Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein, describes the events that occur in a young scientists life in this incredible yet horrific book. This is a story told by Victor Frankenstein, a scientist, to Robert Walton, a sea captain. Victor, as a young boy, is fascinated with natural science and ultimately produces a monstrous creature. Victor finds that the creature is frightening and rejects it. When the creature goes into various villages and towns, people are fearful and hurt him. Finally, the creature resorts to murder and kills the people closest to his creator, Victor. The monster also has a story to tell when he finds Victor in the mountains. When the monster finds that humans reject him, he flees in to the woods and finds a poor family living in a cottage. He is, at first sensitive, when he watches the DeLacey family. He learns their language and even helps them with a few chores secretly. After a year of watching the family, the monster decides to meet them. After being rejected for the third time, he gets vicious and destroys everything in sight. He sets out to murder Victors brother. He continues to kill other people that are close to Victor. He soon finds Victor and demands a female creature. Victor at first consents, but at the last minute, backs out. Furious, the monster kills Victors wife and friend. Wanting revenge, Victor hunts the monster all the way up to the North Pole, where he meets Robert Walton. Cold, tired, and hungry, he tells his story to Robert and soon after dies. After Victor dies, Robert meets the monster and the creature tells his story and promises to burn himself. Victor Frankenstein changes in many different ways throughout the novel, but at the end is still the ambitious boy he used to be. At the beginning of the book, the reader finds that Victor is ambitious and eager to learn about science. He reads constantly and learns everything he can in the subject. "I read and studied the wild fancies of these writers with delight; they appeared to me treasures known to few besides myself " (Shelley 5). This quote shows Victors early eagerness for learning and reading. He kept his enthusiasm through his teens and early adulthood. After he created his monster, however, he feels paranoid that it will disturb his life. Soon, he discovers that it killed his brother and suffers from extreme guilt. Victor goes through mental and emotional changes after the first murder. He remains guilty and remorseful throughout the deaths of his family members. He never regrets, however, for creating the monster. "Anguish and despair had penetrated into the core of my heart; I bore a hell within me which nothing could extinguish." (Shelley 7). He channels his anger towards the creature and wants to get his revenge. He spends the rest of his life trying to catch his monster, even until his death. Despite all of Victors emotional changes, he still is the same character we read about in the beginning of the novel. He still believes he can avenge his familys deaths by killing the creature.

The creature is the result of Victors ambition and curiosity. He is sensitive and touching when Victor first creates him. When he meets the De Lacey family, he is loving and caring, but he is always misunderstood because of his size and appearance. "…I longed to join them, but dared not. I remembered too well the treatment I had suffered from the barbarous villagers…"(Shelley 5).It is ironic that he is eager to learn just as

his creator was. However, with mankinds rejection, he becomes violent and seeks revenge on Victor. He will not respect people when they hate him. It is only then that he brutally murders Victors close friends and family. He becomes violent and destructive and soon uses his strength to demolish everything in sight. "Can you wonder that such thoughts transported me with rage? I only wonder that at that moment, instead of venting my sensations in exclamations and agony, I did not rush among mankind and perish in the attempt to destroy them."(Shelley 18). After he destroys his creators life and Victor dies, the creature vows to kill himself. It is ironic that Victor refers to his creature as a "monster", when he starts out more compassionate than many of the other characters. Custom writing service can write essays on "An overview and analysis of Frankenstein"

The plot of Frankenstein develops naturally and occurs in a customary fashion. The book starts with Robert Walton writing a letter to his sister and telling her about a man he met. This man, Victor, then tells his story about his monster to Robert. In the middle of the book, the monster tells his story to Victor. The plot is structured in a series of concentric circles, with Waltons letters on the outside, Victors story in the middle ring, and the monsters in the inner circle. Shelley fully develops her characters, including the De Laceys. Nothing seems to be out of place in this book. Shelley brings together all elements to show Victors frustration at losing his loved ones.

In Frankenstein, Shelley conveys a message about human nature. According to "Frankenstein, a cautionary tale of bad parenting" by Susan Coulter, she says that love is not the only thing that a child needs. Children need to be taught discipline and guidance. Since Victor did not receive these, he did not become a mature adult and did not take responsibility for his actions. When he rejected his monster and found that it had left the house, he was happy. He didnt even consider the damage the monster could do. The only time he felt remorse is when his creature killed his younger brother. Also, the fact that Victor was self-educated could affect him. Victor only learned what was in science. He wasnt taught morals or social skills, which could have helped him, mature into a compassionate human being. The author also talks about Victor Frankensteins monster. It was never given any lessons on morals and discipline. It was rejected by the human race and ultimately turned against it. If the monster received proper lessons on what is right and wrong, it might not have killed William. "We can see his self-esteem sink lower and lower, the more he is rejected". He then changes from a kind, reasonable being to a murderer. The creatures education only showed him his misery. He then turns to murder instead of civility.

Frankenstein fits in with literature during the Romantic period. Romantics stressed the importance of nature in their writing. Victor goes into the woods of the mountains several times to find peace and relax. Another characteristic of Romantic literature is the individual and his quest. Both Victor and the creature are on a quest. Victor at first wants to learn everything in science and bring an inanimate object to life. After he has succeeded, he then spends most of his days, up until his last, chasing his creation, trying to kill it. The monster wants to seek revenge on his creator and ruin his life. Frankenstein contains elements of supernatural, a characteristic of Romantic literature. The fact that Victor produced a living creature is supernatural. Another characteristic of Romantic writing is solitude. The monster is in solitude for most of his life. Victor is alone after the monster kills his friends and family.

If the Fed hold the growth rate of money supply constant while the government expenditures are having an expansionary impact on the economy then interest rates and private spending will reach disequilibrium. With the quantity of money demanded greater than the quantity of money supplied causes interest rates to rise. The increase in interest rates causes the planned investments spending to decline which means reductions in private investment spending (crowding-out effect)

The Fed tool of monetary policy may be ineffective in bringing the economy out of a recession. Low interest rates may not encourage higher levels of aggregate expenditures if economic confidence is low. It may be drawn out as long as two years if people are not confident and do not spend, even if interest rates are low. This may be circumvented by overseas borrowing, use of other forms of credit. However monetary policy can be used to stabilize output and employment around their trend levels, and help prevent the recessions from getting out of hand. When recession hits, the Fed can lower interest rates in order to encourage people to borrow money and make purchases. This works in the short run, but it has to be handled carefully so that inflation isnt impacted in the long run.

