"Has your attitude toward capital punishment been reinforced,

challenged or changed by the book Dead Man Walking?"

It has always been my personal belief that there is a better way of

deterring crime than the death penalty. Death is such a strong Cheap College Papers on Death

reaction to a crime, no matter how gruesome it is. True; murderers

need to be punished. A murderer should be locked away for life with no

chance for parole however, not killed in cold blood by a few men the

government has hired. The book, Dead Man Walking, has only

strengthened my belief and arguments against the death penalty.

The book states many reasons why the death penalty is nothing more

than a show of power by the state it is instituted in. The book tells

how the public is greatly misinformed when it comes to the death

penalty. 70 percent of the nation agrees with the death penalty (186

Gallup Poll), but after learning more about it, only 4 percent do.

(Pg 116)This is a great change. The public is not informed to the

extent where they should have opinions on the subject. Doesnt the

Bible say, "Thou shall not kill?" And how does one punish a murderer?

I believe that the correct answer is not by frying them in an electric

chair, but by letting them live a 'natural life in prison.

The Death Penalty as the nation knows it IS inherently biased. Most

death row inmates are minorities, or the very poor. (Pg 4) This can

be directly linked to the quality of legal council that these

minorities receive. Most of the inmates on Death Row could not afford

private attorneys. These inmates were assigned lawyers by the state

that were sorely lacking in skill. Sonnier and Willie, when given

lawyers to help appeal their cases had small things that could have

been raised during the original trial about lawyer malpractice or

ignorance that could have changed the whole complexion of the case.

(Pgs 6, 7, 40; pgs 160-16) As stated in the book, those in high

positions in society, or more often white, did not get on death row as

much (or sometimes even prosecuted!). (Pg 48-4) The quality of

private lawyers helped these people to reduce their sentences to life

in prison, or life with the possibility of parole. How is this an

equal opportunity punishment?

As proven in great detail in the book, capital punishment is not even

a cost-effective way of getting criminals off the street! Life

imprisonment is a much cheaper option for murderers. It was estimated

that the death penalty process in Florida, with all of its appeals,

court dates, etc. could cost as much as $.18 million, with life

imprisonment only costing $516,000. (Pg 1-0) This is a very

different angle of approach when it comes to fighting the death

penalty, but one that targets the wallets of the American people and

their representative government.

Life is not something that humans should have the power to take. (Pg

10) True, murderers have taken what is not theirs, but the government

should not exercise its 'right to dole out judgment on those it feels

worthy of death. God gave life, and ONLY God should be able to take

it. (Pg 1) This is fundamental, yet true. In states with the death

penalty, the rate of murder actually INCREASES in some cases. The

death penalty peaked the year before the death penalty was taken away

in Canada (175). (Pg 110, 1) The death penalty is the government

overstepping its role of caregiver by trying to shock and terrify other

murderers out of crime by killing a few off.

Dead Man Walking only reaffirmed my beliefs on the death penalty.

Before I read the book, I felt that life imprisonment was a better way

to punish murderers, if only that the thought of their murder would be

torture enough. My opinions have not changed; there should be no death

penalty. God is the only one who can take life, and it should go back

that way.
