The Things They Carried Write my Essay on The Things they Carried
In Tim O Briens, "The Things They Carried" we find ourselves in the place of soldiers whose emotions are heavier than anything that they carry. Emotions to these soldiers are heavy because of the price of war that each deals with day in and day out. The only thing that they cling on to everyday is survival and the will to carry on in the day to day combat, which awaited them. They find that emotions are hard to overcome especially when there is nothing to fight for.
During war ever soldier has his weapon, and their special something that keeps him sane and able to carry on with hope. Not only that but they had to carry their emotions, in a way. For example Kiowa, one of the men that are under Jimmy Crosss command, "Took along his new testament and a pair of moccasins" (pg. ). These items that the soldiers carried kept them from giving into fatal emotions, which plague a mind during war. They had the weight of these emotions, and the burdens that the land gave to them. In essence each man carried much more than that, "they carried the land itself-Vietnam, the place, the soil. They carried the sky. The whole atmosphere" (pg. 15). Every man had to hold up the demands of the war even the land. Emotions were more than just in their head it was all around them, every second. Each emotion was the same challenge it was just a different face.
Every mans emotions weighed greatly on how the soldiers were able to do battle. In Jimmy Crosss case it is Martha, "On occasion he would yell at his men to spread out the column, to keep their eyes open, but then he would slip away into daydreams, just pretending, walking barefoot along the jersey shore, with Martha, carrying nothing" (Pg. ). Jimmy Cross was unable to stay in control of himself in battle. In this situation things become desperate and when there is no order death occurs, like Ted Lavender, who was shot in the head, "right then Ted Lavender was shot in the head on his way back from peeing" (pg. 1). This could have been prevented if Ted Lavender was thinking. Jimmy Cross also feels the strain of guilt for this cause he feels that this was his fault for not watching out for his men, not only that he is responsible for each one of his mans lives, This also adds to every man, as fear sets in. This tragedy could have been avoided if Jimmy Cross was paying better attention to all of his soldiers and his thoughts.
What specifically were these soldiers feelings about the war, " Henry Dobbins asked what moral was. Moral? You know. Moral. Its like with that old TV show- Paladin. Have gun will travel. Henry Dobbins thought about it. Yeah, well, he finally said. I dont see any moral. There it is, man." (pg. 14). Henry Dobbins tells us how the soldiers feel about the war; they have no moral, which means that they dont want to be in the war. " They searched the villages with out knowing what to look for, not caring" (pg. 15). This also tells how the soldiers feel about the war. They really had no care for anything at all. They marched for the sake of marching, none of them had a purpose they just did what they were told. None of these men were there for their lives they were there because they were told they had to, none of the soldiers had a will to fight only a will to march.
In the end each man had emotions and either an ability to control them or lose to them. When they lost they could not center thoughts on the reality of war, all they could think about was the things they missed. Mans true strength and being is tried when they step on the battlefield where emotion is created in the soldier. Some can take what war dishes them and simply others are not cut out to be trained killers, but if a man can overcome his emotions then war can be suited to anyone, at least mentally. War is a calibration of both glory and death, these factors can lead to a certain emotion of a soldier, death can cause pain, glory can give way to an ego, emotions can affect how a soldier is able to cope or how a soldier is able to be successful in the battlefield. In the end the soldier is the beholder to their future they either die or survive.