Inflation causes many distortions in the market. Inflation hurts people with fixed income when prices rise consumers cannot buy as much as they could previously and it discourages savings reduces economic growth because the economy needs a certain level of savings to finance investments which boosts economic growth and makes it harder for businesses to decide how much to produce, because businesses cant predict the demand for their product at the higher prices they will have to charge in order to cover their costs. Inflation will result if money and credit rise too fast compared to the ability of the economy to produce goods and services. And it will enable sellers to raise prices. However the growth of money and credit should not be too slow, or people and businesses will not be able to get loans they need for purchases that stimulate the economy. So when the Fed tries to prevent inflation the interest rates and bonds prices go up. When the rates go up it is harder for people to buy homes and cars and businesses will be less inclined to invest in new machinery and buildings. This is the Fed way of trying to curtail inflation and maintain economic growth.

The Jazz Revolution by Kathy J. Ogren (18) looks at the impact of jazz music on popular music in society, seeking to clarify the cultural significance of jazz music and exploring the jazz controversy of the 10s. Ogren suggests that jazz music was significantly impacted by the migration of African Americans from the south , to the north in the 10s. Thus this migration hastened the growth of blues and jazz music in areas such as Harlem. Ogren explains the role of African American music, by that of " it spoke to the unique experiences of black Americans, becoming the dominant influence on American popular music"(11). Jazz music like that of music created by African Americans can be linked to African and slave music, which is transformed "…into powerful settings, especially in the industrial cities of the north", and aided in defining blacks in American society. Orgen suggests that early jazz developed through "… participatory performance traditions that began in Africa and continued among blacks during slavery. Early jazz had social as well as musical aspects… the promise and uncertainty of migration were encoded in black music" (55). Ogren points out, that jazz was music created by blacks and imitated by white musicians (1). Orgen traces the roots of jazz music to "ragtime" in the 180s, which derives from plantations banjo music (14). Like that of ragtime, jazz music incorporates blues, which expresses the Afro-American life through art.

Orgen looks at the entertainment location in major cities and continuation as performance music. According to Orgen "New Orleanss Storyville is the entertainment zone first associated with jazz in the 10s (57). In what is term "vice districts" lays the greatest economic prospects for the jazz musicians. In these districts musicians were able to explore their stylistic qualities. Orgen explains the change in environment from that of saloons, restaurants, and brothels where musicians worked for tips, occurred, as the white population became expose to jazz music. Establishing a new premise for the black musician to become recognize and accepted. Langston Hughes states, shows like Black Pattis Troubadours "laid the groundwork for public acceptance of the Negro woman and of the Negro male on stage in other than burlesques fashion."(66). Opening doors for such artist as Will Marion Cook and J. Rosamond Johnson creating adaptations of African American music in the form of Broadway theatrical aspects (66).

Orgen turns to explaining the jazz phenomena within the black community and their music. Orgen points out, "… the debating character of black music and musical performances arose long before the jazz controversy of the 10s, and issues were rooted in the evolution of music during slavery. Here one sees the conflict within the African American community over secular and church music and need to define each, Orgen states, "… church music is directed collectively to God; blues are directed individually to the collective" (11). Thus creating strife between the music community, and the preachers in the black community. Jazz music and instruments associated with it was seen as "one of the devils playthings", and musicians were caught between practicing their art in brothels and communal ties to the church (11). Due to the African American community strong religious ties many musicians found a lack of acceptance from family members. Orgen points out that jazz music can be linked to gospel music, which was not viewed favorable by jazz opponents within the religious community. Jazz musicians also faced criticism from the intellectuals within the black community. Orgen states,"…Harlem Renaissance leaders generally devalued blues and jazz… some leaders disdained jazz because of its identification with vice, crime, and migrant "backwardness". However, such leaders as W.E.B DuBois were able to appreciate its influence on the black identity and the broader American culture (11). Orgen states, there was a loose consensus on jazz among W.E.B. DuBois, James Weldon Johnson, J.A. Rogers and Alain Locke, despite their preference for "high culture, they considered Afro-American music a repository of history and creativity, and a rich potential source of creative idioms for other music forms, … each author acknowledge the power of musical performances to express and encourage emotions through spontaneity and audience participation (15)."

Orgen then turns to look at white Americans role in the debate of jazz music. According to Orgen, writers has prose numerous explanations to the origins of jazz such as ,"…jazz was given exotic lineages, such as Siamese or Chinese origins, while others insisted jazz was part of Western classical music because it was merely a way of improvising, the music of Beethoven, Mozart, and Brahms (140)." Which can be seen as a move to devalue the role of the African American tradition of performance in music. Orgen refers to the Current Opinion of 118 in it the writers states, "in the old plantation days when the slaves were having one of their rare holidays and the fun languished, some West Coast African would cry out 'jaz her up and this would be the cue for fast and furious fun"(14). One sees that jazz music can be directly linked to African tendencies. White critics of jazz music, would compare it to the sounds of animals, fearing "that jazz would led to a degeneration of 'civilize refinements to 'primitive instincts, … primitive meaning regressive"(158).

Ms. Orgen is a historian who has studied late 1th and 0th century social and cultural history of the U.S., with an emphasis on jazz and American culture. Along with this work she has also written "Debating With Beethoven Understanding the fear of Early Jazz" and "Jazz Isnt Just Me". Ms. Orgen has done extensive research in this work in aims of clarifying the jazz controversy of the 10s. She cites much primary sources gaining information from Alan P. Merriam, A Bibliography of Jazz and Donald Kennington and Danny Read, The Literature of Jazz. She uses articles from newspaper and magazines such as the New York Times, Baltimore Sun, and Baltimore Afro-American chronicles. Ms. Orgen also looked at journals Current Opinion, Literary Digest, Atlantic Monthly, American Musician, Ladies Home Journals and the Journal of American History. She used two oral history collections; The Tulane Oral History of New Orleans Jazz Collection of the William Ransom Hogan Jazz Archive and the Jazz Oral History Project of the Rutgers Institute of Jazz Studies and several other primary and secondary sources. The bibliography and notes to this work is rather extensive using as much as fifty pages. The author provided pictures of jazz musicians involved in this time period.

The author clearly set out to examine the controversy surrounding jazz music in the 10s. She was able to give the reader a clear view of the jazz community and musicians. Another aim that this reader felt was clearly satisfied was the way in which the author spent time in assessing the various issues surrounding jazz music in the black community and how the intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance view the impact of jazz music. Ms. Orgen is an excellent writer in the views of this reader. Her language was very descriptive in defining and explaining the jazz controversy. This book has increased the readers interest in jazz music. The reader found the book well written. I found more than what I expected in gaining information on jazz history.

1-What is your definition of prayer? Explane.

My definition of prayer would have to be to pray each and every day or at least try to. I

say this because how could we say we have a good relationship with God if we dont talk

to him every day, or even every other day. Praying to God is like a friendship, you need

Custom Essays on reflection

to talk to the person in order to keep that friend. I mean sure you can not talk to a friend

for maybe a month or two then start talking again, but once that happens, you need to

re-build the whole relationship with that certin person. Thats why i belive that we should

try to pray to God each and every day, night, whatever pleases you. Just keep in touch

with God.

