"The War Within Us"

In his article " From The Content Of Our Character," writer Shelby Steele refers to the many problems black Americans are faced with, as he reflects on his own struggle to individualize his identity growing up as a black man. Steele points out that movements such as "black power" did nothing more than confirm he was in fact black and that alone became his identity. He reveals how black Americans have used their blackness to become victims in a society of racists. Steele concludes that today black Americans have the same opportunities as white Americans and it is their choice to embrace these opportunities.

For example, Steele illustrates though the black power movement did confirm his blackness, it did nothing to individualize his identity as a black man. I agree that movements such as black power and the Black Panther Party did acknowledge black Americans for the color of their skin and their right for equality. The age of the "Negro" or the more derogatory words were over. Black was beautiful now and black was power. Although what movements like black power instilled was a great deal of racism in blacks towards whites. These organizations did nothing more than eliminate one problem and create another. So the tables are turned and we are right back where we started from. Living in the problem instead of finding a solution.

Furthermore, the author shows how black Americans chose to remain victims of racism rather than pursuing the many opportunities available to them. Why choose to stay in the victim role and expect all opportunities to be handed to you on a silver platter? This is a much easier, Cheap Custom Essays on "The War Within Us"

softer role as opposed to taking a risk and failing. As victims we can say "Its all your fault, you owe me". To step outside of this comfort zone is to take responsibility for your own actions. If you fail you have no one to blame other than yourself. At 40 years old, I was stuck in a dead end job that I was totally burned out on. My own insecurities kept me stuck. I did not believe in myself enough to step out of my comfort zone and take a risk. Had I not finally taken that risk, I would still be stuck in that dead end job. I believe that black Americans still stuck in the victim role manifest their own insecurities, rather than having faith that all Americans, regardless of race, can individually seek out the same opportunities.

The fact that the American government has developed numerous programs that address racial discrimination is not enough. Many of such programs have worked but as many more have not. I agree, we need to address this issue on an individualized level. We need to succeed individually as well as succeed as a whole nation. I believe that whatever can work for a white man can work for a black man and that together, undivided, we can find a solution. By American leaders keeping their focus on doing more for blacks and trying to repay them for the past, they are in fact enabling them to remain victims, weakening them even more.

Growing up in America being black entailed facing many serious problems, racial discrimination being one of them. With movements such as black power and the Black Panther Party, black Americans began to identify themselves through their blackness, loosing all sense of an individual identity. To be black no personal initiative is necessary, one needs only to be black. Using black as your sense of identity portrays a victimized identity and perhaps limits your sense of opportunities. Black Americans can continue playing the victim role or they can take a risk and step out of their blackness and individually seize the many opportunities

available, allowing the war within us to die.
