Iago, the Evil in Othello

Iago is quite possibly one of the best examples of evil in literature. He is not merely manipulative as other bad guys. Iago also brings the interesting aspect of truthinto it all. He quite literally tells the best lies using mostly the truth. What can we callhim? Whether it be the devil, Satan, Beelzebub, Lucifer or Moloch, these words represent the very same idea pure evil. Not the terrible creature from beyond, or anything quite so mundane as that, but the fundamental belief of malignancy in the world. All of these ideas reach a phenomenal peak in Iago. Iago does not have the casual killing persona of a Stalinor Mao, but instead possesses the pure hatred of everything he deems to be good and pure. His very existence is for the destruction of the truly innocent.

From the very beginning of Othello, Iago is in the midst of his scheme to destroyOthello. He speaks with the muddy-mettled rascal, Roderigo. And from the very firstmoment Iago admits to not really being what he seems. He is not what he is. And whatdoes he use as his reasoning for his obvious ill towards Othello. Well, he is sort of mad that Cassio was chosen as a Lieutenant instead of him. It is interesting that Iago feels theneed to justify himself to a pantywaist like Roderigo, who entrusts him with his pursewithout really even knowing him. When he does not belief his daughter to be making thebeast with two backs(I, i, 11), as Iago so gently puts it, Brabantio calls Iago a villain. Instead of denying it, Iago simply replies by saying, You are-a senator.(I, i, 115) Agreat way to avoid reality is to merely pretend it is not there. Then, instead of takingcredit for telling Brabantio, Iago allows Roderigo to remain and bear witness. After all, what is the devil better at than casting false blame.

When Iago is preparing him for his confrontation with Brabantio, Othello asks ifhis soul and parts will represent him well. Iago gives the reply, By Janus, I think so.(I,ii, ) Now this does not really mean all that much unless you consider the fact the Janusis the two-faced Roman god. One side is completely different from the other. To Othellothis means very little coming from a good friend like Iago, but the reader must realize thatit was no coincidence Iago mentions this ancient hypocrite.

Drown cats and blind puppies.(I, iii, 11) This is only a joke, right!? Obviously Iago is simply trying to add some facetiousness to a tough situation with Roderigo. Takenby itself it really doesn’t prove anything. But, the sheer number of incidents like this makeit very improbable for Iago’s behavior to be coincidental. One of the next things Iago saysis one of the most important line of the play. In soliloquy, Iago admits his real reasons forill by his line, I hate the Moor.(I, iii, 77) This line makes no attempt to justify hisfeelings, since true evil does not need real reasons, just rationalizations. For the first timeIago freely admits that all his evil is based around his simple hatred for Othello’s very existence

The Moor is of free and open nature

That thinks men honest that but seem to be so;

And will as tenderly be led by th’ nose

As asses are.

I have’t! It is engendered! Hell and night

Must bring this monstrous birth to the world’s light.(I, iii, 0-5)

Is any more proof needed to prove that Iago is the devil? Is so, why not let himtell the audience himself? At the end of the second act, Iago is alone with his thoughts fora bit. The most interesting thing about it is that Iago is not talking to himself, but to thevery people the play is being performed for. He first justifies his actions by claiming hisadvice to be true. Of course, it actually is the truth, technically. But the truth is beingperverted. Then he gets to the real point. When evil desires to cause the greatest sins, it first pretends to be righteous, which is exactly what Iago admits to. While Cassio begs Desdemona to help him, it will only make Othello more and more sure that Iago’s pestilence is the truth. Then Iago can turn Desdemona’s virtue into pitch(II, iii, 60), which is really the whole point. Iago not only plans to destroy Othello, but by using the very pure and good part of his life that reaches its apogee in his sweet redemption, Desdemona.

The most terrible aspect about Iago’s character is the realization that no-one elseknows what is going on, except for the audience. He gives us shows just to make us see how manipulative he really is, how much he loves his evil, and that we can do nothing to save the souls of those he has damned. The greatest trick Iago ever pulled was to convince the world he didn’t exist... and like that, he was gone.

The issue relating to human development have come to the fore in the last few decades because of the fact that the benefits of economic growth do not necessarily accrue to all sections of the community automatically. The ultimate objective of social and economic changes is human development which has been defined as a process of enlarging human capabilities and choices. Apart from the basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter, other human choices include long life, good health, adequate education and participative decision-making. This, human development is multidimensional involving political, social and economic elements. It is not, therefore, surprising that countries do not rank identically on the income scale and human development scale.

India has done well on many dimensions of human development over the past four decades. Life expectancy was just years in 151 and in 11 it increased to 5.4 years. Infant mortality rate which stood at 146 per thousand in 151 came down to 80 in 11. The literacy rate has gone up from 16.7 percent in 151 to 5. percent in 11. Not withstanding the above achievements, India is still in the category of low human development as per the reports of UNDP. Further, the human development in the country is not uniformly spread and there is widespread inter-state variation in it.

The study intends to measure inter-state variation in human development by constructing human development indices for major states of India. The year of study is 11 as the reliable data pertaining to various aspects of human development are not available for later years. The methodology used in the study is similar to that of UNDP. UNDP has designed the methodology for constructing human development index with the objective of inter-country comparision. We have modified this methodology, while retaining its basic structure, so as to make it suitable for inter-state comparision in India. Further, unlike UNDP, we have included urbanization also in the HDI. Thus, the HDI in our study is based on four elements viz. life expectancy, educational attainments, real per capita SDP and urbanization.

Our study shows that though, India is in the category of `low human development’ as per the human development reports of UNDP, there are three states in India viz. Kerala, Maharashtra and Punjab who are in the category of medium human development. Kerala’s achievements are exceptional in the sense that the level of human development has been achieved despite low per capita domestic products. However, the credit for this achievement goes more to non-governmental organizations rather than government. However, there are many states in India whose HDI is less than 0.0, which means very low level of human development.

essay writing service

The variation among the states in terms of life expectancy and literacy rate is quite alarming. The gap between the two states, Kerala and Bihar, in terms of life expectancy is of 1.5 years and that in terms of literacy rate is of 1. percentage points.

