Elvis and company then signs a contract with Hank Snow Attractions, which is equally shared between Colonel Parker and Hank Snow. Later in 155, Elvis signs a contract with RCA Records and his Sun contract is bought out. The going price for Elvis was forty thousand dollars with a five thousand-dollar bonus for Elvis. Heartbreak Hotel was the first single under RCA. Three weeks after being released, it would sell three hundred thousand copies, go number one on Billboards pop singles, go number one in the country chart, and hit five on the R&B charts. It was Elvis first record to sell over one million copies, giving him his first gold award. Later in 56, Elvis releases his first album, Elvis Presley. Once again, he hits the top of the pop charts and stays there for ten weeks. Scotty, Bill, and DJ are with him as he plays Hound Dog on The Milton Berle Show. This song is given in a very sensuous style causing great controversy among the press and some adult viewers. This just adds to his unstoppable popularity. This is the beginning of those morally concerned parents and parts of the religious community that cant stand the shaking hips or black sound from a white man.

With his albums selling millions and movies doing well, Elvis started to be known as the King. Ed Sullivan saw the popularity as well as the controversy surrounding the Berle appearance that he offered Elvis a contract. A price is set at fifty thousand dollars for three appearances. With the rise of the King, Tupelo proclaimed there would an Elvis Presley Day. He returned to perform two shows on the very stage he started his career. The town and family also opened his birth house to the public for tours. With the fame, also came its perks. There were all kinds of souvenir merchandise; lipstick, shirts, shoes, stuffed hound dogs, and of course T-shirts. The front page of the Wall Street Journal reported that over the course of a few months Elvis merchandise had over million dollars in sales. With the fame also came the money, which is why in 157 Elvis bought Graceland Mansion for himself and his family. The fame didnt stay in the United States, though. In 157, he did four shows in Canada, and they were bootlegging his records in Stalingrad. But, all this fun was coming to an end, at the end of 57 Elvis received his draft notice. He was a true patriot; a famous musician serving his country. He wouldnt hit the music scene again until 166. He came back to be in his twenty-second movie and formally propose to Priscilla. On May 1, 167 Elvis and Priscilla are married at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in front of friends and family. Exactly nine months after their marriage, Elvis and Priscilla give birth to Lisa Marie. The 68 Special was filmed a few months later to talk about how Elvis has changed music forever.

All of the fame and money doesnt always mean happiness, in May of 17 Priscilla and Elvis split. He started seriously dating Linda Thompson until late 176 when they split and he dated Ginger Alden until his death. Throughout his career, Elvis made thirty-three movies, and dozens of albums that were nearly always successful. It is no doubt that he had a huge affect on Western culture. He sang, danced, shook those famous hips, and reduced the female fans to fainting. By the end of his career, Elvis had the backing of nearly the whole world and millions of fans.

Elvis death is a mystery to nearly everyone. Most people are sure hes dead, but I can honestly say I think that nearly everyone has that doubt that he could still be alive. The mystery to his death gives way to all kinds of concoctions. The ones I found the most believable are as follows the gravesite, the means, and Chiros Book of Numbers. The gravesite sports the wrong spelling of Elvis middle name, which his father would have never let happen. Aron, Elvis middle name, was misspelled on his birth certificate as well and his father went to great lengths to get it corrected. It had something to do with his stillborn brothers middle name, Garon. Elvis current gravesite is between his father and grandma, not next to his mother, which he requested. So, it is theorized he wouldnt tempt fate by putting his real name on the stone or violate the ground next to his mother until he was ready to be there. The means came from Elvis pharmaceutical knowledge as well as his founder Colonel Parkers knowledge of creating new identities. Elvis knew enough about drugs that he could self-administer drugs that could create a deathlike state. Colonel Parker had to create a new identity for himself, he was an illegal alien from Holland. He made a completely new identity for himself, and could have done the same for Elvis. Chiros Book of Numbers is by far the most interesting. Elvis had a fascination with numerology - an interest he fed by reading Chiros Book of Numbers. The theory that the King orchestrated his death is further supported when considering the significance of the date of his alleged death. The date in question is August 16,177. By adding the numbers in the date, 8, 16, and 177, you get 001. This is the title of Elvis favorite movie in which the hero plans his immortality in the bathroom. Elvis spent a considerable amount of time doing the same planning his afterlife on the john. Elvis spent so much time in the bathroom that he had his toilet converted into a reclining comfy chair. Coincidentally, the bathroom is also where Elviss body was reportedly found.

Given Elviss religious affiliation (Christianity), he had a fascination with things that come in threes such as the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The sum of the digits from his favorite film (+0+0+1) is three. Lets consider the triad of the repetition of the number 4. 001 (favorite film) less 177 (year of death) is 4. The two numbers from the day of death (8/16) when added up equal 4. The sum of the digits in the year of death (1++7+7) also equals 4. That is occurrences of the number 4 which is divisible by , and when divided by three the result, 8 has a perfect cubed root (xx=8).

Elvis loved numerology, and when you consider the numeric significance of the date of his alleged death, it is clear that if indeed he did plan to fake his death, he could not have chosen a better date.

The death of Elvis came as a great shock to nearly everyone, but I feel Elvis is dead, and it was better that he went out with a bang instead of a fizzle. That is how I feel he would have wanted it and that is the best way for it to happen. The only odd thing about his whole death is the fact that no one has collected on his life insurance policy.

Two schools forged as one team. Birmingham Unified is exactly that. On the ice and off, the boys proved themselves with high goals and hard work. "At the beginning of the year, the team really didnt know our potential, so we set high goals not knowing how we would turn out," Junior Mike Barrett said.

All the boys agreed that the team wouldnt have survived this far without their new coaches. Head coach Steve McIntyre, and assistant coaches Jason Belhart and Matt Mosier pushed the team to their highest potential. In McIntyres first year with the team, his influence, support and knowledge earned him respect and admiration from his players. "He [McIntyre] took a new team and got us off to the best start that I can remember this team having, putting Birmingham Unified back on the map," senior Ryan Zimberg said.

