The Clint Water Tower

It stands high above the town of Clint looking down on us everyday. The Clint water tower has been a part of this town since and has not only served us for water purposes it has also gave us a sense of pride and made all who see it every day feel at home in the small, tight knit town of Clint. I see this water tower every day without knowing its purpose, how long its been here or if it even has water in it at all. In this report I will not only let you know how a water tower works or what it does for a community. I will also take you through a journey in which a fellow classmate and me took to scale the infamous Clint water tower.

How A Water Tower Works

Have you ever experienced a water failure? That is, have you ever turned on your faucet and found that no water came out of it? If you get your water from a municipal water system the answer is probably no. We have power failures all the time. Cable TV goes out all the time to and although less common, the phone system goes down ever so often. But the water in any city or suburb is always there. Water pressure is very reliable. A big reason for that level of reliability is the water tower. Water towers can be seen everywhere, especially in flat areas full of small towns (Just like Clint). A water tower is an incredibly simple device. Although water towers come in all shapes and sizes, they all do the same thing. (Mauricio Fugacious) A water tower is simply a large, elevated tank of water. The water tower in Clint is about 165 feet tall and holds about 1million gallons of water. For more information on the Clint water tower and how it works I contacted Mauricio Fuentes a maintenance technician for El Pasos water utility services

F.FWhy are water towers so high of the ground?

M.FWater towers are tall to provide pressure. Each foot of height provides 0.4 PSI of pressure. The Clint municipal water supply runs at between 50 and 100 PSI. The water tower must be tall enough to supply that level of pressure to all the houses and businesses in the area of the tower.

F.FHow big is the tank of the tower?

M.FA water towers tank is normally quite large. A normal in ground swimming pool in someones backyard might gold something like 0,000 or 0,000 gallons, and a typical water tower might hold 50 times that amount!

F.FHow much of that water is used everyday?

M.FA water towers tank is sized to hold about a days worth of water for the community served by the tower.

F.FHow does the water circulate to each one of its destinations?

M.FThrough pumps located near the water tower and at the treatment plants.

F.FWhat happens if the pumps go down, lets say in a power failure or something like that?

M.F If the pumps fail the water tower holds enough water to keep things flowing for about a day.

F.FWhat are the advantages of a water tower.

M.FOne of the big advantages of a water tower are that it lets a municipality size its pumps for average rather than peak demand. This saves a community a lot of money.

F.Fwhere does the water that is in the tower come from?

M.FWell some come from the Rio Grande and In Clint I think some of it comes from a well.

F.FWhere is the water treated?

M.FIt is treated at the Robertson-Umbenhauer Water Treatment Plant on

800 Canal St.

With the help of Mr. Fuentes we were able to learn all about how the Clint water tower works, what purpose it serves and why it is such a necessary part of this community and so many others. I guess that answers one of my questions. I still would like to know why the water tower seems to give this community such a sense of pride and devotion to the town, lets find out.

The Water Tower And The Community

Could it be that its the only way to spot the town of Clint from more than a mile a way. Or is it simply that the words Clint although faded but still visible on the top of the tank make us feel honored to live in such a "friendly" town. If you were to ask me I would disagree but many of this towns veterans seem to think that Clint is the place to be. Thats probably why they have spent almost their whole lives here. When you ask anyone to tell you one object that reminds him or her of most of Clint they will probably tell you the water tower. Well that or the Quick n Eze but thats a different story. Any way lets find out whats so mysterious about the notorious Clint Water Tower.

To do this I went to the only people I knew who had ever climbed the tower or so they say they did. Chris and Michael Franco

F.FWhen did you climb the tower?

C.FSummer of 7 my eighth grade year

F.FWhat made you do such a thing?

C.FI wanted to go down in "C-Town" history plus there was nothing else to do that night.

F.FAny proof of climbing the tower.

C.FIf you look closely at the side of the tower facing the high school we tagged an X in black paint on the tank.

F.FWhat was the best part about climbing the tower.