-Do you pray daily on your own? Explane.

Yes, I do pray daily on my own. I do because as I said befor, I would like to have a

good relationship with God, and I belive that this means at one certin point of the day

you should try to make room for a quick prayer to and with God.

-What is your favorite type of prayer? Explane, Name and Describe it.

My favorite type of prayer would be just talking to God, asking him for help with things,

kinda as you would talk to a person, thats how i talk/pray to god. Each and every

night befor I close my eyes I stop and take a few min. for prayer.

4-What things would you like to thank God for/ask God for?

Well at the moment i really dont have anthing really big to think God for, but I guess

there is still many things I should thank him for, but im not thinking about them now.

The things I would like to ask God for would be my brother back. I would ask for this

because George, my brother still had so much of his life to live, and it would have been

great. Every morning while me and my dad are driving to school he tells me how much

better george was doing in school then he had befor. He tells me that he told George

a small thing to do each and every day. Some days it would be reading the newspaper,

but mostly it had to do with school. He told George to be in his seat befor the bell rings,

and not to talk to any of his friends befor the bell. He tells me this and many other things

now on the drive to school. I like it but it makes me think about George and how much

I miss and love him, and how ill never forget about him. So the one thing that i would do

anthing for would be to ask God for my brothers life back.

The Seven Deadly Sins

Wealth without work

Wealth without work is the same philosophy as something for nothing. With wealth comes great responsibility. Thats why most people (80% or more) who win the lottery or get large amounts of money in a short period of time, loss the money or the greatest majority of it within a short time. Gaining, having and maintaining wealth requires responsibility not only to yourself but also your family and society. If people give it all away then they havent learned several biblical principles about reaping and sowing, but also feeding people. The saying, "give a man a fish and feed him for a day; teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" is true. The same is true with wealth. If the man didnt learn the responsibility of wealth hell loose it, but if a man learns how to create and keep wealth, he can feed nations.

Pleasure without conscience Do my essay on The Seven Deadly Sins CHEAP !

Pleasure without conscience can be a dangerous way of life. Different people, from lying, cheating and stealing to sexual acts, can define pleasure in many different ways. Any of these actions can be cause for jail time to even death. Conscience in pleasure is a degree of conservativeness and morality. Society as a whole determines the right and wrong situations within the society. The Bible addresses the issue of pleasure and conscience in many different occasions and circumstances. Currently, I believe we live in a society that is seeking pleasure at any cost, disregarding conscience, ethics and morality. The Bible warns against this type of activity and the people who promote this way of thinking. In nd Timothy 15, it is clearly written to turn away from these people for they will be the downfall of the society. This one chapter has standed the test of time as many cultures and societies have fallen because of there search of pleasure. One of the first societies to be a witness to the world was Sodom and Gomorrah. Their continuous search for pleasure brought God to the point of destruction.

Knowledge without character

Character is developed over years of experience while knowledge is learned in a controlled environment. "Street smart" and "common sense" are good terms to describe character in this capacity. Knowledge is much needed in the world in which we live today, but without practical application, it can become a dangerous thing. Being in the military, Ive seen many different officers making decisions without consulting the people below them and the consequences that will occur. The officer may have been making the decision in good faith for all the people in his command, but because they relied on their knowledge alone, they compromised the entire command. Knowledge can be learned in a short period of time, but character takes a lifetime to fully develop.

Politics without principle

Politics without principle can be seen all over the world. Recently, the world saw in Europe when Milsovich refused to give up his position. This was a prime example of this sin. Another example of this was in Louisiana when only two candidates were in the running for Governor, one was a top leader in the KKK and the other was suspected of buying votes. Ironically, when people think of principles, politics isnt the first thing that comes to mind. Technically, politics should be centered on principles, but too many times it never happens. Even though in all examples throughout time, politics without principles have failed, but when people become power hungry they tend to forget what got them there.

In ending, all these topics can be summed up in two words, personal responsibility. People fail in life because they fail to take responsibility for their actions. All these sins are outlined in the Bible with instructions. All these sins are moral choices that have two sides; doing the right thing and doing whats right for the individual. Society and the world as a whole would be much better off if people would consider both sides before making decisions.

First of all I would like define the term, product. The word product qualifies a marketing concept. A product is more than a person, place or thing. Nothing is more important to a marketing strategy than the ?product concept?. A product is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use, or consumption and that might satisfy a want or need; it includes physical objects, services, persons, places, organizations, and ideas. In fact, finding the right product concept is one of the four critical objectives of marketing.

Toothpaste is an oral care product. Antacid is a drug while dandruff shampoo is a hygiene product. All of these come under health care products. Therefore, Colgate?s core product is a health care product when it sells toothpaste or other products in its new line. The core benefit the product will provide to consumers is total health care. For example, Colgate?s toothpaste is an actual product. It?s name, ingredients, styling, features and packaging and other attributes have all been combined carefully to deliver the core benefit ? a convenient high quality way to clean the teeth and maintain fresh breath.

I would classify Colgate aspirin under drugs, Colgate dandruff shampoo under hair hygiene, while the Colgate toothpaste under the oral hygiene products. These classifications would increase competition with other companies. For example, Colgate aspirin-free pain killer to compete with Tylenol, Colgate ibuprofen to compete with Advil, Colgate cold tablets to compete with Contac, Colgate night time cold medicine to compete with Nyquil, Colgate antacid to compete with Rolaids, Colgate natural laxative to compete with Metamucil, and Colgate dandruff shampoo to compete with Head and Shoulders. Colgate is already strong in oral hygiene. Due to this competition, there would be price changes. Colgate will have to decrease its price than other brands. This is because, people are really price conscious, and as long as the price is cheaper, along with a name that you can trust, people are going to buy that over others. Colgate also might alienate customers by slapping its name on so many products. If consumers are dissatisfied with one product, they might be dissatisfied with everything across the board. These classifications also require a high level of advertising and promotion expenditures, 5 percent of sales on year-round media alone. Industry observers estimate that Colgate should have at lease several hundred million dollars in sales to be large enough to afford the fixed costs of advertising. Furthermore, Colgate would loose its narrow focus on oral-care products and would leave space for other potential competitors to enter the market.