With almost the entire defensive line played by seniors, the team was extremely powerful on the defensive end. Offensively, the team gained speed and strength. Birmingham Unified won three 10-0 shutout games this season against Lake Orion, Allen Park Cabrini and Avondale. In the Lake Orion game, Ryan Zimberg scored goals for B.U., while Jeff Berkowitz and Chris Hebert each scored one. In the Avondale game, Chris Hebert made goals, and Mike Barrett scored one. Shutouts werent possible without defensive players like senior Brian Svik, and Seaholm captains, seniors Chris Martini and Mike Valant, as well as goalies, senior Sean Garvey and junior Ryan Stein. "This year we are using the systems weve been taught and use each other as a team to beat our opponent," junior Mike Barrett said.

Despite the rival between Groves and Seaholm, the boys put their differences aside and formed one whole team, rather than two sides. Team bonding played a big role in how well the team preformed on the ice. Every Saturday, the boys had a team luncheon at a players house. This was for the guys to eat, talk, watch past game tapes and prepare for the up coming game that night. "The team has bonded in a way I have never seen before, which is why I think we are doing so well. We are now able to play as a team, rather than individuals," sophomore Jeff Berkowitz said.

Queen Elizabeth I Queen of the Sea

Queen Elizabeth I created the foundation for Englands success in sea power and trade. She created the illusion of strength by concealing her emotions and making deliberate choices on her behalf. One such alternative was not marrying. Although living a single life was frowned upon, especially among royalty, it was a potent factor in her reign. Because she did not have to worry about a husband or family, Elizabeth was free to focus on her country and its people. Queen Elizabeth and England thrived during the Age of Exploration seizing new opportunities, gaining knowledge and seeking power in the New World. During this period, England successfully fought against Spains attempt to spread Catholicism throughout Britain and overthrow its queen during the Spanish Armada.

Queen Elizabeth promoted exploration in the New World. She aided the explorers with funds and support. She encouraged them to challenge Spain and Portugal on trade and conquest. She sponsored Sir Francis Drake in his three-year voyage in which he circumnavigated the globe. Drake raided Spanish ports, stole great amounts of treasure and returned to England a national hero. Her admiration of Sir Walter Raleigh came as a result of his success in exploration. Raleigh honored his queen by naming the colony Virginia after Queen Elizabeth I, "The Virgin Queen." Drake, Raleigh and all of the men who explored the New World during the Age of Exploration were known as "sea dogs."

The experiences gained by the British during the Age of Exploration prepared them for their next challenge. The execution of Mary Queen of Scots led to Philip of Spains rule. Philip had a few reasons to dislike Queen Elizabeth I. Firstly, she refused to marry him after a wedding was arranged for the two. Secondly, Queen Elizabeth I aided the Netherlands with militia and funds against Spain. Philip was convinced that English Catholics would welcome his rule and was determined to convert the British and overrule Elizabeth. The queen knew Philip would soon attack. The English prepared by raiding Spanish fleets. Sir Francis Drake raided Cadiz and in doing so, he destroyed supplies and stole booty from the Spanish galleons. On July 1, 1588, one hundred and thirty Spanish ships entered the English Channel against thirty-four English ships, many of which were fireboats. The commander of the English fleet did the unthinkable by using unmanned fireboats, loaded with explosives, to defeat the Spanish. Order Custom Essay on Queen Elizabeth I: her influence on trade

Englands victory over Spain had two important results. It guaranteed that England could remain independent and Protestant two major factors for England. England proved that it could defend itself, and Queen Elizabeth I worked tirelessly to keep its defense strong. Before the Spanish Armada, England was not as powerful as Spain. Because of Queen Elizabeths will, determination and her ability to keep the people of England motivated, she established her position in the history of Englands rule and more importantly Englands position as a major player in European politics. If it were not for Queen Elizabeth Is cunning defeat of the Spanish, England may not have become a major partner in world-class sea and land trade.

Queen Elizabeth Is reign was focused and beneficial for England. She assisted and established the groundwork of Englands accomplishments. Queen Elizabeths endeavors were invaluable to the people of England who looked to her as a mother. After her death, the entire country went into mourning. The time of her rule is known as the "Age of Elizabeth."

Romance in literature, analysing Whitman

If you order your research paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Romance in literature, analysing Whitman. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Romance in literature, analysing Whitman, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Romance in literature, analysing Whitman paper at affordable prices!

Romantic literature, particularly poetry, often sees man in communication with natural world, rather than with other men. It trusts insticts, the emotions and the heart rather than reason, intellect and head. "The romantic believes and trusts only himself, believing that society and civilization corrupt humanitys natural innocence and instinct for good". (English Literature-Martin Stephen .0)

John Keats in his poems is captured by love, truth and beauty. "It appears to suggest that the whole meaning of life can be summed up by the definition and expression of what is beautiful, and that the real truth and real beauty are the same thing, where one is to be found, so will the other." (English Literature, M.S. 5). Keats is trying to say that beauty is what life has to offer, and search for it should be the spiritual aim of all men. Like he said in his poem Ode on a Grecian Urn "Beauty is truth-truth is beauty-that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know". However, one of the famous philosophers gave very good definition of love, stating that Love is scariness to lose someone or something. If we think little bit deeper about this definition, (which I believe is the best one I ever heard), when are we really afraid that we are going to lose someone? It is when person is about to leave, and when everything is over. It is like living in memories all your life. This is what Keats is doing. He is using his imagination to keep thinking and remembering his wife, which is already dead. It is like living in the past for as long as he lives. The moment you realize that the person you love will be with you, your feelings towards her change for the simple reason that she will always be with you. That is the moment when you dont love her any more but you are trying to keep someone new that you think you cant live without. Basically its an illusion. The moment when you reach it disappears. Keats is trying to reach unreachable, and the moment he gets it isnt what he wanted. This is because people like everything more, before they can have it. Keats illusions can be compared with doing forbidden actions. Once they become legalized no one does them no more, again, it `s because they are not forbidden no more. He is talking about love and beauty as they are facts and truth, but to me those are illusions that come and go. If they are the truth, love and beauty shouldnt change. What is truth once, should be the truth forever. However that is not the case with love or beauty of someone. Something is beautiful to us until we get to have it. We are so sure about it and we say its truly beautiful. Imagine yourself going to store to buy a shirt. You would say its truly beautiful and you have to have it no matter how much it costs. In a few weeks you dont like it, as much, in a few months you dont even pay attention to it. However if anyone takes it from you, you will missed more than the first day that you got it. This is what the love and beauty is. Its like trying to ketch your shadow.

