In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the theme revolves around a sin that has been committed. It takes places in the seventeenth century in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Hester Prynne, who had an affair with the local Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, commits the sin. Roger Chillingworth is Hesters husband while the affair is taking place. Because of the affair, Hester and Arthur have a daughter named Pearl. The sin that Hester commits is adultery. Hawthorne uses a variety of symbols throughout The Scarlet Letter, and he symbolizes the scarlet letter A in several ways.

In the Puritan community, A is a sign of punishment, and the red A is worn on the chest of the offenders clothing. The A may mean adultery, Angel and Able. Hester, after years of helping, serving and sympathizing with the townspeople, was viewed by the Puritans to mean Able rather than adulteress; A meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a womans strength (186). For example, when Hester has won some respect from the Puritans, Such helpfulness was found in her, -so much... that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification (186). To the Puritans the letter A also symbolizes an Angel. A great red letter in the sky, the letter A... showed up at Governor Winthrops death in the sky (18). For, as our good Governor Winthrop was made an angel this past night... (18).

The meaning of the A is also different to each of the characters. To Hester it is a constant reminder of humiliation and of the sin that she committed. Dimmesdale believes that the A reminds him of his own guilt, and there is no way that he can forgive himself. The A to Pearl, a young girl, is a bright and mysterious curiosity. Hester Prynne is an English woman who is punished by having to wear the embroidered scarlet letter A on the breasts of her clothing receives public humiliation by standing in front of the townspeople of Boston. The A that Hester wears is ... in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread... (58). Hester Prynne, through the eyes of many Puritans, is an extreme sinner; she has gone against the Puritan ways, committing adultery. For this harsh sin, she must wear a symbol of shame for the rest of her life.

Hester does not name Dimmesdale as Pearls father, and the Puritans view Dimmesdale, their pastor, as a holy man, incapable of any sin. The Puritans ask their children bury them close to Dimmesdales grave believing that he would go to heavenward before them... (164). However, because of the shame and guilt Dimmesdale felt, when thinking of his grave, questioned...whether the grass would ever grow on it, because an accursed thing must there be buried (164)! Pearl is young and really does not understand what the A means that her mother wears upon her breasts.

In the afternoon of a certain summers day, after Pearl grew big enough to run about, she amused herself with gathering handfuls of wild-flowers...flinging them, one by one, at her mothers bosom... (110). Whenever Pearl hits the A, she dances around to celebrate the accomplishments that she makes as a young child. She also does not know, much about the sin that happened between Hester and Dimmesdale.

However, the Romantic philosophies of Hawthorne put down the Puritan beliefs. Hester is a beautiful, young woman who has sinned, but is forgiven. Hawthorne portrays Hester as divine maternity, and she can do nothing wrong. The physical scarlet letter, a Puritanical sign of disownment, and Hester herself are shown through the authors tone and diction as a beautiful, gold and colorful piece.

The people around Hesters everyday life soon forget that Hester committed a sin and has to wear an A which means different things. The A may have been a form of punishment in the Puritan community, but Hester works her way through the shame and humiliation of wearing the A. Many Puritans began to forget about the A Hester wears upon her breasts. Hawthorne uses symbolism throughout the novel to make the meaning of the scarlet letter more meaningful.

The Odyssey Portrayal of Women

How does Homer portray women in the epic, The Odyssey? In order to

answer this question you must look at woman and goddesses as two separate

groups of people. This is because they are portrayed in tow separate ways. Cheap Custom Essays on Portrayal of women

You see, a regular woman like Penelope is looked at as beautiful but has

very few rights.

If we first look at Penelope we see how beautiful she must be, because we

know that she has a lot of suitors staying at her house and they all want to

marry her. It is not until later on that we find out how low in society

mortal women are. The first time this is shown is when Telemukus has to

choose one of the suitors to be his mothers husband. Now just think that a

son has more power in this society than his own mother. From Telemukus

stand point this must be a big moment for him because he is now looked at as

a man, cause he has to choose a wife for his mother, but for Penelope, she

must feel degraded and low.

On the other hand if you look at a goddess like Athena, the gray eyed

goddess, (many pages) who is actually running the show, she has much more

power than many men do. For instance she is able to convince Zeus, ruler of

all gods, that Odysseus has suffered enough and to set him free. Eventually

Odysseus is set free over the demands of Poseidon.

You can also look at Calypso and see how this near goddess, nymph, has power.

This is shown as Odysseus is leaving and she asks him if he would want to be

immortal in return for him staying with her forever. This shows that she has

power, more than many women, and can grant anyone immortality. Homer also

describes her as lucky, that she is beautiful, but you can tell that inside

Calypso is very lonely. This portrayal of Calypso is also seen is the song

written by Susan Vega. In this song Calypso is seen as a sad and lonely

woman who is trapped on an island forever. This is a very different picture

than Homer paints for us.

In conclusion, woman are portrayed differently depending upon who they

are. But like men, the gods are at the top of the pyramid, the son of a god

is in the middle, and a regular man is at the bottom. As you can see men and

woman were treated quite similar, but when in fact if you were at the same

stage in the pyramid, than the man was higher, and had more power, than the

women.