We can conclude by saying that the level of human development is quite low in many states of India and there is widespread inter-state variation in it. However, we can not wait for substantial increase in income to improve the human development. An all out effort has to be made to improve it.

Essay on caffeine

What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Specify your order details, state the exact number of pages required and our custom writing professionals will deliver the best quality Essay on caffeine paper right on time.

Most of us don’t know, but caffeine is present in almost every drink sold in supermarkets. Most people consume caffeine because of the positive effects it has, however, most of us would be shocked at the negative effects it imposes. Caffeine, for years, has been regarded as a mild stimulant whose usage throughout the world has increased greatly because of the effects it has on the central nervous system. However, if you knew that caffeine causes physical and psychological dependence just after 1- cups, would you take it?

Among teens and adults, caffeine is considered an important aspect of life probably because it greatly improves mood, mental performance, and physical performance. The affects of caffeine on mood are indescribable because it increases one’s confidence and makes one more energetic. Psychologically, caffeine combats mental fatigue and lethargic behavior. In studies, it was shown that caffeine helps people pay attention to a repeating series of noises and images. It is clear that caffeine can help you focus during prolonged activities and help one improve complex mental skills. In addition, caffeine gives one the energy and strength to complete difficult physical tasks by fighting muscular fatigue. For these reasons, caffeine is taken consistently by adults and teens, and that is why it is considered very important in daily life.

Although caffeine has many positive effects, it also poses many negative effects. After about cups of coffee, your body becomes dependent on caffeine. To demonstrate this, a study was done on a group of volunteers who drank 1- cups of coffee who soon developed the main symptom of caffeine withdrawal or headaches. Depression, anxiousness, feelings of fatigue, and even flu like symptoms were present in ten percent of the volunteers. Not only does caffeine cause trembling hands and insomnia, but too much can lead to diarrhea and excessive urination. Caffeine, above all, should not be mixed with other drugs because caffeine can increase the stimulant effects of other drugs such as appetite suppressants and tranquilizers. Interaction of caffeine with birth control pills or Verapamil can limit the body’s ability to eliminate caffeine causing insomnia and palpitations or rapid heart beats. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, can be another dangerous effect caused by caffeine when consumed at great amounts. Caffeine can also pose a risk to women because it decreases their chances of getting pregnant and increases the chance of miscarriage. Increased amounts of caffeine consumption can over stimulate the fetus causing abnormal heart beats before and after birth. Caffeine, in as little as cups of coffee in postmenopausal women, can cause a great amount of bone loss. Ulcers are also a side effect of caffeine intake because caffeine stimulates secretion of gastric acid causing irritated stomach ulcers and heartburn. Because of the harmful effects of caffeine, it is essential that it be taken in moderation.

It is clear from the information above that caffeine taken consistently can have very dangerous effects. So why is caffeine taken so often? For one, food and drug manufacturers aren’t required to list the amounts of caffeine on their products, so parents nor adults know what they’re consuming. Caffeine is present in many medications such as cold combinations, analgesics, and stimulants. Kolephrin, a type of cold combination, has twice the amount of caffeine and is almost equal to the amount of caffeine in instant coffee. In beverages, large amounts of caffeine are present in Black tea, Green tea, Mountain dew, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Java Water, etc. It is important to note, that some of the caffeine from the drinks above is natural such as that from Coca-Cola. However, some beverage companies such as Mountain Dew add caffeine so that it becomes slightly addictive. Children who consume soda on a daily basis often suffer from withdrawal effects because of the lack of caffeine. For these reasons, it is essential the food and drug manufacturers list the amounts of caffeine in their products.

As one can see, the negative effects of caffeine greatly outweigh the positive effects. So why is caffeine so appealing to people? Nutritionists believe that caffeine does not pose a risk to kids and teens when taken in moderation. Adults desire the caffeine because it improves mood, mental performance, and physical performance. However, if caffeine is consumed in great amounts over short periods of time, it can cause withdrawal effects such as headaches and lead to caffeine dependency, hypertension, ulcers, etc. Because of this, it is necessary for food and drug companies to label the amounts of caffeine. One can conclude that caffeine when taken in moderation can have pleasing effects on the central nervous system which most people clearly desire.

In order to assess how the narrator, Edger Allen Poe creates horror and suspense I will look at, the use of language which is used, the narrator and how he uses direct address and how this horror story differs from a modern day equivalent.

In the very first line Poe uses punctuation.

‘True! nervous very, very dreadfully nervous’

This creates a very slow start to the story and it and it makes one want to read on.

essay writing service

Also the use of language and repetition in the first line creates a very high tense situation in the reader mind, before the reader knows of any characters it is already apparent that something mischievous is happening.

Poe also uses direct address throughout his story with great effect.

‘how calmly I can tell you the whole story’

The use of direct address is a very powerful way of attracting the readers’ attention and making them feel apart of the story. When I was reading the story the use of direct address gave me a very unsettling feeling.

The narrator frequently says that he is not mad, he thinks that the very idea of him being mad is obscene and he laughs at the idea.

‘Ha would a madman have been so wise as this?’

Here the narrator says that he is not but in the first paragraph he says.

‘I heard all things in heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell. How then I am mad.

He once again says that he is not mad but he is hearing things from heaven and hell so this surly means that narrator is mad.

When describing the eye Poe takes great care in explaining what the eye looks like and describes it in great detail, to do this Poe uses imagery.

‘One of his eyes resembled that of a vulture a pale blue eye, with a film over it.’

This use of imagery creates a very clear image in one’s mind. When I was reading this story every time I herd mention of the old man I always instantly thought of his deformed eye. This makes the old man seem strange and evil.

The calculated nature of the crime makes it even more chilling along with the admission that there was no motive..

‘I made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye for ever.’ And ‘passion there was none’

The knowledge that he loved the old man takes away any compassion that the reader might feel for the murderer. A crime of passion or provocation can provide sympathy, but Edgar Allen Poe strips away any sympathy by describing a motiveless crime.