C.FThe bragging rights and the rush I got while doing it.

Now that I had heard about what it means to actually climb the tower I had to do it for myself.

The Future

How long will the water tower be a part of the Clint community? Most say forever but there are those who think of it as an eyesore and when the water stops flowing through the tower what will become of it. With technology changing our lives everyday it is assumed that the water tower will be no exception. The only question now is will it stay as a monument to this town or will it be torn down like water towers of old. I guess we will just have to wait and see. Personally I think it is a beautiful sight plus its a lot nicer than Fabens tower.

The Climb

We didnt set a time or date to actually climb the tower but we knew it was going to go down. At about 0 On Thursday December 1th 00 Tony Alvarado a fellow student called me and said if I was ready to do it that night. I told him that I was "down" and he said he was going to call me at 110 so we could do it around 100. When he called I woke up and he arrived at my house around 1145 and knocked on my window. I snuck out of the house and we walked a short distance to the tower, taking a few pictures of the tower along the way. Equipped with a rope and hope we scoped out the area and decided to leave the ropes behind because it would take too long to climb it with them.

What we were about to do was very risky due to the fact that the town police station was directly under the tower. Which I must mention was not their when Chris and Michael Franco scaled the tower. We noticed that the police cars were gone and we decided to do it. Tony said "whose gonna go first" I quickly replied "you". He ran and jumped onto the ladder I was not too far behind. As we were about half way up I caught up to Tony because he was getting tired. It was then that we spotted a sheriffs car of in the distance. We froze and hoped that he would not spot us luckily he did not he simply slowed down and we watched him drive of into the distance. It was then that I heard a voice saying, "are they climbing it". It was at that point that I began to get scared because it would not be the first time I had been caught by the police. The people who were down their were the jr. highs security guards. As one went running to in my opinion to call someone we continued our accent.

When we approached the final steps the sound of our feet hitting the ladder woke the pigeons which were nesting atop the tank base. There were even a few dead ones in which we had to maneuver around. Tony said that there was a bar blocking us so I shouted, "lets go down" in fear of getting caught. Just as I told him this he was able to somehow open the lock. He proceeded to the base of the tank and I followed but did not stand completely atop the tank base. I simply sat down on it and looked down at the security guard saying, "get down here" and I did just that. I shouted to Tony lets go as he turned to take a picture of me. He was slow to come down because he was taking pictures so I was forced to either leave him up there or go speak to the security guard. So I spoke to the security guard and gave him false names and information as I waited for Tony to get down. As I left the security guards side and went to talk to Tony I ignored the security guards yells to go back and asked Tony if he wanted to run. So we did as the security guard said we could do this the easy or hard way. His voice faded and I knew exactly where to run seeing as how that was my neighborhood n all.

We ran for a while and finally arrived at a friends house. Exhausted we entered the back door and found our friend lying on the floor of her living room. We told her what we had done and then waited a while to make sure the coast was clear. Even though I dont live more than a block away from her she took us home to be sure we didnt get caught. As I quietly went back into my house Tony went to his I tried to go to sleep. I could not stop thinking about what we had just done and hoping that we would not get caught.

Well their you have it I no longer have any questions about the ill-famed Clint water tower. I have found out how it works, why its so important to the community, and best of all how it feels to actually climb the thing. It was an experience I will never forget and will be able to tell my friends and children when IM older. So whenever I come back to this town (Hopefully IM not living here) I will look at the tower and remember all the good times I had in this town.

What is ambition? Ambition is a passionate desire for rank, fame, power, or to achieve a particular end. Like any other personality traits, ambition, has its positive and negative flip side to them. Positively, ambition is what keeps most of us going on with life, to have the urge to succeed and not to restrict ourselves by physical or mental territory. Positive ambition seeks beneficial goals. Without the ambition in one, life could possibly be very dull and nothing could be accomplished. Those with ambition are the ones that we look up to in our everyday lives. Those whom we look up to are our leaders, educators, heroes, and our inventors. President George Bush is an example of the positive ambition because he is our leader and he has set goals to improve the nation in every aspect. Teachers, professors and many other educators hope to pass on their knowledge on to the younger generations. As for the inventors their positive ambitions are to improve everyday living, whether it is simplify way of living or to live longer. The positive side of ambition consists of motivation for the achievement to head towards the particular ending.

