Kiss of DeathOrder College Papers on Deaf Issues and Awareness in Lou Ann Walker's "A Loss For Words"

Interpretations

. The phrase "Anglo kiss of death" to Rendon means being torn apart from his culture

and not being able to speak the language of his origin. He faced a quandary of

individuality and route of his native language and was assimilated into the English

language forgetting his spoken language. I think being Chicano to doesnt mean more to

Rendon than his ancestry, family, education, or culture. I think with the help of his

ancestry, education, and family he came to respect and appreciate his domination in the

world as being Chicano. I think since he came to recognize the importance of being

Chicano it now means a lot to him a holds a special value to him.

4. The criticisms "monolingual, monocultural, and colorless" are valid criticisms in the

eyes of Rendon because thanks to his native origin of people they rescued him from the

ignorance of him showing this acts towards his culture. I think Rendon made the right

choice in one perspective of embracing his life with another cultural, because he wasnt

ignorant towards the rest of the world and wanted to be accepted and understand the

knowledge and history of other cultures and seal his life with it. Rendon sealed his life

with the culture that drew him into believing that he must assimilate into the surrounding

culture too much and lost the history and sense of his own foe fear of not being

discriminated against, not being acknowledged, or accepted. Rendon not only wrapped

himself into the outside world, but he wrapped the outside world into him.

6. This particular essay displays the use of highly emotional words and phrases. Rendon

has an upbeat attitude and could be very positive and negative in displaying his feelings.

He is a little detrimental in some of the things he states about his culture and influence of

society which drew him into neglecting his own identity. The writer is very informative

and is straightforward, which leads to how constructively critical he is in portraying his

highly impetuous approach about his dilemma he faced and how he overcame it. I believe

Rendon uses a good tone throughout his essay because it helps the audience realize and

relate to the subject that he focused on. It also helps one understand the kind of society we

live in and how they are unaware of those outside of it. This relates to Does America Still

Exist in the sense of how it displays to the audience how people think, but in reality they

arent accepted and come to familiarize their selves with knew customs and ways just to

be accepted and loose their own culture. IT is also different because in the essay "Does

America Still Exist", Rodriguez didnt explicitly define American because he wasnt

confident of his existence in the United States or with his standings, but Rendon on the

other hand came to understand both cultures and associated his life in between them.

Applications

1. The concept of self and self-in-group identity is a problem in our world today under the

society we live in today tends to lead to self identity because there is so much competition

and pressure in the world today. People strive to come to realize who they really are.

Others associate minorities in a group as according to race, color of skin, customs, and

etc. One doesnt look at someone for who they really are and what they stand for in the

world. They recognize them in a sense of inhumanity and callousness and they accumulate

them into loosing their own knowledge and history.

. I feel that teachers should strive to touch each culture and make them realize that they

all exist and interface with one another. A teacher might try to accomplish this interracial

issue by being dedicated and make everyone a part of it equally and interact with one

another in a good standing.

Authority

What exactly is authority? Specifically in the Encarta World English Online Dictionary the

exact definition of authority is "The right to command The right or power to enforce rules or

give orders." On the contrary, to me authority represents all things that govern my own life. Write my Essay on Authority for me

There are many things everyday which govern my life, and the lives of others. However, I will

only be discussing three. They are my personal authority, law enforcement, and teachers.

I will start with the beginning of my everyday life to explain my personal authority. When

I get out of bed and after my shower, then my children are woke up for school. First they are to

make their beds and get dressed. They understand that if they do not do as I tell them then there

will be consequences that come later when they return from school. Therefore, my children, to

me, are well behaved for their ages.

After I am in my car heading to school myself, I am governed by rules and regulations.

For an example, there are speed limits, stop signs, stop lights, and other signs that must be

obeyed. If at any time I do not obey the law, then the law enforcement officers have the right to

pull me over and give me a traffic citation. If there is an accident and someone is injured, then I

will end up in front of a higher authority. That is why there are laws (higher authorities) there,

otherwise we would live in chaos.

Once I have made it to school, providing I have not gotten arrested, I then belong to the

teachers. I do not have to stay there nor do I even have to show up, but they still have authority

over part of my life. For instance, if this paper and the paper after this one does not get turned in

on time, then my grade will definitely be lowered. If the teacher had no authority over me or my

grades in the first place, then I would be able to do that and still retain the grade that I think I

should have. Consequently, it doesnt work that way, nor do I see it working that way in the near

future.

In conclusion, the world would not be what it is today if the teachers, law enforcement,

parents, etc., had no authority. I dont believe that we would be able to coexist with each other if

there were not someone somewhere to tell us or inform us of the things that must be

accomplished or laws that must be followed After all, what would each and everyone of us really

do if there were not someone there to say no? From the beginning of time, there has been some

sort of authority somewhere. In my lifetime I dont think it will ever change.

