Introduction

Total Quality Management (TQM) is now a part of all sectors and its language has become part of our everyday business speech. It is an approach for continuously improving the quality of goods and services, delivered through the participation of all levels and functions of the organization, so as to achieve customers’ satisfaction, long-term profitability of the organization and benefit of its members It is a way of thinking about goals, organizations, processes and people to ensure that the right things are done right the first time. This thought process can change attitudes, behavior and hence results for the better.

Customers and producers view quality in different ways. The customers view quality from the design and consider both the product’s feature and performance measures to assess its value. The producers view quality from the product’s conformance to requirements and the costs of quality as increasing quality conformance will reduce product costs and raise profits.

Dr. W. Edward Deming is considered the pioneer of the TQM movement. He started his quality endeavor in Japan in the 140’s and is well known for helping Japanese companies apply Shewhart’s statistical process control. Deming believed that with improved quality, it will lead to the decrease in costs which will result in improved productivity. Improved productivity would mean that the organization has products with higher quality at less cost and thus, the organization will have a greater market share. The organization will therefore stay in business and provide jobs and more jobs.

Other renowned gurus of TQM include Joseph Juran who was also well-known for helping improve Japanese quality. He developed the Juran Trilogy for managing quality quality planning, quality control, and quality improvement. Another well known quality innovator is Philip Crosby who developed the four absolutes of quality as follows

• Quality is defined by conformance to requirements

• The system for causing quality is prevention and not appraisal

• The performance standard is zero defects and not close enough

• Quality is measured by the cost of nonconformance

What is Total Quality Management?

Total Quality Management (TQM) is an approach to management that seeks continual improvement in everything we do. It is concerned with the performance of all the processes in the organization and the products and services that are the outcomes of those processes. TQM stresses the creative involvement of everyone from the Chief Executive Officer down, in the quest for quality. It emphasizes team activity, brings pride in performance to all levels of the organization, develops more informed and supportive managers and supervisors, and so leads to an improved climate in the workplace. It offers lower costs and improved productivity, leading to greater effectiveness, long-term competitive advantage, and improved job prospects.

When all of its elements are implemented properly, TQM is like a well-build house. It’s solid, strong and cohesive. If TQM is not planned for and implemented correctly, it will be structurally weak and will probably fail.

Thus, TQM can be defined as a management philosophy which seeks to integrate all organizational functions to focus on meeting customer needs and organizational objectives.

Why is TQM important to an organization?

TQM is about building quality in from the beginning and making quality everyone’s concern and responsibility. Consumers are willing to pay more for goods and services of higher quality. Adopting TQM can let an organization gain competitive advantage and establish a new culture which will enable growth and longevity. It will also provide a working environment in which everyone can succeed, has reduced stress, waste and friction. In addition, TQM build teams, partnerships and co-operations

When does an organization adopt TQM?

According to IQA, TQM can be adopted at any time after executive management has seen the error of its ways, opened its mind and embraced the TQM philosophy. It cannot be attempted if management perceives it as a quick fix, or a tool to improve worker performance.

Elements of Total Quality Management

For TQM to be the driving force behind leadership, design, planning and improvement initiatives, it’ll require the help of eight key elements. According to Padhi, these eight key elements can be divided into four groups according to their function.

Group I Foundation

TQM is built on a foundation of ethics, integrity and trust. It fosters openness, fairness and sincerity and allows involvement by everyone. This is the key to unlocking the ultimate potential of TQM. These three elements move together, however, each element offers something different to the TQM concept.

Ethics is the discipline concerned with good and bad in any situation. It is a two-sided subject represented by organizational and individual ethics. Organizational ethics establish a business code of ethics that outlines guidelines that all employees are to adhere to in the performance of their work. Individual ethics include personal rights or wrongs.

Integrity implies honesty, morals, values, fairness, and adherence to the facts and sincerity. The characteristic is what customers (internal or external) expect and deserve to receive. People see the opposite of integrity as duplicity. TQM will not work in an atmosphere of duplicity.

Trust is a by-product of integrity and ethical conduct. Without trust, the framework of TQM cannot be built. Trust fosters full participation of all members. It allows empowerment that encourages pride ownership and it encourages commitment. It allows decision making at appropriate levels in the organization, fosters individual risk-taking for continuous improvement and helps to ensure that measurements focus on improvement of process and are not used to content people. Trust is essential to ensure customer satisfaction. So, trust builds the cooperative environment for TQM.

Group II Bricks

Based on the strong foundation of trust, ethics and integrity, bricks are placed to reach the roof of recognition. Training is very important for employees to be highly productive. Supervisors are solely responsible for implementing TQM within their departments, and teaching their employees the philosophies of TQM. Training that employees require are interpersonal skills, the ability to function within teams, problem solving, decision making, job management performance analysis and improvement, business economics and technical skills. During the creation and formation of TQM, employees are trained so that they can become effective employees for the company.

To become successful in business, teamwork is also a key element of TQM. With the use of teams, the business will receive quicker and better solutions to problems. Teams also provide more permanent improvements in processes and operations. In teams, people feel more comfortable bringing up problems that may occur, and can get help from other workers to find a solution and put into place.

Leadership is possibly the most important element in TQM. It appears everywhere in an organization. Leadership in TQM requires the manager to provide an inspiring vision, make strategic directions that are understood by all and to instill values that guide subordinates. For TQM to be successful in the business, the supervisor must be committed in leading his employees. A supervisor must understand TQM, believe in it and then demonstrate their belief and commitment through their daily practices of TQM. The supervisor makes sure that strategies, philosophies, values and goals are transmitted down throughout the organization to provide focus, clarity and direction. A key point is that TQM has to be introduced and led by top management. Commitment and personal involvement is required from top management in creating and deploying well defined systems, methods and performance measure for achieving those goals.

Group III Binding Mortar

Communication binds everything together and acts as a vital link between all elements of TQM. Communication means a common understanding of ideas between the sender and the receiver. The success of TQM demands communication with and among all the organization members, suppliers and customers. Supervisors must keep open airways where employees can send and receive information about the TQM process. Communication coupled with the sharing of correct information is vital. For communication to be credible the message must be clear and receiver must interpret in the way the sender intended.