Brand decisions typically are decentralized and ad hoc. Colgate conducted studies to learn the strength of its brand name with consumers. Colgate believes in the following equation brand awareness + brand image = brand equity. Its studies found out that Colgate was number one in brand awareness and number two in brand image and as a result it ended up being number two in brand equity. Due to this Colgate has adopted a strategy that aims to make it the best global consumer products company. It believes that oral care and over the counter drug products are very similar. Both rely on their ingredients for effectiveness; both are strictly regulated; and both have virtually identical marketing elements, including common distribution channels. Colgate drives top-line growth by developing innovative new products bringing them quickly to global market and supporting them effectively. They are prohibiting from over promoting their brand to produce short-term profits at the expense of long-term brand equity. Colgate is a powerful brand in oral care. Therefore it has consumer franchise ? it command strong consumer loyalty. Therefore adding the Colgate name with other products would increase customer purchases even if the price were high. Help with essay on Case Study: Colgate

A product line is a group of products that are closely related because they function in a similar manner, are sold to the same customer groups, are marketed through the same types of outlets, or fall within given price changes. Colgate is fully participating I its growth by offering consumers a range of affordable products. If we look at Colgate, its product line decision includes marketing a new line, which includes products, related to health only. They are marketed through the same channels and usually fall within reasonable prices. Colgate is positioned as a high short-term profit earning company. That?s why it emphasizes on selected items for market growth and profits.

Colgate?s financial strategy is designed to increase gross profit margin and reduce overhead on a continuous basis. Because advertising drives growth, Colgate invests substantially on advertising. I would say that decisions made by Colgate are consistent because it has continuously met or exceeded its target to increase gross margin.

4.Packaging includes the activities of designing and producing the container or wrapper for a product. I would package the products under primary packaging, as in including products immediate container, for example the bottle holding Listerine. There won?t be any secondary package, for example a cardboard box like the one used to package Colgate toothpaste. This is because secondary packages are usually thrown away and contribute to pollution as well as increased investment. My packaging would be designed to protect the product as well as attracting attention in order to increase sales. It would include a description of the product as well. Better packages would give rise to customer affluence. This means that the consumers would have no obligations to pay a little more for the convenience, appearance, dependability, and the prestige of better packages. Good packaging would also create instant consumer recognition of the company or brand. My innovative packaging would give Colgate an advantage over competitors. For example, Colgate?s nighttime medicine would come a drip-proof spout and cap; Colgate?s shampoo would include a pump dispenser.

Developing a good package for a new product requires making many decisions and taking a lot of risks. My first task would be to establish a strong packaging concept. The packaging concept states what the package should be or do for the product. I have to make decisions on specific elements of the product, for example, size, shape, materials, color, text and brand mark. These various elements should work together to support the product?s position and marketing strategy. Furthermore, my packaging techniques should be consistent with the product?s advertising, pricing and distribution. Cost remains an important packaging consideration. The development for new packages can take up to several months as well as can cost up to several thousand dollars. Labels may range from tags attached to products to complex graphics that are part of the package. Labels of Colgate may seem old fashioned and may need updating. Labels should be processed with care as they may mislead customers, fail to describe ingredients or fail to include needed safety warnings and lead to accusations from customers towards Colgate press charges.

In conclusion In making packaging decisions, the company must heed growing environmental concerns about packages and make decisions that serve society?s interests as well as immediate customer and company objectives.

The second point is that they keep in contact when Nettie is traveling to and from Africa. This is more or less an escape for Celie for she does not really have anyone except for Shug that she loves so the letters are a way for Celie to keep not only with Nettie but also her two children that she has only seen for a for a couple of days in her entire life. So the main bond between Nettie and Celie is one of love, and they demonstrate this by constantly trying to stay in touch even though they dont know if the other is receiving the letters. The relationship between Albert and Nettie changes drastically from love to hate. It would be fair to say that she did not only come to see her sister, but to also see Albert which she still has feeling for at the bottom of her heart, but when she sees the other link between these two is indirect through the letters, which Nettie writes intending them to go to Celie but instead are intercepted by Albert. There are various reasons why Albert could have taken and hidden these letters, one could have been jealousy for he felt jealous that Celie was receiving letters from Nettie and he wasnt. Another more possible idea could be that he was worried that these letters could give Celie new modern ideas about female rights and Albert didnt want this to happen. The final comparison is between Celie and Mr. ______. These two were married in a sense that neither one wanted to but Celie wasnt allowed a say and Mr. ______ got a cow which seemed fair enough to him. These two both under went large changes which were related to each other. Due to the forceful marriage there was no love between them and as Celie learnt that he was hiding the letters to her from Nettie she felt something she never felt which was rage and anger towards him and this was a new type of feeling, and due to this she upped and left with Shug and divorced Mr. _____. From after this time both of them changed, Celie developed in the sense she moved on out of the roll of a normal woman and became more of a man then a woman which you can see in the way she feels about making and wearing pants. Just like Celie Mr. ______ changed and he became more of a gentelman and when their paths crossed again they both noticed the change in each other, but when Mr. ______ asked her to marry him again she just couldnt forgive him to marry him so they just became friends.

Young "GOOD" man Brown

Young Goodman Brown is a story that spotlights on a man that has to choose between right and wrong, and good and evil. Towards the end, Goodmans journey from the village through the forest and back again is turned into a self assessment about his own faith, trust, innocence, and experience. The story is about a good young man struggling on his own spiritual path, which can be paralleled to any of our lives in which we are tempted and have personal struggles of our own. He leaves his familiar place promising his wife, Faith, that he will return after one night. Brown is faced with many obstacles leading him to the choice between good and evil. His vision, though not defined as reality or a dream, he sees people he knows, friends and family, heading towards evil, but in the end he is able to avoid being drawn into the dark evil side. This story basically portrays the simple and not so simple choices that people have to make daily and as they progress through their lives. The story displays choices and consequences that come as a result of making certain decisions.

In the start of the story we meet Goodman Brown and his wife Faith who are saying their goodbyes to each other as Brown embarks on a journey through the forest. Faith begs Brown not to go because of the bad feelings she has been getting about this whole expedition, but Brown reassures her that everything will be alright, and he then leaves. This first choice of Browns is one of evil, because he still decides to go even though he knows of the wickedness that the forest withholds, instead of staying with his "faith". Another aspect of evil in this decision is that we see the village as a light place, whereas the forest is known for being a dark and unpredictable place This is the case because in the village, people are normal, happy, everyday people going about their business, which is the light of his life. The forest on the other hand is a very dark desolate place that is known for being unknown, unpredictable, and full of evil, which is generally put along side the mysterious aspects of any situation. When Brown runs into a stranger with a snake like staff we also see the evil portrayed in that regard. As they walk and talk the stranger claims they are not deep in the forest yet, but Brown says "too far", but he still continues deeper into the forest. Brown realizes that his father would have never gone in that far, but yet that does not stop him from continuing his journey even deeper. At that time he recollects about his catechism teacher, but the stranger, representing the devil persuades Brown to embrace evil and go on with the journey into the darker part of the forest. This again we can relate to because we, too, have times in our lives where we are persuaded and tempted to do things that we may not otherwise decide to do. Brown does the same thing by giving in to the persuasions and distractions from people he knows and trusts. In the story, Brown can be considered as a man making wrong decisions towards the evil side, but when the evil reveals whats really going on his true self is shown and rejects the evil and reaches for the good. While taking into consideration that Browns family and friends have fallen into this evil, he realizes that he doesnt have to follow the crown and give into peer pressure so to speak. He notices that no matter how close he is to his friends and loved ones, he must not always follow them, especially in this case. Things become somewhat distorted in the forest, which is why it becomes such a difficult decision for Brown to make. During this whole ordeal Brown remembers Faith, which is his strength in this story. He then sees his own Faith walking towards the evil where he repeatedly calls out to her, trying to stop her from making the wrong choice. About this time Brown is said to "awake", which kind of baffles the reader making us wonder is it really is a dream or reality. He is actually in a forest, but was he imagining all of the incidents, including the witch meeting, that took place in the forest. As Nathaniel Hawthorne was said to say, this is an interesting turn in the story, but it is up to our own interpretation at that point.

