With the dawn of the 16th century, there came together in Europe both the motivation and the means to explore and colonize territory across the seas." There are thousands of reasons why Europeans traveled to the new territory. Some were seeking adventure, some searching for instant, individual wealth, and some just anxious for change. The most prevailing motivations though, were to spread religion and trade. Advances in technology made it possible for these dreams to come true. Europeans were motivated to explore new land because technological progresses allowed them to expand or escape their religion and become wealthy by trade in this new territory.

With little geographic knowledge and underdeveloped technology, Europeans were disinterested in exploring and colonizing new territories. However, at the end of the 15th century, technology movements created excitement about exploring new regions. Once enough information was gathered and technology developed the Europeans became capable of navigating across the Atlantic Ocean. Peoples interest in traveling to the New World flourished. Because technology created a way to reach new territory, Europeans were finally interested in exploring and settling on this new land.

One predominant reason why Europeans wanted to travel across the seas to new territories was religion. In Europe, during this century, a religious crusade was taking place. People that rejected the Catholic faith were banished from the country, forcing them to new territory. "During the Reconquista, thousands of Jews and Moors were driven from the country" (15). Dedicated to their religion, these people could practice whatever they desired in the New World. Others voyaged to new territory for a different cause related to religion. Europeans wanted to obtain materials found in these new territories and become rich by them. For example, finding gold was a major concern for the Europeans. They were also interested in what the Natives could bring to their benefit. The explorers took fur and skins from the Indians in exchange for guns and powder. Many of the foreigners became dependent on the Indians. Because trading was so important to the Europeans, some traders lived among the Indians and took native wives.
