "London, 180", states how the men have given up their inward happiness. "London" has a line in the fist verse that says, "And mark in every face I meet Marks of weakness, marks of woe." The basic tone of each poem is sadness. They both use the same imagery to describe this depression and use it well.

However, in contrast to each other, I was able to find more. First of all, "London, 180" is actually speaking to someone in particular. Not only this, but they are speaking to Milton as if to ask for help. "London" is simply a generalization of observations. "London, 180" also gives the feel like the author wants something to be done to assist the situation. "London", on the other hand, calls for no resolution to the problem. It is basically about what is seen and heard, but not what anyone can do to change it. Blakes poem also is more about the town of London and the people in it. It definitely focuses more on the people specifically. Wordsworths poem seems to be more about England itself. It briefly discusses the people, but in a way that deals with him personally as opposed to what he sees. Even the structure of each poem is completely different. "London" is basically every other line in each verse rhyming. "London, 180" has a strange, unorganized rhyme pattern. Each poem has a different focus in whole.

It was hard to compare and contrast two poems when I dont know as much about it as I should. At first I thought they would compare more just by reading the title and glancing at the poem itself. Instead, I got a deeper insight by breaking each one down to see what they each had to offer. I found the two perspectives to be interesting and personable. Although, in the end I think each poem could easily go hand in hand in telling the basic sorrows of London, England.

In 1, I got a job working at Skechers U.S.A on 4th ST. It was a pretty fun job. Everyone was really nice and amicable. Around the rd or fourth month, I noticed there was sort of like an attic door on the ceiling of the second floor. The second floor is where the stock room and a small employees lounge was. I spent a lot of time there because I loved working in stock, but I had never noticed that that door was there.

When I became aware of it, I asked one of my managers what was up there, and she asked if I wanted to see. Now, you have to understand Im a terribly curious person, so I didnt care when she told me to get a flashlight because it was pitch black. She pulled down the door and unfolded the stairs. When we got to the top she told me to be careful because there was a huge hole in the floor and to go through the first door I saw. I waited for her to catch up before I continued. She wasnt joking about that huge hole, we actually had to sprint Olympic style from one side to the other. When she opened the door we turned on our flashlights and I saw the most amazing sight of my life.

We were in the middle of a living room. I know that doesnt sound as exciting, but this living room had a tub in the middle of it that said 1. I kept looking around and I found old picture frames and mirrors. Everything was coated in a thin layer of dust and smelled musky, like wood after its been sitting in the rain for while. We continued exploring and found that we were in an old building that was probably running in the early 100s. We found two additional floors with more apartments, which contained matchbooks dated 1, old seltzer water bottles, an armoire with drawers covered in old newspapers, old stoves and old pennies. It genuinely felt like we had gone back in time.

It was the most amazing feeling finding things that are part of a time I have only read about. After I graduate from TCI, I plan to go back school for Historic Preservation. I feel very grateful because this is actually something that I love and not many people have the privilege to find their true passion. I know this might not seem like a great "first time" but to me it was like nothing I have or ever will experience.

In the application of Symbolic Interaction to the area of marital satisfaction, it is important to conceptualize the importance of interactions between actors, such as a husband and wife. According to this theory, for a husband and wife to understand each others behavior, they must understand the meanings of the individual actor. This means that to understand behavior, we must understand the meaning that an action has for an actor. One of the key components to a successful relationship is to develop good communication skills which will lead to understanding to one another. Therefore, understanding is crucial to achieve a high level of marital satisfaction.

Symbolic interaction uses the concept of self to represent that which did an act (I) and that which was acted upon (me). This means that a partner will represent themselves as both subject and an object. As a subject, a partner will conceptualize their own actions. As an object, others, such as their spouse, will conceptualize their actions. The concept of self is consistently used within a marriage. Both spouses will interpret their own actions and each others actions. Also, the definition of situation is consistently used in marriage. This means that what we define as real will have real consequences. Both partners in a marriage have the ability to define situations for themselves but this doesnt mean that their partner will define it the same way.

