The white mans encounters with aborigines were quite peaceful initially, but as settlement took land from the indigenous people, there was resistance. As a result of this, whites were killed. In retaliation, native people were massacred. European diseases such as small pox and influenza spread throughout the indigenous population and caused more deaths than guns and poison.

White Australians began to take over the Aborigines by taking land as they please, denying them access to land, killing, raping, beating and torturing them. By the time of federation, 11 years after the first white man, the official estimate of the Aboriginal Population was 40,000 (down from at least 00,000).

After the days of genocide (killing of a whole people) had passed, the abuse and discrimination did not. Early government policy called for assimilation. Aborigines were forced to accept mainstream Anglo- Saxon culture. The British decided to introduce a selective breeding program to solve the Aboriginal problem by breeding a race of white Aborigines. They wanted to diminish black race by breeding them out. This was the beginning of the Stolen Generation which began in the 10s. It involved children of mixed blood being forcibly removed from their parents and place din institutional or white foster parent care. It is said to have involved approx 100,000 children (approx. 1 in every 1 0 children). The white mind set was that indigenous people needed to be helped, improved or looked after. Children were removed from their mothers at about 4 years of age and then sent to dormitories away from their families. Their future holding them nothing but being sent of to missions for domestic duties at 14 years old. The mistreatment of indigenous people comes to life in Stolen. The 5 main aboriginal characters are clear examples of the result of white Australian cruelty. From young to old, they go through a number of heartbreaking experiences that would have a devastating effect on them for the rest of their lives.

Her spirit had been broken. Unable to stand the pain anymore she had gone mad and is hospitalised. Even the belated appearance of her real family is not sufficient to bring her back from madness.

Young Aborigines were made to perform domestic duties, and were in turn, abused racially, physically, and sexually. If they did not do what they were told, they were beaten and caned. Ruby was one of the most scarifying examples of the brutal, soul-destroying policy.

Young boys were also victims of sexual abuse, in addition to physical and racial. Jimmy (Willy Wajurri) in 'Stolen, was a young boy when he came into the home. He hits back at white society by committing petty crimes. The carefree boy becomes a silent young man with all his anger building, cooped up inside him trying to harden himself to endure lifes blows. He was always in and out of jail. Through a lifetime of being told numerously that his mother was dead, he finally regains hope after he hears of his mother. He journeys to see her and finds out she is dead. Broken in spirit he returns to prison and kills himself.

Aborigines (children) were denied freedom. They couldnt meet their real parents. They were deprived of their essential psychological bond that they should have shared with their families.

Her separation wasnt a disaster, however, when she found out about her real parents, confusion began to take place.

On May 10, 16, many climbers were stuck on top of Mt. Everest in what is looked at as the "deadliest season in Everest history" (Krakauer back cover). People could not get down because the storm was so fierce. Anatoli Boukreev, a Russian guide on Scott Fischers Mountain Madness team, made many rescues which Galen Rowell, a mountain photographer, described as some "of the most amazing rescues in mountaineering history" (Lalime ). Boukreev, co-author of The Climb, has climbed many mountains including "four 8000 meter peeks in 80 days" (Mountain Zone 1). This achievement shows that Boukreev has had a lot of experience with climbing. In May of 16 Boukreev was climbing Everest as a guide. On May 10 the group of climbers on Everest reached the summit and started their trek back down. Boukreev left the summit before the rest of his group and made it down to Camp IV, which many people see as being an inappropriate action for a guide because a guide is supposed to stay with the climbers to help them when it is needed. Later that day as the climbers were making their way down, a huge storm hit and made it difficult to descend. Climbers were stuck on the mountain, and their oxygen was running out. Boukreev made four extreme attempts to save people including his own leader, Fischer. Even though Boukreev saved three lives that day, his actions were looked down upon by others. Boukreev's rescues were very heroic and he was right in coming down the mountain ahead of his clients because he was the only one who had enough strength to climb back up and save them.