There are different ways of communication such as downward communication. This is the dominant form of communication in an organization. Presentations and discussions basically do it. By this, the supervisors are able to make the employees clear about TQM. Upward communication is where the lower level of employees is able to provide suggestions to upper management of the affects of TQM. As employees provide insight and constructive criticism, supervisors must listen effectively to correct the situation that comes about through the use of TQM. This forms a level of trust between supervisors and employees. This is also similar to empowering communication, where supervisors keep open ears and listen to others. Sideways communication is important because it breaks down barriers between departments. It also allows dealing with customers and suppliers in a more professional manner.

Group IV Roof

Recognition is the last and final element in the entire system. It should be provided for both suggestions and achievements for teams as well as individuals. Employees strive to receive recognition for themselves and their teams. Detecting and recognizing contributors is the most important job of a supervisor. As people are recognized, there can be huge changes in self-esteem, productivity, quality and the amount of effort exhorted to the task at hand. Recognition comes in its best form when it is immediately following an action that an employee has performed. Recognition comes in different ways, places and time such as a personal letter from top management, or by award banquets, plaques and trophies. Good performers can be recognized in front of departments, on performance boards and also in front of top management. Recognition can also be given at any time.

Quality Tools and Techniques

Tools and techniques are used to identify problems and to identify and implement solutions within an organization or a department. They can be used with minimal training by staff at all levels and help to provide a more focused examination of quality issues.

Cause and effect

The cause and effect diagram is also called the fishbone chart because of its appearance and the Ishakowa chart after the man who popularized its use in Japan. Its most frequent use is to list the cause of particular problems. Cause and effect diagrams allow a team to identify, explore and graphically display, in increasing detail, all of the possible causes related to a problem or condition to discover its root cause(s). The diagram is generally drawn up by a group of people who are involved in the process being examined. This method is guided by a facilitator who ensures that everyone can contribute to the discussion.

Flowcharts

Flowcharts are diagrammatic representations of processes. They can be constructed using a very small number of symbols. Flowcharts allow a team to identify the actual flow or sequence of events in a process that any product or service follows. Flowcharts can be applied to anything from the travels of an invoice or the flow of materials, to the steps in making a sale or servicing a product.

Though producing flowcharts is time consuming there are a number of benefits to using them. The interaction between activities becomes much clearer using a flowchart than looking at a text-based description. It is much easier to identify duplication of effort, and work that does not add to the value of the process.

Gantt Charts

A Gantt chart is a useful method of planning and monitoring a project. It shows the progress of each element of a project on a separate line, plotted against the estimated or actual time for each element. The elements can run consecutively, or in parallel. Gantt charts show the likely overall timescale for projects and, by updating them regularly, it is possible to highlight any potential problems that could alter the completion date.

The chart should be updated regularly, using different colors or shading to show completed, current and pending elements of the project and altering timescales where appropriate.

Histograms

A histogram is used to demonstrate the variation in a set of data. It shows the frequency with which particular values occur and is a tool that helps identify the cause of problems in a process by the shape of the distribution as well as the width of the distribution. A histogram summarizes data from a process that has been collected over a period of time, and graphically presents its frequency distribution in bar form.

Pareto Analysis

Pareto was an Italian economist who realized that 85% of the country’s wealth was in the hands of 15% of the people. This basic principle, sometimes called the 80/0 rule, appeared to be applicable to vast numbers of numerical facts.

The Pareto shows the distribution of items and arranges them from the most frequent to the least frequent with the final bar being miscellaneous. This tool is a graphical picture of the most frequent causes of a particular problem. It shows where to put the organization’s initial effort to get the most gain. Simply stated, the Pareto assists an organization to focus efforts on the problems that offer the greatest potential for improvement by showing their relative frequency or size in a descending bar graph.

Conclusion

Total Quality Management is regarded as a key success factor in maintaining a competitive advantage. The belief is to do everything right from the first time in an open management culture. It enables an organization to consolidate and to strengthen their position as a world class company. A TQM movement cannot succeed unless employees are involved in the various businesses processed in an organization. The evidence of the correlation between successful TQM programs and competitive advantage is growing. TQM tools and techniques, properly implemented, have the power to create sustainable competitive advantage.

Knowledge gained over a period of time in any field is certainly

beneficial for future achievements and advancements in that field.

Past achievements set a platform for further enhancements . Each

piece of contribution adds a rung to the ladder of success in an area.

But,at the same time it is prudent to remember that starting fresh in an

area without getting influenced from previous or other sources guarantees

a new direction and style of work . Secondly, there is always a first time

for everything in the world, when the subject was new and untouched and

was taken up by somebody for the first time. Thirdly, the nature and type

of area of work also decides to some extent whether past achievements and

knowledge is required to excel in that area or not.

Past knowledge of a subject gives a clue to start for a novice in that field.

One does not have to start from scratch if some work has already been done

in the past . It saves him precious time which he can utilise for enhancements

in that field. In this way, the knowledge acculmulated from past work prevents

one to repeat the work already done and equips him with the necessary skill

required to advance from the point at which work was left in the past. A fitting

example is in the field of medical science. Today, we have made great advancements

in the area of medical research. We have tamed many deadly diseases and raised human

life expectancy to a considerable extent. All this progress has not been made in a day.

Thousands of researchers over hundreds of years have slowly and gradually built up

the rich information base of medical science today. The bacon of knowledge has passed

from one generation to other and in the process has undergone enhancement and

additions. Citing another example, a student of computer science acquires a degree

after reading the books dealing with basic concepts of computer science. After

getting equipped with the basics , he is ready to take up further research in any

specialied computer field and make his contributions to it. Without the basics, itwould be nearly impossible for him to grasp the intricacies of the subject and

move further in his research. Thus , preacquired basics compiled in the book were

a precursor for the students success.

Starting work in a area with a completely fresh mindset uninfluenced by any

previous works is in principle key to innovation. There are no preset notions

, beliefs or practices. One is free to experiment in his own way and reach new

conclusions. Such an approach allows one to look at an issue from an angle

different from previous men and gives a comletely novel meaning to things

under observation. One may have to put in more effort and time this way but

the end results may be very significant in opening doors to newer solutions.

To support this claim , let us take the example of Mahatma Gandhi. At the time

of Indian struggle for independence , world had known only one way to seek

independence and that was violence. Gandhiwas strongly aligned with truth and non

violence and successfully lead the country to independence

with his new found theory of non-violence.The fact that Gandhi

ignored the previousindependence seeking practices and believed

a novel concept of non-violence didnt stop him from becoming

a success and a lesson for the world .

