In The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, the theme revolves around a sin that has been committed. It takes places in the seventeenth century in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Hester Prynne, who had an affair with the local Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, commits the sin. Roger Chillingworth is Hesters husband while the affair is taking place. Because of the affair, Hester and Arthur have a daughter named Pearl. The sin that Hester commits is adultery. Hawthorne uses a variety of symbols throughout The Scarlet Letter, and he symbolizes the scarlet letter A in several ways.

In the Puritan community, A is a sign of punishment, and the red A is worn on the chest of the offenders clothing. The A may mean adultery, Angel and Able. Hester, after years of helping, serving and sympathizing with the townspeople, was viewed by the Puritans to mean Able rather than adulteress; A meant Able; so strong was Hester Prynne, with a womans strength (186). For example, when Hester has won some respect from the Puritans, Such helpfulness was found in her, -so much... that many people refused to interpret the scarlet A by its original signification (186). To the Puritans the letter A also symbolizes an Angel. A great red letter in the sky, the letter A... showed up at Governor Winthrops death in the sky (18). For, as our good Governor Winthrop was made an angel this past night... (18).

The meaning of the A is also different to each of the characters. To Hester it is a constant reminder of humiliation and of the sin that she committed. Dimmesdale believes that the A reminds him of his own guilt, and there is no way that he can forgive himself. The A to Pearl, a young girl, is a bright and mysterious curiosity. Hester Prynne is an English woman who is punished by having to wear the embroidered scarlet letter A on the breasts of her clothing receives public humiliation by standing in front of the townspeople of Boston. The A that Hester wears is ... in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread... (58). Hester Prynne, through the eyes of many Puritans, is an extreme sinner; she has gone against the Puritan ways, committing adultery. For this harsh sin, she must wear a symbol of shame for the rest of her life.

Hester does not name Dimmesdale as Pearls father, and the Puritans view Dimmesdale, their pastor, as a holy man, incapable of any sin. The Puritans ask their children bury them close to Dimmesdales grave believing that he would go to heavenward before them... (164). However, because of the shame and guilt Dimmesdale felt, when thinking of his grave, questioned...whether the grass would ever grow on it, because an accursed thing must there be buried (164)! Pearl is young and really does not understand what the A means that her mother wears upon her breasts.

In the afternoon of a certain summers day, after Pearl grew big enough to run about, she amused herself with gathering handfuls of wild-flowers...flinging them, one by one, at her mothers bosom... (110). Whenever Pearl hits the A, she dances around to celebrate the accomplishments that she makes as a young child. She also does not know, much about the sin that happened between Hester and Dimmesdale.

However, the Romantic philosophies of Hawthorne put down the Puritan beliefs. Hester is a beautiful, young woman who has sinned, but is forgiven. Hawthorne portrays Hester as divine maternity, and she can do nothing wrong. The physical scarlet letter, a Puritanical sign of disownment, and Hester herself are shown through the authors tone and diction as a beautiful, gold and colorful piece.

The people around Hesters everyday life soon forget that Hester committed a sin and has to wear an A which means different things. The A may have been a form of punishment in the Puritan community, but Hester works her way through the shame and humiliation of wearing the A. Many Puritans began to forget about the A Hester wears upon her breasts. Hawthorne uses symbolism throughout the novel to make the meaning of the scarlet letter more meaningful.

William Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a tragedy about a war hero named Macbeth, who follows his ambition with evil and who is repaid with evil. Macbeth has influenced many works of literature through its conflicts between good and evil; heroes and villains; loyalty and treachery; and ambition and morality. In the story, Macbeth is ultimately responsible for the actions that lead to his fate. Although the witches’ predictions are responsible for influencing Macbeth’s thoughts, no one tells Macbeth to kill Duncan. Macbeth is responsible for putting power into the hands of Lady Macbeth and letting her influence him. Finally, Macbeth acknowledges his guilt of wrongdoing and is thereby responsible for his actions. Macbeth’s ambitions spur him on to follow an unstated yet clearly understood plan to kill Duncan. Although the witches’ predictions initiate Macbeth’s desire to become king, no one tells him to kill Duncan. When the second prophecy becomes a reality, Macbeth immediately thinks of murdering Duncan. “I am of Cawdor / If good, why do I yield to that suggestion / Whose image doth unfix my hair” (I, iii, 14-145). For the first time in the story, we see a dark side to the brave and courageous Macbeth. Macbeth sees himself kill his ruler. Macbeth is horrified by the idea but his thoughts of going after his destiny still remain. Another example of Macbeth’s early thoughts of treachery occurs when Duncan formally names his son Malcom as his successor. “Stars, hide your fires; / Let not light see my black and deep desires / The eye wink at the hand! yet let that be, /” (I, iv, 57-5). Macbeth is vexed at the Duncan’s choice of successor and wishes to overleap the situation with murder. No one helps Macbeth’s thoughts to prepare for the murder of Duncan. It is Macbeth and Macbeth only who is responsible for his own ambitions. Macbeth is eager to become king and wishes to reach his goal by any means, even if this means letting himself be influenced by others. Macbeth is responsible for putting power into the hands of Lady Macbeth and letting her influence him. Lady Macbeth tries to persuade Macbeth to kill Duncan but it is Macbeth who listens to her demands. “This night’s great business into my dispatch; / Which shall to all our nights and days to come / Give solely sovereign sway and masterdom” (I, v, 75-77). Macbeth could have told his Lady to stop her plans. Instead, he lets himself be influenced. Macbeth puts power into the hands of Lady Macbeth by letting her arrange Duncan’s murder. “Will it not be received, / When we have mark’d with blood those sleepy two / Of his own chamber, and used their very daggers, / That they have done’t?” (I, vii, 8-85). Macbeth agrees with the plan, determined to win the throne. If Macbeth truly did not want to commit evil, he could have refused his Lady’s arrangements. Instead, Macbeth accepts the plans and goes further by asking Lady Macbeth to “mock the time with fairest show” (I, vii, 1). Although sometimes Macbeth wants the murder of Duncan, other times his thoughts show the contrary. Macbeth recognizes the thoughts of killing Ducan are immoral. Macbeth’s is conscious that is thoughts are evil, yet he does nothing to correct the situation. “My thought, whose murder yet is but fantastical, / Shakes so my single state of man that function / Is smother’d in surmise; and nothing is / But what is not” (I, iii, 14-15). If Macbeth were mentally deranged he would not be responsible for the outcome of his actions. However, Macbeth shows that he has a conscience and that he can differentiate good from evil. In privacy, Macbeth re-thinks his plans to kill Duncan. Macbeth, reveals that he knows what he is about to do is immoral, and that justice will be repay him with evil. “We still have judgment here; that we but teach Bloody instructions, which being taught return To plague the inventor this even-handed justice Commends the ingredients of our poison’d chalice To our own lips. He’s here in double trust First, as I am his kinsman and his subject, Strong both against the deed then, as his host, Who should against his murderer shut the door, Not bear the knife myself. Besides, this Duncan Hath borne his faculties so meek, hath been So clear in his great office, that his virtues Will plead like angel, trumpet-tongued, against The deep damnation of his taking off;” (I, vii, 8-0). Macbeth lists several reasons for going against the plan to kill Duncan. Therefore, Macbeth has time to think over his intentions and to take direct action. Macbeth is fully aware of the consequences of his actions and is thereby liable to be blamed for his fate. Spurred on by is own ambition Macbeth is responsible for his destructive fate. Through his thoughts, actions, and decisions Macbeth demonstrates his overwhelming guilt. Macbeth’s desire to become king drives him to introduce plans for Ducan’s murder. Macbeth puts power into the hands of Lady Macbeth by sending her the letter that informs her of the prophecies. Lastly, Macbeth acknowledges his guilt in several places in the story. Macbeth is aware that his thoughts are corrupt and he knows that justice will somehow punish him. However, even with all his power, Macbeth makes no attempt to reverse the situation and is thereby responsible for his tragic fate.