Another example of Poe using punctuation to create horror and suspense is.

‘Villain! I shrieked, dissemble no more! I admit the deed! tear up the planks! here, here! - It is the beating of his hideous heart!

The high number of pauses in the story just before the killer admits his gilt slows the reader down and keeps them in suspense until finally he confesses.

Edgar Allan Poe uses time throughout the whole story.

The length of time before the attack.

‘I was never kinder to the old man than during the whole week before I killed him.’

The pain stacking entrance into the bedroom.

‘I moved it slowly very, very slowly’

The time taken over checking the body was dead.

‘I placed my hand upon the heart and held it there for many minuets’

All these examples show what a calculated murder this was. All through the story suspense is being built up until finally it is realised, Poe does this by explaining very slowly what he is doing and what he is thinking. He then builds up the suspense even more by talking and moving faster and faster.

‘ I paced the floor to and fro with heavy strides’

After building up as much tensions as possible he hurries to commit the deed of killing the old man and confessing to the police offers.

The narrator is undone by his inability to control his own mind, he hears the beating of the old man’s heart, so real that he believes everyone can hear it. His behaviour becomes irrational and disturbed. From the narrator being slow and calculated the final paragraphs are speeded up. The sense of panic is increased and there is a lot of action.

‘ I arose and argued’

‘with violent gesticulations’

‘I swung the chair upon which I had been sitting’

This final moment of heightened language releases all the secrecy from the story thus realising all tension and suspense.

This story differs from its modern day equivalent by not relying on special effects, goriness or mass killings. Most modern day horror stories like scream create their horror by showing disgusting pictures of bodies, with big knifes sticking through the middle of them. While The tell tale heart relies on building up the tensions gradually, and it tells he reader what is going through the killers mind. The story also differs because Poe story is so calculated and cleaver, the killer thinks of every possible thing and covers up the crime seen masterfully, while in scream the killer just tries to kill as many people as possible while leaving them in the worst looking position he can master. In scream the killer is kept very mysterious but in The tell tale heart the killer is telling you the story and he tells the reader his pathetic reason for killing the old man.

In conclusion I think Poe’s creates an excellent horror story and I think the suspense created in his story is a great deal better than that of its modern day equivalent. The use of language, punctuation, direct address and his use of time all combine to give a excellent overall effect.

Duff Brenna once said, “All literature shows us the power of emotion. It is emotion, not reason, that motivates characters in literature.” This quotation implies that characters act according to how they feel at a particular moment, without a sense of purpose. This emotion forces a character to act rashly and tactlessly. The Mayor of Casterbridge, by Thomas Hardy, and Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, both feature characters that are motivated by emotion rather than reason.

In The Mayor of Casterbridge, the characterization of Henchard shows that emotions are a controlling factor of a character’s actions. When Henchard’s emotions overcame his reason, he sold his wife and daughter for five guineas. Although Henchard loved his wife and daughter, when he was inebriated enough, alcohol and his bad emotions suddenly took over. Henchard felt that his family was hindering his economic and social growth. Rashly, Henchard feels that he doesn’t need his family as a burden so he sells them. Had Henchard thought about what he was doing, he would have stopped immediately but at that moment all his emotion for prosperity were motivating Henchard to get rid of them.

In Macbeth, it is emotion, not reason, that compels Macbeth to murder his king and fellow warrior. Macbeth tries to apply reason to the predictions of the three witches. He is “aided” in his reasoning by his wife who convinces Macbeth that he is deserving of the crown. However, Macbeth’s passion for kingship ultimately leads to King Duncan’s demise. When considering the murder of King Duncan, Macbeth’s reason conflicts with his ambition. In addition, Macbeth wants to defeat the prophecy that fellow warrior Banquo will give forth kings. Macbeth’s emotion and hatred causes him to kill Banquo, believing that with Banquo dead his progeny will not achieve the crown. However, this is incorrectly applied as Fleance, son of Banquo, escapes. Macbeth failed to look at the whole picture using his reasoning and therefore he was defeated.

Soldiers patrolled through Tikrit and the eastern banks of the Tigris river, site of a deadly attack Thursday by Saddam loyalists. The patrol began late Friday and ended early Saturday. Intended as a show of force, it was also an attempt to flush out pockets of armed resistance in the area.

We took a tank company and a Bradley company, Lt. Col. Steve Russell, the 1st Battalion commander of the 4th Infantry Divisions nd Infantry Regiment, told The Associated Press. We wanted to send a message.

The U.S. troops usually patrol in smaller vehicles but this operation came after a series of attacks Thursday described by the military as some of the fiercest and best coordinated since American forces arrived in the Tikrit area in April.

Fifty-eight Iraqis were captured after the attacks and U.S. troops seized a considerable number of weapons from a minivan fleeing the area, the military said.

During the patrol, tanks swept through residential areas, occasionally dismounting to set up security points, to check cars and people leaving Tikrit after the citys 11 p.m. curfew.

The patrol ended without incident.

We wanted to make contact with the enemy, Russell said. If they want, well surely oblige him.

“For over 100 years, Pepsi-Cola has produced some of the finest soft drink ads available anywhere in the world. From todays ‘Joy of Pepsi,’ as sung by Britney Spears, to yesterdays ‘Nickel, Nickel’ (1), our ads are as memorable as the products we produce (http//www.pepsi.com).” Pepsi-Cola’s ability to create such attractive ads gives the company a competitive marketing edge amongst its toughest competition in the market. Pepsi’s ads attract the attention of each age class, allowing younger adults to feel older and more established and older adults to feel young again and take pleasure in the “Joy of Pepsi.” This paper will illustrate some of the dynamic advertising techniques used by Pepsi-Cola such as television, the Internet, radio, and publicity.