The ocean of knoweldge is too vast and deep that it is impossible to discover

it in a single lifetime. Knowledge gained by one individual becomes the starting

point of another in the journey of advancements . Man could never had landed on moon ,

had newton not discovered the law of gravity. But the phenomenon of gravity

was unheard of before Newton discovered it . He made a great contribution to the

physics world without being influenced by any past work done by any physicist before.

The crux of the above discussion is that although knowledge gained thru past

work is useful for further enhancements in that area and helps save time

and effort, yet it is not essential to make significant contributions to the

particular area of work. A work approach which is new , different from the

old ones and independent in its spirit too may lead us to wonderful solutions

equally significant and essential.

Abortion is a procedure, either surgical or medical, to end a pregnancy by removing the fetus and placenta from the uterus. Any interruption of a human pregnancy before the third trimester is known as abortion. There are several different types of abortions but there are two major categories. One is a spontaneous abortion, called miscarriage. Usually this is not done intentionally and it usually happens after the first few weeks of pregnancy. A miscarriage is the natural loss of a fetus and has little danger to the mother.

Then there is the induced abortion that is done intentionally. Induced abortions are of various kinds, including nonprofessional efforts by the pregnant woman or others to end an unwanted pregnancy.

In the first week there are micro-abortions caused by ‘contraceptive’ drugs and devices. Contraceptive agents such as intrauterine device (IUD), Norplant,

Depo- Provera, progesterone only pills, low-dose contraceptive combination pills, and the morning after pills prevent implantation which kills the unborn baby at one week of life.

Other abortions that are performed in the first trimester are menstrual extraction, suction aspiration, and dilation and curettage.

The menstrual extraction is done before the pregnancy test is even positive. It takes out the uterine lining and fertilized egg if present. A menstrual extraction is done by suction. A smaller tube is used which requires less dilation of the cervix.

The suction-aspiration is also known as the vacuum aspiration. It usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes and can be done safely in a clinic. It is a minor surgical abortion. The abortionist immobilizes the womb opening and stretches it open. This is often difficult because it is not ready to open. Then, a hollow plastic tube with a knife-like edge and a suction device at the other end is put into the uterus. This suction tears the babies body into pieces. Then the placenta is cut from the inner wall of the uterus. The scraps are sucked into a bin and the pieces are often recognizable. This suction is times more powerful than a home vacuum cleaner. The uterine tissue is examined to make sure that all the tissue has been removed and the abortion is complete. Sometimes a D&C is needed afterwards if all the tissue is not removed. A normal recovery includes irregular bleeding similar to a menstrual period, cramps, and emotional reactions. There is no evidence of childbearing problems among women who have had this procedure says Dr J.C Wilke.

The dilation and curettage (D&C) is used for many different reasons. The most common is used to determine the health of the uterine lining. Sometimes the procedure can correct some of the problems in the uterus such as polyps, scar tissue, or overgrowth. It is normally very short and the patient can go home soon afterwards. When a D&C is used, as an abortive method, the procedure is similar to the suction aspiration. The difference is an abortionist inserts a curette, a loop-shaped steel knife, into the uterus and cute the placenta and the baby into pieces then scrape them out into a plastic tub.

Second trimester abortions include prostaglandin, saline amniocentesis, dilation and evacuation, and intra-cardiac injections. Prostaglandins are naturally produced chemical compounds that normally assist in the birthing process. Prostaglandin is injected into the amniotic sac which induces a violent labor and the birth of a child usually too young to survive. The labor and contractions are more violent than normal and sometime the child will die from that alone.

In the 770s and 180s, the most common second trimester was the saline amniocentesis or salt poisoning abortion. An abortionist inserts a large needle into the abdominal wall of the mother and in the baby’s amniotic sac. A salt solution is injected into the amniotic fluid. At this point, the baby breathes in and swallows the poison. The solution also burns of the outer layer of the baby’s skin and the baby usually convulses, and then dies. The mother is usually also giving prostaglandin which is used to induce violent premature labor and delivery. When successful the mother goes into labor about one day later and delivers a dead baby. Some maternal deaths have been reported from accidental injection of the saline solution into the circulatory system. The deaths have been from acute kidney failure, seepage through the uterine puncture to the abdominal cavity, and from infections. J.A Stallworthy et al., “Legal Abortion A Critical Assessments of its Risks.” Lancet, December 4, 176, p.145

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) is usually done in an operating room. Sometimes a D&E is recommended for women diagnosed in the nd trimester with a fetus that has severe medical problems or abnormalities. First, a laminaria or synthetic dilator is inserted 4 hours before the procedure to help dilate the cervix. Dilating the cervix reduces the risk of any injury. An abortionist then inserts an instrument that resembles pliers into the uterus and grabs a hold of a part of the baby’s body, and, with a twisting motion, tears it from the baby’s body. This is repeated over and over again until all body parts are torn apart. The spine is then snapped in half and the skull is crushed. This is done because the spine and skull are too big to be removed.. After the procedure is done, a nurse will reassemble the body parts to make sure all of them were removed. This method is very dangerous but a report from the U.S. Center for Disease Control, stated that it is still safer for the mother than the salt poisoning or Prostaglandin method.

Multi-fetal pregnancies have become more common says William Cates, there for intra-cardiac injections are being used. This is usually used to kill a baby from a multi-fetal pregnancy or one that has birth defects. At about 4 months, a needle is inserted through the mother’s abdomen, into the chest and heart of one of the fetal babies and a poison is injected to kill him or her. Sometimes this method results in the loss of all the babies.

Third Trimester Abortions include the partial birth abortion, hysterectomy, RU 486, and methotrexate. The Partial Birth Abortion (D&X) is done after 4 or 5 months of pregnancy. This procedure is one over a three-day period. The first day the patient is evaluated with an ultrasound. The woman’s cervix is prepped, anesthetized, and dilated to -11mm. Five, six, or seven large Dilapan is placed into the cervix to dilate over night. The second day is just more dilation and a check up. This time anywhere between 15 and 5 Dilapan are put into the cervix to help dilate over night. Then finally on the third day the surgical assistant will rupture the water bag if it has not been done already. An ultrasound is done to help the surgeon locate the position of the baby. Then the surgeon will insert a large grasping forceps through the vagina and onto the uterus. The full body, except the head, of the baby is delivered and a pair of scissors is forced into the base of the skull and the scissors are opened to make the whole larger. A suction aspiration is then performed to empty the uterus. The woman is observed for a minimum of hours following surgery. A Pad check and vital signs are taken every 0 minutes. Women with minimal bleeding after 0 minutes are encouraged to walk about the building or outside between checks. This method was abandoned decades ago because it was too dangerous. Abortionist now use something similar to the cesarean section, called the hysterectomy. (Cates 8)

Like a cesarean section, the abdomen and the womb are opened surgically. This procedure nearly almost results in a live birth. While the baby is still inside the womb, the umbilical cord may be cut which then suffocates the baby. Or the baby will be fully delivered and after it is lifted away, a nurse will place a towel over the baby’s head to suffocate him. By the time the baby is taken to the laboratory, he is usually already dead.