Even though I went to sleep in my own bed, I didnt awaken there. Instead, I found myself inside a tube with only a tiny window to the outside world. So lets go back. On Nov. 1, 001, I was an apparently healthy 50-year-old man who had worked as a professional journalist for mos ...

Fatalistic Coincidences

Thomas Hardy uses fate as an underlying theme in his work Tess of the DUrbervilles. Fate, or the concept of fatalism is the belief that for all actions or events that take place there is some controlling force that has power and superiority over everything. Fate is a primitive force that exists independently of human will or control. In Tess of the D’Urbervilles Hardy exhibits this concept in Tess, the immaculate young protagonist, who is constantly put into precarious situations that continuously question the inevitable command of fate on ones life.

Throughout the novel the concept of fatalism is witnessed through coincidental events that create testing situations for the young Tess. Throughout the book the coincidental events that did not take place result in outcomes that would have been avoided if only a few more moments were added or something was done slightly differently. An example of this is seen in the early stages of the book when Angel and his two brothers come to the town were Tess and her friends are dancing on the green. Angel, intrigued by the activity, chooses to dance, but he does not choose Tess, in fact he does not even notice her. Rather he “took almost the first that came to hand,” this being only coincidental and by chance. If he had only to chosen Tess then, the two would have found one another at that point rather than later in the novel, thus avoiding their dreadful end. Hardy introduces Angel in this way so that later on in the book when Angel emerges again as Tess’s husband, after the events involving Alec D’Urberville and Tess occur, it is apparent what could have been avoided if only the two had found each other that first day on the village green.

Coincidence did not bring Tess and Angel together that day and life for the young Tess went on. When Tess was sent away to live with her newly discovered relative, she was introduced to Alec D’Urberville, the son of Mrs. D’Urberville, the widow. Soon after their introduction Alec seduced the young Tess, forcing himself upon her while the two stayed in the woods for a short time. After only a short time Tess was not able to put up with the sorrows brought forth by Alec and was forced to return to her family. However, Tess was not received well by the people. In fact, she was seen as “sinner” by many of the town folk. Had Tess not been sent to the dUrberville home, she would not have met Alec nor would she have bore his child out of wedlock and her life would have been completely different.

Custom Essays on tess paper

While working at the local dairy in her birthplace of Marlott, Tess is finally introduced to Angel, a fellow employee at the dairy. The two fall in love but Tess is rather hesitant to become too involved due to her shady past. After many weeks spent together, Tess accepted the engagement to Angel, but before the two were to be married Tess wanted to inform Angel of her past. She wanted to “Declare the past to him by word of mouth she could not, but there was another way.” She decided to write him a letter and slip it under his door. Unfortunately Angel never received the letter and was never informed if Tess’s history. This small event was of such fatalistic gravity that ultimately led to a tragic end for Tess. Due to the fact that Angel never received the letter, Tess was not able to tell him until after they were married. When Angel found out, he was devastated and the marriage was left at a halt at his discretion.

After Tess and Angel had split apart, Angel left for Brazil. After he was gone for nearly a year, Tess’s father became very sick and eventually died. Soon after the death of her father, Tess became involved with Alec again primarily to provide her family a home and a sound financial foundation. It was only a short time after the marriage of Tess and Alec that Angel returned from Brazil. Tess being torn by the situation took action by killing Alec and pronouncing her true love to Angel. Tess, however, was executed just days after she killed Alec. The coincidence of Tesss father dying at just the right moment for Alec to marry her and Angel returning only a little after was a fate by pure coincidence. Once again coincidence and plain chance play fundamental roles in Tess’s fate and caused her to determine her own fate by killing Alec.

For Tess coincidental acts of fate often forced her to deal with unfortunate circumstances. It could be said that Tess was fatalistically prone to put herself into fatalistic situations that result in severe repercussions over time. When Tess killed Alec, she put fate into her own hands and for once she was in control of something. Shortly after she killed Alec she, herself was hung for her retaliation, which demonstrates the concealed power of fate always having the upper hand.

macbeth

This is the hardest letter that I have ever written. For once in my life my head is so full of things I can¡¯t think straight. I feel like how you used to be WEAK. I hate it I want to be strong but at the moment I am feeling strangely vulnerable.

I¡¯m alone without you. I feel like you don¡¯t need me anymore. I¡¯m useless to you. You didn¡¯t need me when you went to the witches about Lady Macduff and you didn¡¯t need me to plot Banquo¡¯s death. I said that You must leave this but you didn¡¯t take any notice. I still love you and I hate you but I still love you. I¡¯m not sure what I feel right now I am all confused.