Another major concept of the symbolic interaction theory is the concept of the looking glass self. This concept is the image one has of himself of herself is based on reflecting on the perceptions of what others tell them. Therefore, in a healthy marriage, partners will tell one another positive things about each other and try to limit negativity. Also, it is important for a partner to evaluate their behaviors and actions in eyes of their partner. For example, a husband who is away from his wife and about to make a decision that could affect both of them, has to say, "What will my wife think if I make this decision without her?" This concept is very important to achieve marital satisfaction. A partner has his own image of himself but must also maintain the image that their partner has of them. Help with essay on symbolic interaction

The role concepts of symbolic interaction theory are extremely relevant to marital satisfaction. The concept of a role is to take the place of the actor or partner. Therefore, role taking allows a partner to put themselves in the place of their partner. This will allow a greater understanding of their partner and their partners actions. In a marriage, role expectations and role clarity can predict the level of marital satisfaction. When the role expectations are extremely high and a partner is unable to fulfill the expectation, this may lead to a low level of marital satisfaction. For example, if a husband assumes the role of staying home with the kids and a wife has a certain expectation to have all the housework done and her husband doesnt meet that expectation this could lead to a low level of marital satisfaction. Furthermore, when roles arent clear or there is an over abundance of roles on a spouse, know as role strain, they to can lead to a lower level of marital satisfaction.

The propositions of symbolic interaction literally predict the level of satisfaction in a marriage. According to symbolic interaction, the quality of a persons role enactment in a relationship positively affects the individuals satisfaction with the relationship. This means that the level of satisfaction between spouses will improve if spouses feel that they are performing well in their roles as spouses. Also, the greater diversification of a spouses role, the less consensus the spouse will perceive in the expectations about those roles. This diversification could also lead to a low level of marital satisfaction because a spouse in unclear of what their role as a spouse is. Finally, the greater perceived role stain a partner has that results from performing a role, the less ease in making a transition into the role and the greater the ease in making a transition out of the role. If the role of a spouse is to work and then the spouse is forced to be the one who stays home with the kids, if the spouse has a perception of role strain, then the transition will not be smooth. Thus, this could lead to a low level of marital satisfaction.

Please note that this sample paper on symbolic interaction is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on symbolic interaction, we are here to assist you. Susan Bordo works at the University of Kentucky as the Otis A. Singletary Chair of Humanities.

In Hunger as Ideology, Bordo argues that "the various cultural ideologies, both explicit and implicit, conscious and unconscious at work in an advertisement often play a powerful role in the way we think about the world and our place in it. One of the issues that Bordo delves into is the falsehood that women do not eat much. Granted, some women have petite appetites. However, the majority of women only portray this image because society views women that eats little to be attractive and feminine. Bordo gives an example of this type of ideology in her section entitled, "The Woman Who Does Not Each Much." She opens with a commercial for Fiber Thin where two French girls who are dressing up in their mothers beautiful clothes admire one girls mother for being so thin and not eating much. They also relish in the fact that they know about her secret product - dietary supplements. Bordo uses this example of the two young French girls to show that this food obsession begins at a young age. Not only does this commercial condone the use of dietary supplements in young girls but it also praises women that eat little and creates a falsehood in the mind of society about the eating habits of women. It is a common site to see young teenagers, in their prime, starving themselves in order to fit the mold. Bordo realizes this fact and writes "almost all of us who can afford to be eating well are dieting and hungry almost all of the time."

Advertisements stereotype reality of the world to create an image of what we as Americans aspire to be. Advertisers know that self-esteem has a lot do with persuading consumers to buy their products. If a woman believes she is ugly and fat, she will be eager to listen to an ad that promises results of beauty and skinniness. She will also be a lot more likely to buy the product. If a man sees a skinny guy on TV talk about a product that helped him gain muscles, the man watching will start to re-evaluate his own body and consider buying the product. We all judge people based on their outward appearance whether subconsciously or not. Americans tend to look at someone and assume we know everything about them because of what they are wearing and what kind of car they drive, or what kind of house they live in.

