The purpose of a soliloquy is to outline the thoughts and feelings of a certain character at a point in the play. It reveals the innermost beliefs of the character and offers an unbiased perspective as it is merely the character talking to the audience, albeit not directly, and not to any other characters who may cause the character to withhold their true opinions. Therefore, Hamlets first soliloquy (act 1, scene ) is essential to the play as it highlights his inner conflict caused by the events of the play. It reveals his true feelings and as such emphasizes the difference between his public appearance, his attitude towards Claudius in the previous scene is less confrontational than here where he is directly insulted as a satyr, and his feelings within himself. In this essay, I will outline how Shakespeare communicates the turmoil of Hamlets psyche.

Hamlets despair stems from his mothers marriage to his uncle and it is this that is the driving force behind what is communicated. His constant repetition of the time in which it took the two to get married, But two months dead...yet within a month...A little month...Within a month...most wicked speed, suggests his disgust at the situation and that it is not necessarily the nature of their incestuous relationship that troubles Hamlet; more the short time in which it occurred. In fact, this is especially well communicated to the audience as, throughout the soliloquy, the passage of time that Hamlet describes gets less from two months to Within a month. This has the effect of outlining Hamlets supposed contempt of his mother for only mourning a month whilst also highlighting that it is the time involved that is vexing him and not specifically the deed.

In this soliloquy, we also learn about Hamlets adoration of his father and how this serves to emphasise the scorn that he shows towards his mother. Hamlet communicates that his father was a divine, almost god-like character, so excellent a king, who was so loving to my mother. He also illustrates the contrast between the new king and the old and as such his mothers choice, Hyperion to a satyr. This example of extreme contrast increases the importance of Hamlets father and yet also makes a mockery of Claudius character; one which, to this point, the audience could have seen as strong and domineering.

When Hamlet says, Frailty, thy name is woman, he is personifying frailty as the entire of the female race. The actions of his mother have lead him to believe that all women are capable of acting in this wicked way and that all women are weak. Alongside the image of his father that is communicated, Hamlet is saying, and therefore feeling, that the people that he could look up to in life have departed and that his entire world has been altered, It is not nor it cannot come to good.

The distressed nature of Hamlets mind is also communicated well by the imagery that is used throughout the soliloquy. At the start, Hamlet says that he wants his too too solid flesh to ...melt, thaw, and resolve itself into a dew. This goes alongside the later lines, How weary, stale, flat and unprofitable seem to me all the uses of this world, where the build up of adjectives, one after the other, serves to highlight just how difficult it is for Hamlet to live in the world. It is as if Hamlet cannot deal with or, indeed, stand the physical side of life anymore; he needs to get rid of his body to be able to deal with the inner conflict going on in his head. The poetry of these lines and the image that is expressed serve to reveal not only the tragic nature of his problem, also highlighted by his allusions to suicide, but also create a link between him and the audience. In fact, the entire soliloquy establishes a connection between the audience and Hamlet, a concept that is essential in the play.

Another good example of imagery in the soliloquy is that of the unweeded garden that grows to seed; things rank...in nature. This image represents the something that is ...rotten in the state of Denmark. It is a simile for the state of his society, as in it used to be nice but now is gross. The language of the description also emphasises this as it suggests images of things that are unprofitable and nasty. These images all serve to highlight Hamlets impressions of the society that the audience are only just forming theirs upon; therefore, leading to a bias towards the character of Hamlet.

The structure of the piece also communicates the nature of Hamlets thoughts as he is constantly changing subject, Let me not think ont - Frailty thy name is woman! A little month, and is doing so by using short, broken sentences. These help reveal and suggest the depth of Hamlets thoughts; he has so much going in his head that he wants to commit suicide and is therefore trying to rationalise his feelings. He is repressing himself from revealing his true, innermost thoughts, But break, my heart, for I must hold my tongue, perhaps because the gravity of his situation is too much to bear.

Therefore, this soliloquy is successful in communicating the emotional state of Hamlet to the audience because it reveals the true nature of Hamlets feelings; not only through the diction but also through the imagery, language and underlying messages of the text. It successfully highlights the divisions of character of Hamlet whilst aiding the audience in building a connection with him

- The Greatest Fear I Have Ever Experienced -

Even though I went to sleep in my own bed, I didnt awaken there. Instead, I found myself inside a tube with only a tiny window to the outside world. Dont move, ordered a strange voice, so I tried to steady myself inside the machine that made a rather primitive-sounding racket belying its obviously high-tech nature.