Boukreevs decision to descend ahead of his clients was well thought out, it was not just a spur of the moment thing. Before ascending to the summit of Mt. Everest Boukreev had had a talk with Fischer about descending ahead of the clients in order to "set up camp and prepare tea and oxygen for the descending climbers" (Lalime ). Fischers publicist, Jane Bromet, had also announced that it was Fischers plan for Boukreev to descend ahead of the clients (Lalime ). It had been agreed upon that this was the right thing to do so that if the clients needed anything, such as oxygen, Boukreev would be there to help. Critics such as Jon Krakauer, a climber who was also climbing Everest on May 10, feel that Boukreev was wrong in going down the mountain ahead of his clients. Krakauer called Boukreevs actions "extremely questionable behavior for a guide" (Boukreev and DeWalt 1). Krakauer also thought that Boukreev just decided to go back down early so that he could rest. Krakauer failed to note that Boukreev had in fact discussed this plan with Fischer. So he had not just decided last minute to descend because he was tired and needed rest, he descended because that was the plan.

Boukreev and Fischers plan worked because once the storm hit Boukreevs assistance was needed. Boukreev had a feeling that if he had stayed on the mountain with the clients than he would not have been able to help when it was needed. Boukreev states this clearly when he says

I had no clear idea that the weather was a potential problem until I was well on the mountain. My concern, as was Scotts, was that the climbers oxygen supplies were going to run out. I did the job Scott wanted me to do. If I had been farther up the mountain when the full force of the storm hit, I think it is likely I would have died with the clients. I honestly do. I am not a superman. In that weather, we all could possibly have died.(Boukreev and DeWalt 1).

Critics may say that if Boukreev had been on the mountain leading the clients than he would have been there in the first place to offer his help and lead them in the right direction. However, Boukreev knew that if he had gone down any later he would have died. If he had gone down any later than there would have been no one left to save the clients because Boukreev was the only one who was there that could help.

Boukreev knew that if he descended rapidly, like planned, then he would have enough strength to go back up and supply the climbers with oxygen and hot tea (Boukreev and DeWalt 154). This plan worked because when the people were in danger Boukreev was the only one strong enough to go back up and help. He mentions how when he asked the people who were at camp, such as the members on Rob Hall's expedition team, they "were either asleep, unable or unwilling to lend support" (Boukreev and DeWalt 188). There would have been no one around to save the clients who were in need of help if Boukreev hadnt descended ahead of the group. Everyone was weak from climbing through the storm but Boukreev was the only one who had enough strength to climb.

Boukreev was there in the time of need. Boukreev didnt just go up once that day in attempt to save people, he went up four times, the fourth attempt being for Fischer. He was unable to save Fischers life but he managed to save three others that day; Charlotte Fox, Tim Madsen, and Sandy Hill Pittman, all of whom were on Fischers team. If Boukreev had been on up the mountain with the rest of his team he might have died, but because he and Fischer had planned for him to descend ahead he was there when the clients needed him the most, and that makes his actions honorable.

Each day in the United States more than three children die as a result of child abuse. The beginning of the short story, The Test, by Angelica Gibbs provokes the readers attention through early descriptive lines like, "When they found the boulevard they found it crowded with cars headed for the beaches." Pg 115 Not only does this establish the colour of the main characters but it establishes the racist attitude of the American population in whole and is symbolic of the way America was during the civil war and the white population way of thinking even only back as far as 140 when this story was set. Other lines that enforce the theme of racism are when the instructor says to Marian, "Old enough to have quite a flock of Piccaninnies, eh." This then shows us that the instructor is racist.