Custom Essays on macbeth

I hated you when in the feast with all our guests and friends. Your mind pulled tricks on you and you claimed to see your dead friend. I was ashamed and embarrassed. I made excuses to the guest¡¯s about your behaviour but they wouldn¡¯t accept. You embarrassed me in front of everyone. I had to sort you out. I told you, You have displaced the mirth, broke the good meeting with most admired disorder. You deserved my wrath because you ruined the feast and nearly confessed to our sins.

I love you still because I still remember the good times when we were close and our heads were full of ambition and dreams of being king and queen. I remember the joy I had when I received your letter about the prophecies made about you becoming king. I asked the spirits to unsex me so my femine weakness would not spoil our ambition because I knew what had to be done.

I had no doubt in my mind when I planned Duncan¡¯s death after reading the letter. I knew that you would back away from this so I had to push you and give you courage such as when I told you to leave the rest to me without this you would have been worried about the consequences and probably would have not done it.

I bullied you to do want I wanted and I constantly insulted your masculinity and questioned your bravery to boost your courage as well. Now as a result my mind is full of things that I cannot explain. Images are sounds our circling in my head. I feel my feminine weakness is coming back. I am confused. I feel that I have written this letter again and again in a dream that I can¡¯t quite remember.

My life is ending. I cannot live with this confusion and sin. I tried to be brave and strong and I kept my pain inside me. It is like you and me have swapped. You were weak and I was strong. Now I think that I am weak and you have gained strength through my control of you. I really need you to give me strength. I want to be strong and in control. I have always liked it that way and now I feel that I can never have it again.

So what¡¯s the point of me living? I am useless. My ambition has gone. I still love you deeply so if I end my life I give you life because I am a holding you back. Our relationship is long gone and in my present state I could easily slip up and then some one will find the truth about the murders. I will miss you and I will miss being Queen. I still don¡¯t know now if I regret the murders all not. I am not sure about anything but I am certain what I should do now. So goodbye my love maybe I will see you again or maybe I will never see you whatever the outcome I will miss you.

Goodbye,

Yours lovingly

Lady Macbeth

At its most basic, architecture is the art of organizing space. The process unfolds, gradually impacting more and more elements of a built environment interiors, landscape, engineering, planning, graphics. Because good design does not occur in a vacuum. It is created in response to the specific needs of the client and to the opportunities presented by the site. It is out of these driving forces that our interior spaces, our buildings, our communities blossom and grow. My teacher once said You begin with the design of a chair, which is grouped to form a room. Grouping rooms forms a house or building, which are planned a neighbourhoods. When you group the neighbourhoods, you have formed the community. With this organic approach to design, there are no set solutions, no single style or signature. We are problem-solvers, designing environments to help our clients meet their objectives. And yet we are also artists, recognizing that our designs affect the quality of peoples lives, and that the spaces we create must go beyond pure fiction. How well a building fulfills its human purpose is the standard by which we judge whether that building has meaning. If it does not ease the spirit as well as the task, if it does not stir the imagination as well as contribute to the bottom line, then it is not a significant success. We have a remarkable opportunity to make a difference in peoples lives. Through humanistic design and thoughtful site planning, and by encouraging an awareness of our impact on the global ecosystem, we can help make the world a better place to live.

By definition stream of consciousness is the capturing of a character or author’s internal thought process. Virginia Woolf creates an interesting contrast within the characters using stream of consciousness.

Clarissa’s inner thoughts are shown using a contrast between the lack of attraction for her husband Richard Dalloway, her lesbian feelings toward Sally Seton, and the fear of loosing her husband who has become her social stepping stone. This contrast is a usage of stream of consciousness. Clarissa’s character reveals to us early in the book her lack of attraction to her husband. “Lovely in her girlhood, suddenly there came a moment for example on the river beneath the woods at Clieveden when, through some contraction of this cold spirit, she had failed him.” (1) The “cold spirit” that she talks about could be her sexuality. In saying this, her attraction to women and her lack of understanding why she is this way, is a good explanation of Clarissa’s character. In feeling this way Clarissa feels that her lack of attraction is a direct effect of her failed emotional relationship with her husband. Another usage of stream of consciousness with Clarissa’s character is that she feels that after the birth of their child she has lost her sexual relationship and attraction for her husband. “she could not dispel a virginity preserved through childbirth which clung to her like a sheet.” (1) Clarissa makes known her true sexuality speaking of her previous relationship with Sally Seton. “But this question of love, this falling in love with women Had not that, after all, been love?” () The use of stream of consciousness with such a complex character as Clarissa helps explain her internal thoughts.

Throughout the novel Woolf uses heterosexual and homosexual love triangles existing simultaneously with a multiplicity of characters in various triangles. The use of these triangles combined with the stream of consciousness shows that it may not be the object in the triangle that is truly desired, but the desire of the subject for what the other wants. This becomes apparent within the character of Peter Walsh who wants Clarissa not because she makes him happy, but because of his jealousy of Richard Dalloway. This jealousy is first shown in the book at their first meeting of the book. “She will marry that man, he said to himself. He didn’t even know his name.”(61) This jealousy only does one thing for Peter, and that is intensifying his feelings for Clarissa. Her rejection of him and his desire maintains this triangle and even furthers Peter’s feelings of jealousy and rejection. Another extension of this triangle is Daisy. Daisy is another object of Peter’s affection. Instead of Peter directing his emotions toward one woman he blurs the two relationships and is in turn overwhelmed with jealousy about both Clarissa and Daisy. “ It was jealousy that was at the bottom of it jealousy which survives every other passion of mankind, Peter Walsh thought, holding his pocket-knife at arm’s length.” (80) The character of Peter’s desire may very well not even be true desire for Clarissa or Daisy, but just the desire of something he could never fulfill.

In closing I would just like to bring forth that stream of consciousness is a very deep and engaging concept. There are no boundaries with this literary device. The characters are suspect and subject to the imagination of the reader/author. The use of stream of consciousness in this book helps bring fourth the ultimate meaning behind its characters and the total concept of the story

1.) Write your definition of revolution. Then use this definition to argue that the Civil War did or did not produce a revolution in the political, economic, and social life of the United States.