Walt Whitman, unlike Keats, is creator of new space where every reader can have his own world in which everything can be just the way he wants it. It sounds like impossible but it really is. Whitman is enjoying in everything and anything in this world and that is what he wants reader to do. He is not limiting the reader by telling him what to live for like Keats did, but he gives him millions of keys to open any world he wants and enjoys in it, like Whitman did for himself.

"And I know I am deathless,

Custom Essays on Romance in literature, analysing Whitman

And I know I am solid and sound

I do not trouble my spirit to vindicate itself or be understood

I see that the elementary laws never apologize

I exist, as I am, that is enough

I am the poet of the body

I am the poet of the soul"(W.W. Song of my self. 1)

Whitman is giving to the reader self confidence, understanding and the right to create the things that please him. Even if society doesnt understand you do it because that is you, and what you want to be. Walt is expecting us to read his poems not from his perspective but to understand them from our own point of view, which is big sign of freedom that some people even nowadays do not have it.

"You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look

Through the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books,

You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things for me,

You shall listen to all sides and filter them from yourself." (Essential Whitman by Galway Kinnell)

In his world, Whitman is king and slave, east and west, left and right. He is trying to tell us that we are creating the world, and what we are going to be in it. We dont have to limit or joy and happiness because we are slaves or because we are kings, because we are rich or poor. He is showing us the way to find what we like, to see who we are. If we compare this thoughts with todays society we will see a big contrast. Each of us is trying to be like everyone else, or trying to like what everyone else does it, or even feel what everyone else does it. However is that us, or is it the ways we think we suppose to be because thats what others do. In the introduction is stated that according to romantism, society and civilization corrupt humanitys natural innocence. In todays life there is not too many people like Whitman was. Most of the things and people are stereotyped and follow the rules of others, which is the reason for lack of creativity.

Opposite of Keats Whitman invites us in the world where you can feel like millionaire without penny in your pocket. You can keep a company even if you are lonely or find the happiness even if you are sad.

Comparing John Keats and Walt Whitman, is like comparing one way street and huge intersection or comparing freedom and preason. Keats is forcing us to believe that beauty is all what is worth of leaving. While Whitman is opening our eyes to see everything we want to see, or like he said "there are millions of suns left" and we can chose and take as many as we want. This theory is similar to the one that Shakespeare wrote , in Hamlet, "Life is not the way it is but the way we want it to be". It is not beauty it is not truth or love, it is what we want it to be. Unlike Whitman, Keats is offering only one sun for all people in the world, which is truth and beauty. And the worst thing about this only sun is that we realize that we had one, only when its gone.

Relationship between the gods and mortals of Greek world and today¡¯s

Order your relationship between the gods and mortals of Greek world and today¡¯s paper at affordable prices!

By readings, I understood that there is a greater deep in the powers above the relationship between gods and mortals in Greek mythology. God is to being the most powerful, immortal, and infinity. I suggest that there is the different meaning of powers of gods in Greek and the gods today. I think today, their powers became less significant than the Greek world. And the representations and characters of goddess are eternally different, eternally the same. They both created the world in the representation of divinity. Personally, I believed that the god has shown human beings in many ways that he had given us everything we needed to be happy in this world and god gave us life, intelligence and forgiveness. However, from readings, the god¡¯s power gets stronger by violence victory with battlefield and also by sexual potency, which is not in really good representation to me.

I will first examine the relationship between the gods and mortals of Greek world and today¡¯s. I argue it has similar characteristics and qualities. Next, I will talk about that people worship and sacrifice in different way to be associated with their gods. Finally, by comparing and contrasting I will suggest that the mythology can be seen as a religion in my opinion.

Among secondary readings, Burkert described ¡°He gives now good, now evil¡¦..father holds power in his hands makes justice among men possible¡± (Burkert, 10) and ¡°Zeus was the only god who could become an all-embracing god of the universe¡± (Burkert, 11). There are many different gods but the strongest god; Zeus is the one divine and universal being as the oneness of humanity with goddess. Somehow, The gods can be generous and supportive, and also devastating and negative to any group of human. However, mortals must respect the powers above them that cannot be controlled. Today, what religious believe is that the gods served society by demonstrating the morals and some miracles. I think the relationship between gods and mortal today better expressed with the gods which always played an important role in the creation of society because it is very clear about knowing anyone who believe or not believe in gods but not in Greek world. Greek gods shared the human condition of mortality.Custom writing service can write essays on relationship between the gods and mortals of Greek world and today¡¯s

They were worshiped for similar reasons in Greek world and today. ¡°It was believed that the weather could be mastered by means of human sacrifice¡± (Burkert, 16), ¡° He is intimately connected with bull sacrifice, the overpowering of the strong by the stronger¡± (Burkert, 17), these statements are manifest in expectation from the giving, if they worship and sacrifice, then they expect to acquire what they want. Greek Myth had its origin in a worship of natural objects and forces; undoubtedly the worship of natural phenomena and of dead objects, of relations, and possibly of animals. Also it is a large amount of spiritual beings that filled all nature.

According to lectures and readings, no monolithic, such a ¡®Greek Religion¡¯, theology or religious thought existed in a variety of forms because they never mentioned that the believed in god but they just talk about it. My definition of religion would be a belief in a god as the highest one, and with a system of beliefs and practices. I perceive religion as a way to explain the unexplainable, but people believe. And Myths like any religion try to provide an explanation for unanswerable questions. Greek mythology should not be mistaken for fact since there is no scientific evidence of these events but should be taken as advice. This is not saying that all mythology is untrue or fictional. Like in any religion, faith is the dominant factor. In the reading, it stated, ¡°the myths of all people tell of the natural or supernatural origins of the gods¡± (Hornung, 14). The material of myth is the material of their life, the material of their body, and the material of their environment, and a living.

