Summative Essay

Death of a Salesman

One of the major conflicts in this play is created by Willy Loman and his son Biff. They have different dreams Willy wants his son to be the best and have success, but Biff wants to be himself.

This is presented clearly when the boys and Willy are in the yard throwing the ball and Willy is telling Biff what he is going to do with school and makes decisions for him. What Biff really wants is to work outside with his hands and not be stuck on a subway in the summer when it’s hot and sunny. Mixing Cement (61)

The next conflict in the play is between Willy and Happy and how he always tried to please his dad, but he was not ever interested. A perfect example of this happening is when Happy tells his dad that he is losing weight and that he is going to get married, Willy hears him but the only thing that he is worried or even cares about is Biff. The ironic part of it all is that Biff could not live up to his fathers expectations but still Willy paid all of his attention to him and that Happy could and was doing everything his father wanted. It almost seems as if Happy was the better son and yet Willy didn’t even as much as acknowledge him the slightest.

Another conflict that was a big part in this play was between Willy and Charlie. Their relationship was very confusing in the sense that Charlie being the successful businessman who has everything going for him, he has a smart son, lots of money, is well respected and still Willy belittles him. This was different because the better man is the one that is made to look like the chump because in Willy’s eyes he has everything and doesn’t need any help from anyone and is in a state of denial. This comes out when Willy barges into Charlie’s office and is insulted when Charlie offers him a job after he had just been fired, but he still asks for the loan rather than taking the job which was very confusing and adds character to Willy.

The last and most important conflict in the play would have to be between Willy Loman and his loving Linda. Throughout the play we the reader/ audience notice that on several occasions Willy puts her down or ignores her or just plain old hurts her feelings. This shows a lack of respect towards the mother of his two children and the woman he loves, or at one time loved.

The way he shows disrespectfulness to her is when at the beginning when Willy comes home from work and asks her how much all the bills are and what she spent all the money on, when the real fact is it was mostly his fault or spenditures on the car and things that they really needed. Another thing where this became clear was with the affairs, cheating on your wife is quite possibly the biggest form of disrespect that one could do to a wife; let alone anyone but your wife. To go along with that he got mad when Linda mended her stockings, we sense that Willy has a mind full of guilt.

The reason why Willy is involved in all of these conflicts is because he had the wrong dreams. His idea of being successful was different than everyone else that is what created conflict. He was reliving his life through his kids to be a success but in the end resulted in the death of a salesman.

“There is a great deal of commotion and the last page is nothing more than a playwright’s contrivance for bringing down the certain, One is left asking What was the point?”

There are many perspectives one could look at this quote from L.J. Halle. After the ending of Lord Of The Flies, people wonder did Willam Golding just close the door on his book and leave it be? Or was the book made to just end the reader’s journey of the boys on the island.

This quote alone can clearly bring up some good contiversal arguments to the ending of Goldings novel. The aspects of the book were phenomenal, unfortunately the conclusion is unfortunately horribly written.

Write your lord of the flies research paper

One could argue that the ending has various different meanings, “British boys-you’re all British, aren’t you? (Golding.0) Would have been able to put up a better show than that” a mysterious British officer appears before Ralph ending his hunters’ pursuit thus sparing his life in the act, “We saw your smoke. And you don’t know how many of you there are?”(Golding 0) the burning down of the island can symbolize many different perspectives, could Golding have just wanted to end the book by burning down the island? The reader would also look at it as a symbol to the world; the burning of the island could symbolize the destruction going on in the outside world, thus giving the reader a menacing concept of what humans are like without rules being obeyed. “ He tuned away to give them time to pull themselves together and waited, allowing his eyes to rest on the trim cruiser in the distance.” (Golding 07) the officer scolded the boys for causing such destruction and behaving immaturely, quite the hypocrite as he glares at his cruiser that can cause’s greater destruction within the real world war.

There are many symbolic meanings within the final chapter that if thought upon can be distinguished clearly to the reader. The children are placed into a situation where they had the ability to do anything they wanted and get away with it, stripped from their parents, robbed of their rules, they had total freedom to choose what they deemed was right. The parents are their symbol of order and rules. In the meanwhile from the deserted island of the boys, the parents are off to battling World War II, tis strange how Golding compared what is happening with on the island compared to what is happening in the real world, strange enough they are both the same, in both places are at war, both places are being ruined by man. The adults are a type of god like being for the kids of the island, god is looked at as almighty, pure, perfect, these were the qualities the every single boy on that island looked and saw the adults as, why would they be battling WW II, why cause the bloodshed? Perhaps because they are ungodly like, imperfect if one will, as all humans are, the kids on the island never saw this flaw, and began to become corrupted slowly, one by one by their primal needs. The luck of Ralph running into the British officer brought his pressurres out of their lust for blood, and back into reality, its as if they saw a form of god when they saw that officer.

All these facts are quite clear to see that Golding diligently had placed all these facts together in his brilliantly written book, but could one’s mind truly believe that this could all happen in reality. Is it possible to relate a band of boys on a plane being shot down from the sky, and leaving a scar on the island, relatable to men scorching earth in war, in addition to the all the characters being realated to order. For instance Ralph, and the conch, represent democracy and order, while the lord of the flies symbolizes all the evil within ourselves. There is also examples of the little ones being seduced by Jack for meat, they leave to castle rock for their new establishment and run raids on the remaining crew, they danced barbaric rituals all for their inner ego their primal needs. This also brings up the concept of Id’s egos and, superegos every single character relates to one of these characteristics in the story. Golding’s way of manipulating his audience into seeing his book from soo many perspectives was quite ingenious creating feigningly true cataclysmic events in two places at the same time the small having children, the much larger, having adults. All in all the book lord of the flies ending was quite horribly cut off by a british soldier glaring at his battleship. The book could have clearly been longer with many more parts to have had, and an explanation to what happened to them in the aftermath. All in all the book was an excellent read, just a horrible ending.