A “revolution” can be described as a transformation from old age to a more modern and progressive one. Without a doubt the Civil War produced revolutionary changes in political, economical, and social life of the people of the US. The original federal banking system was specie based and wasn’t very prevalent or popular. When Congress passed the Legal Tender Act in 186, the government issued $150 million in government notes known as America’s original “greenbacks”. The new greenbacks along with the National Bank Act of 186 signified the first steps toward a standardized national currency. The limited extent of Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation did substantiate a “revolution” which showed a tendency to prefer an existing and traditional situation to big change. Although it didn’t abolish slavery completely, it did mark a turning point in history as it cleared the path for “radical change”, and became as great a document of freedom as the Constitution for the blacks. It did, however, spark much controversy amongst not only the southerners but some northerners who weren’t seeking civil war to be a war solely against slavery just yet! The Civil War changed the ways of waging war as the conflict introduced tactics and weapons that were used widely during wars of the late 1800’s and 100’s. Civil War soldiers were the first to fight under a unified command, to battle from trenches, and to wage a major cordon offense. The war also introduced ironclad ships, mines, and submarines. Railroads and telegraphy were used for the first time in warfare as well. The Northern victory established that no state had the right or power to end the Union. The Civil War also confirmed the U.S. as an industrial nation. Furthermore, the outcome of the war paved the way for the rise of the US as a major global power as it brought America to the vanguard of world politics and issues in the 0th century.

.) Do you think President Lincoln was justified in his violations of ordinary civil liberties during the Civil War? Why or why not?

Lincoln had to do what he had to do in order to preserve the Union. As he boldly put it, “If I could save the Union without freeing any slave, I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves, I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone, I would also do that.” His suspension of the writ of Habeas Corpus (which caused bitter criticism), the Confiscation Acts (which allowed the seizing of property and slaves or rebelling southerners), and the conscription laws (passed in 186 for the south and 186 for the north called for able white men to fight for their side) were amongst some of the civil liberties he had to sacrifice for the stake of the nation. The draft worked poorly and was extremely unpopular in many areas of both North and especially in the South. He was certainly justified in his violations mainly because of his effort and strong will to preserve the Union. Lincoln didn’t want the US to be the laughing stock of the world and his strong dedication to fight for the Union and America may have cost civil liberties, but it got the job done.

Custom writing service can write essays on Potential Questions on The Civil War

.) The Civil War began in 1861. Why was it 186 before Lincoln committed the Union to the emancipation of slaves?

Lincoln knew that if he fought the war only to free the slaves that the would have a very hard time running the war because of the feelings of many in the North. He feared that if he issued it at the wrong moment not only would it cause problems in his cabinet, but also with the elected officials of several states as well as with his army. Other added worries were the border states like Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri, which had strong southern pro-slavery feelings and if he made slavery the reason for the war those states could very well have formally sided with the Confederacy. He was a master politician had to wait until the proper time to take action. After the influential and important Union victory at Antietam, Lincoln decided the time was right! His issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation called slaves in rebelling states to be given full freedom. It did, however, add another objective to the list on the fight between the Rebels and the Yankees.

4.) What political factors effected Lincolns approach to the goals and conduct of the war? Why was he a more successful political leader than Jefferson Davis?

Both presidents had major political problems to deal with during the war. The main problem that Lincoln had especially as the war dragged on were the Peace Democrats, and the Radical Republicans. Lincoln also had problems with the Congress who had formed a committee that would oversee the way the war was run, and who would look over almost every decision made by Lincoln and also hold hearings on the action the military officers took during the war. Another legal predicament for Lincoln was the suspension of the writ of Habeas Corpus which curbed rioting and resistance against the war effort. As much trouble as Lincoln had, Jefferson Davis had an even harder time with his political rivals. The Confederacy was formed on the idea of the states being more important that the whole federal government. Davis quickly learned that the main government had to control certain things which many of the state governors did not agree with. The south had a difficult time obtaining the supplies needed to wage war and he tried to get the different states to supply the main army (which was hard in itself already). Many of the states refused to do this and believed that they were their men from their state so they only wanted to supply their men and not the Confederate Armies. Davis definitely had the harder time. He was a “rigid” man who believed in managing things little at a time. Some thought him to be cold and unfeeling which was not completely true but his personality was one of rigidness which made him hard to approach. Lincoln on the other hand had a capability in dealing with people. He was a sharp and able man who was very approachable and used humor a great deal to put people at ease. He knew how to handle people and get the most out of them.

5.) At the outset of the Civil War, the South confidently anticipated that King Cotton would guarantee it

European intervention. Why didnt this intervention materialize?

At the time just prior to the Civil War and during the first part of the war the south wanted to use its cotton as a tool to help bring countries like England and France into the war onto the side of the Confederacy. To do this they held back the exportation of cotton to foreign countries. The south hoped that the foreign countries would need the cotton so much that they would aid the south. Unfortunately for the south their were bumper crops of cotton in countries such as Egypt and India so the pressure on the foreign countries was not so great as to force those countries to give in and aid the south. The Union also intensified obstruction which controlled southern exports. Furthermore, the Emancipation Proclamation was used by Lincoln to keep other nations from helping the south during the Civil War, because he wanted to show the outside world that this war was being fought over slavery by people who wanted nothing more that to retain this horrid institution. It had the desired effect on foreign nations that were considering joining the war on the side of the Confederacy. Countries such as England and France did not wish to be identified with a government which supported this abhorrent practice and they did not join the Confederacy in its fight. So, because of this the Confederacys ploy to use cotton as a weapon failed to materialize.

6.) What were the key military and political turning points of the Civil War and why did the South hold onto hopes of achieving its goals as late as 1864 and even early 1865?

There were several key military turning points in the war and not all historians agree as to what they were and in what order to place them. I believe the main ones were the battle of Gettysburg which pushed the Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee back into Virginia, the Union victory at Vicksburg one day after the Union victory at Gettysburg, the elevation of Union General Ulysses S. Grant to the rank of Lt. General and command of all Union forces and finally the Atlanta Campaign of Union General William Sherman and his subsequent March to the Sea through Georgia. Another important key point was the Battle of Antietam which although McClellan failed to dismantle Lee’s army but he did manage to halt Lee’s first invasion on northern soil. The key political points were the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation by Lincoln which not only made the issue of slavery a reason for the north to fight the war but it also stopped foreign nations such as England and France from entering the war on the side of the Confederacy. The south believed they could still win the war because of their past effectiveness against the Union forces. It was not until 1864 when Grant took command that the south began fighting a general who knew how to win and that was to make it a war of abrasion. They also had great faith in their main general Robert E. Lee. Other points were the hopes of a negotiated peace especially if Lincoln lost the 1864 election which he was expected to lose, and they clinged to the hope that they could get England and France to enter the war on their side.