The three main characters in this short story are Marian, Mrs Ericson and the driving instructor. Marian is a black young woman and is a wonderful worker who works very hard. This is very evident when Mrs Ericson and Marian are talking and Mrs Ericson exclaims, "Oh Marian, if I could only pay you half of what youre worth!" Marian is well educated she got a College degree the year before which takes the driving instructor by surprise. We are encouraged to like Marian and respect her for what she is mainly through the dialogue between Mrs Ericson and herself. Pg 115-116

Mrs Ericson is a very sweet, kind and fun-loving person she is anything but racist. She employs Marian as a sort of maid to clean and look after the children. She shows her great sense of thankfulness to Marian when she is said to have wondered for the thousandth time, "How the house had ever managed to get along without her." She continually compliments Marian and her driving and this shows us her sweet and kind personality. A lot of chit chat and warm fuzzy talk between Marian and Mrs Ericson which reveals their relationship. Through dialogue we find out about Mrs Ericsons warm nature and excellent complimentary attitude towards Marian. Pg 115

The plot in the story starts off with Mrs Ericson having a high confidence in Marian and she expresses this through speech like, "You drive beautifully Marian." Then after the driving inspectors have turned up and Mrs Ericson leaves the racism starts. Lines that include the words, "Swanee River," and "Piccaninnies," (Pg 116) we see the racism from the driving instructors. Marian gets so angry she yells at the driving instructor and therefore fails the test. The plot is straight forward, easy to follow and travels at a quick speed.

The Language is very descriptive and all information is concise and straight forward. Some of the very descriptive language comes at the start when we are first meeting the characters. The Car is the only main setting of the story. The car is firstly being driven to Marian to the driving test before she drives in the actual driving test. The car in my opinion is symbolic of slavery as strange as it may seem. Towards the middle of the story a description of Marian in the car is, "Marians hands tightened on the wheel." (Pg 116) I thought it was like she was stuck in this car almost stuck in hell for these few minutes of the driving test like her forefathers were stuck in slavery in Africa and in America all those years ago.

Virginia had been experiencing social problems with indentured servants, due to the fact that these servants became free after a period of years and could not become successful planters. "Up until the 1640s the labor force in Virginia was mainly composed of white servants. But as the conditions got harder, servants coming to the colony declined. The prestige that went with being Christian instead of heathen could thus be reserved normally for the free and white."(Morgan ) To more advancely protect their "Christian" rights they often wrote laws such as, "In 1680 it was prescribed thirty lashes on the bare back if any Negro or other slave shall presume to lift up his hand in opposition against any Christian."(Morgan 1) These "rights" and "laws" are a direct attempt to place the white man above all slaves and explain that "they" should be the masters and not the servants.

(Morgan 6) Slavery was brought to Virginia by choice. At first slavery was at a higher cost then indentured servants but later on "it became the more beneficial." (Morgan ) To be "Christian" was to be right, as the colonist saw it, but once slaves figured that this was a ticket to a more free life the white man made it harder for slaves to become Christians. They "punished" slaves for becoming Christian "The same act that ordered the dismemberment of unruly slaves, cause slaves who turned Christians to forfeit any property or earnings, they had earned through special or extra work, to the church, which would then sell the property or earning (pigs, horses, cattle, clothes ext.) then give the earning to the poor whites. This was highly effective for dissociating the two."(Morgan ) With the perception of a free life, removed by the white man, slaves, in the eyes of a lazy, prejudice man, made the ultimate choice to exploit for work.

The flu can incapacitate a human for several weeks with various symptoms such as bodily soreness, fever, bronchial complications, and even pneumonia. But while these conditions can be painful and frightening, we are usually confident that proper medication and rest will take care of the matter.

However there is a much more severe and indiscriminate tyrant, with enormous corrupting influence, capable of infiltrating all of civilization. The Black Death was a disease that spread all over Europe. It was highly unpleasant and took only three or four days to kill you. People come to the worship service wanting to be served a portion of Scripture and go home and do nothing with it.

B. If you walked into this church today with pride in your heart, and you refused to humble yourself toward God, you are going to leave with no more spiritual potential than you came with.

Times can and will change, people can and will change, and in Charles Dickenss A Christmas Carol, Ebenezer Scrooge could and did change. In the beginning of the tale, we see him as a cruel, miserly and insensitive old man and after he has his dreams, he is no longer that, but a caring, sympathetic and generous man instead.