A Friend’s Plea

When you have a friend who you know is about to make the biggest mistake of their life you want to stop them right? This is how I feel towards my dear friend Macbeth. Macbeth is in a sticky situation with his wife breathing down his neck to kill his honourable king and with his own conflicting thoughts. To Macbeth you would be making a poor decision by killing Duncan because Duncan has done nothing to you to make him betray him in this sort of way. Macbeth, you should not allow other influences to make your decisions for you. And lastly what you do now will affect you the rest of your life.

Duncan has done nothing to you for him to betray his trust in such a way. Duncan has been nothing but a good friend and an honorable king to you and his people you do not have reason to kill him other then your selfishness and greediness. To kill Duncan in your house when he is staying with you as a guest is even more disrespectful after all that Duncan has done for you your going to kill him in your own house, how awful is that? Duncan has favored you and given you special titles and you’re just going to betray him to gain power that you don’t deserve.

Secondly, Macbeth, you should not allow your wife to influence your decisions. You are obvioulousy not firm enough to stand your ground to her. I know you love her but there’s a point when you know something is morally wrong and you need to take a stand especially when someone’s life is involved. By giving in to your wife it truly shows how weak you are Macbeth. Macbeth, you need to be the head of your household and show your wife

Type of business concerned why I consider it to have a good chance of success on the Web

I have been living in England for more than a year now, but originally I’m from Marseilles which is a city located in the South of France. There is a saying there if I translate it, that goes like this “You realise that you love something when you don’t have it anymore”. And I soon found out it was true. After trying British food, which I quite like, the moment came when I started having flashbacks of my home country.

South of France cuisine also called “provencale” cuisine is full of flavours and is naturally tasty thanks to its products bursting with sunshine. Vegetables, fishes, bouillabaisse (a soup made of fishes and saffron), herbs, spices that give an unmatched taste. And of course garlic and olive oil.

Dreams of tasty meals made of the products I could find almost everywhere back then, but that were impossible to find now I had moved away.

Custom Essays on Business Use of Internet and Intranet

I searched a lot of places for the usual croissants or pains au chocolat I used to have for breakfast, I tried to eat some so called French food, but none of the places I tried had it right.

Also I’m a student, which means I don’t have much time to prepare, buy, or eat food. Like a lot of people in this country, I stop and have a sandwich or salad for lunch or dinner. That’s why I also tried to find places on the Web that could deliver some French food, just in the same way I would do my online shopping at the supermarket or order a pizza by phone. I have to admit that the results amazed me. I now lived in London, capital of England, but all I could find was two online shops. The first one didn’t sell anything online, and the other one only did deliveries for work meetings. The only places that sold food from South of France were restaurants, but it was impossible to order anything from a computer.

Far from just being something that I love, food from the South of France reflects everything from its origins. South of France, especially the part called Provence is famous all around the world now. Thanks to writers, thanks to feedback from tourists, more and more people discover its wonderful weather, landscapes, and “chaleur de vivre” which explain why our food is so tasty and diversified, and a synonym of healthy eating.

Of course in England, everything French, whether its food or clothes is quite popular, but there is a growing trend in selling beauty products for example, that come from South of France and which all carry this healthy brand image (l’Occitane for example).

All of this research and analyse made me reach the following conclusions

I could sell online “take away” South of France inspired food, and at the same time sell some attached products used in its making( such as olive oil, garlic and olive based products, traditional biscuits and condiments).

Trendy, tasty, healthy, and no other web site can provide the same service in the UK

Type of site navigation scheme and technical features

I would like people to be able to use my web site easily, so the navigation scheme will be very simple.

There will be an index where all the different parts of the web site will appear. I at the moment think it will be present on every page, but the most important thing is that customers can get back to the main page without having to search for ages where they should be clicking.

The site will be divided in different parts

Below is how the pages in my site should be linked to each other

All parts of the site will be accessible from the main page, but some parts will be linked to each other.

· On the menu and traditional products page, each product listed will come with a picture and description.

From these pages, the customer will be able to access the “order” part.

· The traditional products page will be linked to he information on traditions and other facts page.

· The information on traditions and other facts page will be linked to the links section.

I will either do the linking by using pictures on which you can click and be directed to a new page, or by simple, clicking on apparent html writing.

· A Frequently asked questions section will be linked to the order section

· The information of the month section will be updated automatically when the information has no longer anything to do with the current month of the year or when special offers are no longer valid.

· The site will have an order form I have to build. It has to be simple and secure.

· For the moment I don’t know exactly which font I am going to use, but I would like it to be formal. As for the colours, I will choose some that are associated with the of South of France, for example lavender blue and light yellow.

· I would also like to add sound to my Web site. I have thought about the sound that the cicadas create, because it is something that you hear all day in the South of France and which is quite soothing. But I will not use the same sound on every page so as not to annoy the customers.

· I would also like to show small animations, for example when the order has been registered, I would like to have something like a motorbike going around the screen with at the same time a message confirming it is being processed.

Details of the main commercial features of the site/contribution they make to attracting business to the site

· Take away shop the products

The takeway part of the site will sell

Breakfast

Lunch

Gouter (Snack)

Diner

Breakfast/Gouter Lunch and dinner

Croissants Salade provencale Sandwich campagrain chevre/jambon

Pains au chocolat Salade de courgettes au parmesan Sandwich Pan Bagnat

Navettes sablees Bouillabaisse Thon aux herbes

This is what will be mainly sold in the take away section. Meals may vary depending on the seasons.

· The Traditional Products

Some of the products featured in this part of the site are part of the ingredients used for the take away menu.

Sachets d’herbes de Provence(bags of herbs)

Fromage de chevre(goats cheese), various sorts

Miel (Honey); lavender, thyme, rosemarry, mixed flowers

· Throughout the year, and depending on the seasons and new products available, I will launch some special offers in my “Information of the month section”. This section will at the same time provide important days in the “Provencal” calendar. More information will then be found in the Information on traditions and other facts if the customer wants to know more about it.

· For each product there will be a description, a picture, and a brief explanation of what it is made of.