7.) Explain why General Sherman conducted his devastating march to the Sea. Explain in what ways this was like conducting modern total war”.

General Ulysses S. Grant had taken command of all the Union Armies and it was his plan for him to march toward the Confederate capitol of Richmond, Virginia while General Sherman moved into the deep South. He then led his Army of Tennessee and led it on a march to Atlanta, through Georgia, and up the East Coast. Notorious throughout the South to this day, General Sherman brought the South “to its knees” by ordering large-scale destruction. So, the importance of Shermans March to the Sea was to first destroy the Souths compliance and ability to continue the war, capture an important sea port, and finally to act like a vice with General Grant and trap one of the last strong Confederate Armies between them. Sherman was considered the first general to utilize what would be deemed total war meaning that he would not only target the military but civilian property as well to take out the will of the enemy to fight. The resources of the opposing sides were completely used.

8.) Explain the economic, diplomatic and military results of the Union victory and Confederate defeat in the Civil War.

The Civil War brought booming prosperity to the North. Government purchases for military needs stimulated manufacturing and agriculture. The production of coal, iron and steel, weapons, shoes, and woolen clothing increased greatly. Farmers vastly expanded their production of wheat, wool, and other products. Exports to Europe of beef, corn, pork, and wheat doubled. Factories and farms made the first widespread use of labor-saving machines, such as the sewing machine and the reaper. The north also established the national banking system, standard currency. As in the North, manufacturing and agriculture in the South were adapted to the needs of war. Cotton cultivation dropped harshly, while food production was greatly increased. The South thus tried to adjust to meet wartime needs, but its economy became strained almost to the breaking point. The attempt to finance the war by taxation and borrowing from the people was unsuccessful. During the Civil War, the South tried to bring political power under the control of a single authority. But it was not victorious. Also, southerners had long opposed a strong central government. There was also opposition to the war and Lincolns policies came chiefly from the Democratic Party, especially from a group known as the Peace Democrats, who wanted the war stopped. Republicans considered the Peace Democrats disloyal and deceitful and called them Copperheads. The Lincoln Administration was also criticized by Radical Republicans. They wanted the government to move more quickly to abolish slavery and to make sweeping changes in the Southern way of life. The Civil war inflicted many casualties as well. About 60,000 soldiers died during the Civil War. The Union lost about 60,000 troops, and the Confederacy about 60,000. More than half the deaths were caused by disease. About a third of all Southern soldiers died in the war, compared with about a sixth of all Northern soldiers. As you can see, the Union was much better off than the Union. It is clearly understandable why the Union won the Civil War.

The College Problem

Ambrose College is a college in Camford. Consider what, if any, liabilities in tort will arise in the following situations

(a) Ambrose College’s most famous feature is a clock tower which forms part of the college library. Dave was hired to renovate the clock on the clock tower as it had fallen into disrepair. Theo, one of Ambrose College’s students, attempted one night to climb the scaffolding which Dave had placed around the clock tower. Having reached the top of the scaffolding, he slipped on some oil which had been spilled by Dave that evening just before he knocked off work for the day. Dave had planned to clean up the oil the next day as soon as he came in for work. Theo fell off the scaffolding and broke both his legs.

(b) Randy, an unemployed resident of Camford, sneaked into Ambrose College late at night to spend the night with his girlfriend, Yolanda, who was a student at Ambrose. Randy knew that the College regulations prohibited anyone but Yolanda from spending the night in her room. The light on the staircase leading up to Yolanda’s room was broken and the College authorities had taken no steps to mend it. In the early hours of the morning, Gordon (another student at Ambrose who was unaware of Randy’s presence in the College) set off the College fire alarm for a joke. Awoken by the fire alarm and aware that when a fire alarm went off, the Ambrose College porters did room-to-room checks to see that they had been vacated Yolanda told Randy to get out of the College as quickly as possible so that his presence in the College wouldn’t be detected. Randy ran down the stairs leading to Yolanda’s room but due to the lack of lighting, he lost his footing and fell down the stairs, breaking an arm. Despite the fact that he was in obvious pain, the porters refused to summon an ambulance for Randy until he told them what he was doing in the College. He eventually lied and said that he had been spending the night with Sally, an enemy of Yolanda’s who lived on the same staircase. Sally was fined £500 for infringing the College regulations.

Model answer

Taking each possible claimant in turn

(a)

Theo

Claim against Dave

Theo will want to bring a claim in negligence against Dave under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 184. (No claim can be brought under the 157 Act as Theo was not a ‘visitor’ when he went onto the scaffolding.)

It is pretty clear that Dave owed Theo a duty under the 184 Act to take reasonable steps to clear up the oil spill. Dave ‘occupied’ the scaffolding (he was in effective control of the scaffolding). He knew of the existence of the oil spill and the risk it posed to people coming onto the scaffolding; he knew that a trespasser coming onto the scaffolding was likely to come into the vicinity of the oil spill; and the risk created by the oil spill was one which Dave could reasonably have been expected to offer trespassers some protection against.

But did Dave breach the duty he owed Theo to take reasonable steps to clear up the oil spill? He did nothing to clear the oil spill up the night Theo went climbing up the scaffolding but that might have been a reasonable thing to do if the risk that a trespasser would attempt to scale the scaffolding was exceedingly small and the time and trouble that would have been involved in cleaning the oil spill up that night rather than the day after was very large. We would need more information on these matters before we could judge whether Dave was negligent in relation to Theo when he failed to clean up the oil spill before knocking off work for the night.

If Dave was negligent in not cleaning up the oil spill immediately then Theo will be able to sue Dave in negligence for damages to compensate him for his broken legs. However, the damages will be reduced to take account of Dave’s contributory negligence in climbing up the scaffolding in the first place.

Claim against the College

It is doubtful whether Theo could bring a claim against the college for compensation for his broken legs. The college was not responsible either for the presence of the oil spill at the top of the scaffolding or for the failure to clean it up before Theo climbed to the top of the scaffolding.

(b)

Randy

Claim against the College

Randy may want to bring a claim in negligence against the college under the Occupiers’ Liability Act 184. He will claim that the college owed him a duty under the 184 Act to take reasonable steps to mend the broken light on Yolanda’s staircase and that his leg was broken because the college breached this duty.

