It is impossible not to feel a wide range of emotions while reading or watching this play. Sorrow over the many deaths that could have been so easily prevented, fury against the stupidity of the Montegues and Capulets for continuing their feud, and envy for the seemingly perfect love that the two lovers seemed to share are a few of the more common emotions. Every time I have come across this play, however, my main emotion has been deep disbelief regarding their supposed love. I very much doubt that whatever sentiments Romeo and Juliet could possibly feel for each other goes any deeper than pure physical attraction. Their actions, especially Romeo’s, only reinforce my opinion. As Friar Lawrence aptly states “Young men’s love then lies/Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes” (..67-68). At the start of the play, Romeo is desperately in love with Rosaline, but poor Rosaline is forgotten the instant that Romeo sees Juliet. Without ever having spoken a single word with her, he is already willing to defy his family and do anything for her. The same applies to Juliet, who is equally willing to elope with a man with whom she has had two short conversations with prior to their marriage, which took place the day after they met each other. They took no time to get to know each other and form any sort of relationship. Considering their ages, I doubt that their attraction was anything more than a quick infatuation and perhaps a desire to rebel against the roles that their families expected them to play. It would be interesting to see what their lives would have been like had this play been a comedy rather than a tragedy.