· The information on traditions and other facts part will provide interesting information for customers, explaining where the food they eat comes from, how the products are created, how South of France looks like, what its culture is, its way of living and traditions.

I will give below some examples of how I plan to present this so you can have a better understanding of what I mean by this.

· Example of information on food

A Provencal saying says that fishes live in water and die in oil.

Tapenade puree made of crushed black olives (or green olives) mixed withcapers and anchovies. Can be eaten on a grilled slice of bred grated with garlic or serve as an accompaniment for fishes or meats.

Laïoli mayonnaise made with olive oil and slitely mixed with garlic. It goes very well with vegetables and fish.

Le pistou basil, olive oil, and garlic based paste. The word comes from Latin word Pestare which means crushed, because the basil leaves have to be crushed in a mortar in order to mix well in the preparation.

Ratatouille pepper, courgettes, aubergines, tomatoes and onions stew preparated with olive oil. Can be eaten cold or hot, as an accompaniment or as a main meal.

Bouillabaisse the particular taste of the Mediterranean fishes rascasse, rouget, lotte, congre, araigne, saint-pierre, explain why Marseille is such famous. Served with a traditional suace called rouille.(all you want to now about bouillabaisse)

Oil

Symbol of peace between God and the human beings, the olive tree is said to be the first tree to have emerged from the waters, telling Noe that human life could start again on planet Earth. Its fossilised leaves have been found inProvence, and it could have been there since 8000 years before our era. It is around 500 before J.-C. that the Phoceens graff different varieties coming from Asia on the initial wild olive tree, which permits them to implement them in their area. In 1840, France has 6 millions of olive trees. Then people start to try sunflower and corn.

In the last years, the French producers got involved in a production under the designation”controlled origin”. It guaranties the geographic origin as well as the quality linked to a real know-how.The manufacturing methods haven’t changed much in time. The unstoned olives are crushed until obtaining a smooth paste from which at the contact with water is extracted the virgin olive oil.

· For an example of seasonal modifications, I plan to talk about the “1 desserts” during the months of December and January. I will also introduce a new seasonal product called “galette des rois”. It is sort of cake in the shape of a crown that we eat after Christmas

· There is no dessert section yet in my products, but it is planned for later. The same goes for the drinks.

The customers will not only come on the site to purchase food. They will have a whole range of information to discover the origins of the products and they will be able to travel to South of France from their chair buy viewing the pictures in the gallery.

The customer feedback section will allow them to make any comments they wish to make, or they can also e-mail their enquiries. There will be a phone number and e-mail address if they have any problems that the FAQ section cannot answer. At the same time this will help me make some changes in terms of menu or ordering and delivery system.

If they wish to have information on how to go to South of France or like to know more, they will find useful web sites addresses on the links page.

Press release

As we tend to have less and less time to eat properly but at the same time want to eat healthily, we tend to be monotonous in our habits. But now with our new range of South of France online take away and traditional food shop, sunshine is brought to our plates.

The rich tastes of the sun bursting cuisine enlightens the grey days and promises to fulfil both the body and mind through its extensive range of products.

From breakfast to diner, vegetarian or non vegetarian eaters who have a demanding life can find a good and convenient way to cater for their needs. Deliveries can be made anywhere in England.

Also, this site will satisfy the curiosity as well as the palate as it provides extensive information on Provence, country of the thousand colours and traditions.

Niccolo Machiavelli was a political philosopher of the Renaissance. He lived from 146-157. Niccolo Machiavelli was also a very famous painter in his time. He painted many famous paintings that are seen in museums, books, and many other places. He was also involved in government throughout his life. Niccolo Machiavelli was a painter, political philosopher, Italian historian, an statesman for influenced many political leaders in Europe.

Niccolo Machiavelli led a very political life. In 144, Niccolo Machiavelli became an important diplomat. He spent most of his time over the years writing history, political philosophy, and plays. The Renaissance was a time of political conflict. Niccolo took part in diplomatic missions through France, Germany, and Italy. In later years, he was forced to retirement of the political business. Machiavelli was known as the “father of modern political theory”.

Niccolo Machiavelli had many political writings. Many of Machiavelli’s writings reflected political issues. He wrote about the world around him and his life in the Renaissance. He witnessed many changes in the environment and wrote about them.

Niccolo Machiavelli wrote one political treatise titled The Prince. The Prince was written during a time of tragedy in the Renaissance. Many things Machiavelli wrote about had to deal with politics and violence. The Prince was written in 151. Although it was written then, it was published however until 15 and Machiavelli’s death. The theme of this book is about preservation of authority and the establishment of it.

Because of The Prince, Machiavelli is considered one of the greatest early modern analyzers of the political power.

In 148, Machiavelli served as a civil servant in Florence. Later in 151, Machiavelli was imprisoned and the republic failed.

Machiavelli had many jobs over his lifetime. He was the head of the second chancery in 148. Niccolo was also the secretary of council and he studied political tactics. He also studied the strength of a nation with only one prince. In 150, Machiavelli led a small army to free Pisa. Later in his life, for 5 years he worked as a historiographer.

Niccolo Machiavelli had hard times in his life. He lost his place in politics and very much wanted it back. When he wrote The Prince, he wrote it to try and regain favoritism by Medici. In the end, Medici didn’t agree with what Machiavelli said in The Prince and ended up rejecting Machiavelli’s proposal to have that job back.

Machiavelli also wrote a book titled “Discourses On Livy”. The book was on Machiavelli’s full political philosophy. Niccolo also wrote a biography on the Life of Castruccio Castracani. He wrote many plays and also many poems. His most famous poem was The Mandrake. The Mandrake was written in 154. Machiavelli also wrote the History of Florence in 155. The History of Florence tells about chronicles of the city. Machiavelli also wrote the Art of the War in 151. That book describes mercenary troops and their lives.