It seems strongly arguable that the college did owe Randy the duty of care contended for. It clearly ‘occupied’ the college at the time Randy was on the premises. It knew that there was a risk that someone using Yolanda’s staircase would be killed or injured by virtue of the fact that the staircase was unlit at night. It must have known that a trespasser such as Randy might use Yolanda’s staircase at night and might as a result be killed or injured because it was unlit at night. And this danger was something which the college could reasonably have been expected to do something about. Given all this, it is strongly arguable that the college owed Randy a duty to take reasonable steps to mend the broken light on Yolanda’s staircase. On the other hand, section 1(6) of the Act provides that ‘No duty is owed by virtue of this section to any person in respect of risks willingly accepted by him’. If Randy was aware when he went to spend the night at Yolanda’s that the light on her staircase was defective, then it could be argued that he willingly took the risk that he might be killed or injured if he had to use her staircase at night. Then again, it could be argued that even if Randy knew that the light on Yolanda’s staircase was defective, he could hardly have supposed that he would have to use the staircase at night when it would be dark and, given this, he did not ‘willingly accept’ the risk that he would be killed or injured in using Yolanda’s staircase.

If the college did owe Randy a duty to take reasonable steps to mend the broken light on Yolanda’s staircase, it seems clear that they breached this duty (they seem to have had ample opportunity to mend the light which they did not take) and that Randy broke his leg as a result of that breach. So if the college did owe Randy the duty of care contended for, Randy should be able to sue the college for damages to compensate him for his broken leg.

Claim against Gordon

It is unlikely that Randy will be able to sue Gordon for damages to compensate him for his broken leg whether he brings his claim in negligence or under the tort in Wilkinson v. Downton.

It is submitted that Gordon did not commit the tort in Wilkinson v. Downton in relation to Randy when he set the fire alarm off. For one thing, Gordon did not know that it was very likely that Randy would suffer some kind of injury if he set off the fire alarm. Moreover, it seems that Gordon’s act of setting off fire alarm would have to be ‘directed at’ Randy for Gordon to have committed the tort in Wilkinson v. Downton in relation to Randy in setting the fire alarm off and this again is not made out.

Again it is submitted that Gordon did not commit the tort of negligence in relation to Randy by setting off the fire alarm; Gordon did not owe Randy a duty not to switch the fire alarm on because it wasn’t reasonably foreseeable that someone like Randy might be injured if the fire alarm were turned on.

Claim against the porters

Randy may want to sue the porters for damages to compensate him for the fact that porters refused to call him an ambulance immediately with the result that the pain and suffering experienced by him as a result of his having his leg broken was prolonged unnecessarily. However, it is difficult to see how Randy could make out such a claim.

If Randy sued the porters in negligence, they would be able to meet his claim on the ground that they did not owe him a duty to take reasonable steps to call him an ambulance. The common law does not require strangers to take steps to help those in difficulty absent ‘special circumstances’ and there were no ‘special circumstances’ here. The porters were not responsible for the fact that Randy’s leg was broken and they did not on the facts as presented discourage anyone else from calling him an ambulance. They did not ‘assume a responsibility’ to Randy or take on the job of treating him.

Randy will face similar difficulties if he attempts to sue the porters on the ground that they committed the tort in Wilkinson v. Downton in failing to call him an ambulance. It is doubtful whether that tort extends to the case where A omits to do something for B, knowing that his omission is very likely to result in B suffering some kind of injury or distress. Otherwise the tort would cover the case where A deliberately fails to shout out a warning to B as B is about to A’s knowledge to walk over a cliff.

Sally

There is little doubt that Sally will be able to sue Randy for damages to compensate her for the £500 she paid out to the college as a result of Randy’s allegations. Randy committed the tort of malicious falsehood in relation to Sally when he told the porters that he had spent the night with her. The tort is committed when A maliciously makes a false statement to B that refers to C and C suffers loss as a result. All these requirements are made out here. Randy’s statement obviously referred to Sally; it was false; Sally suffered loss as a result of that statement being made; and Randy acted maliciously in making that statement in that he knew that it was not true when he made out (it does not matter that he made the statement simply to get himself out of a tough spot the requirement of maliciousness is satisfied on proof that the statement was made with knowledge that it was untrue). As Randy committed the tort of malicious falsehood in relation to Sally in making his statement to the porters, Sally will be entitled to sue Randy for compensation in respect of the loss that his statement caused her to suffer.

Comment on the model answer

Assuming that ‘little’ torts such as the tort in Wilkinson v. Downton and malicious falsehood are on your syllabus at your university (as they should be), it is worthwhile taking a little time to master them. They are not too hard to grasp and they can crop up in a wide variety of problem questions such as the one above. It would be a shame to lose marks because you failed to consider whether a particular ‘little’ tort was committed in a given problem question when, with half an hour’s effort before the exam, you would have been able to see quite easily whether or not that tort was committed.

Living together before marriage increased by 45% between 170 and 10. In recent years, approximately 60 % of people getting married have lived together . But only about 5 % of people living together end up getting married. Therefore at least some people learn things about relationship that helps them avoid bad relationship.

Testing the relationship before tying the knot really ensure a better marriage in the long run. Now, I’d like to concentrate on advantages of cohabitation.

Living together before marriage is a good way for people to find out whether they would be compatible marriage partners. Knowing the partner is not the same as living with him or her. Dating just from time to time, partners are on their best behaviour, they avoid confrontation because they are eager to have someone love them and insecure in the temporary relationship. Moreover, this super nice behaviour may partly account for the radical changes in behaviour, personality and attitudes (almost always for worse) that sometimes occurs shortly after marriage.

Shacking up with somebody is a total different experience. People can get the full picture about who they are. If both partners are not ready yet for marriage but want a steady partner, living together offers obvious advantages. It can be real life learning experience of loving and adjusting on equal terms with another person. It is just one of many possible “tests” for a potential partner. The best predictor of good marriage is a long, relatively smooth relationship, in which wide variety of problems and successes are experienced. Living together measures the couple’s strengths and weaknesses in such areas as; communication, personality, expectations, leisure activities, conflict resolutions, financial management, parenting etc… Cohabitation provides a great opportunity for couples to get to know each other better, learn communication, decision-making, prepare for marriage and prevent future problems.