The following day when Brown runs into his Faith, and his friends, he notices that they acted like they did before he went into the forest, which makes Brown question himself to whether or not he had a bad nightmare, or if it was indeed reality. Either way, he is affected for life, it was a sort of epiphany and his eyes are opened, and this nightmare or reality has changed his life forever. This experience hits him hard while showing him how powerful the truth can be, especially with people that are very close to him and us for that reason. By embarking on this expedition into the forest, Brown lost his faith, not only his religion and beliefs but also his wife, Faith. He lost his wife, not physically but emotionally and mentally. Brown cant take anything for granted with her and second guesses anything she may say or do, so in this he would feel that he lost a BIG part of his wife, Faith. This may just have been a test for him to decide how the truth and false accusations can affect one mans thought, and permanently change a person. All of these with loss of faith and trust couldnt have been so clearly defined without the appropriate setting.Custom writing service can write essays on young goodman brown

The setting of this story is extremely important because every element in the story has to do with the mood of a character. If Brown is scared he sees everything as evil, but if he is in a calm state he views everything a safe and secure.

Symbolism and other figurative language play a huge role in this particular story. Faith, for example is his wife, but also his actual faith in all he believes, loves, and trusts. This is a huge part in dealing with Browns innocence and whether he can hang onto his faith, and follow his own instincts as opposed as giving in to the evil he encounters, much like our own decisions we make daily in our lives. There are many levels at which faith can be seen. There is the surface, which is seeing faith as a person, but then faith takes the role of a higher force, which we all possess.

This story basically highlights the power of faith, choice, and truth for us as people. Browns vision might have been all in his head about the people around him, or it may even be the truth. If it is a dream his faith is actually gone because how can he love and believe if he cant even trust. If it is reality, Browns own choices of rejecting evil make him a stronger person, and it doesnt affect the others around him. They are able to continue with their fake identities pretending to be innocent people, when they know that their comfort, support and love lie with the works of evil. The actual truth of Browns vision will never be certain to us, the reader, but its simply a matter of the amount of faith the reader has in the village inhabitants and their innocence.

This particular story to me can be categorized as one of innocence and experience, but also a timeless story. This is due to the fact that no matter when you read it, 0 years ago, or 50 years from now, we all have this faith, but in many different forms. We also all possess a certain innocence about us that we lose when the truth is uncovered and reality sits in. When a story has to do with feeling or emotion we can all relate regardless of how we think and what we do.

"Murder at the Margin," by Marshall Jevons, is a well written mystery novel that depicts the relationship between economics and everyday life. It shows how we make use of economic reasoning and decisions based on economic ideals that some might have no idea about. Economic theory and reasoning are used to solve a murder that traditional methods were unable to decipher. "Murder at the Margin" is not an economic textbook by any means, it is a classical detective story with all the ingredients to interest even the most avid of mystery enthusiasts.

Professor Henry Spearman, an academician at Harvard University, taught economic reasoning to his students. He took is job seriously and spent more time researching economics than he did preparing lectures for his students. Professor Spearman and his wife, Pidge, took a well-needed vacation from work and were headed to a place called Cinnamon Bay Plantation on St. John, an ideal Caribbean getaway. On the ferry to the island, Professor Spearman and his wife ran into his Harvard colleague, the celebrated theologian Professor Matthew Dyke.

While at the island the Spearmans met many different characters of people. They met Justice Foote, a former senator from a Midwestern state and then went on to the Supreme Court where he retired, and his wife. Then they met Felicia Doakes, cousin of General Hudson T. Decker (Ret.) whose daily breakfast was plotted out like a battlefield and every detail was attended to, down to the opaqueness of the bacon. Jay Pruitt and his wife were also introduced in the dining room during breakfast. A black man named Ricky Lemans led the nightly band that played at the Hotel, the Raiders. While Professor Spearman was at the beach, he ran into Dr. Doug and Judy Clark. They like going to dance clubs on the other islands and seemed to be the party type of people.

Franklin Vincent was the detective on the Cruz Bay police force. He was investigating the death of General Decker who had been poisoned after leaving the Hotel. A disgruntled man named Fitzhugh was thought to have drowned while swimming in the bay. Also, Justice Foote was also murdered on one of the famous hiking trails around the island. The investigation progressed and pointed to the leaders of a Black power group led by Ricky Lemans and General Deckers waiter. Custom Essays on Murder at the Margin

While Investigator Vincent is off chasing uncultivated leads, Professor Spearman is conducting his own investigation from the economic aspect. He takes notes of the guests trends and follows the patterns that people either choose to follow or claim to follow. He takes note of how the guest select their food and analyzes what their opportunity cost might be and then this evolves into noticing how the guest use their free time and economic decisions they make during their stay. He observes how the Generals cousin retires early to read or work on her own projects. Professor Spearmen remembered how the Clarks sent their children home so they could be by themselves and spend less money and stay at a better hotel. They also mentioned they love dancing and now they wouldnt have to travel to the other islands, Cruz bay, to do this. He takes note as to where people travel such as the archeologist Laura Burke as well as Justice Foote. Henry is so accustomed with demand, questioning not why people do things, but instead what makes people do things. He analyzes choices people make and trade-offs they encounter. He also ponders why the band plays some days and not on others where they could make the same, if not more money.

Henrys keen sense of what makes people do things that allows him to slowly eliminate people from his list of possible suspects. Professor Spearman concluded that the Clarks had killed the general because he proved that even with their children, they were spending less at their other hotel. After they sent their children home, they went to the Cinnamon hotel claiming it was cheaper and nicer. It was a non-economical decision and this pointed the finger at them. Such odd behaviors as this also led the Professor to solve the other murders. He proved that the two suspects that had signed confessions were innocent proving that they made a microeconomic decision during questioning. He explained that with all the coincidental evidence that pointed at them, they were better off confessing than to take it to trial. The signed confessions would get them a lesser term, so they made a trade-off.

