Listening

The main components in good listening are paying attention and seeking to understand the other person. Perhaps the greatest obstacle to a good dialogue comes from one person trying desperately to be heard without listening, validating and responding to what the other person feels is important. When both people want to be heard and neither is listening, it is difficult to achieve the give and take of a good dialogue. "This you know, my beloved brethren. But let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger." james 11 NAS In this brochure, you will learn the techniques and process for promoting a healthy dialogue. However, more important than techniques and process is having a good heart dealing with ones selfishness and treating others with respect. "Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind let each of you regard one another as more important than himself; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others." Phil. &4NAS When the heart and values are in place, techniques will help a person be more competent in the process of communication. It is important that listeners give some feedback (reflective listening) so the speakers know they are being heard. Feedback includes eye contact and positive body language responses, such as appropriate facial expressions, nods and posture. On the opposite page, you will see examples of Reflective Listening, which is a verbal response to the message.

Validating

After Reflective Listening comes Validation. Validation shows that the other persons perspective and experience are important to you, and it expresses respect for the other persons perspective and experience. Jesus was validated by God the Father when he started his ministry. He believed he was the son of God. "And after being baptized, Jesus went up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him, and behold a voice out of the heavens, saying, 'This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." Matthew 16, 17 NAS You may say, "What if I didnt agree with what was said? What if she/he was wrong? The house wasnt that messy. The kids were not looking like orphans. He/she was overreacting! Your view may contradict the other persons view of a situation. Validation is an affirmation of a subjective reality, not an objective reality. It communicates that you value and care about the person with whom you are communicating. It does not mean you agree with their perspective, but that you are willing to get close enough to understand and care about them. Your validation empowers the other person to keep sending their message, where invalidation frustrates and invites him/her to feel powerless or worthless. In a dialogue both people need to listen, validate, and respond, so there is a mutual respect. Help with essay on Developing An Ear, Heart, and Follow Through

Responding

After a message has been reflected and validated, the listener needs to give a response. "What use is it, my brethren, if a man says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them, 'Go in peace, be warmed and be filled, and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself. James 14-17 NAS. Listening is not enough; you have to act on what you heard! What will you do about what you have heard? You may want your side told and heard before you feel ready to respond and make a commitment. At this point you need to give an honest and respectful response to come to a resolution or begin working on a resolution. Responding is based on having a good heart and healthy values. You must care how you affect the other person. Without defending or justifying yourself, take responsibility for your part in the relationship through your response. Often, responses are not honest. People placate and please just to avoid conflict, rather than dialoguing to get a resolution that both can live with. Responding communicates good will and helps define the solution. Responding says, "I value you" and allows the listener to send a message back that he/she cares and wants a relationship; that he/she is willing to do his/her part in the relationship to make it work.

Summary

Reflective listening is paraphrasing, describing or summarizing what the other person is saying.

At first , this may seem mechanical and phony but it will become natural with practice. Following is an example of reflective listening

(Wife is at a meeting and expects her husband to have things in order and their children in bed before she comes home.)

•(Message sent)I came home last night and this place was a mess. Nothing was picked up, the living room was a man trap and the kids looked like orphans.

•(Message reflected)You were pretty upset last night over the chaos in our house when you got home.

Reflecting is receiving the message, acknowledging that you have heard it, and waiting to see if you heard it right. There are three things to look for and reflect back

•Listen for the content of what was said - the facts or information given.

•Reflect the emotional message - more difficult to do but extremely helpful - (Emotion reflected ) You felt imposed upon by the mess and chaos in the house when you returned home and were very frustrated with me.

•Listen for the desire and reflect it back. (Desire reflected) You wanted the house to be in order and the children in bed when you came home last night.

Validation is making the other persons perspectives and experience important to you.

•(Validation) You expected the house to be cleaned up & the kids to be in bed when you got home. I can see how you feel frustrated."

Responding is acting on what you heard, while communicating good will.

•(Response) "I know when you got home you felt imposed upon and responsible to finish cleaning the house and putting the kids to bed. I dont want to put more work on you. This is my responsibility and I will work harder on eliminating chaos in the house. May I explain to you why I did not have these things done?