RU 486, also known as the french Abortion Pill, mifeprestone, mifeprex, is an early option pill that is used to end a pregnancy from the time you find out you’re pregnant to 4 days after your last menstrual period. This pill can only be taken during this time. This method is %- 5% effective. RU 486 kills a developing baby after his or her heart has begun to beat. This drug blocks a vital nutrient hormone, Progesterone. The baby will usually starve to death and die. This type of procedure takes four visits to the clinic. During the first visit, the doctor/abortionist will do a full history, physical exam, and blood count on the woman. An Ultrasound exam is done to confirm the age of the baby and to see if there is a tubal pregnancy. The woman must also sign permission and, in some states wait one or more days. At some clinics, a counseling session is required. The second visit is very short. The woman is given two mifeprestone tablets to take. (Each containing 00 micrograms of misoprestol) Misoprestol causes uterine contractions that helps end a pregnancy. She is sent home and will return the next day for her third visit. Normally a prostaglandin drug is given to produce hard labor. Usually the body parts are delivered that day. And finally, the fourth visit is just to check if the pregnancy has completely ended. The fourth visit is especially important because if she has not completely aborted or if there is still bleeding, she will need an ultrasound to determine if the uterus is empty. If not, a D&C procedure is done. Sometimes a D&C is performed just because the woman is bleeding badly.

RU 486 will produce an abortion 5% of the time. The other 5% will be advised to have a surgical abortion. If the RU 486 doesn’t work and the mother decides to carry the baby full term, there could be long-term complications for the infant. These deformities can either show up at birth or 0 years later. These drugs can result in a heart attack of the woman so therefore, a crash cart with defibrillator, EKG, and IV equipment are in the facility.

There is another type of pill that is called methotrexate. It was invented to attack fast growing cancer cell but it is also kills an unborn baby. It works roughly within the same time frame as RU 486, but in a different fashion. RU 486 starves the baby until it dies; where as, methotrexate is a direct poison and kills the developing baby. Methotrexate is administered by an intramuscular injection instead of a pill. (Hausknecht, M.D. “New England Journal of Medicine p. ) It disintegrates the protective and nourishing enviroment killing the baby after his or her heart has begun to beat. The baby dies of not only starvation but of oxygen and fluids, he or she needs to survive. This pill works along with prostaglandin. Just like the RU 486 pill, a mother can abort anywhere from to 7 days later.

There are risks that occur with any abortion done. The most common side effects are nausea, cramping, diarrhea, bone marrow depression, severe anemia, and liver damage. One of the risks following a surgical abortion is that scar tissue will form in the uterus, making it difficult to conceive again because the fetus cannot implant on the scar tissue. Scar tissue can also block the fallopian tubes either partially or completely which often results in an “ectopic” or “tubal” pregnancy. (“BC Health Guide” p1)

If even a tiny piece of tissue remains, severe infection can develop. This infection can lead to bleeding, cramping, fever, and even sterility. That is why after several abortions a D&C is done.

For example abrupt changes in mood or attitude, losing interest in school, sports, or other activities that used to be important, heightened secrecy about actions or possessions or associating with a new group of friends whom your child refuses to discuss. All of these are symptoms of children drinking alcohol. Parents should know that first use of alcohol typically begins around age 1, 80% of high school seniors have used alcohol and approximately / of teenagers who drink report that they can buy their own alcoholic beverages.

In my opinion parents, schools and youth should take more action in fighting against alcohol especially in youth. We don’t need to be a example of alcohol addicts. We can think for ourselves and should have the courage to say no and stick by that.

In conclusion this information is really helpful to youth and parents to see where our future stands. Children are our future and if they are all drunks we have no future and all of the work that was put forth would be in vain.

Well first of all, I had to, because I need to register to get information, they think that this will help it grow, when all it really does is drive people without an essay away. But I will submit this essay hoping, more like dreaming, that they will learn something from this. Dont make people write essays. They probably think that most people would save essays they wrote. They are wrong. I delete the essay because I hate it, and I want more space on my computer. Would you keep an essay you were forced to write because some jerk was out of control and the teacher decided to give you an essay on why you should be quiet, or worse...On music. Yes, I would have had that submitted except it was handwritten. And why 50 words, people usually state, with a simple topic, their information in less than 50 words. As most of you have guessed, I didnt have 50 words, then they made me. Damn Commies! (Just kidding) and after the third try I tried again only to be met with that dreadful sign that states that I still dont have the required amount of words, will it work this time?

No, it didnt. Why do they want the rights to our essays, do they think we are stupid? If we knew it was worth money why would we submit it here. Im sure most of us like money. Will it work this time?

I hope you are learning lessens from this illy written paragraph condemning this idea.

I am going to talk to you about the movie Kiss the Girls..Created from the novel by james Patterson.Kiss the Girls can be placed in the Crime Fiction genre. Then further can be placed in the thriller Genre within Crime Fiction, then furthermore can be placed into the psychological thriller and the Police Procedural branches within Crime fiction.

To understand how exactly it fits into this genre, and how it contributes to it,we must understand first what Crime fiction is and then what the basic structure of this film and basic thrillers and Police procedurals may be.

Crime fiction is incredibly vast and complicated and things cannot be simply catagorized as Crime fiction and be easily understood as the area holds a whole world of sub genres, each one with a wide range of intriguing Crime fiction texts.

Kiss the Girls involves two serial Killers..one in North Carolina and the other in Los Angeles. The crimes that they are both commiting are very similar and the FBI thinks they might be connected or carried out by the same person.Even more, the killers seem to be talking to each other,or competing with each-other in their actions.