Pepsi does an outstanding job advertising its cola products on television. Television ads have been such a hit for the company in the past, featuring such advertisements as 1’s “Be Young, Have Fun, Drink Pepsi,” spotlighting NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal; 17’s “GeneratioNext” featuring the Spice Girls and rejuvenating the long-running generation theme; and 1’s “The Joy of Cola” featuring the voices of Marlon Brando, Issac Hayes, and Aretha Franklin (http//www.pepsi.com). Today, using celebrities such as the Osbornes and the Osmonds to advertise Pepsi Twist, this past Super Bowl was an original way to interact one of Hollywood’s clean-cut singing groups with dark-minded heavy metal musician Ozzy Osborne, allowing viewers to understand the concept of Pepsi Twist. Pepsi even represents different cultures. This can be seen most recently with Latin American singing sensation Shakira and former Destiny’s Child lead singer Beyonc Knowles. In Shakira’s commercial, she advertises Pepsi while doing the tango with a grocery store salesman, allowing viewers to feel full of life, get up and dance, and even buy a Pepsi product. Beyonc Knowles has recreated a past commercial hit that previously spotlighted Cindy Crawford wearing a tank top and shorts and grabbing the attention of younger men. In Pepsi’s new commercial airing this summer, Beyonc gets out of her car at a gas station in a heart-stopping outfit and immediately attracts the attention of a young male gas attendant. Beyonc gets a Pepsi out of the vending machine and asks the speechless attendant for directions to the highway. Once again, Pepsi has done a great job using up-and-coming celebrities to advertise its product. Beyonc is also featured in another television ad for Pepsi, Carmen. Pepsi additionally offers an eye-catching website to on-line viewers.

Pepsi’s Pepsi-World website (http//www.pepsi.com/home.php) is an inventive website offering an abundance of information to its users. Featured sections include history/ads, Pepsi brands, downloads, wallpapers, trivia games, promotions, interviews featuring Beyonc Knowles and Shakira, and sports appearances featuring NASCAR standout Jeff Gordon. Pepsi does an outstanding job grabbing the on-line user’s attention in each of these featured sections. For example, if he her she clicks on the sports section, Sammy Sosa immediately fills the screen in a mid home-run swing. Additionally, soccer, racing, and football are all featured on the sports page. An additional highlight on the page is a picture of a television, which viewers can click on, allowing them to watch the Jason Giambi and Sammy Sosa commercial. This is a very interactive way of on-line advertising allowing browsers to receive continued commercial exposure. Pepsi football is another intriguing area of the sports page. This particular promotion featured the NFL’s top rookies of 00. For the sports guru, Pepsi’s sports link is an attention grabber. Regardless of their tastes, visitors can find plenty of entertainment and information on Pepsi’s website.

Pepsi also participates in radio campaigns. This is another area of advertising that has helped contribute to the continued success of the company. 11’s “You Got the Right One Baby Uh-Uh” featuring Ray Charles and the Uh-Uh girls hit radio and television airwaves and become one of the most popular campaigns in 11. In 000, “The Joy of Cola” brought a fresh new jingle for consumers to remember, as it was constantly played on radios across the United States. “The Joy of Cola” was such a success, that in 001, Pepsi updated this slogan to the “Joy of Pepsi” spotlighting Britney Spears. Pepsi projected that this commercial would be anticipated by consumers and offered an on-line debut where more than two () million fans clicked their way to Britney’s own version of the “Joy of Pepsi” (http//www.pepsi.com). Currently, Pepsi sponsors Pepsi Sound, which is played on radio stations such as 6.1 Kiss FM and

.7 BZZ. A spokesperson for the campaign introduces a new piece of music from a new or past artist, allowing those listening to the radio to be one of the first people to hear a portion of a soon-to-be-released music single. Pepsi’s constant effort to improve its exposure can also be seen with the publicity of its name.

In the summer of 00, Pepsi is sponsoring Pepsi Smash on the WB television network Wednesday evenings at 00 PM. For six weeks this summer, Pepsi will present a one-hour live concert featuring as many as five groups or artists. What is unique about these shows is that these groups or artists will not lip-sync or sing to a track; everything is live. Pepsi Smash will bring today’s favorite artists such as Blackeyed Peas, Jewel, Ashanti, Michelle Branch, and many more to viewers each Wednesday (http//wb17.trb.com). Pepsi’s concert series is an exciting and intriguing way to publicly bring its name to television viewers. By showcasing today’s hottest artists and linking its name to them, Pepsi is reaching out to its pre-teen and teenage audience like never before. Viewers see the Pepsi brand from another angle instead of the usual television commercial and radio advertisements. Pepsi’s constant exposure has allowed its brand of beverages to excel in its product lifecycle as well.

The product life cycle “describes the stages a really new product idea goes through from beginning to end. The product life cycle is divided into four major stages market introduction, market growth, market maturity, and sales decline (Perreault, McCarthy, 001, p. 70).” The below graph illustrates the life cycle.

The above graph allows one to visualize the stages of the product life cycle. By examining the graph and the stages within the product life cycle, it is evident that Pepsi, having worked hard, has reached its maturity level. A background of Pepsi throughout the years is useful to illustrate how the company has been able to remain a success in the cola industry.

From its beginning in 18, when a young pharmacist named Caleb Brandham experimented with different soft drink concoctions, Pepsi-Cola has been a fierce competitor in the cola wars, having survived financial disaster, war, and strong rivalry from other companies. Within a mere 14 years of its inception, Pepsi-Cola had expanded to over 40 franchises, even registering its trademark in Mexico. Its stronghold on a portion of the world market was slowly taking shape. Throughout the 10’s, the company was hit with huge financial loses when the sugar market collapsed in 11, eventually leading to the collapse of Pepsi-Cola, despite all attempts by Brandham to keep the business afloat. Two years later, the company went bankrupt and did not see the light again until it was bought by Loft, Inc., the giant candy company in 11. Pepsi was back on the rise, gaining momentum when it decided to sell a 1-ounce bottle of cola for five cents, the same price charged by its competitors for a 6 ounce bottle.

A year before the United States entered World War II, Pepsi made advertising history by having the first-ever advertising jingle broadcasted nationwide. When the U.S. became involved in the war in 141, the cola company showed its patriotism by changing the colors of the bottle caps to red, white, and blue. This color combination has been the company’s trademark color scheme ever since. The post war years brought the creation of television, and Pepsi-Cola wasted no time taking advantage of the new medium by targeting the baby boom generation in the 160’s labeling itself the drink of “The Pepsi Generation.”