He also figured that Ricky Lemans, the bandleader, did not play for three hundred dollars because something that Saturday was worth more to him than his normal performance. He again used economic reasoning to conclude that he could have made the money for playing, and just commit his crimes on another night, doubling his profit, so Lemans was innocent. Professor Spearman began to look at Mr. Fitzhugh. He remembered how he was accustomed to cutting every corner, and saved all his pennies he could. He gave the clerk a hard time when he was told it was a thirty dollar deposit to rent the fins, and he tried to buy them off of her, even though he would get his thirty dollars in return of the snorkeling fins. He also noticed that for a man that saved every penny, it was odd that the cap on the suntan lotion was left open. It seemed he would have closed it and this was another non-systematic behavior if Mr. Fitzhugh. He was a very strong swimmer also, how would he have drowned in the same water that the Professor was swimming in, not being a good swimmer himself. He reasoned that this man could reach a secluded island off the bay to hide out for a little while. When Professor Spearman took his wife to the island they ran into Mr. Fitzhugh, which turned out to be Dr. Doug Clarks brother. This put everything in place.

Supply and Demand was the bread and butter for Henry Spearmans total existence and everything in life rolled through this one principle. Other main economic laws Professor Spearman used were the law of negative returns, opportunity cost, supply cost, and utility. Supply and Demand and also supply costing was used when Professor Spearman explained why Felicia Doakes chose her price for her cookbook. The Law of negative returns helped the Professor to realize that it was odd that Mr. Fitzhugh still paid for the fin rentals even though his tightness with his money would get him a negative return from the use of the fins, yet he paid for them anyway, as to show he really needed the use of the fins.

Professor Spearman solved the mysteries through is expertise in economic reasoning. The novel demonstrated how everyday decisions we make are based off of economic laws such as opportunity cost, and utility. Down to the way Professor Dyke had purchased more drinks during happy hour and even offered to buy others drinks, yet he bought substantially less during the full price times. This novel was very interesting and for me, surprisingly entertaining considering that some people do not deem microeconomics a very interesting subject, and would find it hard to read a book on it. After reading, "Murder at the Margin," it seemed I would think about the decisions I have just made and put it into economic reasoning. I sincerely believe that this novel changed the way I perceive the choices we make. I would recommend this novel to anyone interested in economics or not, and also the avid mystery enthusiasts.

Effects of Outward Foreign Direct Investment

By Rodney Bohannon

E-mail bohannon@semo.net

The Effects of Foreign Direct Investment on the Home Country

Custom Essays on Multinational Corporations

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) could be defined as a minimum 10 percent investment of equity or capital by a firm based in one country (home economy) to an enterprise resident in another country (the host economy). The new entity then becomes a multinational enterprise (MNE). Many companies prefer FDI to exporting to gain access to new or larger markets, gain cost advantages in the host country and in response to trade barriers. There has been significant global growth of FDI since 18. Although the United States is the largest home and host country of FDI, outflows have exceeded inflows. Japan in contrast, receives much less inflows than outflows. Cultural and financial management variations between countries do seem to influence the direction of FDI flow. Strategic governmental trade policies in recent years have supported the globalization to a more efficient world economy. Companies often get governmental assistance in attaining international economies of scale and first mover advantages.

The huge inflows of FDI into the United States could be due to the falling value of the dollar in the late 180s and early 10s indicating exchange rates play a significant role in the choice of either horizontal or vertical FDI opportunities over exporting. Honda successfully used vertical FDI in the 180s by establishing high quality operations in the United States. The company utilized U.S. suppliers for machine tools and parts capitalizing on currency exchange rates and local responsiveness. FDI is often preferred over licensing in the high technology or specialized industries, and in many cost sensitive industries. Significant research is necessary to evaluate the advantages of trade vehicles and their effects on the home country. Parent companies lobby for governmental policies that support free trade in order to gain competitive advantages in developing global markets. Many businesses suffer losses for many years focusing on long-term growth potential. This paper will analyze the possible effects of FDI on the home country.

Home country governments influence the ability of firms to invest in foreign countries. The radical view of FDI was popular until the end of the 180s, and equated to the economic domination by companies rather than the economic development of nations. Radical policies were prevalent in communist countries and in Latin America in the 160s-170s. Radical regimes regularly expropriated multi-national companies and prohibited outward FDI. The collapse of communism, and the growth of the free market view marked the beginning of policies encouraging capital and technology transfers. The Smith and Ricardo Market Imperfections approach to FDI, involves maximizing gains and minimizing the costs of FDI. Most countries have adopted policies somewhere between the radical and free market approach, while still imposing some restrictions on outward FDI (Pragmatic nationalism).

There are many potential benefits of FDI on the home country. Improvement in the balance of payments can be realized through increased inward earnings, potential home country exports and foreign expertise that can be transferred back to the home economy. Opportunities to be exposed to new work practices and technology, can aid the home economy in managing and exploiting technology and knowledge-based assets. Higher living standards are also a general long-term benefit of outward FDI, due to the added value characteristics of comparative advantage, and more affordable products and services.

Outward FDI could also detract from a home countrys capital stock. A negative balance of payments is possible if earnings arent realized in an acceptable time period. Also, if FDI is a substitute for direct exports or aimed at serving the home market from a low cost location, the balance of payments could be adversely affected

Thomas Jefferson is remembered in history not only for the

offices he held, but also for his belief in the natural rights of man

as expressed in the Declaration of Independence and his faith in the

peoples ability to govern themselves. He left an impact on his times Cheap Custom Essays on Thomas Jefferson

equaled by few others in American history. Born on April 1, 174,

Jefferson was the third child in the family and grew up with six

sisters and one brother. Though he opposed slavery, his family

had owned slaves. From his father and his environment he developed an

interest in botany, geology, cartography, and North American

exploration, and from his childhood teacher developed a love for Greek

and Latin. In 1760, at the age of 16, Jefferson entered the College of

William and Mary and studied under William Small and George Wythe.

Through Small, he got his first views of the expansion of science and

of the system of things in which we are placed. Through Small and

Wythe, Jefferson became acquainted with Governor Francis Fauquier.

After finishing college in 176, Jefferson studied law with Wythe and

noticed growing tension between America and Great Britain.

Jefferson was admitted to the bar in 1767. He successfully practiced

law until public service occupied most of his time. At his home in

Shadwell, he designed and supervised the building of his home,

Monticello, on a nearby hill. He was elected to the Virginia House of

Burgesses in 176. Jefferson met Martha Wayles Skelton, a wealthy

widow of , in 1770 and married her in 177. They settled in

Monticello and had one son and five daughters. Only two of his

children, Martha and Mary, survived until maturity. Mrs. Martha

Jefferson died in 178, leaving Thomas to take care of his two

remaining children.