Police psychologist,Alex Cross is our hero,as in all of James Pattersons novels.Cross is unintentionally involved in the case, when his niece Naomi is kidnapped from her university. After becoming involved ,Cross discovers numerous women, all beautiful and accomplished have gone missing and two have been found dead. This suggests the malefactor (who calls himself Casanova) is a collector.

We follow Cross in his determination to find the 7 girls including his niece as we try to beat him in figuring out who the murderer is and where he is keeping these young girls.Interesting facts unfold themselves as we realize the killers are infact working together and find secret places in their upmarket apartments.A beautiful medical intern Dr. Kate McTiernan (Ashley Judd) is taken from her home in the middle of the night by this casanova...She is taken into his underground nest and finally journeys her way out as we follow the thrilling scene as she fights for her life.Kate then becomes alexs sidekick for the rest of the film and assists him in solving the complications of the mystery.

Crime fiction is for our purposes narrative fiction which deals in some way with a crime.

This is a very broad definition, but the definitions change from context to context. Police procedurals must be realistic depictions of official investigations. They emphasize teamwork, methodical pavement-pounding, lucky breaks, administrative hassles, and endless paperwork. Procedurals were until recently an exclusively American phenomenon; and they retain a working-class, down-to-earth, close to the streets feel -- including abundant profanity, irony, sick humor, and tragedy.

Kiss the girls fits into the catagory of Police Procedural as it follows the detective and policce force in trying to solve a crime. It is set in some part in a police station and deals with the issues inside the police force. The way things take place in the movie is very realistic to the police force, therefore the audience remains interested.

A Thriller is a text that holds a high level of action and particular type of plot instead of solving a crime that occurs at or before the beginning of the narration, the thriller is built around a more linear plot device such as a chase, a showdown, a rescue, an act of vigilante justice, or a race against time to prevent a crime from occurring. There can also be a whodunit element, but it is subordinate to the main plot device. Almost all thriller protagonists are male, and they usually arent the weedy, whiny, Woody Allen type either. The average thriller is longer than the average mystery, which makes a rapid pace essential to success; when skillfully written, thrillers can also carry the load of bigger themes than strict realism will allow.A thriller will start with a serious problem,a protagonist(our hero) who tries to solve the problem only to find it gets worse and worse. The plot rises to a dramatic confrontation with the antagonist (bad guy),usually on the bad guys territory & ends with a short denouement(wrapup). The plot usually will address life and death issues and nearly always put the protagonist and other characters close to him in danger. The antagonists are normally seriously malevolent.

Kiss the girls fits into the Catagory of a psychological thriller as its protagonist, Alex Cross, is,infact a Police psychologist and he uses Psychological techniques to attempt to understand the Profile of the Killers and work out why certain things are taking place. It is also defined as this because the killer is incredibly mentally unstable and believes he is Casanova and believes these beautiful young women are in love with him.Alex Cross shows us this perfectly when he says to Kate , however much you hate him, multiply that by a hundred..thats how much he thinks he loves you

It also follows the structure and has characteristics of a thriller.Alex Cross takes part in the chase of the Antagonist, casanova and his assistant, rudolf. It is a race against time to stop the murders of the remaining girls from taking place, for Alex,he is driven by the personal fact he is fighting to save his Nieces life. The thriller starts with the problem of Alexs niece being taken,he trys to solve the problem but only finds out, like the structure of a thriller, that the problem only gets worse and worse and numerous women just like Naomi have been taken, eventhough she is the only black girl. The plot rises as Alex unravels the story with clever clues and ideas in front of our eyes until the moment of confrontation comes with casanova, who is infact a police officer we have trusted for the entire film at Kates house.

Kiss the girls doesnt actually have one time of confrontation but begins with one time of confrontation between Rudolf and Alex Cross,at Rudolfs house after the officers had followed him around all night. He gets away and Cross continues to try to solve the case. The next point of confrontation is where Casanova keeps his young women and rapes and abuses them.Cross gets inside and casanova and Rudolf get away.He follows them, shooting Rudolf dead with Casanova escaping. The final point of confrontation is in Kates house, when Casanova goes to visit her at the same time Cross is realizing who the antagonist is.It is then a race against time as Kate is alone with this crazy man and Cross is driving to her house hoping he isnt too late.It is then wrapped up when we see the Antagonist shot and killed by our protagonist, the hero.

Kiss the Girls contributes to the Genre in many ways. When a text contributes to a genre it will either stick to the outline of its genre or it will subvert from it,expanding the readers views on the genre and explanding other writers views on it.

Please note that this sample paper on Kiss The Girls is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Kiss The Girls, we are here to assist you. Susan Bordo works at the University of Kentucky as the Otis A. Singletary Chair of Humanities.

In Hunger as Ideology, Bordo argues that “the various cultural ideologies, both explicit and implicit, conscious and unconscious at work in an advertisement often play a powerful role in the way we think about the world and our place in it. One of the issues that Bordo delves into is the falsehood that women do not eat much. Granted, some women have petite appetites. However, the majority of women only portray this image because society views women that eats little to be attractive and feminine. Bordo gives an example of this type of ideology in her section entitled, “The Woman Who Does Not Each Much.” She opens with a commercial for Fiber Thin where two French girls who are dressing up in their mothers beautiful clothes admire one girl’s mother for being so thin and not eating much. They also relish in the fact that they know about her secret product - dietary supplements. Bordo uses this example of the two young French girls to show that this food obsession begins at a young age. Not only does this commercial condone the use of dietary supplements in young girls but it also praises women that eat little and creates a falsehood in the mind of society about the eating habits of women. It is a common site to see young teenagers, in their prime, starving themselves in order to fit the mold. Bordo realizes this fact and writes “almost all of us who can afford to be eating well are dieting and hungry almost all of the time.”

Advertisements stereotype reality of the world to create an image of what we as Americans aspire to be. Advertisers know that self-esteem has a lot do with persuading consumers to buy their products. If a woman believes she is ugly and fat, she will be eager to listen to an ad that promises results of beauty and skinniness. She will also be a lot more likely to buy the product. If a man sees a skinny guy on TV talk about a product that helped him gain muscles, the man watching will start to re-evaluate his own body and consider buying the product. We all judge people based on their outward appearance whether subconsciously or not. Americans tend to look at someone and assume we know everything about them because of what they are wearing and what kind of car they drive, or what kind of house they live in.