Within 0 years, those baby boomers’ children were now called the “New Generation” of Pepsi drinkers by the cola company’s new advertising campaign. As one of the two major cola manufacturers, Pepsi-Cola works hard to keep its faithful customers while at the same time finding improved ways to attract a new legion of fans.

With each passing decade, Pepsi has reinvented its marketing strategies to ensure its place in the land of cola competition. Despite its turbulent history, Pepsi has maintained a firm grip on the soft drink market. Through all its ups and downs, the company has seen it all and yet has managed to stay on top of the competition, 110 years later.

As noted in the company’s history, Pepsi strives to give its customers value for their money. Pepsi’s ability to sell its 1-ounce bottle to consumers for the same price as its competitors were charging for a six-ounce bottle of cola is just one way Pepsi shows its determination to maintain its market status. Economic forces will always play a vital role in the price that Pepsi charges for its drinks, but through innovative advertising, the company will not suffer. Loyal customers will remain with Pepsi, and Pepsi will attract new consumers. 150’s “More Bounce to the Ounce” let consumers know that prices are increasing but he or she is getting “More Bounce to the Ounce” when they buy a Pepsi product.

The aforementioned examples only provide an overview of the world of Pepsi. Year after year, the company has done an exceptional job innovating new ways to let consumers know why Pepsi is the preferred choice. By overcoming adversity and adapting to historical changes, Pepsi has proven its dominance in the market.

Authority

What exactly is authority? Specifically in the Encarta World English Online Dictionary the

exact definition of authority is “The right to command The right or power to enforce rules or

give orders.” On the contrary, to me authority represents all things that govern my own life.

Write my Essay on Authority for me

essay writing service

There are many things everyday which govern my life, and the lives of others. However, I will

only be discussing three. They are my personal authority, law enforcement, and teachers.

I will start with the beginning of my everyday life to explain my personal authority. When

I get out of bed and after my shower, then my children are woke up for school. First they are to

make their beds and get dressed. They understand that if they do not do as I tell them then there

will be consequences that come later when they return from school. Therefore, my children, to

me, are well behaved for their ages.

After I am in my car heading to school myself, I am governed by rules and regulations.

For an example, there are speed limits, stop signs, stop lights, and other signs that must be

obeyed. If at any time I do not obey the law, then the law enforcement officers have the right to

pull me over and give me a traffic citation. If there is an accident and someone is injured, then I

will end up in front of a higher authority. That is why there are laws (higher authorities) there,

otherwise we would live in chaos.

Once I have made it to school, providing I have not gotten arrested, I then belong to the

teachers. I do not have to stay there nor do I even have to show up, but they still have authority

over part of my life. For instance, if this paper and the paper after this one does not get turned in

on time, then my grade will definitely be lowered. If the teacher had no authority over me or my

grades in the first place, then I would be able to do that and still retain the grade that I think I

should have. Consequently, it doesn’t work that way, nor do I see it working that way in the near

future.

In conclusion, the world would not be what it is today if the teachers, law enforcement,

parents, etc., had no authority. I don’t believe that we would be able to coexist with each other if

there were not someone somewhere to tell us or inform us of the things that must be

accomplished or laws that must be followed After all, what would each and everyone of us really

do if there were not someone there to say no? From the beginning of time, there has been some

sort of authority somewhere. In my lifetime I don’t think it will ever change.

First of all I would like define the term, product. The word product qualifies a marketing concept. A product is more than a person, place or thing. Nothing is more important to a marketing strategy than the ?product concept?. A product is anything that can be offered to a market for attention, acquisition, use, or consumption and that might satisfy a want or need; it includes physical objects, services, persons, places, organizations, and ideas. In fact, finding the right product concept is one of the four critical objectives of marketing.

Toothpaste is an oral care product. Antacid is a drug while dandruff shampoo is a hygiene product. All of these come under health care products. Therefore, Colgate?s core product is a health care product when it sells toothpaste or other products in its new line. The core benefit the product will provide to consumers is total health care. For example, Colgate?s toothpaste is an actual product. It?s name, ingredients, styling, features and packaging and other attributes have all been combined carefully to deliver the core benefit ? a convenient high quality way to clean the teeth and maintain fresh breath.

I would classify Colgate aspirin under drugs, Colgate dandruff shampoo under hair hygiene, while the Colgate toothpaste under the oral hygiene products. These classifications would increase competition with other companies. For example, Colgate aspirin-free pain killer to compete with Tylenol, Colgate ibuprofen to compete with Advil, Colgate cold tablets to compete with Contac, Colgate night time cold medicine to compete with Nyquil, Colgate antacid to compete with Rolaids, Colgate natural laxative to compete with Metamucil, and Colgate dandruff shampoo to compete with Head and Shoulders. Colgate is already strong in oral hygiene. Due to this competition, there would be price changes. Colgate will have to decrease its price than other brands. This is because, people are really price conscious, and as long as the price is cheaper, along with a name that you can trust, people are going to buy that over others. Colgate also might alienate customers by slapping its name on so many products. If consumers are dissatisfied with one product, they might be dissatisfied with everything across the board. These classifications also require a high level of advertising and promotion expenditures, 5 percent of sales on year-round media alone. Industry observers estimate that Colgate should have at lease several hundred million dollars in sales to be large enough to afford the fixed costs of advertising. Furthermore, Colgate would loose its narrow focus on oral-care products and would leave space for other potential competitors to enter the market.