Though not very articulate, Jefferson proved to be an able

writer of laws and resolutions he was very concise and straight to the

point. Jefferson soon became a member in a group which opposed and

took action in the disputes between Britain and the colonies.

Together with other patriots, the group met in the Apollo Room of

Williamsburgs famous Raleigh Tavern in 176 and formed a

nonimportation agreement against Britain, vowing not to pay import

duties imposed by the Townshend Acts. After a period of calmness,

problems faced the colonists again, forcing Jefferson to organize

another nonimportation agreement and calling the colonies together to

protest. He was chosen to represent Albermarle County at the First

Virginia Convention, where delegates were elected to the First

Continental Congress. He became ill and was unable to attend the

meeting, but forwarded a message arguing that the British Parliament

had no control over the colonies. He also mentioned the Saxons who

had settled in England hundred of years before from Germany and how

Parliament had no more right to govern the colonies than the Germans

had to govern the English. Most Virginians saw this as too extreme,

though. His views were printed in a pamphlet called A Summary of the

Rights of British America (1774). Jefferson attended the Second

Virginia Convention in 1775 and was chosen as one of the delegates to

the Second Continental Congress, but before he left for Philadelphia,

he was asked by the Virginia Assembly to reply to Lord Norths message

of peace, proposing that Parliament would not try to tax the

settlers if they would tax themselves. Jeffersons Reply to Lord

North was more moderate that the Summary View. Instead of agreeing

with Lord North, Jefferson insisted that a government had been set up

for the Americans and not for the British.

The Declaration of Independence was primarily written by

Jefferson in June 1776. Congress felt that the Declaration was too

strong and gave Dickinson the responsibility of redrafting the

document, but the new version included much of Jeffersons original

text and ideas. In 177, Jefferson became governor of Virginia,

guiding Virginians through the final years of the Revolutionary War.

As a member of the Second Continental Congress, he drafted a plan for

decimal coinage and composed an ordinance for the Northwest Territory

that formed the foundation for the Ordinance of 1787. In 1785, he

became minister to France. Appointed secretary of state in President

Washingtons Cabinet in 170, Jefferson defended local interests

against Alexander Hamiltons policies and led a group called the

Republicans. He was elected vice-president in 176 and protested the

enactment of the Alien and Sedition Acts by writing The Kentucky

Resolutions.

In 1800, the Republicans nominated Jefferson for president and

Aaron Burr (A Buh. hahaha) for vice-president. Federalists had

nominated John Adams for president and Charles Pinckney for

vice-president. Federalists claimed that Jefferson was a

revolutionary, an anarchist, and an unbeliever. Jefferson won the

presidency by receiving 7 electoral votes (Adams received 65).

Supporters celebrated with bonfires and speeches, only to find out

that Jefferson and Burr received an equal number of electoral votes,

creating a tie and throwing the election to the House of

Representatives.

After 6 ballots, the House declared Jefferson as president.

As did Adams before he, Jefferson faced opposition from his own party

as well as from the Federalists. As mentioned earlier, Jefferson had

an interest in North American exploration. He used his presidential

power to purchase Louisiana from France and gave Meriwither Lewis and

William Clark the opportunity and the responsibility to explore this

vast territory. After their triumphantreturn, the hostile Aaron Burr

engaged in a conspiracy either to establish an independent republic in

the Louisiana Territory or to launch an invasion of Spanish-held

Mexico. Jefferson acted promptly to arrest Burr and brought him to

trial for treason. Burr was acquitted, however. Foreign policy during

his second term was rather unsuccessful. In an effort for the British

to respect the United States neutrality during the Napoleonic Wars by

passing the Embargo Act, he persuaded Congress to stop all trade with

Britain, a move that failed to gain any respect from Britain,

alienated New England (who lived by foreign trade), and shattered the

nations economy. Fifteen months later, he repealed the Embargo Act.

In the final years of his life, Jeffersons major accomplishment was

the founding of the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. He

conceived it, planned it, designed it, and supervised both its

construction and the hiring of the workers. He also hired the first

professors and came up with its first course of study.

Jefferson wished to be remembered by three things, which

consisted of a trilogy of unrelated causes freedom from Britain,

freedom from conscience, and freedom maintained through education. On

the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Jefferson

died in Monticello. Though not flawless, given Jeffersons

contributions to the shaping of American society then and how it is

today, it is nearly impossible to find him morally weak and coarse.

He has truly defined true American culture as it is today and has

shaped the lives of many Americans both of his time and our time

alike.

My perception of the "caveman" has truly changed. In the past, my thoughts of a caveman was a rather unintelligent, barbaric beast. However, after studying remarkable works of art such as "Woman from Willendorf " and "Hall of Bulls", which were created during the Paleolithic Period (40,000 8,000 BC.), I now understand that these people were not savages. Rather, they were mere interesting, creative, artistic beings trapped in an unfortunate time period. Later in the Neolithic Period, I begin to see man becoming somewhat more civilized and building bigger and better. Instead of using sticks, bones, and mud to create buildings, like in the Paleolithic Period, man begins to use large stones to build. Great examples of using stones to build are the Corbeled Tomb in Newgrange, Ireland, the Menhir Alignments in Menac, Carnec and Stonehedge in Wiltshire, England.

"Woman from Willendorf " was created during the Upper Paleolithic period. She is made of limestone, and her navel is believed to be a natural marking on the stone. Which leads one to believe that the artist who created her, actually looked for a stone that already had the indention already in the right location on the stone. Which is proof that the people during that time were somewhat intelligent. She is believed to be a symbol of fertility. Again, this is proof of understanding the womans ability to reproduce.

"Hall of Bulls" in Lascaux, France, are the best known cave paintings. They were also created during the Paleolithic Period. It is believed that since men were nomads during this time period, that the paintings may have been started by one group of people and later finished by new people who entered the caves. One scene in the cave seems to tell a story. Which could be one of the first ways of communication. The Lascaux artists also used the natural shapes of the caves to determine the location of certain animal body parts. Knicks in the cave walls suggest that scaffolding were built to be able to paint the beautiful paintings on the ceilings. This proves the thinking and effort that was put into creating these works of art. Again, art shows the intelligence of the people who created these paintings. So, they were very imaginative.Write my Essay on Prehistoric Art and its Creators for me

Later in the Neolithic Period, we begin to see man becoming settled. So, the type of art and location of art begins to change. Man begins to make items for the everyday use.. A tomb interior with corbeling (layers of stones filled with mud or sod) and engraved stone in New Grange, Ireland is a great example of this. It originally stood 44 feet tall. They were used to honor the dead, and to show group identity.

Menhirs were also used during this time. Menhirs were placed in alignments or cromlechs. In Menec, Carnec, more than ,000 menhirs still stand in -mile lines. It is believed that the alignments are in some connection with the movement of the sun. Which for the new idea of being settled in the Neolithic time, would have been ideal for farming. They would be able to use it almost as a calendar.