Niccolo Machiavelli was a very productive leader. Over all of his tragedies that happened in his life, he still overcame all of it. He worked very hard producing plays that have become very famous over the years. He wrote The Prince, which is a very well populated piece today. There are always people who, in a group, come out with better qualities as a

leader than others. The strongest people however, become the greater influences, which

the others decide to follow. However, sometimes the strongest person is not the best

choice. Authors often show how humans select this stronger person, in order to give an

understanding of the different powers that some people can posses over others. In

William Goldings novel, Lord of the Flies Ralph though not the stronger person,

demonstrates a better understanding of people which gives Ralph better leadership

qualities than Jack.

Ralph displays useful human qualities as a leader by working towards the

betterment of the boys society. He knows that in order to stay civilized the boys need

stability and order. He creates rules and a simple form of government to achieve this

order. Ralph understands that the boys, particularly Piggy, have to be given respect and

must be treated as equals. This makes Ralph a better leader, as he is able to acknowledge

that he was not superior to any of the other boys. Ralphs wisdom and ability to look to

the future also make him a superior leader. Ralph has the sense to keep his focus on

getting off the island. He insists on keeping the fire burning as a distress signal. Ralphs

leadership provides peace and order to the island while Jacks leadership creates chaos.

Under Jacks rule, the boys become uncivilized savages. They have no discipline.

Ralph, however, keeps the boys under order through the meetings, which he himself

calls. At these meetings a sense of order is instilled because the boys have to wait until

they hold the conch to speak. When Ralph says, Ill give the conch to the next person to

speak. He can hold it when hes speaking. (Golding 6) by making such rules as these,

and by giving the boys the stability of an authority figure, mainly himself, he enforces his

role of leader. He wins the boys respect and confidence in his leadership abilities. Ralph

uses his authority to try to improve the boys society. By building shelters he

demonstrates his knowledge of the boys needs. When he says to Jack, They talk and

scream. The littluns. Even some of the others. (Golding 56) he is referring to why the

boys need shelters; they are afraid. Jack fails to realize the boys need security, stability

and order in their society. Ralph understands that by building the shelters, the boys will

feel more secure. This illustrates his superior knowledge of people, which makes him a

better leader than Jack.

Ralphs treatment of the boys demonstrates his understanding of how people

should be treated. While Jack considers the boys inferior to himself, Ralph treats the boys

as equals. Ralphs superior leadership qualities are reflected in his constant defense of

Piggy. Piggy is the weakest of the group and is therefore treated unfairly much of the

time. When Jack hits Piggy and breaks his glasses, Ralph calls it A dirty trick. (Golding

78) Ralphs compassion and ability to empathize with others thus illustrating his

understanding of people; while at the same time demonstrates Jacks disregard for other

humans. Ralphs government is a form of democracy which gives each boy equal rights

and an ability to express themselves. Jack treats the boys, especially Piggy, as inferiors.

When Jack gets meat from hunting, he gives everyone some except for Piggy. When

Piggy asks for some, Jack says, You didnt hunt. (Golding 80) Ralph and many of the

littluns did not hunt, yet only this treatment is directed at Piggy. Jacks contempt for

Piggy shows his inability to understand people, while a good leader would take care of all

of his followers. Ralph possesses this understanding and is therefore a better leader.

Ralphs common sense and ability to recognize what is best for the group as a

whole further demonstrates his superior leadership skills. His main focus throughout the

book is getting rescued and he puts much emphasis on this. He instructs the boys to make

a fire and to keep it burning as a distress signal. When the boys do not share his

enthusiasm for getting rescued, he becomes exasperated. The fire is the most important

thing on the island. How can we ever be rescued except by luck, if we dont keep the fire

going? (Golding 88) Ralphs determination to get rescued is not for purely selfish

reasons, but rather, it is in the best interest of the group. When the boys join Jacks tribe;

Jack only satisfies their short term wants and needs, such as the desire for meat. A good

leader however, should look to the future and plan accordingly such as Ralph does.

Although these choices may not always be popular, the better leader will carry out long

term plans. When Piggy says Which is better - to be a pack of painted niggers like you

are, or to be sensible like Ralph is? (Golding 1) he demonstrates how the boys; by not

following Ralph, have been lead astray by Jack. Ralphs main priority, is getting off the

island, a much wiser choice for the boys to follow. Unfortunately, the boys decide to

follow Jack, whose main priority is to hunt and play games rather than try to be saved.

Had they listened to the better leader, the novel may not have ended as tragically.

Ralphs clear understanding of people and their needs make him a far superior

leader when compared with Jack. Ralphs understanding of the boys need for stability and

order through government and rules prompts him to improve the society in which they

are living. Jacks society was barbaric and savage and met none of these needs. Jack treats

the boys as slaves and inferiors. Ralphs patience and caring with the boys shows his

ability to take charge and rule in an effective, yet democratic fashion. Ralphs priority to

get off the island demonstrates his wisdom and ability to make decisions. Although a

good leader may not be as charismatic as a poor one, it is important to choose the leader

who will meet the needs of the people. The popularity of an inferior leader soon

disappears, yet the wisdom and guidance of a good leader will always remain.

William Lloyd Garrison was the son of a seaman; he was born in Newburyport Massachusetts, in December 1805. Apprenticed as a printer, he became editor of the Newburyport Herald in 184. Four years later he was appointed editor of the National Philanthropist in Boston. In 188 Garrison met Benjamin Lundy, the Quaker anti-slavery editor of the Genius of Universal Emancipation. The following year he became co-editor of Lundys newspaper. One article, where Garrisons criticised a merchant involved in the slave trade, resulted in him being imprisoned for libel.

Released in June 180, Garrisons period in prison made him even more determined to bring and end to slavery. Whereas he previously shared Lundys belief in gradual emancipation, Garrison now supported immediate and complete emancipation of all slaves. After breaking with Lundy, Garrison returned to Boston where he established his own anti-slavery newspaper, the Liberator.

In the Liberator Garrison not only attacked slaveholders but the timidity, injustice and absurdity of the gradualists. The newspaper only had a circulation of ,000 but the strong opinions expressed in its columns gained Garrison a national reputation as the leader of those favouring immediate emancipation.