Nonetheless, ambitions can lead to a constant of striving without achieving, or having an empty pursuit which provides with no resolution. Greed and jealousy also incorporates into the negative ambition because if one desires power, one may also lead up to the greed in desiring even more power. In Shakespeares Julius Caesar, the flip side of ambition is shown in the crucial speeches made by Anthony and Brutus, after Brutus assassinated Julius Caesar. Both the greed and jealousy were in Brutus blood because he opposes the ascension of any single man to the position of dictator, and he fears that Caesar aspires to such power. In the two crucial speeches, Anthony and Brutus explain to the crowd of citizens as for the reason of the assassination of Julius Caesar. Brutus tells the crowd that Caesar was an ambitious man. Caesar was hypothetically negatively ambitious because he had no set goals, therefore, he will not have any directions in the future. Without a doubt, both men tried to lure the crowd to their point of view and to call their opponents the traitor of Julius Caesar. Negative ambitions pursue success and pleasure with a self-centered motivation. When Caesar was assassinated, Brutus has shown that once one decides to use violence to further ones quest for power, the desire gradually grows to a point where it is difficult to stop.

Since the beginning of time, man has been fascinated with the universe outside of our own planet. A natural urge to explore the extraterrestrial has always engulfed the human spirit. From the early ages of society, man has been particularly intrigued by Mars. The Egyptians referred to it as "the Red One," and the early Babylonians called it the "Star of Death." With modern technology constantly advancing, it has become possible to not only wonder about the marvels of our universe, such as Mars, but it has become possible for man to visit and explore these wonders. The only question remaining is, "Is it worth the time, money, human labor, and much more that would go into a manned mission to Mars?"

Many people hold the answer to this question as an obvious yes, and also believe that we must do this for the sake of mankind. These people, however, are saying this out of ignorance to the facts and due to their primitive exploratory instinct. It is clear to see that they have not taken into consideration all the aspects and components which would go into a manned mission to Mars. It is true that we could gain much from a manned mission, but what we could gain is little more than "bragging rights" in saying that humans landed on Mars. The actual knowledge and human experience which could be gained from a manned mission to Mars is far outweighed by the costs, potential problems associated with the mission, and health risks to the astronauts. Thus, at the current time, humans should not be sent to explore the "Red Planet."

Mans history of actually placing foot on an extraterrestrial body is very limited. Space shuttle Apollo 11, carrying Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, which was the first manned flight to ever land on the moon set down July 0, 16. Since their exploration, only ten other men have ever walked on the moons surface. (Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About the Moon). These missions have opened new doors for mankind which were previously inaccessible. Moon missions last just over five days, whereas a mission to Mars would last a considerably longer time. Physicists have proved that the shortest possible journey to Mars would last around twenty-one months, nine months each way, and a three month stay on the surface to compensate for the orbit of Mars around the sun in contrast to that of Earth. (Odenwald).

The duration of this mission brings many factors into consideration. First, the cost of the mission would be extreme, and would take money away from important uses on Earth. The initial journey of man to the moon cost NASA close to $5 billion. There is a vast array of estimates ranging anywhere between $0 billion and $1 trillion for the round-trip manned mission to Mars. However, the least expensive of these ways are undoubtedly to be ruled out by NASA, for they involve un-testable, un-guarenteeable, and potentially dangerous ways of travel; these include harvesting fuel from Mars along with other illogical solutions. (Should We Send Men to Mars?) The most recent comprehensive estimate of a manned trip to Mars, a journey taking more than 15 times as long as a mission to the moon to complete, is in the range of $500 billion. (Human Exploration of Mars).Custom writing service can write essays on Men to Mars: Misplaced Priorities