In the first stave of the story, Scrooges character was revealed as unkind, uncharitable and overall cruel. He refuses to heat his own office, much less that of his impoverished yet hard working clerk and even goes so far as to try and deny him a Christmas break, stating that his clerk was trying to rob him of the wages he would dole out for the day of vacation. This shows us that he is miserly and cruel, typically what we would call cheap. When the association of men comes looking for donations to help the unfortunate, he not only says no, he goes so far as to say they should decrease the excess population and do it quickly. He feels no qualms or inner guilt for saying such a heartless thing, but feels triumphant and pleased. When his beloved sisters child invites him to his familys Christmas dinner, he rejected the offer in a less than gracious fashion, ignoring his nephews earnest pleads and overtures of friendship and love.[p.4] Scrooge shows no compassion or caring in any of the scenarios stated. He cares not for those surrounding him or those who try to be good to him, but cares only for his financial well being.

We begin to see the transformation in Stave Two when the first ghost, the Ghost of Christmas Past, takes Scrooge back to his boyhood school. The ghost shows him the Christmas where his sister Fan came to bring him home. It is the first time that we see any positive emotion in Scrooge and he begins to babble about all of the good memories from that time in his life. The Ghost of Christmas Past also takes him to his first employers building. He fondly recounts the memories of working there and the parties that Old Fezziwig, as he is called, gave to bring joy. Scrooge defends the parties to the Ghost of Christmas Past; saying that Fezziwig had the power to make his workers either miserable or joyous and he chose the former. He praised Fezziwig for his effort and went so far as to admit that "the happiness he gave is as great as if it cost a fortune."[p.6] The ghost also takes him back to his time with his love, Bess. They are having a disagreement about whether Scrooge had changed from a loving, caring person to a financially driven cold man. Scrooge is greatly upset by seeing Bess leave him once again and begs the ghost to take him home and show him no more.[p.8] The cold shell that was formed so many years around Ebenezer Scrooge is beginning to fall away.

In Stave , Scrooge is still changing. He begins questioning why so many are without common necessaries and common comforts and blames the Ghost of Christmas Present for this deprivation.[p.6] When the ghost takes him to the Cratchit residency, he looks upon the joy they share in simply being together and begins to sympathize with his over worked clerk. His heart aches at the probable demise of Tiny Tim and he demands the sparing of the child.[p.40] Not long after questioning the fate of Tiny Tim, Bob thankfully toasts to Scrooge. Scrooge is flattered until Mrs. Cratchit breaks in, angrily ranting about his miserliness. Scrooge is greatly affected by his Christmas visit to the Cratchits. They are laughing about his death and the way he saved every penny. Scrooge is deeply saddened by the fact that the only mourners to attend his funeral were to be there simply out of need for food.[p.5] The ghost then takes him to a scene where robbers are getting items appraised from his home. The thieves show no remorse and joke over him being there while they ransacked his house. This makes him fearful and anxious about what might happen. He vows to be a better man and be more generous to all.[p.6]

When he wakes up that morning, he is delighted to be alive. He bubbles over with good intentions and checks to make sure all is as it was when he fell asleep. The first thing he does is order a huge turkey to be taken to the Cratchit home on Christmas morning.[p.64] This shows his change perfectly. Not only is he happy that Bob is sharing time with his family, he is willing to supplement the material aspect of it and receive no recognition. The mere thought of helping the Cratchits makes him giddy. He also runs into one of the men that were collecting funds for the needy and makes a generous donation to them.[p.66] The man is very surprised and all that Scrooge can do is laugh. To his nephews is where Scrooge goes next. He wants to begin a relationship with Fred and his wife and makes an answer to Freds previous question about being friends after all. Among many other things, Scrooge raises Bobs salary and offers to help support the Cratchits.

Scrooge made a one hundred percent turn around. He is, at the end of the story, as kind and as generous as any man could be expected to be, as avidly interested in his fellow mans welfare as he was previously in his bank account, as happy and giddy as a small child in a first snow. As was the stated theory earlier, times can and do change, people can and do change, but Scrooge could and did change.
