The Black Death was a disease that spread all over Europe. It was highly unpleasant and took only three or four days to kill you. Most importantly, it was the most contagious or wide spread disease of the time. The Black Death killed one third of Europes population between 147 and 151. Historians believe that there were two different plagues at this time. One of these plagues was called the Bubonic plague, this is when the fleas on the backs of rats which were infected with this disease jumped onto a person and infected the person. This disease did not spread as much in the cold and the other plague as the pneumonic plague which was extremely deadly.

The most common belief was that the plague had been sent by God and that it was his punishment for the sins people had committed. Another belief was that people thought the position of the planets caused the terrible disease. The actual reason why it was spread is because "fleas which had fed on the blood of a rat which had the disease. Plague bacteria spread inside the flea, building up a blockage in its digestive system. When the flea fed again, on a human, the blockage forced blood back in to the bite, along with the plague bacteria." This is what it says in The Great Plague Book. The first signs of illness were that the person with the plague would have a very high temperature, the person would start to be sick and the person would get pains in their muscles and buboes would start to appear which filled up with pus and became very painful

It explains this in The Medieval descriptions of the plague

"a) Apostumes and carbuncles on the armpits and the groin. From this, one died within a few days." Buy The Black Death term paper

"b) The emergence of certain tumours in the groin or armpits, some of which grew as large as a common apple. Black spots appeared on the arm and on the thigh."

The other plague was the pneumonic plague. The symptoms of this plague are the persons lungs get infected and they start to cough up blood and the person sprays germs every time they breathe out. It explains this in The Medieval descriptions of the plague.

"a) Continuous fever and spitting of blood. Men suffer in their lungs and breathing, and whoever has been corrupted cannot live beyond two or three days."

"b) Anyone who is infected by it dies, all who see him in his sickness follow thither." This explains that it is spread very easily.

70% of the people who caught the bubonic plague died, it was quite nasty and 0+% of the people who caught the pneumonic plague died so the pneumonic plague was an extremely deadly plague. The Black Death spread very quickly especially because of over sea trades to different countrys which made it spread quickly and easily. Rats got aboard ships and things to infect people there or to spread it by going out into that country. The Black Death spread across Europe because of mainly one thing POOR HYGEINE. The hygiene in those days was terrible. They did not have any medicine so they could not cure the people with the plague. People lived very close together. People, in those days, threw their waste out of the window, now how disgusting is that? They even had urine cups and once they had filled it to the top out of the window it went and that is the reason why the Black Death spread, because of extremely poor hygiene.

Desperate plague victims tried many different cures

Roasted onions filled with treacle and pepper made into a poultice,

Dried toads laid on buboes (comes from the bubonic plague) to draw out the poison and a mixture of onions, cloves, garlic, lemons and vinegar.

A recipe from that time says "To cure plague, take two handfuls and rue and sixty walnuts beaten small, then use as a poultice to draw out the poison." Another recipe was "To cure the plague, hold a live chicken against the plague sores until the bird dies.

Here is a paragraph from the book 'A Tudor Medicine Chest "If you saw dark swelling called 'buboes around the arm-pits, you knew you had the plague. Doctors pierced buboes with a long-handled cautery, to try to destroy the poison. The handle meant they didnt have to get too close to the highly infectious patient. Priests nervously gave holy water and wafers to dying victims with a dispenser which gad a long handle for the same purpose. A merchant staggers into the surgery and tears open his tunic. Pus-filled, purple boils cover his swollen armpits. Snatching a long-handled cautery from the medicine chest, the surgeon heats it in the fire. At arms length he presses the hot tip against a bubo which explodes with a hiss." This explains how people thought they could cure the person with the plague and how gruesome it was, what kind of tools they used to try and cure the plague and how scared people were of getting the plague. During the time of the Black Death, many people died. It says in The Contrasts and Connections History Book "158 So many people died that bodies were left unburied around the streets." In England, the population went right down during the time of the Black Death and it was very hard to get food because farmers would be dead as it says in The Contrasts and Connections History Book "The Black Death killed so many villeins that the Lord manor could not get enough people to live and work on his estates. Some villages were deserted. In other places many villeins stopped doing labour services for the lord and paid low rents instead. The villeins became free on their estates the lords had to employ labours on their estates and pay them high wages." Some people were starved to death and there were even rumours of cannibalism (People eating each other.)