Greek mythology is also similar to modern religion in many ways. Like Christianity today, Mythology gave meaning to everyday situations. It also formed religious bases and a social structure for which it laid the common law for people like it said in the reading ¡° they obeyed lord Zeus, the Son of Kronos¡¦.¡± (Hesiod) and ¡°We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden; but God said, you shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden, not shall you touch it, or you shall die¡± (Bereshit, 1). In todays religious setting most would see the common law to live by illustrated in the Bible. Like the Greeks, they built altars, temples and churches to give praise to their God. In every religion we as a society have created a hero or savior that will save the believer from great despair and tragedy. Prometheus and his battle for mankind are seen as one of the greatest Greek heroes. Though heroes do not have to be strong and mighty, they must be able to turn chaos into order. For the Christian believer Jesus can be seen as a hero to conquers everyday chaos.

I believe that there is the different meaning of powers of gods in Greek and the gods today and the representations and characters of goddess are eternally different, or same. In this paper, I have discussed the power of gods and all these divine beings are represented as larger, stronger, wiser than mortals, but they are no small amount of subject to the passions of body and mind; their ascendancy over men lies mainly in the possession of immortality. I think it is important to remember that without myths there would be an unexplainable void in history. Mythology is not only an explanation for the unknown but a tool that helps us better understand one another.

The Chemical Constituents of Cells

Background Information

Mr. Barrett gave us a sheet on staining cells this helped us with the understanding of the experiment. We also did an experiment in class on potato cell, and in our findings we found starch. We also researched the foods and found that glucose is in the apple pulp.

Question Write my Essay on The Chemical Constituents of Cells for me

Are the following compounds found in everyday foods?

Protien, Glucose, Starch, lipids & sodium chloride

Hypothesis

My Hypothesis is that protein will be found in the milk & bread , Glucose in the apple pulp & bread, Starch in the bread & potato, Lipid in the milk & bread and Sodium chloride in the potato & bread.

Aim

To identify a range of chemicals found in potato pulp, apple pulp, milk and bread.

Method

The method will be broken into two parts

1. The testing of standard chemicals.

Put two test tubes (medium) into a test tube holder, add a chemical (E.g. glucose, starch) into each test tube. In each test tube put water as a control negative result. Follow the procedure ( table 1 below) for the positive result. This procedure shows you the control to compare your results.

TABLE 1

Protein (egg white) Add ml in a test tube and then add 1ml NaOH and then add 1- drops of CuSO4 and then shake.

Glucose Add to that ml of glucose and 1ml of Benedicts solution and heat over a Bunsen flame.

Starch Place a few drops of starch suspension on a tile. To this add a few drops an iodine solution.

Lipid (vegetable oil) Put five drops of oil into a test tube add 5ml of water then shake. Then add drops of Sudan and then shake again.

NaCI Add ml of Sodium Chloride and the add a few drops of sliver nitrate solution.

Results of control testing

. Put four more test tubes in your test tube holder, and add your cfood chemical then add the apple pulp, potato pulp, milk and bread to each tube. Compare the results with the negative and positive tests for each chemical test , repeat for each food chemical.

Results of experiment

FoodProteinGlucoseStarchLipidNaCI

Potato pulpYesyesyesnoyes

Apple pulpNoyesnonoyes

MilkYesnonoyesyes

BreadYesyesyesyesyes

Analysis of results

We found that when testing for the presence of protein that the positive test turned purple for the potato pulp, milk and bread. But it turned very clear blue colour for the apple pulp. This indicates that there are no proteins in apple pulp.

In the Glucose test the results were that it turned orange for the potato pulp, apple pulp and bread. For the milk it turned a blue colour, this shows that there isnt any glucose in milk.

When testing for the evidence of Starch we found that the positive foods turned blue/black were potato pulp and bread. That means the apple pulp and milk were negative and they turned yellow.

We found in lipids (oils) that milk and bread had a positive orange colour. The apple and potato pulp had a light orange colour and this shows that they were both negative.

We found in NaCI that all of the food turned a milky colour so they are all positive.

Discussion

The experiment has established what chemical compounds are found in the foods tested. It is surprising that protein was found in potato and sodium chloride was found in all the compounds which was not originally predicted. All other predictions in the hypothesis were correct.

Conclusion

It has been discovered that using the correct control groups it can be determined what food chemicals are found in different foods.

The events of September 11th changed our lives forever and greatly impacted the state of our nation. Many changes have taken place in response to the terrorist attacks, and The United States may never be able to return to the way things used to be.

Along with the war on terrorism, we are dealing with a recession, and the stocks are dropping along with the growing number of employees jobs. The giant corporation called Enron has fallen, leaving behind a government investigation, one dead executive, and thousands unemployed. All the things have become challenges for the state of our nation, giving us the golden opportunity to rise above the problems and become stronger than ever.

Even though several major tragedies have occurred, we have regained the key to helping us overcome it all-- the solid unity of our country. Flags adorn buildings, houses, cars, and T-shirts, proudly reflecting the patriotism of our nation. We are involved in a war on terrorism that will save other countries from going though what the U.S. has. Afghanistan villages held by the Taliban have been rescued, allowing men and women to have freedom and be able to make their own choices. As for the recession, I hope the lesson will be that large corporations are not above the law, and that there is more to life than money.

It is true that our nation is in a difficult state, not knowing what will happen next and we are all waiting for the other shoe to drop. Keen observation is needed now and everyone is on alert, making our nation safer by the minute. In spite of the present events happening so fast, we still go on and try to live our lives. The American spirit is instilled in us and no matter the state of the nation we will band together and overcome the challenges, while savoring the joyous moments of peace we will never again take for granted. We must once again return to the pride and patriotism of the early Americans, and hopefully continue to build an America that represents all of the best that life has to offer. The soil of an area provides the foundation for plant and animal development. Areas that have not yet developed plants tend to have poor, hard, or shallow soil. As plants begin to develop, soil tends to improve.

As soil conditions change, different communities of plants and other organisms may develop over time in a single area. This sequence of communities is called ecological succession. Succession generally follows one of two patterns. Succession is said to be primary if it occurs in a habitat that initially has no soil or organisms. An example of such a habitat is a lava field after a volcanic eruption. Succession is secondary if it occurs as a result of a disturbance. An example of such a disturbance is a forest fire that does not destroy the soil.

The plant species tend to succeed one another in patterns related to factors such as competition for soil and light. The pioneer plants, which develop first, must have the kinds of roots and other adaptations that allow them to live in the harsh conditions that exist early on. The improved soil that results from the growth of these plants then serves as home for plants that could not survive earlier. Eventually, a stable community, called climax community, will develop and remain unchanged unless conditions are disturbed significantly

Modern Art Essay

Modernism refers to a series of successive art movements and the particular artistic tendencies that unite them. It also refers to the era that included the omission of previous art styles and a rebellion against the past.