Bordo writes extensively on the ideas of the female body in relation to eating and beauty and attaining the perfect "look." In the beginning of her essay she says that, "today, all we experience as meaningful are appearances." Bordo believes that women will always want to look younger and slimmer. She believes that as long as companies continue to use advertisements with young, thin girls telling women they can "look like them," the companies will always make a lot of money. She also talks about the subliminal coding used in advertising. She uses an example of an advertisement for an eyeliner. The ad reads, "Soft felt tip gives you absolute control of your line." She believes that it is almost impossible for a consumer to glance at the ad and read the words "life" instead of "line." The advertisers were able to make an eyeliner ad into something that makes the viewer think about being in control of their life. Bordo reinforces the notion of control in "Men Eat and Women Prepare." This sense of control appears when the woman who has prepared the food watches as her husband devours it. "She who stands … famished before her husband, while he devours, stretched at ease, the produce of her exertions; waits his tardy permission without a word or a look of impatience, and feeds, with the humblest gratitude, and the shortest intermission of labor, on the scraps and offals which he disdains." This woman shows her ability to control her desires. Help with essay on Analization of Susan Bordo's Ideology of Hunger

In the section, "Food and Love" Bordo explains how women demonstrate their love for others by baking or preparing for dinner for others. The slogan "Nothin says lovin like something from the oven," is one example. Bordo mentions the fact that little girls are often shown learning how to prepare food for others and rarely seen being fed. In the ad for Gold Medal Flour, the young girl with flour on her overalls and shirt sleeves pushed up, taste tests the batter she and her mother, who is seen reading the recipe book, have prepared. Bordo says that the ad places mother at home and daughter preparing for her future role in the kitchen, both in their stereotypical roles.

As an example of Bordos said rules about old dualities and ideologies such as women should serve men, become homemakers, and basically do everything to keep their men happy while they are out in the blue collar work force earning a living for the entire family is demonstrated in the advertisement for Betty Crocker Black Walnut Cake (Fig. 1). It is implied that if a woman loved her family she would take time to bake and cook. The woman was expected to thrive on making her man happy. This advertisement wanted to give women the impression that women were pleased when men were pleased. Cooking and serving were supposed to be especially pleasant for the woman. Nothing could satisfy a man more than food with the exception of sex. If a woman wanted to please a man, the most definite way to do so was through his stomach.

In the advertisement for Van Camp Pork & Beans (Fig. ), the ad featured pork and beans in an elegant dish accompanied with hot dogs and a homemade loaf of bread. In addition, there are an abundance of food, which possibly suggests the woman was hosting some sort of dinner party. Therefore, even though pork and beans in a can is considered a convenience food, the implication of the woman being a hostess for a party also sends the message that the woman was taking the time to prepare a ton of other dishes in order to entertain and satisfy people other than herself.

Bordo illustrates the differences between males and females in food ads. The man in a food ad eating voraciously is seen as manly and even at times adorable. A woman in a food ad seen eating in this same fashion is seen as out of control and unfeminine. An interesting way women are persuaded into buying a product is by switching the person in the ad from a woman to a man. A man advertising a food product gives the idea that if it could satisfy even their "huge appetite," then it would definitely satisfy a woman. Bordo argues that women are represented differently in advertisements due to their relationship with food. For example, the Haagen-Dazs ad. This two page ad has a picture of both a man and a woman eating the same brand of ice cream. In the first picture the woman is eating ice cream in a delicate manner. She is eating a tiny ice cream bar and has only taken one small bite. This picture shows the woman using control while eating. The next picture is of a man who has just eaten an entire pint of ice cream. He ate it in such a manner that he left the container on its side and is licking every morsel of ice cream from the spoon.