Bordo writes extensively on the ideas of the female body in relation to eating and beauty and attaining the perfect “look.” In the beginning of her essay she says that, “today, all we experience as meaningful are appearances.” Bordo believes that women will always want to look younger and slimmer. She believes that as long as companies continue to use advertisements with young, thin girls telling women they can “look like them,” the companies will always make a lot of money. She also talks about the subliminal coding used in advertising. She uses an example of an advertisement for an eyeliner. The ad reads, “Soft felt tip gives you absolute control of your line.” She believes that it is almost impossible for a consumer to glance at the ad and read the words “life” instead of “line.” The advertisers were able to make an eyeliner ad into something that makes the viewer think about being in control of their life. Bordo reinforces the notion of control in “Men Eat and Women Prepare.” This sense of control appears when the woman who has prepared the food watches as her husband devours it. “She who stands … famished before her husband, while he devours, stretched at ease, the produce of her exertions; waits his tardy permission without a word or a look of impatience, and feeds, with the humblest gratitude, and the shortest intermission of labor, on the scraps and offals which he disdains.” This woman shows her ability to control her desires.

In the section, “Food and Love” Bordo explains how women demonstrate their love for others by baking or preparing for dinner for others. The slogan “Nothin says lovin’ like something from the oven,” is one example. Bordo mentions the fact that little girls are often shown learning how to prepare food for others and rarely seen being fed. In the ad for Gold Medal Flour, the young girl with flour on her overalls and shirt sleeves pushed up, taste tests the batter she and her mother, who is seen reading the recipe book, have prepared. Bordo says that the ad places mother at home and daughter preparing for her future role in the kitchen, both in their stereotypical roles.

As an example of Bordo’s said rules about old dualities and ideologies such as women should serve men, become homemakers, and basically do everything to keep their men happy while they are out in the blue collar work force earning a living for the entire family is demonstrated in the advertisement for Betty Crocker Black Walnut Cake (Fig. 1). It is implied that if a woman loved her family she would take time to bake and cook. The woman was expected to thrive on making her man happy. This advertisement wanted to give women the impression that women were pleased when men were pleased. Cooking and serving were supposed to be especially pleasant for the woman. Nothing could satisfy a man more than food with the exception of sex. If a woman wanted to please a man, the most definite way to do so was through his stomach.

In the advertisement for Van Camp Pork & Beans (Fig. ), the ad featured pork and beans in an elegant dish accompanied with hot dogs and a homemade loaf of bread. In addition, there are an abundance of food, which possibly suggests the woman was hosting some sort of dinner party. Therefore, even though pork and beans in a can is considered a convenience food, the implication of the woman being a hostess for a party also sends the message that the woman was taking the time to prepare a ton of other dishes in order to entertain and satisfy people other than herself.

Bordo illustrates the differences between males and females in food ads. The man in a food ad eating voraciously is seen as manly and even at times adorable. A woman in a food ad seen eating in this same fashion is seen as out of control and unfeminine. An interesting way women are persuaded into buying a product is by switching the person in the ad from a woman to a man. A man advertising a food product gives the idea that if it could satisfy even their “huge appetite,” then it would definitely satisfy a woman. Bordo argues that women are represented differently in advertisements due to their relationship with food. For example, the Haagen-Dazs ad. This two page ad has a picture of both a man and a woman eating the same brand of ice cream. In the first picture the woman is eating ice cream in a delicate manner. She is eating a tiny ice cream bar and has only taken one small bite. This picture shows the woman using control while eating. The next picture is of a man who has just eaten an entire pint of ice cream. He ate it in such a manner that he left the container on its side and is licking every morsel of ice cream from the spoon.

In furtherance of Bordo’s argument that men and women are treated differently in food advertisements, Fig. is an advertisement for Natur-Tender steaks. The picture depicts a man hard at work on the outdoor grill. Since barbecues occur outside in nature, they are considered to be masculine. Barbecues represent a time when men can whip up a great meal in a rough and tough environment. The outdoors was a place where it was socially acceptable for a man to be. But still this advertisement is targeting the woman because she had the purchasing power and was in charge of buying the necessary groceries for the event.

Advertisers are paid to get into our heads and first see what we secretly aspire to be, and then gives us the opportunity to follow our dreams through a product they wish to sell. Bordo writes “any fool knows that advertisers manipulate reality in the service of selling their products…However, were it a meaningful or usable knowledge, it is unlikely that we would be witnessing the current spread of diet and exercise mania across racial and ethnic groups, or the explosion of technologies aimed at bodily ‘correction ‘ and ‘enhancement.’ We allow advertisers to manipulate us because it is a way of life.

The way that females view advertisements appear very obvious to advertisers. Advertisement agencies now how to interest women, and how to make them think. Being in control is something that is very important to women these days. In the society that we live, the only way to be normal on the outside is to be slim. Beauty is another consideration, but being slim is a huge concern among women. By gaining control of your mind it becomes easier to gain this sense of control.

How To Watch Your Brother Die

By Micheal Lassel

This poignant poem was first published in 185 in Poems for the Lost and Un-Lost Boys a book of collected poems by Micheal Lassel.

The poem begins as the main character, the brother of the soon to be deceased titular sibling, is contacted and told his brother has a very short time to live. The health brother immediately embarks on a trip to spend the few precious moments left in his brother’s life by his side. This tale is delivered in the structure as a poem, perhaps to emphasize the crescendos of pathos and to isolate the emotional moments in the deceiving simplicity of its delivery. The following stanza finds the main character as he is entering his ailing brother’s hospital room, only to be met by his sibling’s gay lover, ever vigilant, by his side

Write my Essay on How to Watch Your Brother Die.

essay writing service

Watch the lovers eye as they stare into

your brothers eyes as they stare into

space.

Wonder what they see there.

Remember the time he was jealous and

opened your eyebrow with a sharp stick.

Forgive him out loud

even if he cant

understand you.

Realize the scar will be

all thats left of him.

This particularly strong stanza reveals the protagonist’s inner struggle to attempts to empathize with the lovers obvious sorrow and somewhat bittersweet as the man recalls a scar, given to him by his dying brother, in more innocent times. There is a bit of foreshadowing here as the reader starts to sense the irony of forgiveness granted at a time when words would be meaningless.

Watch the tears well up in his eyes.

Say, Im sorry. I dont know what it means to be the lover of another man.

Hear him say,

Its like a wife, only the commitment is

deeper because the odds against you are so much

greater.

This is an excellent metaphor the poet uses to properly convey the emotional strength and validity of this “non-traditional” couple’s love. The metaphor also drives home the point of the constant scrutiny and obstacles such a relationship must endure in the face of a disapproving society.

