A Mexican man named Eddie, who dropped out of college is the main character of the book. He is currently in search of a job. At the moment, he paints addresses on curbs of homes so people wont get lost. Eddies father, two uncles, and cousin Jesus are dead. Eddies aunt, who is Jesuss mother is now trying to pressure Eddie into killing the man who killed Jesus. Eddie does not want to take the gun that his aunt wants him to use to kill this man, so his aunt gives it to Eddies homie Angel. Angel is a gangster from the streets, and may use the gun for a bad reason.

After a long search for a job, Eddie finally finds a job with a man named Mr. Stiles. Eddie works for him for a while, and then there is a problem. Mr. Stiles lets Eddie use his truck to take some things to the dump. Eddie drops off the stuff, and then decides to go home and get washed up, so he would look presentable when he gets back to Mr. Stiles house, so he parks the car and then goes into the house. When he comes back out side, he finds out that the car has been stolen. To make things even worse, the person who stole the truck was involved in the assault of a man. Jose, Eddies long time friend, is with Eddie, when they spot the truck. As they spot the truck, an unknown man stabs Jose twice. Jose has to go to the hospital, and get stitches. Eddie had a long talk with his coach about what he wants to do in the future. Now, he feels he might want to join the army, the navy, or even the military, so he doesnt have to stay there in Fresno, because it is such a bad neigborhood, and to many bad things are happening to him. When Jose, the guy who was shot comes out of the hospital, Eddie, Jose, and the Coach go on a fishing trip. On the fishing trip, they go swimming, and the only one to actually catch a fish is Jose.

A few days before the fishing trip, Jose was hanging out with this girl who told him that Angel killed his cousin Jesus, and it was not the man who they thought had killed him who was said to be wearing yellow shoes. Right away, Eddie realizes what he must do. He has to get to Angel before Angel gets to him because Angel has the gun that Eddies aunt gave him.

Eddie goes to Angels house, and they have a huge fist-fight. Eddies ribs are messed up, as well as his lip, his eye, and back. Eddie goes with Jose to get Joses stitches from being stabbed removed, and he sees Angel. Once again, they fight, and this time, the security has to break them up. Both Eddie, and Angel flee the scene. A few days later, Eddie takes the mile walk to his Aunts house. Eddie has made up his mind; he can no longer stay in Fresno. He decides to join the Navy. Eddies aunt drops him off at the recruiting office, where Eddie along with a few other men board a van to take them to the actual site of the Navy. On the way there, the van brakes down, and that is how the story ends.