Custom Essays on William Lloyd Garrison

Garrisons views were particularly unpopular in the South and the state of Georgia offered $5,000 for his arrest and conviction. Garrison was highly critical of the Church for its refusal to condemn slavery. Some anti-slavery campaigners began arguing that Garrisons bitter attacks on the clergy was frightening off potential supporters.

In 18 Garrison formed the New England Anti-Slavery Society. The following year he helped organize the Anti-Slavery Society. Garrison was influenced by the ideas of Susan Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone and other feminists who joined the society. This was reflected in the content of the Liberator that now began to advocate womens suffrage, pacifism and temperance.

Some members of the Anti-Slavery Society considered the organization to be too radical. They objected to the attacks on the US Constitution and the prominent role played by women in the society. In 18, two brothers, Arthur Tappan and Lewis Tappan, left and formed a rival organization, the American and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society.

Garrison became increasingly radical and in 1854 he created controversy by publicly burning a copy of the Constitution at a Anti-Slavery rally at Framingham, Massachusetts. Although he doubted the morality of the violence used by John Brown at Harpers Ferry in 185, his newspaper controversially supported his actions.

On the outbreak of the American Civil War Garrison abandoned his previously held pacifist views and supported Abraham Lincoln and the Union Army. However, during the war, Garrison was critical of Lincoln for making the preservation of the union rather than the abolition of slavery his main objective.

After the passing of the 1th Amendment in 1865, Garrison decided to cease publication of the Liberator. Garrison spent his last fourteen years campaigning for womens suffrage, pacifism and temperance. William Lloyd Garrison died on 4th May, 187.

The ground shakes like distant thunder on the eve of a great storm as heavy machines carve the earth to do their unnatural bidding. It is called Progress. Destruction of something old, to be replaced by something new, whatever society deems invaluable…is destroyed. In Robert Lowell’s “For the Union Dead”, a gaudy new construction leaves behind the memories of an old aquarium and Colonel Shaw’s Civil war relief to be forgotten. Should progress be allowed to destroy tradition? No, we should learn from our past, not ignore it. The forward progress of society remains more important to society then their past that lives on in tradition.

Tradition is something that has been passed down from years gone to the next generation. It lives in buildings, stories, actions, pretty much everything we do. The old South Boston aquarium was a pinnacle of tradition to Robert Lowell. As a child he flourished there, allowing his imagination to roam free amongst the contained ocean. Years would pass, and time changes all. Now, several years later, the aquarium where Lowell fed his mind was now destroyed, being razed for a new underground parking lot.

“Behind their cage/

Order Custom a circle of progress, For the union dead paper

Yellow dinosaur steam shovels were grunting/

As they cropped up tons of mush and grass/

To gouge their underworld garage.”

-Robert Lowell

With such expressive words as cage, cropped, and gouge, it is clear that Lowell had a strong resentment for the disregard of such a traditional place. As is true with Colonel Shaw’s Civil War relief, depicting the march of the Colonel and his 54th Black Regiment to their last battle at Fort Wagner. It is despicable that such a monument to our past could be so ignored. “On St. Gauden’s Civil war relief,/ propped by a plank splint against the garage’s earthquake.” Lowell. Such a monumental depiction of brave men heading to their untimely death, fighting for a cause that defines America to this day, something that defines this countries tradition, held up by a x4 of progress. Progress would not remember the Soldiers that died, progress would not remember the sacrifices they made. Lowell shows his bitterness through Colonel Shaw, saying that

“He has an angry wren like vigilance,/

a greyhounds gentle tautness/

He seems to wince at pleasure/

and suffocate for privacy.”

-Robert Lowell

It is as if Colonel Shaw is looking out over all that was laid out amongst his Relief, and was disgusted. Just like Lowell was. The memory of Colonel Shaw and his men was forgotten, surrounded by the horrors of progress.

Progress brings about change. If you change something, you must destroy something that once was, to make it something that is now new. You must sacrifice the memory of old and give way to the fast paced life of the future. Its something that cant be changed, however unfortunate. To destroy a Boston landmark to make way for the future in underground parking, so that society can have a place to park their new automobiles. To disregard the heritage of a nation with a “plank splint”. All the society cares about is its own progress into the future, not the mistakes that it should learn from in its past. Lowell hates it, the instruments of progress are described as “Yellow Dinosaurs” that rip open the earth, shaking all that the society should value. And for what? A couple hundred parking spots in the Boston Commons? Society should think more about what it was founded on, the men that died, and the places where society was raised. Progress is the future, but it should not be the destruction of the past. Society must embrace its past and live with its knowledge always fresh in our heads. To forget our past will lead to the demise of this country. To forget our foundations, our scarifies, our Traditions, is to forget what society is. Lowell believed this, by showing us the Mosler safe. Here was an add for a safe that had withstood the blast from the Hiroshima bomb in the Second World War and to Lowell’s surprise, it was the only reminder of The Second World War in Boston.

The earth will stop shaking soon, as the storms of progress pass for a short time. It is but a moment, as progress cannot be stopped. The Aquarium of South Boston is now long gone, and with it the food for the imagination of today’s youth. But it happens everywhere, a tradition from the past is forgotten, and new ones are implemented. It will go one like this till the end of days, when a forward progression is not possible. Society will not look back on its past, will not remember its forgotten ways. But it will be a circle of unending rebuilding, and everything that was once progress, will soon be destroyed to make way for the new and improved. When will it end? Will it ever end? Maybe. But for now, we all move forward, “A savage servility (that) slides by on grease.”

THE HITLER SIGN OFF

When I was in the sixth grade I had an extremely mean teacher who was named Miss Miller who had been giving me trouble everyday in class. It was the end of the year and I was sitting on my old brown couch that had yellow flowers on it with my older cousin Chad. We were watching a history show on World War and there was a man named Adolph Hitler who was very disturbed at the time but I did not no this, and as he was giving a speech in some language I did not recognize and at the end of his speech he made this jester with his arm where he brought it across his chest bent at the elbow and then raised it in the air so and the crowd he was talking to went crazy so I asked my cousin Chad what that meant and he said that it was a way of saying I hate you.