In furtherance of Bordos argument that men and women are treated differently in food advertisements, Fig. is an advertisement for Natur-Tender steaks. The picture depicts a man hard at work on the outdoor grill. Since barbecues occur outside in nature, they are considered to be masculine. Barbecues represent a time when men can whip up a great meal in a rough and tough environment. The outdoors was a place where it was socially acceptable for a man to be. But still this advertisement is targeting the woman because she had the purchasing power and was in charge of buying the necessary groceries for the event.

Advertisers are paid to get into our heads and first see what we secretly aspire to be, and then gives us the opportunity to follow our dreams through a product they wish to sell. Bordo writes "any fool knows that advertisers manipulate reality in the service of selling their products…However, were it a meaningful or usable knowledge, it is unlikely that we would be witnessing the current spread of diet and exercise mania across racial and ethnic groups, or the explosion of technologies aimed at bodily 'correction ' and 'enhancement. We allow advertisers to manipulate us because it is a way of life.

The way that females view advertisements appear very obvious to advertisers. Advertisement agencies now how to interest women, and how to make them think. Being in control is something that is very important to women these days. In the society that we live, the only way to be normal on the outside is to be slim. Beauty is another consideration, but being slim is a huge concern among women. By gaining control of your mind it becomes easier to gain this sense of control.

Technology, the what, the where and the now! It is every place you go and involves just about everything we do. From the moment we wake up to the moment we close our eyes for the night, we are constantly bombarded by technological advancements. technology has been, in a sense, a faithful servant, ready to come to our rescue in times of need and in enriching our lives in untold ways. Technology is a term derived from the Greek term "techne," which means to bring into existence that which does not exist but has the capacity for existence. And, clearly, humans have brought into existence a remarkable array of technological products which have been, by and large, positive. Depending on your position in society and location on Earth, a most amazing feat accomplished by humans through their technology is space travel. Not only have we placed a human on the face of the moon, but we have also sent machines far into space in science explorations which may, some day, provide us with further, as yet, unknown benefits. For most of us, however, the technologies which have benefited us have to do with our personal well-being. Without strides in the sciences and medical technology, human life expectancy would still be at "cavemen" proportions; e.g. living to about age forty. Part of our relative longevity, beyond our medical advances, must be attributed to our success with nutrition and agriculture. To top it off, we have, generally, nice warm, comfortable places in which to live, free from harm from wild beasts and the whims of nature. Apart from benefits to our more basic needs - i.e. food, health, warmth and shelter - we have the luxury of many inventions our ancestors can only dream about. Refrigerators, freezers, ovens and microwaves. Those are just 4 technological advances that help everyone in their day to day life. Without these things we are unable to keep our food fresh and keep ourselves free from bacteria entering our body from food that has gone off due to lack of refrigeration. With an oven we are able to cook our foods thoroughly and get hot food when we want it. Before some technology people had to cook there food over a fire and think about how long it would take just to get the chicken cooked when today we can cook it in the oven and know that it is getting thoroughly cooked and again keeping ourselves from getting sick from bacteria. With these technology everyone benefits and that is why it is more friend then anything else and especially more friend then foe!

Ecstasy An intense exaltation of mind and feelings; seventh heaven; bliss; euphoria; paradise; intoxication. The drug first synthesized by Merck Pharmaceuticals in Germany in 11. In 17, the first study in the literature mentioning Ecstasy was published, based upon toxicological research conducted in the early 150s by the Armys chemical center; around the same time a small group of therapists and researchers began to use Ecstasy; which was known as Adam, in their practices. I personally think that Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) or better known as the "Raver Drug" Ecstasy, should be legalized for the use by doctors and/or Therapists as they see fit in their studies to help and bring their patients to a new level of self understanding and a new respect for life.