Brand decisions typically are decentralized and ad hoc. Colgate conducted studies to learn the strength of its brand name with consumers. Colgate believes in the following equation brand awareness + brand image = brand equity. Its studies found out that Colgate was number one in brand awareness and number two in brand image and as a result it ended up being number two in brand equity. Due to this Colgate has adopted a strategy that aims to make it the best global consumer products company. It believes that oral care and over the counter drug products are very similar. Both rely on their ingredients for effectiveness; both are strictly regulated; and both have virtually identical marketing elements, including common distribution channels. Colgate drives top-line growth by developing innovative new products bringing them quickly to global market and supporting them effectively. They are prohibiting from over promoting their brand to produce short-term profits at the expense of long-term brand equity. Colgate is a powerful brand in oral care. Therefore it has consumer franchise ? it command strong consumer loyalty. Therefore adding the Colgate name with other products would increase customer purchases even if the price were high.

A product line is a group of products that are closely related because they function in a similar manner, are sold to the same customer groups, are marketed through the same types of outlets, or fall within given price changes. Colgate is fully participating I its growth by offering consumers a range of affordable products. If we look at Colgate, its product line decision includes marketing a new line, which includes products, related to health only. They are marketed through the same channels and usually fall within reasonable prices. Colgate is positioned as a high short-term profit earning company. That?s why it emphasizes on selected items for market growth and profits.

Colgate?s financial strategy is designed to increase gross profit margin and reduce overhead on a continuous basis. Because advertising drives growth, Colgate invests substantially on advertising. I would say that decisions made by Colgate are consistent because it has continuously met or exceeded its target to increase gross margin.

4. Packaging includes the activities of designing and producing the container or wrapper for a product. I would package the products under primary packaging, as in including products immediate container, for example the bottle holding Listerine. There won?t be any secondary package, for example a cardboard box like the one used to package Colgate toothpaste. This is because secondary packages are usually thrown away and contribute to pollution as well as increased investment. My packaging would be designed to protect the product as well as attracting attention in order to increase sales. It would include a description of the product as well. Better packages would give rise to customer affluence. This means that the consumers would have no obligations to pay a little more for the convenience, appearance, dependability, and the prestige of better packages. Good packaging would also create instant consumer recognition of the company or brand. My innovative packaging would give Colgate an advantage over competitors. For example, Colgate?s nighttime medicine would come a drip-proof spout and cap; Colgate?s shampoo would include a pump dispenser.

Developing a good package for a new product requires making many decisions and taking a lot of risks. My first task would be to establish a strong packaging concept. The packaging concept states what the package should be or do for the product. I have to make decisions on specific elements of the product, for example, size, shape, materials, color, text and brand mark. These various elements should work together to support the product?s position and marketing strategy. Furthermore, my packaging techniques should be consistent with the product?s advertising, pricing and distribution. Cost remains an important packaging consideration. The development for new packages can take up to several months as well as can cost up to several thousand dollars. Labels may range from tags attached to products to complex graphics that are part of the package. Labels of Colgate may seem old fashioned and may need updating. Labels should be processed with care as they may mislead customers, fail to describe ingredients or fail to include needed safety warnings and lead to accusations from customers towards Colgate press charges.

In conclusion In making packaging decisions, the company must heed growing environmental concerns about packages and make decisions that serve society?s interests as well as immediate customer and company objectives.

Art really really really really really really really really sucks. I hate art sooo bad, that it is not even funny. What is the point of studying certain periods of art when they were in like, the 1800s and no one cares about what happened back then? Its just really dumb, and I hope people can figure that out. Because if people dont figure it out, then they are really really really really really really really really really really stupid. Just like the art that really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really SUCKS!!!!!!!!

Take art out of schools and off the billboards. Dont make innocent kids get pulled into art from the old days. Most of the old art is all nude people, and who wants their kids to see that crap? NOT ME! This essay shouldnt have to be this long, but I am writing it for a STUPID art class so it has to be a certain amount of words long. I will most likely get a stupid F on it anyway, so what is the point of even doing it at all. I hate art more then I hate the kid that is sitting next to me. I think he is stupid but art is stupider. I showed a picture of art to my one year old daughter and she was smart enough to know that what you do with art, is RIP IT UP!! Oh yeah! She tore that art right to pieces. Good girl! Im so sick of this crap, I shouldnt have to write an essay about my feelings toward art, but this is the truth and this is how I feel about art.

Network Report (Ethernet and LANs)

Due date 1th September

Ethernet is a physical and data link layer technology for LAN networking. When it first began to be widely deployed in the 180s, Ethernet supported a maximum theoretical data rate of 10 megabits per second (Mbps). More recently, Fast Ethernet standards have extended traditional Ethernet technology to 100 Mbps peak, and Gigabit Ethernet technology extends performance up to 1000 Mbps. Gigabit Ethernet, a transmission technology based on the Ethernet frame format and protocol used in local area networks (LANs), provides a data rate of 1 billion bits per second (one gigabit). Gigabit Ethernet is defined in the IEEE 80. standard and is currently being used as the backbone in many enterprise networks.

Higher-level network protocols like Internet Protocol use Ethernet as their transmission medium. Data travels over Ethernet in the form of frames. The run length of Ethernet cables is limited (to roughly 100 meters), but various special-purpose devices exist that make Ethernet a cost-effective option for networking an entire large school or office building.

cheap term papers

In the mid-10s, Fast Ethernet technology matured and met its design goals of a) increasing the performance of traditional Ethernet while b) avoiding the need to completely re-cable existing Ethernet networks. Fast Ethernet comes in two major varieties

100Base-T (using unshielded twisted pair cable)

100Base-FX (using fiber optic cable)

By far the most popular of these is 100Base-T, a standard that includes 100Base-TX (Category 5 UTP), 100Base-T (Category or better UTP), and 100Base-T4 (100Base-T cabling modified to include two additional wire pairs).

Whereas Fast Ethernet improved traditional Ethernet from 10 Megabit to 100 Megabit speed, Gigabit Ethernet boasts the same order-of-magnitude improvement over Fast Ethernet by offering speeds of 1000 Megabits (1 Gigabit). Gigabit Ethernet was first made to travel over optical and copper cabling, but the 1000Base-T standard successfully supports it as well. 1000Base-T uses Category 5 cabling similar to 100 Mbps Ethernet, although achieving gigabit speed requires the use of additional wire pairs.

