Both Kafka and Joyce examine the illusions that pass our subjective realities, Joyce testing the extent of love and Kafka digging deep into the loyalties of family and place of the worker. Joyce builds up to a high understanding once his character has discovered his illusions, while Kafka starts off with his character understanding his illusions subconsciously and works towards a placing both the conscious and subconscious mind.