The drug now known as Ecstasy is the latest recreational drug to be made illegal in 185. The drug was put on trial that had many time guzzling processes. The scheduling process was based on the Controlled Substances Act of 170 which was based on three schedules. The MDMA (Ecstasy) attorney was first argued to put the drug on a Schedule ; where physicians could legally prescribe MDMA and all recreational use would be illegal; but medical treatment and scientific research could still be conducted. On the other hand Schedule 1 in the Controlled Substances Act stated that the substance must have a high potential for abuse, have no accepted medical use, and no "accepted safety" for use under medical supervision. The MDMA attorney also cited the lack of alleged harm to any patient as evidence of the safety of MDMA under medical supervision. The DEA (The United States Drug Enforcement Agency) chief attorney claimed that a drug did not have to have caused any actual harm before being placed into Schedule 1, simply that the drug had to have a high potential for abuse. He then argued that only the FDA (The United States Food and Drug Administration) could accept a drug for medical use, and without FDA approval, no drug could have accepted safety under medical supervision. After two years of hearings, Judge Young issued his ruling, recommending that MDMA be place in a Schedule . Despite the ruling, the DEA administrator placed MDMA into Schedule 1 making the drug illegal.(Rosenbaum Chapter 6) Ecstasy now an illegal substance and having a high risk of abuse can also become a damper on public events such as raves and other parts of club culture. The rampant use of the drug at these scenes has caused such bills to be pressed such as The RAVE Act (Reducing Americans Vulnerability to Ecstasy) which has recently been putting a stop to teen dance parties and clubs. Official acts against clubbers and ravers alike have been felt already; starting in Texas where teens have been arrested for handing out mints at the local rave/club party scenes where most teens show up for the music. Although there is a drug scene, the major force driving some officials is the large use of Ecstasy.

Although MDMA was put into schedule 1 it should have never gotten there. The decision to place MDMA in schedule 1 was immediately appealed to the U.S. court of appeals. In September of 187, after being reviewed, the decision of the DEA to place MDMA into schedule 1 was found to be flawed. The court agreed with the DEA saying that the drug did have a high potential for abuse; however, the court disagreed with the DEAs assumption that congress intended that FDA approval determined accepted medical use. As an outcome, the court voided the DEAs placement of MDMA into schedule 1 and remanded the decision back to the DEA for reconsideration. After several months the DEA placed MDMA into schedule 1 once again. The DEA devised a way to get around the FDA approval, which had been overturned in the court. A series of criteria were used that were virtually identical to current FDA approval. Since only a pharmaceutical company could afford the required studies, for which FDA permission would be impossible to secure, the DEAs new criteria was of uncertain legality. Rather than simply requiring FDA approval, the DEA broke down FDA approval into a series of criteria that looked identical to FDA approval, and then required virtually all the criteria. The real question was what was accepted medical use. The DEA argued that currently accepted medical use implies FDA approval has been clearly rejected by the courts since essentially the same issues were at stake in the current legal debate over the medical use of marijuana, the defenders of MDMAs medical use, who were drained of both patience and money, decided to lodge no further appeal. They accepted the fact that MDMA would remain in Schedule I until the legal definition of currently accepted medical use was resolved in the sense of the medical marijuana lawsuit, or until research had satisfied the FDA that MDMA was both safe and useful for human use. (Rosenbaum Chapter 6)

Custom Essays on theraputic uses of ecstasy

Is MDMA both safe and useful for human use? MDMA may have some serious long term effects on your health. Serotonin in the brain of MDMA users is 50%-80% less then healthy non-users which may lead to chronic depression and anxiety. MDMA may also impair ones memory and concentration which would eventually get gradually worse. MDMA also like most illegal drugs may dull ones intelligence. Drug users are also at risk of dehydration and even more at risk of dehydration in raves or hot parties where users may not realize there is a risk of dehydration. A 15mg pill can raise your heart beat up to 0 beats per minute over your normal rate. Also violent seizures may unlikely occur during the use of Ecstasy. MDMA may further alter the brain but for the unavailability to run tests it is a rather open category.