The next day comes around I have to go to school and deal with my mean ass teacher. So I walk in the classroom already in a bad mood from getting picked on by my older brother and she starts yelling at me because there is gum on the bottom of my desk and it wasnt my gum so I yell back at her back because she has been bothering me all year and I couldnt take it anymore, about 10 seconds into me yelling at her she gives me detention and I really hated her at the time and I remember my cousin saying that the jester that Hitler did was a way of saying I hate you so I did it to her and when I did her mouth dropped and she screamed go to the principal you are in big trouble. So I went to the principals office and five minutes after I got there my dad arrives furious and the principal pulls us both in her office and tells me that I am suspended for now and that the school board will take a look at the report she was writing up for them to decide whether or not I was expelled.

Once again, he hits the top of the pop charts and stays there for ten weeks. Scotty, Bill, and DJ are with him as he plays Hound Dog on The Milton Berle Show. This song is given in a very sensuous style causing great controversy among the press and some adult viewers. This just adds to his unstoppable popularity. This is the beginning of those morally concerned parents and parts of the religious community that cant stand the shaking hips or black sound from a white man.

With his albums selling millions and movies doing well, Elvis started to be known as the King. Ed Sullivan saw the popularity as well as the controversy surrounding the Berle appearance that he offered Elvis a contract. A price is set at fifty thousand dollars for three appearances. With the rise of the King, Tupelo proclaimed there would an Elvis Presley Day. He returned to perform two shows on the very stage he started his career. The town and family also opened his birth house to the public for tours. With the fame, also came its perks. There were all kinds of souvenir merchandise; lipstick, shirts, shoes, stuffed hound dogs, and of course T-shirts. The front page of the Wall Street Journal reported that over the course of a few months Elvis merchandise had over million dollars in sales. With the fame also came the money, which is why in 157 Elvis bought Graceland Mansion for himself and his family. The fame didn’t stay in the United States, though. In 157, he did four shows in Canada, and they were bootlegging his records in Stalingrad. But, all this fun was coming to an end, at the end of 57 Elvis received his draft notice. He was a true patriot; a famous musician serving his country. He wouldn’t hit the music scene again until 166. He came back to be in his twenty-second movie and formally propose to Priscilla. On May 1, 167 Elvis and Priscilla are married at the Aladdin Hotel in Las Vegas in front of friends and family. Exactly nine months after their marriage, Elvis and Priscilla give birth to Lisa Marie. The 68 Special was filmed a few months later to talk about how Elvis has changed music forever.

All of the fame and money doesn’t always mean happiness, in May of 17 Priscilla and Elvis split. He started seriously dating Linda Thompson until late 176 when they split and he dated Ginger Alden until his death. Throughout his career, Elvis made thirty-three movies, and dozens of albums that were nearly always successful. It is no doubt that he had a huge affect on Western culture. He sang, danced, shook those famous hips, and reduced the female fans to fainting. By the end of his career, Elvis had the backing of nearly the whole world and millions of fans.

Elvis death is a mystery to nearly everyone. Most people are sure hes dead, but I can honestly say I think that nearly everyone has that doubt that he could still be alive. The mystery to his death gives way to all kinds of concoctions. The ones I found the most believable are as follows the gravesite, the means, and Chiros Book of Numbers. The gravesite sports the wrong spelling of Elvis middle name, which his father would have never let happen. Aron, Elvis middle name, was misspelled on his birth certificate as well and his father went to great lengths to get it corrected. It had something to do with his stillborn brothers middle name, Garon. Elvis current gravesite is between his father and grandma, not next to his mother, which he requested. So, it is theorized he wouldn’t tempt fate by putting his real name on the stone or violate the ground next to his mother until he was ready to be there. The means came from Elvis pharmaceutical knowledge as well as his founder Colonel Parkers knowledge of creating new identities. Elvis knew enough about drugs that he could self-administer drugs that could create a deathlike state. Colonel Parker had to create a new identity for himself, he was an illegal alien from Holland. He made a completely new identity for himself, and could have done the same for Elvis. Chiros Book of Numbers is by far the most interesting. Elvis had a fascination with numerology - an interest he fed by reading Chiros Book of Numbers. The theory that the King orchestrated his death is further supported when considering the significance of the date of his alleged death. The date in question is August 16,177. By adding the numbers in the date, 8, 16, and 177, you get 001. This is the title of Elvis favorite movie in which the hero plans his immortality in the bathroom. Elvis spent a considerable amount of time doing the same planning his afterlife on the john. Elvis spent so much time in the bathroom that he had his toilet converted into a reclining comfy chair. Coincidentally, the bathroom is also where Elviss body was reportedly found.

Given Elviss religious affiliation (Christianity), he had a fascination with things that come in threes such as the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. The sum of the digits from his favorite film (+0+0+1) is three. Lets consider the triad of the repetition of the number 4. 001 (favorite film) less 177 (year of death) is 4. The two numbers from the day of death (8/16) when added up equal 4. The sum of the digits in the year of death (1++7+7) also equals 4. That is occurrences of the number 4 which is divisible by , and when divided by three the result, 8 has a perfect cubed root (xx=8).

Elvis loved numerology, and when you consider the numeric significance of the date of his alleged death, it is clear that if indeed he did plan to fake his death, he could not have chosen a better date.

The death of Elvis came as a great shock to nearly everyone, but I feel Elvis is dead, and it was better that he went out with a bang instead of a fizzle. That is how I feel he would have wanted it and that is the best way for it to happen. The only odd thing about his whole death is the fact that no one has collected on his life insurance policy.

Even though the title is To Kill a Mocking Bird, this book has little to do with birds; it’s all about symbolism. Reading in between the lines is crucial for understanding the true meaning of this award-winning novel. Some examples of symbolism in To Kill a Mocking Bird are Tim Johnson, the title, and lastly the flower. Sometimes it’s hard to pick out the symbolism in each of these things right away, but once you figure it out, everything makes much more sense!