The $500 billion would not all be raised in one year, but rather would be raised over a period of ten years by slight tax increases to the public. Donations would aid to the goal, but would not nearly come close to being entirely sufficient to fund the mission. This is where many questions arise. Would it not be more logical and infinitely more beneficial to mankind if these funds rather than going to an unneeded manned mission to Mars went instead to assist in problems here on Earth? Programs such as Welfare, Social Security, Medicare, and many other financial aids could benefit tremendously from this raise in taxes, should it be issued at all. These issues of securing and protecting the American people are much more important than space travel which would effect far fewer people. Moreover, the pathfinder missions to Mars cost only $ billion to complete and these could be replicated and improved for a cost which is not substantially greater if we need to send anything to Mars. (Should We Send Men to Mars?). Sending probes to Mars as we have done is much more cost effective in the sense that when men are walking on Mars, they are confined to their space suit. This takes away their ability to feel, smell, taste, and hear, and the only other humanly sense left is sight which we can just as efficiently accomplish by means of a robot.

Continuing, there are hundreds upon thousands of potential mechanical problems which could arise and be unfixable in the course of the nearly two-year mission. Human error is always a potential risk when parts and instruments of the shuttle must be designed, measured, and sometimes manufactured by humans. On January 8, 186, Space Shuttle Challenger exploded killing all its members 7 seconds after takeoff. This was, of course, not planned nor expected, and despite many technological advances since this, it is still impossible to predict any catastrophic events like this. (The Crew of the Challenger Shuttle Mission in 186). Along these lines, no manned mission has ever been launched for such a great duration of time. Thus, we are unaware, and can not simulate on Earth the potential effects of a two year trip. Any trip into outer space leaves very little room for human error, but on a mission, the first of its kind, lasting twenty-one months, the margin for error is even less as the chance of error is exponentially greater.

As with all ventures to previously unexplored places, there is also the constant risk of the unknown. NASA can attempt to account for every possible scenario, but there may be unknown effects to the men and machinery once they land on the Martian surface. There are potential effects of space radiation and other dangers, which we may be ignorant to. There will also be neither repair facilities nor specialists on board, and if something is to go wrong, it may be impossible with the available equipment to repair damage to the shuttle. (The Crew for the Manned Mission).

The absence of repair facilities, and the potential mechanical problems is a much more serious threat the threat posed to the health of the astronauts who command this mission. Without medical facilities on board, there would be no way to treat bleeding ulcers, heart attacks, broken bones, and any other medical problem which may occur. Dr. Arnauld Nicogossian confirms, You cannot do telemedicine like we do, or abort (the mission), on the way to Mars, (Space doctors say Whoa to sending people to Mars). These conditions which could be treated on Earth may be fatal without a chance of resuscitation in orbit.

Space radiation is also another fact to be considered when accounting for potential medical dangers in this mission. It is unknown whether space radiation could cause cancer or not in the astronauts, but it is a likely possibility. Nicogossian, NASAs top doctor, is still worried and uncertain to the effects of radiation, and while there is uncertainty, there should not even be a consideration to sending men who could be harmed by unknown causes. Furthermore, Dr. Jerry Linenger questions whether or not astronauts will be fit to walk on Mars when they arrive, let alone be healthy when they return to Earth. Many men who enter space skip or slack on their workouts. This was once thought to be the cause of bone deterioration upon return to Earth, however, new studies show that even those who constantly work out while in orbit lose nearly as much bone mass as those who skip workouts, and they are in a very weakened condition upon their arrival home. (Space doctors say Whoa to sending people to Mars).

Ultimately, there are many concerns associated with a manned mission to explore Mars which cannot be ignored. There are extreme costs; money will be spent which could be put to better use for causes right here on Earth. There are also potential mechanical problems which have affected missions in the past and could possibly negatively impact a mission to Mars. Losses from this of not only money but also human life could be great. Finally, the health risks to the astronauts are great and some dangers are presently unknown. And, until these issues can be resolved, humans should not be sent to explore Mars.