The poem follows the main character as he joins his brothers lover in a quest to Mexico in order to find unapproved drugs that might help his brother live longer, as well as detailing the frustration of their eventual failure.

During the course of this quest, he experiences first-hand the ignorance and intolerance towards homosexuals as he is mistaken for one at the Mexico/USA border crossing;

Begin to grow loud.

Feel the lovers hand on your arm

restraining you. See in the guards eye

how much can a man hate another man.

Say to the lover, How can you stand it.

Hear him say, You get used to it.

Think of one of your children getting used to

another mans hatred.

This stanza conveys the main character’s growing impatience with the ignorance and intolerance of the world his brother has to live, and inevitably die, in. This is driven home by the protagonist’s thoughts of his children being subject to such irrational hatred.

Death finally claims the ailing brother and he is finally at peace from a world that never understood him and a brother that is only know beginning to understand him. The surviving brother once again faces ignorance and fear in the form of an uninformed funeral director

Stare at the face of the funeral director

when he tells you he will not

embalm the body for fear of

contamination. Let him see in your eyes

how much a man can hate another man

This stanza brings into focus the extent of AIDS phobia, which in 185, was still early in the disease’s public history. It was a time of ignorance and intolerance. A time of people dying alone and uncared for in their homes, misunderstood and transformed into pariahs by a mysterious “gay” disease.

As the poem reaches is end, the brother is confronted by his dead sibling’s lover who tells him to

Forgive yourself for not wanting to know him

after he told you. He did.

The final stanza finds the main character on a plane heading home to his family, thoughts swirling in his head as he stares into the bottom of a scotch glass

Fly first class and drink scotch. Stroke

your split eyebrow with a finger and

think of your brother alive. Smile

at the memory and think

how your children will feel in your arms,

warm and friendly and without challenge.

This is a poignant conclusion to what has been an emotional journey of discovery for the man. He finally comes to terms with his deceased brother’s alternate lifestyle, but alas it is too late. He thinks of holding his children, “without challenge”, in stark contrast to the discomfort he felt in supporting and accepting his dead brother, and perhaps thinking of when he and his sibling were children, before life got too complicated to reconcile.

The poet uses an interesting form of narration. The reader is never really clear who the narrator is, but after reading it a few times I was left with the sense that the narrator is in fact the dying brother. I came to this conclusion because the narrator has insight into the internal dialogues of all the characters in the play, something that only a disembodies spirit, perhaps, would have access to. All in all, the poem is delivered almost in the form of a cautionary tale of tolerance and understanding. The lesson learned is that although we may not always understand or accept the way a person lives their life, it should be celebrated that they lived that life on their terms while they could.

Karl Marx is often remembered as a critic of capitalism and nothing more. The truth is that though he did criticize capitalism, he still used parts of a capitalist society to infer his theories on classes in society as well as individual responsibilities. He accepts the jobs that must be done in order for a society to exist but uses a different method for completing the tasks. Marx defined human labor as “the medium of interaction between subjects and this material or natural domain.”

I classify Marx as a critical theorist because he calls for a radical change away from capitalism. The change is from a non-egalitarian notion to an egalitarian society where the cost of life is the same. The basis for his theory is that every task must be completed in order for the society as a whole to function. The motivation for doing the jobs is that every person in society must contribute and if they get a job that is less desirable, they only have to do it for a few hours and get the same benefits as everyone else. Marx believes that this allows for a more rounded person that is well educated and not stressed out because of working so much. He understands that family time is very important and there is no reason that you should throw yourself into work and not see the people you care about.

Marx views the individual in society as “a creative agent striving toward self-fulfillment.” This is very interesting coming from a man who is often interpreted as a complete collective thinker. He also believed that “it was not the individual but society that was responsible for unnecessary suffering and for human unhappiness.” His theories seem to be leading to a collective where everyone in the society has one mind and they all think as one with no free thought. His definition for the individual suggests otherwise. If we were all striving for self-fulfillment, then that would mean that we are not acting as one, but acting for ourselves. The key is to remember that everything an individual does has an impact on the society as a whole and that in itself is the motivation to do good.

The society is thought of as a collection of individuals that are working together in equal parts to accomplish a “good life”. Marx thinks that the introduction of the capitalist mode of production caused an increase in the false perception of individuals as autonomous beings. As an individual it is possible to be good and strive towards self-fulfillment, but without everyone in the society doing so, the society as a whole will remained unfulfilled.

Marx’s methodology was fundamentally Hegelian, with one difference. He believed that “the moving force of social change was the struggle for human control over the material world.” The purpose of thinking, according to Marx is to “assimilate the concrete” to reproduce real practical activity as an abstract and mental category. This implies that while analyzing, you are constantly switching between the concrete descriptions and the highly abstract description. Without fully understanding both portions, you cannot understand the subject.

Marx’s largest contribution to sociology is his thoughts on the collective. Most places of employment have some underlying direction towards a no “I” in team philosophy. It is accepted that you will get more accomplished at a higher quality if you work together as a team. Everyone has the same goal for example customer service, and by doing your individual part, the customer is satisfied. Working in a team does not mean that you lose individual accomplishment. If you put the same piece on a car part all day long, you are still contributing to the great whole. While working as a team, the car will be eventually put together accomplishing the goal. It is used every day in most types of jobs.

Prime Minister, Tony Blair

Rt Hon Tony Blair MP, born on 6 May 15, was elected leader of the Labour Party on 1 July 14 as MP for Sedgefield. TONY BLAIR traces his political genesis to the paralysis of his father. In 16, when Blair was 11, his father suffered a stroke while campaigning for a Conservative seat in Parliament. After his illness, my father transferred his ambitions onto his kids, Blair said in an interview with The Sunday Times Magazine 14.

Unlike John Major’s, Blair’s upbringing was privileged. His father was a law lecturer, and Blair was educated at the elite Fettes College in Edinburgh before going to Oxford for law school in 17. Blair was known as a gregarious student and as the gyrating bass guitar and lead singer for a rock band called Ugly Rumours.