A great place to start is with the shooting of Tim Johnson, which is very similar to that of Tom Robinson. First of all, the characters names are very close, and could easily be confused. Tim Johnson is a dog that is loved very much by his owner, as well as the rest of the neighborhood. Not much different from Tim, Tom Robinson has always been helpful to all the neighbors and is very good to Mayella Ewell. Neither of them have ever caused any harm. Contrary to their good behavior, both are put to death because of their appearance, even though all other evidence points in their favor. Tim Johnson appears to be a mad dog, but at the same time you don’t usually find mad dogs in February. Tom Robinson is found guilty of rape because he is black, all though the town knows that Bob Ewell is a drunk, he is white and that’s all that matters. The death of Tim Johnson foreshadows the death of Tom Robinson.

The connection between the book’s title and Boo Radley isn’t a coincidence either! They explain in the book that killing a mocking bird is considered a sin because they are innocent and do nothing but bring joy through their beautiful music. Just like a mocking bird, Boo Radley is innocent. He isn’t crazy like everyone thinks. He brings joy to the children by leaving them presents in the tree, and he gave Scout a blanket when she was cold. Instead of literally killing Boo, the community kills him with their gossip, words, and accusations.

Lastly, the trickiest symbolic tie is that between Ms. Dubose’s death and her flower. Ms. Dubose died pure, not addicted to the morphine; the flower is white, a symbol of purity. Jem attacked Ms. Dubose’s flower garden, just like Ms. Dubose’s morphine addiction attacked her. Finally, Ms. Dubose always thought that her flower garden looked like “snow on the mountains”. If you think about it, the snow on mountaintops isn’t far from heaven. So the flower symbolizes Ms. Dubose’s little piece of heaven.

Write your Symbolism in "To Kill a Mocking Bird"By: Harper Lee research paper

To wrap it all up, To Kill a Mocking Bird holds many of its morals beneath the basic text. Symbolically tying almost each and every event together, such as Tim Johnson, the title, and lastly the flower; making it the award winning novel it has become. So whether you’re looking for a coming of age novel, historical fiction, or a gold mine of symbolism…this book is as far as you’ll need to go.

I plan on doing a video along with a collage of war pictures. For the video, I plan on making a series of games which involve war issues. An example of this game is Battfield 14 which is taken place during World War . I will also take clips from issues which occurred recently in the war in Iraq. The way I will piece these clips together is by using VideoWave and Adobe Premiere 5.0. This video will be no longer than 000100. I will be showing clips of the up’s and down’s of war and what people achieve from committing themselves into war. I will need to purchase a computer card to allow firewire connection between the digital camera and the computer for my clips to be transferred.

I will also do a creative poster which is also based on war. I will be editing pictures using Adobe Photoshop 7.0. Effects will be given to these pictures using filters and plug-ins. The pictures will be acquired from screen shots during game play and from the internet. I will use fabric paint to outline the important parts of the poster such as the title, and the tank in the background which will have photo’s on top of it. The background based in a war field with men running and bodies falling. Also, macbeth finds himself in a situation where he is unuseful to anyone else and I feel he should die because of that. And if macbeth is not a nice person, he shouldnt die becuase he helps everyone in the movie and he is also a hero. A whore would be a beter character than him

Coming to Terms with Schizophrenia

“Can I ever forget that I am schizophrenic? I am isolated and I am alone. I am never real. I play-act my life, touching and feeling only shadows. My heart and soul are touched, but the feelings remain locked away, festering inside me because they cannot find expression…” Anonymous schizophrenic, New York Times, March 18, 186. These words were written by a victim of schizophrenia, one of the most devastating and misunderstood mental illnesses currently known to mankind. This disease comes in different degrees and has symptoms which vary from person to person, sometimes making it difficult to detect, and much harder to understand. It is obviously difficult for the victim to live with schizophrenia. The disease also devastates the victim’s family. Although it is difficult to live with a schizophrenic family member, there are ways to cope with the ordeal. The first step toward gradual family recovery is recognizing that the victim is struggling with schizophrenia. Second, the family members must pinpoint the negative effects the disease is having on their emotions. Finally, the family must help the victim and each other begin the walk down the road to recovery with supportive therapy.

Family members must accept that schizophrenia is a disease that distorts its victims’ perceptions of their environments, severely cripples their minds, and usually eventually causes them to become very detached from the world around them. The word schizophrenia literally means “splitting of the mind.” This does not at all refer to a split personality disorder, which has nothing to do with schizophrenia. The disease is not uncommon. It affects one in one hundred people worldwide. It usually strikes young men between the ages of sixteen and twenty, and young women between the ages of twenty and thirty. (British Columbia Schizophrenia Society, ) Although a cure has not yet been found, it has been proven that supportive therapy and treatment with prescription drugs are beneficial (B.C.S.S., ). If a family member suspects another family member has this illness, they must be sure of this by checking for its symptoms. The symptoms of schizophrenia are both striking and subtle. Some of the more glaring symptoms are delusions, hallucinations, and chaotic speech. Delusions are false beliefs that defy logic and common sense (Young, Patrick. Schizophrenia, 5). Examples of delusions may include the victim “knowing” he is being watched, sincerely believing himself to possess mystical powers, or being convinced that people are trying to kill him. Delusions may even lead schizophrenics to believe that their family members are against them. Louise Wilson’s son got caught up in this delusion. Wilson wrote

“He refused to touch any food that I had prepared or handled, not even a bakery

cake, if my hand had untied the string. Not until years later did we hear he

thought his food was being poisoned.” (Young, 6)