On another hand MDMAs psychedelic effects may help with physical troubles. The drug can reduce addictions such as Alcoholism, medical drug addiction, heroin and some other very addictive substances. MDMA itself is not addictive therefore users do not have to fear with replacing there current addiction with another. The drug is also a proven pain killer, it is a good elixir for relieving pain and distress from terminal cancer patients and other illnesses. MDMA was also once used to treat eating disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, and help in repairing damaged relationships by allowing therapists to better understand there patients.

The best reason to make MDMA legal for therapeutic use would be because of the drugs effects on ones emotions and how it effects one mentally. Users report to have become more caring, more in touch with their spiritual nature, closer to nature and having increased happiness and self-esteem. Although personal effects vary from person to person and often are hard to explain many of the empathic and subtle effects users experience. Feelings of completeness, emotional bonding and a sense of acceptance and love for others arguably persist for years after ones first experience. MDMAs potential for allowing inner psychological and possibly spiritual discovery often remain for the rest of the individuals life. Some clinics claim that MDMA is a potentially valuable psychotherapeutic agent because of the feelings of closeness and trust. Memories from individuals sessions also remain intact so one may learn from what they experience and what they feel. MDMA weakens psychodynamic differences and brings repressed material into waking consciousness. MDMA melts away the layers of defensiveness and anxiety that impedes treatment. Lester Grinspoon, a professor emeritus of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School said, "The synthetic drug can greatly accelerate the therapeutic process."He also stated, "In one session, people can get past hang-ups that take six months of therapy to untangle." Sue Stevens was severely depressed after her husband died of kidney cancer. She took many antidepressants, and therapy didnt help. Then finally she found a psychologist who was willing to use the illegal drug ecstasy to treat depression and server trauma. In a single session, under the influence of Ecstasy, she said she was finally able to come to grips with her grief. Miss Stevens said, "Somehow I knew my husband was no longer hurting, which made it possible for me to let go." She hasnt taken any antidepressants since. Anecdotal reports from other mental health professionals suggest similar results from Ecstasy.

As one can see that MDMA can truly give one a new level of self understanding helping one to deal with some emotional turmoils that might not be present. I personally think that MDMA/Ecstasy, should be legalized for the use by doctors and/or Therapists as they see fit in their studies to help and bring their patients to a new level of self understanding and a new respect for life. Although the drug may have some negative effects, clearly one can see that the good out weighs the bad.

Orwells book, Animal Farm, is full of satire. This satire is Orwells way of communicating problems and resolutions. The main message in Animal Farm is that power cannot be divided equally. There will never be equality for all. Once power is obtained it is always abused, and power causes all to think as the leader does. Equality does not exist, for it is impossible for everyone to be equal.

There will always be a leader and there will always be followers, and they will never be equal. A society in which all are equal will never exist because people will have different opinions on the way that the society should be run. This arrangement would have worked well enough if it had not been for the disputes between Snowball and Napoleon. These two disagreed at every point where disagreement was possible.

Custom Essays on The Satire in Animal Farm

Snowball and Napoleon are battling for control of the farm, they both want to be the leader because they know that the leader has the most privileges. The animals that are in charge, the pigs, do less work than the other animals. All that year the animals worked like slaves. The title of leader is highly sought after, because the leader tells everyone what to do without actually having to work. The pigs not only do less work but they receive more food. Once again all the rations were reduced, except those of the pigs and the dogs. The fact that the pigs receive more food than the other harder working animals, shows that the farm is full of inequality. This type of governing is wrong, and Orwell wants it to stop. Less power should be given to the leader, so that the leader and his followers can be more equal. Once a group or an individual obtains power, it is impossible to manage it correctly.