Another great monument using stone during the Neolithic period, is StoneHedge. Stonehenge uses the post and lintel construction. The builders of Stonehenge also used mortise and tendon joints to secure the lintel sections. Which shows the advancement in mans carpentry skills. Again, it is believed that it was used as some sort of calendar. It also shows the idea of man protecting his property by creating an embankment around his monument

Each of these wonderful masterpieces contributes to the evolvement of man. Little by little, man becomes a little more advance, and we began to see these changes in the art they created. I understand a lot more about the caveman and how we became what we are today. I found it interesting that even in a time when survival was the main concern, that man still found the time and effort to create art. I guess art is a necessity of life.

Respect

Nina, Zhang

SWC 100.011

The two passages that I choose are from ¡°Fat¡±. The main story in ¡°Fat¡± is about a fat man going to the restaurant and having several conversations with the waitress. Do my essay on Respect CHEAP !

Respect is the main point of the two passages, even in the whole story. It makes one¡¯s life different just like the waitress in ¡°Fat¡±. Nevertheless, the differences are the elements that can change one¡¯s life. So respect can is everyday in our lives, and it is important to everyone.

Respect is all over the story. The fat man comes, and orders lots of food. On the other words, he gives her lots of work to do. Nevertheless, the fat man is ¡°really fat¡±, and lots of people laugh at him, but the waitress is always very nice to him

Believe me, he [the fat man] says, we don¡¯t eat like this all the time, he says. And puffs. You¡¯ll have to excuse us, he says.

Don¡¯t think a thing about it, please, I say. I like to see a man eat and enjoy himself, I say.

I don¡¯t know, he says. I guess that¡¯s what you¡¯d call it. And puffs. He arranges the napkin. Then he picks up his spoon. (Raymond Carver, page 66)

When the narrator talks about the old man, the word ¡°puff¡± occurs several times. ¡°Puff¡± is the common behavior in our day lives. But when someone puffs a lot, it may because of that person is nervous. In that story, the fat man is picked up and laughed at all the time, so he gets anxiety when he talks to others. And also if someone puffs a lot in the public, the others around him will not feel comfortable. But the girl just mentions it, does not show disgust to him. She serves him as well as other customs in the restaurant. Because she thinks that everyone in her restaurant is same to her, and she needs to serve them as well as she can. It is a kind of respect. She understand what others¡¯ needs, especially someone like the fat man who cannot get respect from most of the people, so she shows respect to every custom, not only the one that wears the nice clothes. When she uses the word ¡°enjoy¡± to tell the fat man that she likes to see him eating and enjoying himself, it actually implies that she wants to see a man that really enjoys his life. On the other hand, she doesn¡¯t satisfy her own life, but she cannot find the reason. The fat man is obviously nervous when he talks to the waitress; but, in the girl¡¯s eyes, the fat man always asks for the food that he wants and doesn¡¯t really care about others¡¯ thinking. She envies him, because she cannot choose what her life is, even her love. When others laugh at the fat man, the pictures that everyone looks down upon her appear in her mind. So she uses herself comparing with the fat man, and concludes that the fat man has a much better life than hers, even they are in the same situation.

In this passage, the narrator is confused about the life that she has by that time. When others laugh at the fat man, she doesn¡¯t, because she knows that it is not right to laugh at someone like that. Instead, she treats the fat man really politely. She thinks that is what she should do for her job, but she does not notice that because of her strong desire for respect, she shows respect to everyone.

Then the fat man keeps asking for more bread, and she serves him with out a word. Until she serves dessert to him, and he says some special words to her

I put the Special in front of the fat man and a big bowl of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup to the side.

Thank you, he says.

You are very welcome, I say-and a feeling comes over me.

Believe it or not, he says, we have not always eaten like this.

Me, I eat and I eat and I can¡¯t gain, I say. I¡¯d like to gain, I say. (Raymond Carver, page 68)

¡°Thank you¡± is an important sentence in this passage. There are two ways to understand it. First, the fat man says ¡°thank you¡± to the girl, and a feeling comes over her. ¡°Thank you¡± must be the words that she has not heard for a long time. She is actually happy about it, because she feels that she should be treated as well as others, not just like a maid. The other way to understand it is that the fat man asks for breads and the dessert, then he says ¡°thank you¡± after he gets them. It makes the waitress thinks about her boyfriend Rudy, and the sex with him. In fact, Rudy has never asked for sex, or her opinions. She feels happy even just being asked for something, and being appreciated, although she doesn¡¯t know that is also one way to show her respect. After that, she says that ¡°I eat and I can¡¯t gain¡± to the fat man; it implies that there is too much work for her. So she can eat a lot, but all the energy that she gets from food burning out. So she cannot gain any weight. ¡°I¡¯d like to gain¡± are actually the words that the waitress tries to encourage the fat man, to make him feel that being fat is not the most horrible life in the world. By then, she starts to talk with the fat man like friends, since she feels comfortable with him; because they all think each other as a different person than anybody else. They have been laughed at and ignored, but they have never been talked as polite as the way that they talk to each other. They are both happy to be respected.

The fat man shows respect to the waitress by just saying ¡°thank you¡±. It is easy, but it shows all the respect to her and to all the work that she does for him. It is the simple word ¡°thank you¡± makes her feel much different; it raises her self-confidence. When she thinks that she already gets used to the life that she has by that time, the fat man¡¯s words awake her. And the waitress also returns respect to the fat man by serving him as attentive as anybody else.

The fat man and the waitress show their respects in different ways, but they all understand that people need to be respected. The reason that they know it better than other people is that they desire it from others, but they cannot get it from every day¡¯s lives. Other people laugh the fat man all the time, so it is impossible for him to get respect from them; and other people treat the waitress like a maid, so she cannot get respect either. But they all like others being nice to them. Moreover, the ways that they show respect to each other are normal, like they do to everyone. Neither appearance nor occupation can be changed easily. Maybe they are not they want, but neither of them can help it. What they need is not compassion from others, but to treat them as normal people like the fat man and the waitress treating each other.

Showing respect to people can be as easy as just saying ¡°thank you¡± or ¡°please¡±. But these words can really make difference to one¡¯s life. There are also lots of people that are considered to be different from majorities, by race, by religion, or even by deformity. What they want is not exactly sympathies or specially treatments, but the feeling that they are like normal people. Just like the girl in the ¡°fat¡± and the fat man. They don¡¯t want people to look at them differently, but like anybody else. The girl feels happy even after the fat man says ¡°thank you¡±, the words that most people can hear from every day¡¯s life. It is valuable for her because she wants to be treated normal. Since ¡°normal people¡± get respect everyday, she wants to be respected too.