There are certain aspects about certain movies that also bring out the prejudgments and the bias views like American History X. American History X is a movie about the Vineyards, a white family whos police father is murdered by a black man. It becomes then that the oldest son, Derek becomes angry at the world of race, and calls minorities, " Social parasites", and enrages on about how we, the White America give them the chance to live their lives in limits only the sky puts and end to. Then the minorities screw it up and kill us physically and as a united nation. "Europes ancestors made it for centuries in America before the black man came without a problem," explains an upset, young angry Derek Vineyard, with younger brother Danny watching. Certainly, there is something wrong with this though, because simply, everyone is a human being, and unfortunately a lot is limited for minorities in America. This movie displays how a man who hates and hates, eventually kills a black man, and does years in prison for it. In prison, his job was to fold towels and his towel -folding mate is a black man. He learns a lot from him and is even helped by him. Eventually he learns that people with the same beliefs on the outside as him, end up being the same ones who beat him up and anally induce him while in prison. Same kind of white people as he, and yet there wasnt a thing he could do about it, because traditionally in prison, if you dont make friends you can get killed. You would also allow yourself to be outnumbered in the beginning with swastika tattoos all over your body. His towel, friend who was of African-American ancestry, explains how he got 6 years for armed robbery. It was funny how Derek only went three years for murdering a black man. The towel buddy turns out to be his hero however, as he is the one who sees something in him and talks to his jail "gang" into leaving him alone. When you are in prison, it is best to associate yourself with some kind of group, so you arent an easy target to kill and push around. In this case, the white man was attacked. Even by his Swastika brothers. His enemies, specifically the black minority, were at his back now, without him realizing it. were the ones holding his life in the palm of their hands. The towel -folding friend kept him from getting killed by the black men in prison. They certainly didnt enjoy his swastika tattoos. The black mans one request was to save some for the 'brothaz next time.

When he came out of Prison, things had changed for him, yet on the other hand, his little brother Danny followed in his footsteps and continued the hatred that was against those who killed his father. Eventually the older brother is out of jail and he tries to teach Danny that he is making a mistake. He shows how he has seen the lightness of opposite races, and how even they helped him live to today. Unfortunately the hate has gone too far causing Danny to be murdered by a black boy from his school. This was from a previous conflict in the school bathroom, where Danny blew smoke in front of the black boys face in front of his friends. And the movie has a good psychological point where it displays through the film that the white people discriminate and limit the chances of other races, and the other races get fed up with it. Then we make fun of the minorities and begin to hate and insult, and its hate that causes the hate. He ends up being shot because he was hated. It was the black boy that showed his hatred by shooting the white man that was hated because he hated the black boy in the first place. Now, in the end, there are two of the immediate family dead. Both are due to hate, hate that could have both been stopped.

We are not enemies, but friends. We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely hey will be, by the better angels of our nature. To bring up a contradicting movie, which is a personal favorite of mine, The Boondock Saints is a movie about hatred within the white race. The movie takes place in downtown Boston and holds the site of what has been believed as an organized crime Mob war between the Irish, the Russians, and the Italians. People are being killed left and right and the Russians think they own this and the Italians, they own that, but two men are there to stop that. The Irish brothers, Connor and Murphy, nicknamed the Saints, were granted Gods permission to get rid of the scum in South Boston. They go on action packed killing sprees of bad men, all of whom which are white. This is one of the first movies in which I was able to see the "indifference of good (white) men", which in the beginning of the movie is quoted as the greatest evil by a priest in a South Boston Church. However, its funny how this is what I considered, one of the greatest plots in a film I have ever seen, and yet it isnt a common story like other movies are. Certainly, American History X is a little bit more popular than The Boondock Saints. Its probably because no one cares to rage in the media about a movie that shows killings within the white race.

"There are varying degrees of evil. We urge you lesser forms of filth not to push the bounds and cross over into true corruption, into our domain."- Murphy (younger brother)

The media most definitely has influenced our portions of America. Since day 1 the white man has not been 100% acceptable with minorities, and since day 1 the laws have changed, but the outcomes have not. With the problems in the city of Milwaukee, these problems permit, and are a result of a society that is not willing to accept change, nor grant opportunity. I believe that many of the publics view on minorities are similar to those of the young man in American History X, where the minorities are social parasites. At least, that is what I believe started this whole mess, why else arent suburban parents allowing their children into their sons and daughters schools? Why do we have to let them, why cant they?

My home city is a subject of arrogance and a happening that has been resulted by an indirect hatred and racial battle. Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream one day, and as of the 160s a lot has changed but still his dream is not complete. And to go with the other movie, The Boondock Saints, it is apparent that obviously white people can be murderers and live low lives as well. The public fails to realize that, or chooses not to, especially in the city of Milwaukee. Sometimes the indifference of good men, which becomes the greatest evil, can be present in any man of any race. In some of the music we listen to, we are given the words of a man who came from the "Gangstas Paradise." Coolio talks about how he was educated and had money on his mind but wasnt allowed to do so, and he was caught chasing dreams. This very much reminds me of the chapter 0 in Milwaukee because the people who arent selected to go into Chapter 0 almost lose hope as time goes along, because their dreams are not nearly as accomplishable as those who are receiving better education. And who is to say they are subject to have any hope when the white people control their destiny? They are manipulated and told where to go and where not to go as far as education and life in Milwaukee. Minorities are not allowed to engage in being the majority or equivalence of a school system. Districts like Shorewood are not allowing this to happen.

The MPS rate of college students is 15%, why should they be given the chance to dream, if more than likely it is not going to happen? That is just mean, and it slaps them in the face as a result. It becomes a situation that cant have any other solution and how are these souls supposed to make their money? And can we really blame them for hating us? I would be jealous too.