The leader will always take advantage of his power. Power causes the leader to make decisions, that will only better himself. ... Boxer was being sent to the knackers. The pigs killed an animal just so that they could make some money. The power led them to this decision, they could kill Boxer, make some money, and no one would ever find out. Everyone has heard about the golden rule whoever has the gold makes the rules. This applies to Animal Farm, whoever is the leader, makes the rules. They had thought the Fifth Commandment was No animal shall drink alcohol, but there were two words that they had forgotten. Actually the Commandment read No animal shall drink alcohol to excess. The pigs changed the rules to better themselves, they totally abused their power. A cruel government does not last long because a rebellion occurs. Rebellions are often sparked by music, because it inspires those that are being oppressed to rise up and overthrow their dictators. Beasts of England had been abolished. The pigs banned Beasts of England because it is a song that promotes rebellions. The pigs abused their power to the full extent, they were selfish and greedy. Orwell wants leaders to do what is best for the whole and not to take advantage of the masses. Gullibility is often the downfall of a fair and just society.

Once power is given to an individual or a group, individual thought ceases to exist. Napoleon was never questioned, his word was the law. If Comrade Napoleon says it, it must be right. This lack of belief of ones own ideas is often the cause of an oppressed society. The animals stupidity allowed the pigs to take advantage of them. So it was agreed without further argument... The animals believed every explanation that Squealer gave, no matter how unrealistic. Agreeing with the leader and never questioning his orders creates a false reality. ...they had no more food than in Joness day... The animals thought that they were better off because the pigs kept telling them they were. But, in reality they had the same amount of food as they had had under human rule, and they worked twice as hard. The stupidity and gullibility of the animals that made this possible. Orwell wants people to learn to think for themselves and to question what is forced upon them. They must also have faith in their own ideas and work together as a whole.

Orwells satire helps to illustrate the hardships that must be endured when power is abused. The goal of this book is to get people to think for themselves and have faith in their beliefs. People will never be completely equal but at least they will not be oppressed.

The "National Park" idea or concept is generally credited to one man, George Catlin (176-187) who traveled expansively among the native people in America through out his lifetime. In 18, George traveled through the Dakotas worrying about the safeguarding of Americas westward expansion, wildlife, and the wilderness. In doing so, he wrote, "by some great protecting policy of government…in a magnificent park…a nations park, containing man and beast, in all the wild and freshness of their natures beauty!" (1) Years later in 1864, Congress donated Yosemite Valley to California for the preservation as a state park. Eight years later, in 187, Congress reserved the spectacular Yellowstone country (Yellowstone National Park) in the Wyoming and Montana territories "as a public park or pleasuring ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people." It wasnt really until August 5, 116, when President Woodrow Wilson signed the "Organic Act" creating the National Park Service (NPS), which was responsible for protecting all 40 national parks and monuments in America. (1)

Another great contribution to the preservation of Americas environment is a man who spent his life to protect and conserve most of the lands resources, John Muir also known as "The Greatest Californian."() Muir began his conservation career in the late 1880s and his death in 114 caused the nation to be committed in his spirit to the wise use of the natural resources we have. Many people believe that in a nutshell, that was his greatness as a human being. All of Muirs writings have moved Presidents in the same way along with Congressmen to take critical action to Americas land use. He wrote in American Forests, "Any fool can destroy trees. They cannot run away; and if they could, they would still be destroyed - - chased and hunted down as long as fun or a dollar could be got out of their bark hides, branching horns, or magnificent bole backbones… Through all the wonderful, eventful centuries since Christs time - - and long before that - - God has cared for these trees… but he cannot save them from fools - - only Uncle Sam can do that."() From this quote, President Cleveland established 1 Forest Reserves totaling more than 1 million acres and the creation of what was to become the U.S. Forest Service. Muir also had a direct hand in the establishment of Yosemite National Park in 180 and two years later, he helped found and was president for life of the Sierra Club, private watchdog of the environment. ()