Order Custom advantages of living together before marriage paper

Living together helps people distinguish between being “in love” and being in a good relationship. We have to remember that love brings out the best and something worse as well. Cohabitating partners learned that though they love each other very much, there are times when they can’t stand each other. The key to any relationship is compromise and communication.

Living together is the only way to get to know the other person. It is important to know how the other person handles their finances, how they deal with crisis, how messy are they? You truly cannot get a really feel for that unless you are with that person for longer than a date or weekend together.

In addition, living together give partners the full picture of the person they live with. Give the picture of many possible future situations such as educational and career plans of both, having and caring for children by both, family relationship, religious matter, life-style, social lives, division of labour etc…

Many of media reports about study exaggerate the link between cohabitation and divorce. The study found a small differences (%) in the rate of divorce. But actually the reports did not draw the conclusion that living together before marriage was the cause of the relationship ending. According to sociologist William Moster it may not be the experience of cohabiting but the people who live together before marriage have different values than couples who do not.

Maybe more people living together before marriage would reduce the divorce rate. Cohabitation is much more accepted by this generation. I believe that our education generation is trying not to make the mistakes of previous generations of marrying someone they hardly know.

Anyway we have to remember that any relationships are up to a little bit of luck, lots efforts, individual circumstances and compatibility.

In conclusion I’d like to say

A RELATIONSHIP IS LIKE A DANCE; TO STAY CLOSE WITHOUT STEPPING ON EACH OTHER’S TOES TAKES PRACTICE.

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a group of well brought up British boys, get stranded on a deserted island. This bokk shows that even the most civil people are shown to become hateful towards the people who try to keep order, create chaos and act savagely. In fact, by comparing Jack and Ralphs leadership styles, level of violence, and how they have changed, it becomes evidently clear that without order and direction we are no better off then the animals.

From the beginning of the book Jack and Ralphs leadership styles were very different. Jacks first instinct told him that they needed to hunt. ““The choir belongs to you, of course.”“They could be an army- “Or hunters-”(5). Before Jack even knows weather or not there was anything to hunt, Jack wants to give his choir to Ralph so they could be hunters. Jack doesn’t care what he might be

hunting and killing, he just wants to kill something. Jack has a more vulgare leadership style.

Unlike Jack Ralphs first instinct was to find away to be rescued and get off the island. “ “We can

doesn’t want to stay on the island and hunt, he wants to get off and go home. Jack and Ralphs

leadership styles are completely different right from the beginning. Jack is wanting to act more

savagely and Ralph is using a little more logic.

Later, Jacks level of violence sky rockets, and Jack is completely transformed into a

savage. “He heard a curious trickling sound and then a louder crepitation as if someone were

unwrapping great sheets of cellophane. A stick snapped and he stifled a cough. Smoke was

seeping through the branches in white and yellow wisps, the patch of blue sky over head turned

to the colour of a storm cloud, and then the smoke billowed round him.” Jack tried to smoke

Ralph out of the thicket which he had crawled into to avoid being killed by Jack and his tribe.

Jacks plan caused the entire island to go up in flames. Jack caught the hole island on fire to kill

Ralph. Ralph does break and acts violently in the book. Jack participates in the murder of Simon.

““Piggy”.”

“Uh?”

“That was Simon.”

“You said that before.”

“Piggy.”

“Uh?”

“That was murder.”

“You stop it! What good are you doing talking like that?” [Piggy] jumped to his feet and stood

over Ralph.

“It was dark. There was that- that bloody dance. There was lightning and rain. We was scared!”

“I wasn’t scared,”Ralph said slowly, “I was- I don’t know what I was” (17-17)

The savage came out of Ralph and unlike Jack Ralph had realized what was happening to them.

He faced the reality of them all turning into savages because they have no rules, they have no

order and no direction to tell them what is right and what is wrong.

Finally, by the end of the novel Jack and Ralph show how much they have changed. Jack

has changed from a young British boy who was respected by his choir. He had slightly violent

tendances like stabbing the tree but was still to civil to kill a pig. ““[I hesitated because] I was

choosing a place, I was just waiting for a moment to decide where to stab him.”” Jack was still to

civil in the beginning of the book to kill the pig without any emotion or thought. Then when he

tells the tribe he becomes upset and stabbed the tree trunk aggressively.

““We saw-”

“Squealing-”

“It broke away-”

“Before I could kill it-but-next time!”

Ralph slammed his knife into a trunk and looked around challengingly””(6).

Jack became angry when he didn’t succeed in killing the pig and showed a more violent side. But

by the end of the novel Jack was completely transformed into a savage who was willing to kill

Ralph just because he disliked him. ““[Jack and his tribe] hate you, Ralph. They’re going to hunt

you tomorrow ”(08). The twins Samneric warn Ralph that Jack is planning to hunt him like he’s

a pig. Unlike jack Ralph has changed for the better. Ralph matured throughout the novel. In the

beginning Ralph was carefree and lived in a fantasy world. ““[My dad’s] a commander in the

navy. When he gets leave he’ll come and rescue us”

“When will your father rescue us?”

“Soon as he can.”

“How does he know we’re here?” Because, thought Ralph because, because”(14). Ralph was a

real optimist and hoped for the best and didn’t base anything on facts. He thought everything

would work out fine. As the novel progressed Ralph matured and started using logic. Ralph

shows his maturity when he wants to clean up to go talk to Jack about Piggys stolen glass.

““He’ll be painted.”

“Well we wont be painted, because we aren’t savages””(11). Ralph does not want to be painted

because he wants to remind Jack that they are not savages. Without order and direction Jack

became savage and while Ralph remained civil he was disliked by the boys for trying to keep

order on the island.

In conclusion, a group of well brought up British boys lost all to most of there sense of

right and wrong with out having order and direction, and for the ones who still tried to keep order

and direction in there lives were outcast by the boys who became savage like. Without order and

direction the boys in this novel changed into animals.

Why are we always planning for tomorrow?

Can’t we just live in the present?

Why is it we work for the next day, instead of making today last?

The future is for us to create, that’s for sure.

Custom writing service can write essays on tomorrow

But wouldn’t it be nicer if we could just sit back?

Ever wondered what it would be like to run through that green meadow? Or swim in the river just because?

Have you ever just driven or walked, with no destination in mind and been surprised at the journey’s end?