The Treatment of Women in Homers Odyssey

Judged by modern Western standards, the treatment of women by men in Homers Odyssey can be characterized as sexist. Women in Homers Odyssey are judged mainly by their looks. If important men and gods consider a woman beautiful, or if her son or husband is a hero or has an important position such as king, the woman is successful. The way women in The Odyssey are treated is based on appearance, the things men want from them, and whether the woman has any power over men. During Odysseus journey to the underworld he sees many different types of women. We hear about their beauty, their important sons, or their affairs with gods. We hear nothing about these womens accomplishments in their lifetime. Odysseus tells how Antiope could boast a god for a lover,(1) as could Tyro and many other women. Epikaste was called that prize(15) her own son unwittingly married.

Some women are known for the deeds of their sons or husbands, but never for a heroic deed of their own, their personalities, and what they do themselves. It seems the only accomplishment women could achieve was being beautiful. Theseus had no joy of(15) the princess Ariadne because she died before this was possible. Homer makes it sound as if Ariadnes life was useless because she did not give Theseus pleasure. The only woman we hear of for a different reason is Klymene, and we only hear of her because she betrayed her lord for gold.(15) This is the only time we hear of a woman for something she did, and once we do, it is a negative remark. Penelope, Odysseus queen, is paid attention to only because of her position. Because she has a kingdom, she has suitors crowding around her day and night. Being a woman, Penelope has no control over what the suitors do and cannot get rid of them. The suitors want her wealth and her kingdom. They do not respect her enough to stop feeding on Odysseus wealth; they feel she owes them something because she wont marry one of them. One of the suitors, Antinoos, tells Telemakhos ...but you should know the suitors are not to blame- it is your own incomparably cunning mother.(1) Even Telemakhos doesnt respect his mother as he should. When the song of a minstrel makes her sad and Penelope requests him to stop playing, Telemakhos interrupts and says to her, Mother, why do you grudge our own dear minstrel joy of song, wherever his thought may lead. (1) If Telemakhos respected his mother he would have asked the minstrel to cease playing the song that made her upset.

Through Penelope, Homer shows how an ideal wife should feel toward her husband. Penelope remembers Odysseus as a great king and husband even though he has been gone for twenty years. Odysseus thinks of Penelope as his wife who, under all conditions, should be faithful to him no matter how many times he has been unfaithful or how long he has been gone, and Penelope fulfills this wish.

Athena seems to be the most admired female in the entire book. She is always spoken of respectfully and is remembered for her heroic deeds. She is not degraded like many of the other women Odysseus sees in the underworld. Everyone worships her and speaks about her achievements with great admiration; she is truly admired, but only because she is a goddess. Athena has control over men that most women in The Odyssey do not. Womens lives depend on what men think of them. On the other hand, mens lives depend on Athenas opinion of them. Athena is Zeus virgin daughter and no one has used her in that way. She is too important to be used as being enjoyment for men; they depend on her for their own welfare.

Another woman that plays a big role in this epic is Calypso. Calypso is a nymph, a child of Zeus, and lives on an island in the middle of the ocean. One day a man named Odysseus is sent to her by the god of the sea, Poseidon, because Poseidon was mad because Odysseus had blinded his son, the Cyclops. It is on this island that another woman is used as a sexual toy and is not thought of for her own achievements, but rather for her beauty, and the fact that she is the daughter of Zeus.

Men in The Odyssey only value women who they can use for physical needs and wealth, such as the women in the underworld that Odysseys encounters, and Penelope. Homer shows us how men in The Odyssey consider women less important than men. We rarely hear of women throughout the book. When we do, we are shown that men did not consider women important and are careless with their relationships with women, as we see in Odysseus relationship with Penelope.

While Odysseus expected Penelope to stay faithful even after he was gone for twenty years and was unfaithful to her many times, through his relationship with Calypso. But today women are able to have accomplishments other than those of Penelope and the other woman Odysseus encountered in the underworld; they have the same opportunities and are treated as equals by men.

I think that homosexual couples should be able to get married and have the state recognize it. Why should only Vermont legalize this? Is this fair to the homosexual people of the United States? What makes a heterosexual couple different from a homosexual couple?

Marriage is about showing how much love you have for another person and how committed you are to that person. So why shouldnt it be ok for two guys or two girls to show yes we are in love and we will be together forever? Think about this how much courage it takes for any gay couple to say I want to take the next step in our life together and have people know we are together for life. Why shouldnt they be able to do this? I was reading about the first gay marriage took place on October 1,18. These two guys had been together for forty years before they had gotten married, they are also still together. So, I guess thats not good enough for people right? Have you ever heard of a couple before this being together for forty years before marriage? Even so why arent they married?

When a homosexual "comes out" it is very hard for that individual. Many thoughts that could come true go threw their head. Like they could be killed, beaten, disowned by their parents, loose friends, and if some of this builds the person could end up committing suicide.

What is the difference between a same sex marriage and heterosexual marriage, besides the obvious? Homosexual couples can adopt children and if you ask some people they will tell you that the child most likely will not be gay and that the child has two great parents. I have not heard any good excuse why homosexual marriages arent noticed by the state. I have never heard anything bad about homosexual couples that are married in Vermont. So why can this be so bad? I admit and homosexual couples will admit that they do have problems in marriage just like heterosexual marriages. So why is it not ok for homosexual couples to have the rights like heterosexual couples? Cheap University Papers on Homosexual Marragies

I truly think it is alright for gay marriages, they deserve the rights like everyone else. It is complete stupidity and hatred is why homosexual marriages arent happening. This is like people with white skin hating people with black skin! SO WHY IS IT THIS WAY?