In todays society, there are many economic interests that threaten the national parks all the time. President Bush has overturned plans that Clinton had made to banish snowmobiles for being driven in the national parks. Nicholas D. Kristof of The New York Times has written that they "conjure an image of rabid rednecks roaring around the geysers, terrifying the elk and leaving even the bison in need of gas masks." (4) Nicholas also said, "Yellowstone will continue to be polluted and degraded, simply to placate the snowmobile industry." (4) Through all this being said, in the early 10s, snowmobiles were almost banned from all national parks due to their noisy motors and the pollution they put out. Now that the industry was running out of time, they magically do something they said couldnt be done. They made a snowmobile that was much more sufficient to the environment still making them legal to ride. As for a final statement in Nicholass article, he wrote, "And as for Yellowstone, the moose and bison should share it each winter with humans even humans on snowmobiles." In 004, President Bush has proposed a budget to accelerate efforts to restore national parks all over the country. In the FY 004 Budget Proposal it said, "This budget proposal reflects a strong commitment to enhance programs benefiting the National Park Service community and partnership efforts as well as the 88 sites within the National Park System. Key budget priorities will help to restore and maintain national parks, strengthen law enforcement programs, and expand volunteer and partnership opportunities." (5) NPS Director Fran Mainella said, "The President understands and appreciates the value of Americas parks and special places." He also included, "This budget is a solid demonstration of his commitment to preserve and protect the cultural and natural resources protected in these treasured places. This budget also brings a new level of awareness to the importance of volunteers and partnership programs, and the role each plays as stewards of these public lands." (5)

On June 1, 00 the press released the headlines, "NPS Director Lauds President Bushs Initiative To Promote Improved Health Through Visiting National Parks." (6) In this article it said, "National Park Service (NPS) Director Fran Mainella applauded the efforts of President Bushs new Healthier US Initiative announced June 1 to promote improved health through the benefits of physical activity and the stress reducing experiences that visiting national parks and participating in park programs provide. As part of the Presidents Comprehensive Fitness Agenda, the Initiative will include an entrance fee-free weekend on June -, 00, to all national park sites across the country." (6) Director Fran Mainella also said, "I am very pleased to join with the President and Interior Secretary Norton in inviting all of America to come out and visit the magnificent natural and cultural resources throughout our country. We share a deep appreciation of the value of national parks and the role they play in the physical fitness and well being of all Americans. The entrance fee-free weekend will be a wonderful opportunity for our visitors to experience national parks and exercise their minds and bodies while uplifting their spirits." (6)

One problem that many U.S. National Parks have a problem with is the tourism that comes to their park every year. Many people are going to parks doubling the tourism for many events that the parks hold, but in some cases, people begin to take advantage of the park at the event. In Moab, Utah, it hosts and annual Jeep Safari around Easter time which has in fact attracted more then 1,500 jeep and sports utility enthusiasts, adding to the already large number of hikers, bicyclists and vehicle drivers who throng to Moab every spring. Maggie Wyatt, manager of federal government land around Moab, says, Our experience is that the Jeep Safari participants themselves are extremely well behaved. They dont want to lose their permit, they want to be able to continue doing this every year; they stay on existing routes that are approved for the Jeep Safari, they caution people not to be driving off those roads. Theyre very diligent about taking along a port-a-potty and picking up trash. Theyre just great. You know, I wish every one would behave that way. (7) She has also included that of the one million people who visit Moabs parklands every year, far too many are careless; "They drive off-road in places where theyre not supposed to. They camp where theyre not supposed to. They tear limbs off trees for firewood." (7) According to the experts, this damage they have created is in fact long lasting.

My belief in the National Park Service is that it should uphold all of the responsibilities to create an environment for all human beings and animals to be able to come together to learn more about what they are and what they do. I think that the situation with the snowmobiles and other touring machines is that that in fact should all be banned because when you are able to use those machines to look around nature, then in a reality, you are cheating. More organizations should be created to protect such endangered animals and also seal off certain parts of the parks, so that no human should be allowed in; only paths might be created with surveillance. As for Presidents in the near future, they should pay more attention to the preservation of our environment and whatever may be inside it.