Another of the obvious symptoms of schizophrenia is hallucinations. Hallucinations are when the victim senses something that is not there. This can range from hearing voices in the mind, seeing imaginary people, or feeling insects crawling on the skin. It is most common for schizophrenics to hear voices. The voices usually “vilify and curse the schizophrenic, telling him how wretched, evil, and terrible he is.” (Young, 7) Sometimes, the voices may order the victim to hurt themselves, do something strange, or even kill someone. In these cases, “there is always a danger that such commands will be obeyed.” (B.C.S.S., 5) The other major symptom of the illness is disjointed conversation. The victim may make vague statements that have no connection to each other, or they may be very hard to comprehend. (Lundy, Alan. Diagnosing and Treating Mental Illness, 4). The victim’s thoughts do not flow together; they are jumbled and confusing, and the fragmentation of their mind becomes evident in their speech. Some of the symptoms of schizophrenia are more difficult to detect. These include withdrawal from social activities, sudden fanatic beliefs such as becoming extremely religious, irrational angry or fearful responses to loved ones, displaying little or no emotion, and sleeplessness and agitation. (B.C.S.S., 1) The victim’s families may not initially take these into account as symptoms of schizophrenia because they may seem to be responses to stress, a bad day, or a response to something like a death in the family. However, as the symptoms persist, they eventually become more noticeable, more disturbing, and stranger. The best thing to do when suspecting a family member is schizophrenic is to get it diagnosed. Diagnosis and admitting that a loved one is mentally ill are the only ways a family can begin to recover.

Having a schizophrenic in the family is very difficult. The family members undergo a whirlwind of depressing and negative emotions. Giving in to these emotions may worsen the situation. Therefore, family members must evaluate how they are feeling, and what effects it is having on the rest of the family and the schizophrenic member. Although it is difficult, the best thing they can do is realize that changing their outlook will benefit the other family members. It is very hard for parents to watch their child fall victim to the disease’s troubling and confusing symptoms. One parent of a teenager with schizophrenia wrote,

“The typical family of a mentally ill person is often in chaos. Parents look frantically for answers that can’t be found. Hope turns to despair, and some families are destroyed no matter how hard they try to survive.” (B.C.S.S., 6)

Parents may experience some emotions such as sorrow, fear, and guilt. (B.C.S.S., ) They must recognize that they possess these notions, and realize that they can overcome them. Sorrow can cause the parents to feel as if they have lost their child. Although the child has severely changed, he or she is only lost if the disease goes untreated. They are struggling with an illness, and showing them support and getting them treatment is the only way parents can really keep their child. Parents may fear that their child will hurt himself or others. While it is difficult for them to picture their child doing that, it is good that they are recognizing this possibility and should therefore seek help. Parents may also feel guilty; thinking that they are to blame for their child’s illness. This is not the case. Schizophrenia is not caused by outside factors. It is no one’s fault. (Lundy, 67). Siblings also experience difficult emotions when one of their brothers or sisters is a victim of schizophrenia. Sometimes, they may develop attitudes of bitterness, dislike toward the affected sibling, or blame each other. (B.C.S.S., ) They may feel bitter and ask why their sister has to be a schizophrenic. Truthfully, there is no explanation. No one gets a mental illness for any reason, which is why they are so hard to deal with within the family. Although it is hard, they must accept that their sibling is ill, and that the best they can do is support her through her treatment to try to get her well. They may also begin to secretly dislike the affected sibling, thinking that they really do love her, but wish that she would not act so strangely. It is difficult for someone to watch a sibling they have grown up with become paranoid or delusional. However, they do not mean to be embarrassing; they are ill. It is still hard for the siblings to accept the fact that they cannot do anything about it, except support the ill one. In addition, siblings may sometimes blame each other or their parents for the cause of the family member’s schizophrenia. They may think that if their older brother had not gotten expelled, there would not have been enough tension in the family to cause their younger sister to become schizophrenic. Siblings may also believe that if their father did not always go out of town on business trips so much, their younger sister never would have become ill. Again, no one causes schizophrenia; it is a mental disorder that appears to be caused by imbalances within the mind. Blaming other family members will not solve the problem or pinpoint its cause. It will only make the situation more difficult (Lundy, 67). After family members determine the effects their emotions are having on the rest of the family, they can take steps to change them, such as discussing their feelings with each other or a therapist. This can help them come to terms with the illness and seek recovery together as a family.

Finally, the family must work with each other and the mentally ill member to seek recovery. Both the victim and the family can be helped with supportive therapy. This type of therapy aims to give the patient support and “emphasize structure in his or her life.” (Young, 76) Patients will try to learn to distinguish dreams from reality, relearn social skills, learn to deal with their surroundings, and try to get their lives back on track. Although it may take a long time for the patient to establish trust with the therapist, because schizophrenia makes the victim distrustful, they may eventually begin to discuss their delusions with their therapist. This allows the patient to distinguish fact from fantasy and learn how to overcome their irrational beliefs. Supportive therapy is also extended to the rest of the family and its recovery. Supportive family therapy treats the victim and the family together. It allows the family to view their separate personalities and their “family personality.” By evaluating how they interact and looking at the range of their emotions as a whole, the recovering family may begin to see ways in which they should improve themselves to gain stability back in their lives. Therefore, “family therapy can prove exceptionally valuable in getting to the root of a problem.” (Lundy, 68) Although the recovering schizophrenic also needs antipsychotic drugs to control the disease, supportive therapy is the best way for both the victim and the family to mutually recover together. Medical treatment helps the patient to recover on his or her own, and supportive therapy enables them to be aided by the support of the family as they all recover as a whole through therapy. (B.C.S.S., 1-14) Seeking treatment together is very beneficial, as it allows family members to deal with their emotions and recover along with their ill family member, even though they are all receiving treatment at different degrees.

In conclusion, schizophrenia is a complicated and disabling illness which requires time and effort to heal. The illness has the definite potential to destroy the victim, and it also harms the victim’s family in a different yet equally painful way. It is not easy for a family to cope with one of their member’s struggle with schizophrenia, but there are ways to make it easier. First of all, they must recognize the symptoms of the illness that their member is suffering from. Second, the family must learn to deal with the emotions that the schizophrenia is causing them to have. Finally, the family must get the victim treatment and supportive therapy while they undergo therapy at the same time. These all allow for a fuller healing process and can hopefully help the entire family, both the sick and the healthy, put the pieces of their lives back together.