LANs

A LAN (also known as local area network) helps with the sharing of resources like files, printers, games or other applications. A LAN provides networking capabilities to a group of computers in close range such as in an office building, a school, or a home. In simple terms, a LAN is a something that can help connect a group of computers in close proximity and allows all these connected computers to share files. A LAN often in turn will connect to other LANs and to the Internet or a WAN. Most LANs are built with relatively inexpensive hardware such as Ethernet cables, network adapters, and hubs. Wireless and other more advanced LAN hardware options are also available.

WLAN

Wireless Local Area Network is one of the fastest growing sectors in the computing industry. WLAN provide flexibility, convenience, and productivity. Wireless LANs are a good way of providing access to network resources without the hassle of wires.

VLAN

A VLAN is where a group of PCs, servers and other network resources that perform as if they were linked to a single, network segment - even though they may not be, they will act as if they were. For example, all marketing personnel may be spread throughout a building. Yet if they are all assigned to a single VLAN, they can share resources and bandwidth as if they were attached to the same segment (see Figure 1).

VLANs offer an effective solution to swamped routers and broadcast storms. By limiting the distribution of broadcast, multicast and unicast traffic, they can help free up bandwidth, reduce the need for expensive and complicated routing between switched networks, and get rid of the danger of broadcast storms. With these advantages, VLANs do up many of the key advantages of LAN routing, but with greater flexibility, performance, simplicity and affordability.

There are also specialized operating system software used to configure a LAN. For example, most or Microsoft Windows provide a software package called Internet Connection Sharing ICS that supports controlled access to resources on the LAN.

Windows NT vs. Netware

After a little research on the differences between Windows NT vs Netware, I have come up with some solutions from a web sauce that explains that Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Is 5.5% Faster Than Novell NetWare 5 as a File Server and Has .7 Times Better Price/Performance. I have provided some graphs to show the figures. Mindcraft tested the file-server performance of Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 and Novell NetWare 5 on a Compaq ProLiant 1850R. Mindcraft tested file sharing using TCP/IP for both servers. Table 1 shows the peak throughput measured for each system in megabits per second (Mbits/S), the price of the software tested, and the price/performance in dollars per Mbits/S.

The book is a sequel to Gary Paulsens pervious book, Hatchet. Summer has long since passed and it is fall already. Brian (the main character), who is trapped alone in the wilderness from a plane crash, made it through the summer. He notices changes in the weather, then nature tests him. Will he be able to make it in the winter, in extreme, arctic, sub-zero conditions? Through the winter he learns to adapt. He learns the concept - if the world doesnt adapt to you, you adapt to the world. He made an airtight shelter to live in complete with a fire pit and everything. He learns how to hunt, build tools, make food and make clothes. And make use of everything he had. Although by now he misses his family a lot, he has a calling, a calling to stay alive, come home and make it through the winter.

I felt that this was a pretty good book. It was definitely in my top three favorites, which include Holes and After the War. I like how it was set up and created good imagery in my head by the way the author writes. You can almost see the book unfolding in your head right before your eyes. I liked how it went in a certain order following what happened to Brian through the seasons. It didnt skip around with things that happened in the past that can be confusing to read. When the author wrote about that bitter cold day I could actually feel the biting cold by how he described the forest that day and how still it was. I could really sense and feel the trees exploding. The only thing I didnt like was all of the killing of animals and the sometimes-graphic descriptions of their bloody slaughters. When these were depicted they went on for a long time and I just wanted it to be over.

On a scale of 1-10, I would give this book a rating of due to its great descriptions and detailed writing. Overall, I personally, I think this was a great novel. I loved it. It keeps you guessing till the end. It had lots of action and suspense. I liked it so much; I think Ill read it again, although Im not much of a book person.

Reflection Early Renaissance Art in Europe

During the 15th century in Europe, a prosperous middle class arose in the Netherlands, France, and Italy. They supported scholarship, literature, and the arts. Their generous patronage led to the revival of classical art, architecture, learning, and creativity called the Renaissance. Merchants began to have a rising social status. Humanism is a term that refers to the revival of classical learning and literature. Humanism promoted a “worldview that is focused on human beings, an education that perfects individuals through the study of past models of civic and personal virtue, a value system that emphasizes personal effort and responsibility, and a physically or intellectually active life that is directed at a common good as well as individual nobility” (Stokstad 61). The greatest humanist was Petrarch, who saw history in three periods the ancient classical world, the “dark ages,” and a rebirth. Petrarch also introduced writing in the vernacular, as opposed to Latin; Giotto introduced a vernacular style in painting. The people of the Renaissance had an appreciation of Greek and Roman culture, and classical antiquity was considered the standard model. Popular subjects in art were history, religion, and mythology. Portraiture became more common, and anatomical accuracy became important. Linear perspective, which created the illusion of three dimensional space on a two dimensional surface, developed. The Renaissance began in 14th century Italy, and spread to the rest of Europe in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries.

The most famous architect of the early Renaissance was Filippo Brunelleschi. He became the designer of the dome of Florence Cathedral, which was revolutionary engineering. Brunelleschi then designed a sacristry as a chapel and mausoleum, for the Medici family, and was then commissioned to build the church itself, replacing the old basilica. This church, San Lorenzo, was rebuilt with the plan of an early Christian basilica. A long nave and two side aisles are intersected by a transept. San Lorenzo has mathematical regularity and symmetry. Palazzo Medici-Riccardi’s plain exterior related to political and religious thinking in Florence, which was strongly influence by Christian ideals of poverty and charity. The building was constructed around a central courtyard surrounded by a covered gallery, or loggia. The spread of Renaissance architecture was partly because of Leon Battista Alberti, who traveled widely. Alberti was commissioned to enlarge the Church of Sant’Andrea, who began work on it but died that summer. One of Alberti’s ideas for the church was the Latin-cross plan, where a nave more than 55 feet wide is intersected by a transept of equal width and has a square, domed crossing. A votive church was a church built as a special offering to a saint. The large congregations and processions made the long nave a basilica almost a necessity for local churches, but votive churches often had a central plan. The medium of the churches and palazzo were stone, marble, and pietra serena.

