The groups eventually found common ground and together formed the National American Woman Suffrage Association (NAWSA) in 180. Ultimately, the issue of suffrage united nearly all women in a way in which no other cause or issue before or since had. While often considered a mainly middle-class battle, women of virtually every class, rank, and file, black women and working-women as well, participated if to a somewhat lesser degree.

Their strategy was as ingenious as it was effective. Increasingly, the NAWSA transitioned its rhetoric from radical to moderate and reasonable and thus gain a wider acceptability socially. Rather than challenge traditional roles of men and women, they sought to play upon them. They used their perceived moral superiority as an argument that the vote would give them an additional tool with which to help them better serve their husbands and families.