We shouldn’t be restricted by the tradition of planning every detail of our lives.

Being spontaneous shouldn’t be looked as being done by only the rebels among us.

Let’s forget about tomorrow because it will never come. Live in the present or nothing will be done.

Have you ever visited that lonely old man in the nursing home?

He’s told you all the stories of those times long ago.

But aren’t we all saddened even more when he starts to cry, and he tells you all the things that he wishes he had tried.

But now that he is old, and he’s bones have become frail, you know that he has no time left and you wish that you could give him one last wish.

Don’t turn into that lonely man.

Remember him when you next refuse that date. Or the next time that you wish for something, just make it come true.

Grasp today with both hands and remember one simple rule

Carpe diem, seize the day, and leave tomorrow for when it arrives.

In Thucydides’ History of the Pelopennesian war, there is a chapter entitled The Melian Debate. The Melian Debate is a debate between Athens and Melos, about whether the Melians will surrender to Athens, or if they will go to war with Athens. The Melian argument is that Athens is not doing what is just for Melos. Justice means to do what is right, so Athens trying to take over an almost defenseless country is not just. The Athenian argument is that they can conquer Melos because Athens is stronger. They also justify themselves by saying that they follow the law of nature. The Athenians say “Our opinion of the gods and our knowledge of men lead us to conclude that it is a general and necessary law of nature to rule whatever one can. This is not a law that we made ourselves, nor were we the first to act upon it when it was made. We found it already in existence, and we shall leave it to exist for ever among those who come after us. We are merely acting in accordance with it, and we know that you or anybody else with the same power as ours would be acting in precisely the same way”(105,405). Athens is saying that they follow the law of nature, which is to rule whatever one can. The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to ignore justice. The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to have a false idea of justice. The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to want to use Melos as an example to other nations. The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to have a desire to control Melos.

The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to have a false idea of justice. The Athenian’s idea of justice is different than the Melian’s idea of justice. The Athenians say “the standard of justice depends on the equality of power to compel and that in fact the strong do what they have the power to do and the weak accept what they have to accept”(8,40). This is a false idea of justice. It does not promote equality or doing what is right. Their idea of justice says that the strong rule over the weak. This does not go along with the true idea of justice, which is to do what is right. The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature is what causes them to have this false idea of justice. The law of nature says to the Athenians that they should rule whatever they can. For the Athenians to follow this it would mean that they would try to take over all other countries around them, no matter how strong they are. From this the Athenians get their idea of justice. This does not go along with the true idea of justice which is to do what is right. So the Athenians desire to follow the law of nature causes them to have a false idea of justice. The Athenian’s idea of justice is an ignorance of true justice. This is because the Athenian’s idea of justice is that the strong rule over the weak, and the true idea of justice is to do what is right. The strong ruling over the weak is not doing what is right.

The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to want to use Melos as an example to other nations. The Athenians say that they need to conquer Melos to show other nations that they are strong. The Athenians say to the Melians “If we were on friendly terms with you, our subjects would regard that as a sign of weakness in us, whereas your hatred is evidence of our power”(5,40). The Athenians are saying that by conquering Melos, they are setting an example of their power to other countries. The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to want to do this. The law of nature says that they should rule whatever they can. This causes them to try to take over other countries, which leads them to want to look powerful to other countries. In order to look powerful, the Athenians have to take over other nations, to set an example for other countries. The Athenians think that if they don’t try to conquer Melos then the other islands will think that Athens is weak, so they will revolt against Athens. In order to fulfill the law of nature, Athens has to take over Melos. This is not doing what is just. Conquering Melos to show their power to other nations is not doing what is right.

The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to have a desire to control Melos. In addition to wanting to take over Melos, Athens wants to control Melos and profit from them. Athens says that they can profit from Melos, after they take over Melos. The Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes this. The law of nature says that they should rule whatever they can. The Athenians get from this that they should take over Melos and control them. This does not follow what is just. Trying to control and profit from an almost defenseless country is not doing what is right. The Athenians are just controlling Melos for their own good, not for the good of Melos. So, the Athenian’s desire to control Melos is an ignorance of justice.

Order custom research paper on Melian Debate

Both the Athenians and the Melians have ideas of what is just. The Athenian’s idea of justice is that the strong should rule over the weak. The Melian idea of justice is to do what is right. The Melians have the true idea of justice. The Athenians ignore true justice because they follow the law of nature. So, the Athenian’s desire to follow the law of nature causes them to ignore justice.

I am writing to you today because I suspect a widow women with the name of Jessica Cross to be practicing witchcraft. I am a European man, by the name of Samuel Finn. For the past few weeks there have been some strange occurrences in the wildlife, in the crops and in the animals. Jessica Cross recently inherited her husbands land, and wealth. This is the land that I tried to purchase from him just seven months ago. I am familiar with the practices of witchcraft. I am writing to give you some information on How to Spot a Witch. I will tell you what to look for when searching for a witch and give you a brief outline of what to do.

When looking for witchcraft in anyone, you look for strange behaviors. Or you might want to look for marks on the victims body. The devil will leave marks on the victims, like being branded. This is the first thing you want to look for when trying to spot a witch. These spots can vary in size. They almost look like a mosquito or fleabite. When you locate the spot you must poke the spot with a needle or something sharp. If it does not hurt the victim or make them bleed, they can be considered to be a witch. Another way is if the victim has a third nipple. The witch uses the third teat to suckle demons so they can stay on earth longer and stay healthier.

There are three more ways to find out if they are witches. There is the swimming test. You pour holy water all over your suspect and then tie them up so they cannot swim, or make it so they can barely move. Don’t put too much extra weight on the victim or they will sink. Next you tie a rope around their waist and toss them into the river. If they float they are considered to be a witch.

If you ask the right questions at the right time you can get information out of them. You need to know when it is the right time to ask the questions. If you catch them off guard they will reveal to you that they are a witch. They are clever but you can catch them off guard.

The last way is nabbing the Elusive Imp. You have to catch them with their familiars. Imps are in animal form and they are believed to last only 4 hours without suckled by their master or mistress. When you have the witch in prison make a peephole where you can keep a close eye on what the witch is doing. If you see any type of animal in the cell it is probably an Imp.

I hope this will encourage you to go out and hunt witches. I hope this will help you along your travels. Thank you for supporting the fight against witchcraft.