Van Gogh was a significant figure in the modernism era, as was Edouard Manet, who was considered to be the "Father of Modern Art" in his own right.

Modernism began as a European phenomenon and its roots can be traced back to the romanticism and realism of the 1th Century.

Buy cheap Modern Art term paper

Modernist art is not, as is sometimes wrongly perceived, the art of today, (art done by living artists is called contemporary art), it is said to have ended sometime between the mid 150s and early 180s. The end of this era signified the beginning of an even more perplexing movement, Post-Modernism.

During the Modernist era many modern times emerged and what followed was a succession of interesting and completely different periods for art. For example the Impressionist era (1875-180), Expressionism (105-10) and Cubism (105-115).

Modern art was the artistic liberation from traditional rules and conventions, and the freedom of colour accurately representing an object. It rejected the past and was a relentless quest for radical freedom of expression.

Instead of one art style dominating for centuries, many different styles "sprang up" in the form of isms.

Modern art styles included Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, DaDa, Surrealism and Abstract expressionism.

The following art styles are ones that happened in the time frame that Modernism is said to have ended.

Pop art, Op art, Conceptual art and Photo-Realism.

Edouard Manet was one of the first artists to break with the academic tradition and depict subjects taken from contemporary everyday life.

He startled critics with the modernity of his artworks, his work was indicative of the sea change in attitude that typifies modernism.

One of Manets most famous paintings was "Le Dejeuner sur lherbe" (Luncheon on the grass) made in 186.

The panting was for social purpose and the style the French Artist employed was pure modernism with the hints of Impressionism.

Manet was influenced by photography and Japanese prints.

The artwork depicts a naked woman and two "well-to-do" looking gentlemen enjoying a picnic in the woods.

Further in the background we can see a girl bathing in the water.

Lush vegetation surrounds them with a beautiful expanse of water stretching into the distance.

Emphasis is placed on the strong-flat colour, harsh-natural lighting, broken brushwork and the "raw" fresh appearance of the painting.

This artwork evokes a feeling of calm into the viewer due to its naturalness and relaxed presentation.

Despite the absurdity of the situation, everything seems in its right place and ultimately right.

The painting is an oil on canvas creation.

I, as the viewer, feel drawn to this painting because of the naturalness and happiness of the painting.

I am intrigued to the reason why a woman is dining naked with two men while another is bathing in the water behind.

I like the unproportional bodies of the women and their soft curves, they suggest relaxation to me. The figures all look content and calm which in turn makes me feel content and calm.

Van Gogh was a modernist painter who was prominent in the Post-Impressionist era (1880-100).

His artworks possessed the defining characteristics of modern art. They stressed private concerns, experiences and imagination as their source of art.

His art moved from the pretence of rendering nature toward pure abstraction where form, line and colour dominated.

He used techniques learnt from the Impressionists.

An example of Van Goghs art is his creation "The Chair and the Pipe".

Made in 1888 by the Dutch artist, the purpose of this artwork is personal.

Van Goghs style is typical of the post-impressionist period that he was a leader of.

His own feelings and emotions mainly influenced him, but he learnt a lot from the Impressionists and their methods.

In "The Chair and the Pipe" we see a chair as the dominant feature with a pipe and tobacco resting on it.

There is a door, tiled floor and a potplant in the background.

This painting expresses Van Goghs loneliness and depression, his craving for a friend.

This artwork follows an earlier piece he made called "Bedroom at Arles" when he was anticipating the arrival of his new friend Gaugin. The chair was a pair, on for himself and one for his friend.

In "The Chair and the Pipe" the chair is single representing the leaving and loss of Gaugins friendship and Van Goghs return to solitude.

The most important elements of design in this piece are colour and texture.

Bold colours, Yellow against blue walls and strongly drawn outlines of the chair in blue create unity in the painting.

The paint has been applied thickly to create texture along with short, choppy brushstrokes.

This painting possesses the aesthetic quality loneliness.

Van Gogh successfully conveys his feelings of loneliness to the viewer and evokes the same feelings in them through the single chair, the closed door and the leftover pipe.

The painting is an oil on canvas creation.

I, as the viewer, dislike this artwork.

Although the colours are attractive, I do not appreciate Van Goghs use of brushstrokes and texture.

I prefer a more fresh, clean image.

I do not like the way this painting makes me feel and the way Van Gogh constantly echoes his depression in his pieces. I enjoy much more an artwork that gives off a pleasant air and evokes feelings of happiness and relaxation.

There were many key factors that changed art in modern times and advanced the art-making process.

Such factors include the Machine age, social structure, the birth of photography, the quickening pace of life, transport, influence of the East, the Orient and Africa, Archaeology, World War I and World War II, economic crises, advances in science and technology and the introduction of new improved materials.

All these aspects of the modern world affected realistic traditions in art and brought about the many changes in the era we know as Modernism.

An important era which included the many "isms" and completely changed the way an artist expressed themselves.

They were given more freedom to paint what they wanted, and in the style they wanted.

There were no boundaries, traditions or rules restraining them.

Modernism was a complicated movement.

When asked the question "What is Modernism?", the best definition would be Modernism describes the relationship between modern art and modern times.

Values of Social Workers and Examples of Those Values

Social Workers have a wide variety of values. Values are defined as "the implicit and explicit ideas about what we cherish as ideal or preferable" (DuBois, 1, p11). This is stating that values provide a guideline for preferred behavior. The fundamental values underlying the social work profession include (1) service to others, () social justice, () dignity and worth of the person, (5) importance of human relationships, (6) integrity, and (7) competence. What follows are some descriptions of two of these values, dignity and worth of the person and social justice, as well as examples of these (DuBois, 1).

People have unconditional value and are inherently worthy of respect. The idea that there is a general quality behind all differences in ability, value, and circumstance, that qualifies people as having worth and value, is the foundation for the concepts of human rights. The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights (148) states that, "…all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights," and may claim "equality of opportunity" and "equality before the law." As social workers, the belief that all people have unconditional value is the basis for other social work values. Because people regardless of their situations have a right to self-determination and equal justice, and they deserve basic respect. Social workers may not approve of their clients behavior, may believe a client is an inadequate or selfish parent or spouse, or even a dysfunctional person. Still, the social worker must value the client and show basic respect.