CHILDRENS

Children Literature at times can be subversive, meaning that its values are not always those of the conventional adult world (5) The great subversive works of childrens literature suggest that there are other views of human life besides those of the shopping mall and the corporation. They mock current assumptions and express the imaginative, unconventional, noncommerical view of the world in its simpliest and purest form. They appeal to the imaginative, questioning, rebellious child within all of us, renew our instinctive energy, and act as a force of change (6) This appeal to the imagination of all ages is exactly why childrens literature cannot be classified as literature for only children. There is no actual prerequisite , unless a picture book for toddlers. Having a work that is shorter or if possible to say, simpler, does not mean it is less well written. Even stating that childrens literature is written for children causes problems. The intentions of the author many be different to that of the publishers (6 intro to lit page 4)

Using the term read by children also creates a similar problem. Many books are not read by children and are much more appreciated by adults. This is seen by books such as The Hobbit. Here we have a text that if read by children , is most probably not done voluntarily on the part of the child. This creates important implications in studying childrens literature.

JM Barries book, Peter Pan, afterall is a satirical work looking at contemporary domestic life and a manifesto for the claims of imagination against rationality.(7) It is also said that the sources to make childrens texts such as fairytales, legends and myths can be used to express whatever is muted, suppressed, or compromised in mainstream culture. For example, folklore may tell us that children already know some of the secrets of adult life of which they are supposed to be ignorant; or it may suggest that people we usually despise and overlook have unsuspected powersCheap custom writing service can write essays on i dont think so

"The War Within Us"

In his article " From The Content Of Our Character," writer Shelby Steele refers to the many problems black Americans are faced with, as he reflects on his own struggle to individualize his identity growing up as a black man. Steele points out that movements such as "black power" did nothing more than confirm he was in fact black and that alone became his identity. He reveals how black Americans have used their blackness to become victims in a society of racists. Steele concludes that today black Americans have the same opportunities as white Americans and it is their choice to embrace these opportunities.

For example, Steele illustrates though the black power movement did confirm his blackness, it did nothing to individualize his identity as a black man. I agree that movements such as black power and the Black Panther Party did acknowledge black Americans for the color of their skin and their right for equality. The age of the "Negro" or the more derogatory words were over. Black was beautiful now and black was power. Although what movements like black power instilled was a great deal of racism in blacks towards whites. These organizations did nothing more than eliminate one problem and create another. So the tables are turned and we are right back where we started from. Living in the problem instead of finding a solution.

Furthermore, the author shows how black Americans chose to remain victims of racism rather than pursuing the many opportunities available to them. Why choose to stay in the victim role and expect all opportunities to be handed to you on a silver platter? This is a much easier, Cheap Custom Essays on "The War Within Us"

softer role as opposed to taking a risk and failing. As victims we can say "Its all your fault, you owe me". To step outside of this comfort zone is to take responsibility for your own actions. If you fail you have no one to blame other than yourself. At 40 years old, I was stuck in a dead end job that I was totally burned out on. My own insecurities kept me stuck. I did not believe in myself enough to step out of my comfort zone and take a risk. Had I not finally taken that risk, I would still be stuck in that dead end job. I believe that black Americans still stuck in the victim role manifest their own insecurities, rather than having faith that all Americans, regardless of race, can individually seek out the same opportunities.

The fact that the American government has developed numerous programs that address racial discrimination is not enough. Many of such programs have worked but as many more have not. I agree, we need to address this issue on an individualized level. We need to succeed individually as well as succeed as a whole nation. I believe that whatever can work for a white man can work for a black man and that together, undivided, we can find a solution. By American leaders keeping their focus on doing more for blacks and trying to repay them for the past, they are in fact enabling them to remain victims, weakening them even more.

Growing up in America being black entailed facing many serious problems, racial discrimination being one of them. With movements such as black power and the Black Panther Party, black Americans began to identify themselves through their blackness, loosing all sense of an individual identity. To be black no personal initiative is necessary, one needs only to be black. Using black as your sense of identity portrays a victimized identity and perhaps limits your sense of opportunities. Black Americans can continue playing the victim role or they can take a risk and step out of their blackness and individually seize the many opportunities

available, allowing the war within us to die.