Blair was a practicing barrister from 176 to 18, specializing in employment and industrial law. He joined the Labour Party in 176, but was disillusioned by some of its main causesespecially nationalization of industry and increased power of trade unionsand its leadership, including Prime Minister James Callaghan, who served from 176 to 17. After a series of labour strikes in late 178a period referred to as Britain’s “Winter of Discontent,” the Labour Party was widely perceived to be controlled by the country’s unions. Thatcher and her Tory Party were able to ride Britain’s dissatisfaction with the Labour Party to a landslide victory in 17, ushering in an era of Conservative domination that would last for the next two

decades. Blair’s first successful foray into politics came in 18, when he was elected to Parliament as a Labour MP from Sedgefield, near his hometown of Durham.

Before entering Parliament, he read law at St Johns College, Oxford, he was called to the Bar at Lincolns Inn in 176, and practiced as a barrister until 18, specializing in employment and industrial law. While working as a lawyer, Blair met his wife in 175. They have three sons Euan, Nicky and Leo, and a daughter Kathryn.

He joined the Labour Party that same year and won a seat in Parliament in 18, where he immediately trumpeted his views as a reformer of a party struggling against irrelevancy. After being trounced by Margaret Thatcher in 187, Neil Kinnock, Labour’s leader at the time, worked to change the party and promoted Blair. The young politician got his big break when Kinnock’s successor, John Smith, died, and Blair vaulted to the top party post.

He entered Parliament in June 18 at the age of 0. He was promoted to the Treasury front bench team in 185 and in 187 he became spokesperson on trade and industry with special responsibility for consumer affairs and the City. He was elected to the Shadow Cabinet in 188, and was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for Energy. In the following year he was made Shadow Secretary of State for Employment, and forged a new industrial relations policy which ended Labours support for the closed shop.

Following the general election defeat in 1, the late leader John Smith appointed him Shadow Home Secretary. He successfully wrested the law and order issue from the Conservatives. A strategy based on the slogan tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime was Labours key campaigning theme that year.

In September 1 he was elected to Labours National Executive Committee, the ruling body of the party. He led, with John Prescott, the drive to turn Labour into a

mass-membership party, and by 17 Labour had more than 400,000 members. Blair represented a new direction in Labour politics, away from the left-wing ideologies and socialist focus that characterized the party in the late 70s and early 80s. He served as opposition speaker for Treasury affairs from 184 to 187 and for trade and industry from 187 to 188. He was elected to Labour’s shadow cabinet in 188, where he was responsible for energy and employment before becoming home secretary in 1. In his work with home affairs, Blair advocated a hard-line Labour stance towards crime that challenged the dominant Conservative government (now headed by John Major) and paralleled the successful strategy of U.S. President’s Bill Clinton’s 1 campaign.

When Blair was elected leader of the Labour Party in July 14, the party had lost four consecutive general elections. Blair embarked on his comprehensive strategy to restructure the party and its platform, changing many of Labour’s traditional goals to bring them more in line with the majority of British voters. He moved quickly to bring in the essential reforms of the party’s constitution and policies, notably replacing Clause IV which was overwhelmingly backed by the party at a special conference in April 15.He placed a new party emphasis on free enterprise and economic reform, coining the slogan “New Labour, New Britain.” While critics called him “Tony Blur” and “Tory Blair” and accused him of standing for nothing so much as being elected, Blair’s aggressive pursuit of modernization proved effective. By the end of his first year as party leader, Labour membership had increased by more than

150,000 people and the party had gained a strong lead in public-opinion polls.

He used his new position to strike a blow in 15 to the sacred leftist Clause IV of the Labour constitution advocating “common ownership of the means of

production, distribution and exchange.” In 16 Tony Blair presented to the party the draft manifesto new Labour, new life for Britain, which set out clearly what new Labour would offer in government. It was endorsed by Conference in October 16, followed by a ballot of the whole membership, and won 5 per cent backing.

In 17 elections Blair campaigned hard to convince the British public that the Labour Party was centrist and fiscally responsible, saying at one point that he would continue the economic policies of his conservative opponent.

On 1 May 17 Tony Blair led the Labour Party to its biggest ever general election victory - the party had a majority of 17. On 7 June 001 he led Labour to a second successive victory in a General Election, winning by another landslide. Labour won a majority of 167. On the steps of Downing Street the day after the election win he described the victory as a mandate for investment and reform.

In May 17, Blair was elected Prime Minister by an overwhelming margin over Major, ending an 18-year stretch of Tory dominance. His success in promoting a resolution of the longstanding conflict in Northern Ireland, as well as his diplomatic efforts to integrate Britain more fully into the European continent, have made him the most popular prime minister in the country’s history. His aggressive stance against Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and the Serbian military during the ethnic

conflict in Kosovo in 1 made him one of the driving forces behind NATO’s air offensive and earned him even more support among the British public.

Though his Labour government seemed to lose much support during such

national crises as the foot-and-mouth disease epidemic that ravaged the countrys livestock in 001, Blair swept to victory in the general election held in June, soundly defeating his Conservative opponent.

As Leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister, Tony Blair has given new direction to the country and begun to build a better Britain with the introduction of a National Minimum Wage, one million more jobs, smaller class sizes in primary schools, and the biggest ever sustained investment in the NHS.

Famous Quotes

“Power without principle is barren, but principle without power is futile. This is a party of government, and I will lead it as a party of government.”

Tony Blair

“I remember hearing him talk and thinking, ‘You ain’t getting anywhere with those ideas, kid.’ But now Blair is doing things that politicians I grew up with would never have dared to even think about.”

Tony Banks, Labour parliamentarian

...we want a union of nations, not a federal superstate, and that vision is shared by the majority of countries and people in Europe. A European superstate would neither have the efficacy nor the legitimacy to meet the global challenge.

Blairs rallying cry no Little England, no Fortress Europe, May 1, 00

This is a just war, based not on any territorial ambitions but on values....No longer is our existence as states under threat. Now our actions are guided by a more subtle blend of mutual self interest and moral purpose in defending the values we cherish. In the end values and interests merge. If we can establish and spread the values of liberty, the rule of law, human rights and an open society then that is in our national interests too. The spread of our values makes us safer. As John Kennedy put it Freedom is indivisible and when one man is enslaved who is free?

Tony Blair in Chicago, April , 1

New Labours big idea is the development of human potential, the belief that there is talent and ability and caring in each individual that often lies unnurtured or discouraged, he said....Mr Blair invoked the experience of his own communist-turned-Conservative father to explain why he had rejected both Thatcherism and traditional socialism in order to embrace a meritocratic vision of equal opportunity for all.

Blair sets out his faith, 14 May 001.