To respect the dignity and worth of each individual means that social workers recognize the humanity within each person regardless of how that person may be judged by others. Social workers are reminded that there are times and circumstances when one individual, or a group of individuals have been judged to be less than fully humans. Social workers must resist accepting such judgments, and must insist that individual clients be treated with dignity and respect in recognition of our common humanity. Help with essay on Values of Social Workers

An example of social workers need for allocating dignity and worth of every person is if a social worker has opposing views of their clients. If a woman chooses to stay in an abusive relationship and has no children, regardless of the social worker wanting her to leave the situation, then the social worker has to respect the ideas and beliefs of the client about what she thinks is best for herself. The social worker may want to encourage the woman to leave, but the social worker needs to make her aware of the pros and cons of staying in that relationship and allow her to make her own decision. Once the woman has decided what she wants to do, then the social worker should respect her choice.

Dignity and worth of a person is necessary in order to establish social justice. Justice refers to fairness. It is often misconstrued to mean simply equality or humane generosity. However, the concept of justice is much more complicated. The universal recognized symbol for justice, a blindfolded woman holding a balancing scale, symbolizes justice as an objective and fair balancing of competing interests. Social justice aims for the good of the whole community. It requires people to inspire, work with, and organize with others to accomplish together a work of justice.

Friedrich Hayek, who believed that social justice is either a virtue or it is not, coined the term "social justice." If it is, it can be ascribed only to the reflective and deliberate acts of individual person. However, the term is not ascribed to the individuals, but to the social systems. The term "social justice" is used to denote a regulative principle of order (Novak, 000).

Social workers often work with people whose rights have been violated or threatened, whose privacy has been invaded, or whose basic needs are not being met. The most common issues that arise in social work practice include racism, elitism, sexism, heterosexism, ageism, and handicapism. All of these populations have been discriminated against, are those perceived as less productive, and hence disruptors of the economic order. So they unquestionably need social workers to speak for them in the political realm.

Social justice takes many forms. An example of social worker advocating for social justice is social workers addressing issues such as poverty and the needs of the poor and working poor within a specific community. The poor, and the working poor, deserve special attention, as poverty cuts across all boundaries and defies any attempt we may make to categorize the poor. People are poor because they lack economic resources needed to meet their basic needs, and they are invisible to many citizens. Advancing social justice means being involved at a variety of levels to create awareness for individuals to move out of poverty and to increase their access to needed economic resources. Since it can be agreed that an underlying bias against the poor exist within our society, advancing social justice also means advocating for the poor in each arena of social work practice.

In conclusion, social workers will need to pay close attention to their values with the advancing of the profession. There has been a decline in social workers in the pubic social services. Such shift suggests important questions about the mission of social work and its value base. To what extent should social work place primary emphasis on the poor and oppressed as opposed to social action, such as advocacy on behalf of the least advantage?

Certain value issues will continue to permeate the future of social work. Although some of these issues will change in response to new trends and developments, the fundamental issues related to social workers values will persist, such as the worth and dignity of people and social justice. Therefore, it will always be essential for social workers to examine these issues, which in the end form the very foundation of the profession.

Shakespeares writing tends to have an antagonist who is power hungry. In the play "Othello" the bad guy, Iago, uses his perceptiveness to pick up on Othellos doubts towards Desdemonas faithfulness in order to destroy their relationship. Iago is able to use his people skills to get close to Othello and then use this gained trust in order to devastate him.

In the beginning of the play we quickly discover that Iago only has bad intentions towards Othello, seeing that he tried to demolish their marriage. Since his original idea hadnt worked Iago was working out an immense scheme to break down Othello. Iago is bent on crippling his brave commander for one reason alone, revenge. He always felt as if Othello wasnt worthy of the respect that he had from everyone around him. Iago was jealous of Othellos high position in society, and found that he was not worthy of Desdemonas heart. So Iago was going to do whatever it took to ruin Othellos reputation.

After achieving the position of lieutenant by eliminating Cassio from the picture, Iago began to gain Othellos trust. Iago was very good at manipulating someone by gaining their trust and using words of wisdom to tell people what they want to hear. In act 4 scene 1 specifically Iago begins talking to Othello about the alleged relationship between Desdemona and Cassio. Iago tells Othello some words that Othello wanted to hear, and this made him listen to Iago intently. After Othello was hanging on his every word Iago states, "[Faith,] that he did I know not what he did."(Act 4 sc. 1 line 8) This makes Othello tense because he wants to hear what Iago know about Cassio. When Othello asks what they did all Iago said was, "Lie." (Act 4 sc. 1 line 40) It was that one small word which drove Othello insane with anger. Iago knew that he couldnt tell Othello everything he allegedly knew about Cassio; otherwise Othello wouldnt be so distraught. All that Iago has done was give Othello some words of wisdom concerning the two adulterers, but he then twists these words in order to enrage Othello. Othello becomes so angry he falls into a trance, where Cassio enters and Iago tells him that he would like to talk with him as soon as Othello leaves.

At this point Iago comes up with in immense plot to use three separate people in order to make Othellos fears about Desdemona come true. Iago specifically tells Othello he will get Cassio to admit his relationship with Desdemona while Othello isnt there. As Othello withdraws off stage Iago states to the audience, "Now will I question Cassio of Bianca, a huswife that by selling her desires buys herself bread and [clothes.] It is a creature that dotes on Cassio."(Act 4 sc. 1 lines 110-11) He states this in order for the audience to understand that hes going to question Cassio about Bianca, even though Othello thinks hes questioning her of Desdemona. From this point on he speaks with Cassio who bursts into laughter thinking of Biancas obsession with him. Iago uses his knowledge of Biancas fascination with Cassio in order to manipulate Othello into thinking they are talking about Desdemona.

After Iago has gained the trust of Othello, Othello doesnt think twice about the fact that Iago and Cassio speak of the adultery so easily. He sees Iago as a friend, and thinks that Iago only has good intentions when questioning Cassio of the relationship. Othello and Cassio are completely oblivious to the streak of lies that Iago has been passing off, and its all because Iago is so good with his words.

