The story "Sonnys Blues" illustrate the lives of two brothers, narrated by the oldest brother, who was never given a name or a nickname. (P 5)When the two of them get back to Harlem, the narrator felt "… that I was simply bringing him back into the danger he had almost died trying to escape". (P 46)

As soon as the cab ride home to Harlem and the "…cab moved uptown… we (Sonny and the narrator) both were seeking through our separate cab windows was a part of ourselves which had been left behind". The narrator just "…simply couldnt see why on earth he wants to spend his time hanging around nightclubs, clowning around on bandstands, while people pushed each other around a dance floor."