A popular subject in sculpture was Old Testament figure like Moses, David, Jeremiah, and Isaiah, and so was large figures of patron saints of a church. In the 15th century, the two most important sculptural commissions in Florence were the new bronze doors for the Florence Cathedral Baptistry, and the exterior decoration of the Church of Orsanmichele. Lorenzo Ghiberti won the competition to do the bronze relief panels for the doors. The most famous sculptor of early Italian Renaissance was Donatello. He used a pictorial approach to relief sculpture, and created the impression of deep space by using new linear perspective and varying heights of relief. Donatello constantly explored human emotions and expressions and medium, such as bronze, marble, and polychromed wood. In bronze sculpture, Donatello made the first life-size male nude since antiquity (David) and the first life-size bronze equestrian portrait since classical Rome (Gattamelata). Near the end of his career, Donatello’s style became more emotionarlly expressive, as seen in his Mary Magdalen. Equestrian statues became more popular, and so did portrait tombs. To supply the increasing demand for architectural sculpture, artists turned to nontraditional materials such as terra cotta, although bronze and marble were the most popular mediums. In later 15th century, small bronzes were popular, such as Hercules and Antaeus.

Giotto created a new style in painting. He introduced heightened human actions and emotions by painting enormous figures, modeled by a natural and consistent light and acting in a shallow but clearly defined space. He was a great storyteller, and his painted biblical events were understandable. Outside of Italy, there was an interest in the natural world. Along with the new desire for accurate depiction came an interest in personalities because of the humanist interest on people. Northern artists were interested in details, while Italian artists were more concerned with classical elements. Oil paint became the new medium of painting, although tempera and oil were still combined in some paintings. Atmospheric perspective was introduced, as artists painted more distant objects with a grayish or bluish cast to make it seem farther away. Italian patrons usually commissioned murals and large altarpieces for local churches, and smaller panel paintings for private chapels. Frescoes were in great demand, and Italian painters showed little interest in oil painting. The new Renaissance style and painting had solid, volumetric forms, perspectivally defined space, and references to classical antiquity. Popular subjects were any biblical scenes, mythology, and portraits. Oil painting largely replaced other mediums.

I saw light and felt the air around me for the first time on the sixteenth of February, year 18.

Jemimah Grace was the name given to me by my Journalist and Pastor father, Mr. Arnold Garcia. Jemimah, is one of the daughters of Job, and Grace is God’s loving kindness.

From the moment I was placed at the side of my mother, Connie Garcia, the showers of love and kindness started. Being the only daughter, I grew closer and closer to my parents as days and years go by.

With a childhood completed by a jigsaw puzzle of people, adventures and experiences, my early and present life was made valuable by my mom and dad who completed the puzzle for me, placing the right pieces at the right place, and setting aside those not needed.

One of the best pieces that they have placed is the foundation of my education the New Jerusalem School, a private Christian school. Studying and learning with fellow Christians has made my studies fun and effective. Each day was filled with laughter, teachings and surprises.

Achieving the first honorable mention in prep, I strived harder in first grade and went home with a gold medal hanging on my shoulders on my first recognition day in elementary. This continued until fifth grade, not only the achievements, but also the effort, diligence, and prayers. On sixth grade, I graduated salutatorian and made me really contented and delighted. This is not only for the medal and recognition I received, but also for the honor of giving a farewell speech, the opportunity not even our valedictorian didn’t have, because her speech was supposed to be objective.

I could not really remember my entire speech but one thing I’m sure of is that I didn’t fail to recognize and thank my parents, teachers and classmates. I knew I shared my experiences and I expressed my mixed feelings of accomplishment, joy and sadness. Sadness because I was going to leave the school where I spent nine fruitful years of my life, and how I will miss all the people and routines in the school. I ended the speech teary-eyed, but I wasn’t the only one. I saw many parents and fellow graduates wiping their wet eyes while clapping.

Graduating elementary did not mean forgetting all the lessons I learned then, that’s why until now, I still ponder on one I have learned from a friend as sweet and loving as her name Love.

Learning from someone I never expected to reveal things unknown to many wise persons I know, is an experience that continually increases my value and worth as a person. I would never forget the unanticipated moment that imparted words and thoughts to me from the heart; from the longing and courage growing in it day by day, thoughts one would not expect to hear from a cheerful 11 year old girl.

That Friday afternoon, I stood anxiously behind the classroom door, waiting for my friends to be finished with their work. Leaping out with their usual sunny smiles, we hopped together to the school canteen and as usual, giggling over some silly jokes. While we were stuffing ourselves with foods,

I talked about how fortunate we are to all have a complete and happy family when I noticed Love’s familiar jolly face and smile fall.

She remained silent all throughout our discussion, and barely even chuckled when someone brought up a joke, which is so not her because normally she would laugh out the first, the loudest and the last to finish.

When we got back to the room, I approached her, held her hand against mine and looked straightly to her eyes. Her eyes tried to avoid, until her eyes met mine.

Her father has another family but the more hurting part is that they are the second one. She is separated from her mom who stays in Bulacan, while she lives with her aunt.

She was completely calm, fighting back tears as she was telling this, but the moment she admitted that growing up without a father and a mother guiding her made her feel incomplete, envious and pitiful, she really weeped.

After her recount, I felt drops of tears rolling from my own eyes. I knew that very moment why she kept it from us all these years she didn’t think she could handle the passionate outburst she would make.

Now, whenever I see my parents and other families, I remember her words “Love and appreciate your family now to the fullest, because many people are dying to be with their parents but were not given the chance… and do not take your parents for granted, because you would not want to experience longing to embrace and serve them when they are already gone.”

Her courage to face everyday with the pain kept in a small locked box in her heart and to tell a friend her real situation is enough for me to say that she is complete, a person many people should admire and be envy of.

I always remembered her words for I believe that pieces of advises and lessons learned is the key to success.

Now, I am starting to pick up new pieces of lessons at Manila Science High School where I am studying secondary education.