Iago was a character built with determination. He was willing to stop at nothing in order to succeed. Iago gained the trust of everyone he ever knew, but it turns out he was only using them to harm Othello and his first-rate reputation. Iagos character was built on revenge, and it was his intelligence and quick wits that helped him get his revenge on Othello.

Reading the last part of this book, The Transforming Vision, written by Brian J. Walsh and J. Richard Middleton, it contained some aspects that I found very interesting and practical to my life. One aspect deals with the duality between Christians following their following their faith and keeping it separate from their own lives in a particular culture. In a sense, this issue can create so much tension and controversy in many Christians lives, that rather than put up with criticism and ridicule they would decide not to outwardly follow the will of the Lord. From page ninety four of chapter five a quote from the apostle Peter, "I would be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have," I would assume that it means that a Christians world view should be consistent with their faith commitment. There is a difference in dualism and duality in the book, it states, that duality forces a Christian to look at their lives, either they serve the Lord or they do not and follow what society dictates. Dualism can blur the true line between serving Gods calling for us to do his will and what society tells us what to do. In chapter five it mentions, a person with a dualistic world view simply assumes that life has two distinct realms. And dualism can show up in at least three ways. How we work, how we view culture, and how we view the bible. It goes on to talk about the way we become either doctors or musicians with Christian values, but not Christians who happen to work as doctors or musicians. Trying to live up to the social pressures and standards can cause a dilemma for Christians as well. Our society dictates how we judge people by their occupation. Occupations that people have can determine the status of an individual. And status can determine wealth. However a dualistic approach can plague Christians. If the dualism persists we begin to believe that somehow we can separate our spiritual life from our cultural life. That we can work in an accepted system. And then we begin to compromise our beliefs. Instead of changing the system the individual is involved in the system changes the individual. Culture is just one aspect that has created problems for Christians duality. Chapter nine goes into how we have followed false gods, in fact, one god, with three personalities and they are

1. Scientism Reason is the belief of the scientific method can provide exhaustive knowledge of the world nature and of mankind.

. Technicism The technological mastery of nature. In which the goal of technology is to promote economic growth and material prosperity.

. Economism The chief idol, the goal of creating full wealth and material prosperity.Cheap custom writing service can write essays on The Transforming Vision

The first two goals go hand in hand in creating the ideal conditions for the final goal. The Transforming Vision, brings out aspects that covers how culture can affect Christians in this society. Beyond Culture Wars, written by Michael S. Horton, deals with how we have perceived what that culture should be and the conflict between Christian views and the perceptions society has projected on them. A good example of this is by Francis Schaeffer, he states, "There is a tremendous pressure to lose the Reformation memory as the years pass and our first task is not to align our message with the middle class establishment only have our children rebel against our faith because of our politics, but to recover the lost truth of our Reformation heritage." What was meant by that statement is we should not be afraid to offend unbelievers. Christianity is not a culture, it should not be compromised for the sake of what society deems is right. God has given Christians the word on what is right. You can serve only one master, regardless if we want to be loyal this country, this society, this culture. However, there have been many mistakes made in this conflict. The book goes into addressing what some of those mistakes are

1. The problem is humanism. We have incorrectly defined the enemy as the "cultural elite" and "humanists."

. The problem is the conspiracy of a "cultural elite." That our culture is dominated by a handful of individuals who shape the values, attitudes, and outlooks of the society. Many evangelicals are out of touch with the very world and institutions they want to influence. And the general assumption is that because they cannot a given argument they will try to impose their will by economic and political pressure.

. American Culture is a Judeo-Christian Monolith. Many Christians fall into the trap of believing that Western Culture in general or American culture is shaped excessively by "Judeo-Christian" beliefs. Thomas Jefferson is considered one of the fathers of this country and a holy man yet, he bitterly attacked the Holy Trinity as "superstition."

4. The greatest challenge today is Atheism. It is not the atheists who attack society but rather those who are religiously guided. Christians will fight to keep prayer in schools no matter the religion or object of faith. The book states, "The unknown god will do just fine." We must recognize that it is idolatry not atheism that is the real culprit.

5. Political solutions are ultimate. Many modern evangelicals are still confident in the modern disciplines such as psychology, the social sciences, and politics; while the rest of the world is losing its confidence in these authorities and wonder aloud about spiritual solutions. The book makes a good point on page fifty nine. "The government cannot make people good, charitable and God-honoring. We as disciples of God must take the step to educate the masses and bring them into the light of his teachings.

I must say that I enjoyed both books, but particularly Beyond Culture Wars kept me engrossed. Most people would think that it is one dimensional, one sided, but in a sense, it has to be. From a Christian standpoint there are only two ways to perceive things; the wrong way or Gods way. There are many people call themselves Christians but do not live the way that God meant for them. And I must admit I am one of them. In concentrating in attaining a higher status, a better job, I have forgotten what is most important to me. These things do not satisfy me and deep down I know that they never will. But I keep pushing, I keep moving in the wrong direction. However, reading this book has begun to help me see the path I need to take.

Throughout the advancing technology of today, the human culture is becoming futuristic with science and all of its components. Genetically modifying foods presents positive opportunities in agriculture and human health. Furthermore, more scientifically advanced modifications that select genetically superior plants, have enhanced the yield of crops, improved storability, and increased disease resistance. To simply remove genes from one organism and transfer them to another is generally harmless if we take appropriate precautions. This often-debated issue holds many objections. Additionally, one may claim that modifying genes at all is unnatural and evaluates a sufficient risk to many different organisms and species. However, the current technology we possess provides us with the capabilities to go beyond our limits. Why draw the line here?