So lets go back. On Nov. 1, 001, I was an apparently healthy 50-year-old man who had worked as a professional journalist for mos ...

History books mainly write about great men of the past, and how they achieved good or even great things for our world.Yet.,little is known about the great women of the past.It is only since the twentieth century that women are given equal opportunitioes.Despite such social changes,it is still a popular thought that it is men who change the world as we know it,yet many women have done so too.I learned much whilst researching this topic;for instance I did not know that so many women-who ironically are relatively unknown-have achieved great things in areas such as poltics, sport and music. That is why I am going to argue the case that A womens place is not in the home.

We all know about famous male scientists such as the great Einstien, but little is known about female scientists. Many would not know that Dorothy Hodgkin was the first British woman to win the Nobel Prize in 164,for her work on penicillin and the structure of vitamins.Yet,it is a man,Fleming,we credit with the discovery of penicillin and neglect the role of Mrs Hodgkin in the development of a life-saving drug that is so important in our lives today.Emily Jane Lloyd was the first women to enter the Institute of Chemistry in 18.Both of theses women acieved great things, but both are relatively unknown.

It is also said that most well regarded athletes are male and this is reflected in the rewards paid outmen earn more, women less.Tennis players like Tim Henman and footballers like David Beckham and Ronaldo are known throughout the world-but they are men. Many would rather pay money to spectate at all male football or tennis match than any other all male sports, than pay an equal amount to watch women footballers, for instance.A major breakthrough took place in 16 when the Womens Football Association was formed to oversee different womens teams and leagues.Discrimination also applied to football managers and to referees.Only in 176,did Jenny Beazly became the first woman referee at an all male football match. Then in 188 Annie Basset became the first general women manager of a league team,Reading Football club.An ex-pupil of my school St Josephs,Rose Reilly had to move to Italy to play professional football. She was a star!Despite this negativity regarding women having their place in sports, there is now a womens World Cupfor football and more and more people are taking an interest in other womens sports.Sport is not the only new area of activity opening up to women.

It is only now at the beginning of the twenty first century that more women MPs are taking their place in Parliament which until the beginning of the twentieth century was a male privilege. In 17 Maragret Thatcher became the first female Prime Minister of Britain.I would not say that I was knowledgeable enough in politics to argue that voting such a woman Prime Minister was or still is a good idea.Nevertheless, this was a major turning point in British history, more so for women. Order Custom Essay on "A Woman's Place is not in the home"

Ironically, the best known women in the twenty first century are singers, this is because the medias money comes mainly from showbusiness, the paparazzi can earn thousands of pounds for one picture of a male or female star.Lita Roza in 1 became the first woman in Britain,to reach Number One in the charts with the song How Much is that Doggie in the Window.Years later,in the twentieth century a girl band the Spice Girls exploded on to the music scene and reinvented the phrase Girl Power. They emphasised the fact that all women have girl powersingle mother parents, women teachers and doctors all have this girl power. For many women this could mean a new belief for themselves-that women are allowed to have hopes, dreams and ambitions like the men before us had. However, for others this could be an empty phrase meaning little of nothing to them.I think the phrase girl powerhas had a great impact on women all over the world.Women now realise that they can have a career as well as raising a family.

One women who certainly had girl powerwas Emily Pankhurst. In the early twentieth century women had hardly any rights, this angered Pankhurst. She was angry at the fact that women were not allowed the right to vote, whereas men who were alcoholics, criminal or even criminally insane could still vote.Pankhurst formed the Womans Social and Politcal Union in 10.With many other women,Pankhurst organised rallies to gain more support. Many women were take taken to prison. When they got there, the women would organise hunger strikes. The prison officers fought back and force fed the women. This was dangerous and often fatal. But the campaign succeeded. In 108 the Government granted women the right to vote.

I have a great deal of respect for Pankhurst not just for her courage, but for her perseverance and determination. She could have given up the fight, but with her patience she reached her goal and also the goal of many women in the end.And she achieved this in just under fifteen years.

In this eassay,I have given examples of just a small number of women who have achieved great things. These achievements are the equal of any mans achievements.I do not think that anyone can criticise women until they realise that women all over the world have done great things and will continue to do great things in the future. It is very sexist to say that A womens place is in the home.
