The sun sleeps as the desolate city streets await the morning rush hour. Driven by an inexplicable force, I enter the building along with 14 other hockey players, inching my way toward the cold, dark locker room of the Mc Farland Ice Arena. As we walk in, the lights come on with the hum of electricity waking up from a long nights sleep. All together at the speed of a slug we get into our equipment. Always watching the clock to make sure we dont add any skating on to the already painful practice awaiting. Walking out of the locker room seeing the coach already on the ice, ready for action, makes it seem 50 degrees colder. We quickly respond with a set of warm-up laps and stretches. When we are finished warming up, our coach gathers us at center ice. He offers no friendly accolades, just a rigid regimen of drills, commands, and exhortations.
Four more "wallies" and we are done. A quick shower, and a two minute drive to school. Then its back to the rink; the afternoon consists of dry land training and jogging. Tomorrow we start it all again. Our daily ritual is to make every play as flawless as it can be. Our final objective is to beat the opponent we face at the end of the week. We play along with this ritual otherwise; wed still be at home dreaming thoughts that have nothing to do with hockey. Hockey is a game of strength and strategy. Every play is made to outsmart the opponent. Coaches spend hours making up plays, analyzing and researching the other teams technique, and experimenting with workout schedules in an attempt to win. Yet there are no shortcuts to winning, and workouts are agonizing.
My first hockey practice was when I was five years old. It was so incredibly hard and I loved it. Getting to go crazy, slipping around, and swinging a stick, all without getting in trouble was a dream come true. I had so many pads on I could have taken a 0 mile per hour slap shot. The practices were all basics and I knew it, but the main focus was to have fun, and to win. In that first season I only remember one game. Our goalie was sick and no one else knew what a goalie was. I decided to give it a try, and to my liking I got my first ever shut out. We won our first game of the year and it felt great. I knew it wouldnt always be this fun. At this level, success is measured by how you compare to the other players. You were either A level, B level, or C level. In addition, each new level brings extra requirements such as off ice training, longer weekend training sessions, and more travel from home.
Sometimes during tournaments I would think about events in my personal life. My role model and grandmother died when I was four. Before a big game I would always pray and dedicate any goal I made to her. Closer to home my mother was always there for me. I cant remember a tournament she wasnt at. When a close friend and I scored a goal when we were both on the ice we would point up at our moms as a way of saying thank you for always being there. That one was for you. My parents and grandparents are always there for me. When I share my latest award or triumph story, they smile with pride, as if they themselves had stood on the award stand. I suppose I would have to be a grandparent to understand what my medals mean to them.
My familys strength has also propelled my determination to succeed. I have learned that in hockey, success comes in small portions. In life if I practice hard enough and set my sights on a dream, in the future, I can make it a reality. I am reminded of the quote, "The difference between success and failure is defined by the ability to overcome strong internal resistance."
I know that any goal I set for myself, no matter how small it may be--on or off the iceI can accomplish.