Genetically modifying foods presents positive and beneficial opportunities. In most cases, we are not eating those genes. By the time a genetically engineered corn plant has been processed into corn oil, virtually none of the genes or the proteins they produce is left in the food (Nutrition Action Health letter, 001). Transferring genes from one plant or animal to another provides an advantageous outcome to this production. A better resistance to weeds, pests, and diseases is produced as well as better yield and a more efficient use of land. Additionally, altering genetics in foods contributes to a better texture, flavour, just think kids will eat there vegies for once, because the taste of the food can be changed by changing selected food genes and swapping them with overs and nutritional value of a product is through the roof. Therefore, there is a longer shelf life and less herbicide or other chemicals are used in the production of genetically modified foods, which provides a healthier option and an increased selection for the consumer. Biotechnology is going to help solve problems that we face going into the next century such as reduction of allergies, cancer cures, world hunger and development of more nutritious foods, and an increased nutritional production to feed a growing population (McLaughlin, 1). Subsequently, changing one or two genes does not make a foodstuff unacceptable. Religious and vegetarian groups would object to genes from some species, while adequate protection can be given with labelling the product. Ethically, one may argue that it is radically useless to modify foods genetically or that agriculture is already too technological and it will only progress more negatively. However, it is likely that increasing numbers of genetically modified foods will emerge in the near future with more variety of modifications and associated benefits. (In fact, there is some already on your shelves)

Generally, genetically modified foods will affect the lives of most people in the areas of food, medicine and environmental protection as it meets the modern technology of today. This advancing technology requires careful regulations to ensure that there is no threat to human health in introducing this production system. Adequate labelling, accurate product information, and the provision of species are some of the measures that one can review as a means of ensuring public confidence in the safety of genetically modified foods. Additionally, this is also effective as a means of providing those with objections to the technology with a means of avoiding these foods. Fundamentally, by altering the genes of a specie for the benefit of human race and its development is simply not "changing" the rules in life, but more rather it allows us to progress into a new revolution of advancements for the future.

Alcohol is a huge problem on most college campuss. Twenty one may be the legal drinking age, but some how minors find a way to get a hold of alcohol. People as young as fifteen are able to get their hands on an alcoholic beverage. Alcohol is said to be the chosen drug among college students. College students have a tendency to drink more then the general population. It is said that college students spend approximately $4. billion annually an alcohol. This money is spent on 40 gallons of alcoholic beverages, and 4 million cans of beer. The type of college, geographical location, the ethnic and gender makeup plays a role in the amount of drinking that occurs on campus. For example colleges with fraternities and sororities have higher statistics, this is because of their sponsored parties. They drink more often, which contributes to heavier drinking.

Studies show that college students drink more when they are in a group, which speaks to peer influences. When it comes to drinking on campus there is no legal age so to speak. When someone goes to a party they dont get carded, they get a cup. Studies show that students between the ages of 18-1 drink more then those that are over 1. Statistics show that the younger the person the more he or she drinks. Forty one percent of college students report to binge drinking, and nearly four percent drink daily. Binge drinking is defined as four drinks for a women in one sitting, and five drinks for a male in one sitting. Students that binge drinker have even more problems then students who dont. Binge drinkers are more likely to have hangovers and engage themselves in unplanned sexual activity. There are endless consequences that come with drinking. A range of problems occur due to alcohol consumption. The most popular problem that occurs with drinking is academic problems, others include things such as trauma, date rape, recklessness, vandalism and pregnancy in women. In a recent study 56,000 college students reported a slip in their grades. Students went from an A to Ds and Fs, their GPAs dropped which will effects their future career plans as well as any scholarships they are receiving. There are many organizations that are trying to reduce these terrible statistics. Two for instance are MADD and

SADD. These such organizations help to raise awareness about alcohol and all its dangers. Colleges have even devised plans to reduce the amount of alcohol consumed on their campuss. A college should provide students with alternate activities, in order to prevent then from drinking. Campus facilities should remain open, and colleges should expand their recreational activities on nights and weekends. Many colleges have strict rules and regulation concerning alcohol. Here are some more ways that colleges are trying to prevent and reduce alcohol problems. First, they enforce their rules and regulations. Failure to abide by these rules will result in a fine, probation, community service, or even suspension in the severe cases. Secondly, they reduce availability by banning beer, and parties on campus. Thirdly, colleges have been banning advertising alcoholic beverages in school newspapers and throughout the campus.

Most colleges feel that advertisement has a big influence on students. It not only puts the idea in their head, but it also advertises cheap beer. If students knows that a certain beer is cheap that will give then an incentive to go out and buy the beer. Another way that colleges are trying to reduce the alcohol consumption is buy counseling. Buy constantly reinforcing the dangers of drinking, colleges hope that students will listen and stop drinking. I decided to interview one of my teachers, in order to get her opinion about alcohol on college campuss. She has a son that is presently looking for a college. I was curious to see how she felt about sending her son away to a college, with all the talk about alcohol on campuss. After talking with my teacher I realized that every parent is worried about the amount of alcohol on college campuss. Help with essay on Alcohol In College

She said that she was very nervous and worried about the amount of alcohol on college campuss. She also said that she feels confident that her son will make responsible decisions while in college. Parents often talk to their children about drugs and alcohol, and my professor has already had a discussion with her so. I feel that parents do have their childs best interest in mind. Parents are not dumb they know what goes on at college. Most parents are prepared for the stories and the talks. My feelings on drinking has greatly changed after attending college. In high school, I used to party all the time. The parties in high school were nothing like the ones at college. Now I know why everyone says that you havent been to a party, until youve been to a college party. I never witnessed binge drinking until I came to college. I have no problem with partying. Sure I like to drink, once in a while, but not everyday. Here on campus the parties start on Wednesday, and go until Saturday. Even before

Wednesday people are talking about drinking and which house is having the party.

I feel that drinking in college get extremely out of control. In the three months that I have been here, I have heard, and saw some scary things. One girl in my dorm almost got rapped because a guy was too drunk. Another girl in my dorm lost her virginity to a guy she didnt know, because they were both so hammered. Alcohol is not only a dangerous drug, but it also can make or break you. The girl that lost her virginity now has a horrible rep, and no one wants to be seen with her. I know so many people that have messed around with guys because they were drunk. I dont know about you but I dont think I could mess around with a guy that I dont know, and on top of that hardly remember what happened. Alcohol is an extremely addictive and dangerous. There are some many college students that have either ruined their rep or gotten kicked out of school because of alcohol. Honestly does stumbling, vomiting, and basically looking like a fool sound fun, I dont think so. If you are going to drink, at least have control, drink in moderation and be careful. I know that when I drink

I never leave my friends, nor do I drink too much, because I have people that watch out for me. Getting drunk doesnt need to be a rite of passage, and hangovers arent a prerequisite for graduation (Shalala).
